Make the right choice Choose Healthy Drinks for Your Child

Is your child consuming too much sugar? It is reported that many of our children consume 16 percent of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calories from added sugar that comes from sweetened drinks and snacks such as cookies and chocolates.

Did you know? Sugar can reduce a child’s immunity as the body’s microbiome balance of good bacteria is distrupted. The trillions of good bacteria that help the body break down food, produce vitamins and protect it from illnesses is reduced when children consume excessive sugar. Reducing your child’s sugar intake may help reduce symptoms of runny nose, excessive mucus, cough and sinus conditions as cold-like symptoms are one of the most common effects of sugar.

Help your child reduce sugar intake Regardless of whether your child displays health condition symptoms, the ‘World Health Organization proposed new draft guidelines recommending that only five percent of the total daily calories in our diets should come from sugar’.

Pregnancy Acne

Baby Acne

What is it?

What is it?

This breakout usually tends to hit around the sixth week of pregnancy due to hormone surges. Thanks to progesterone, your glands increase acne-causing secretion of sebum that is responsible for clogging up pores and bacteria build-up, hence the breakouts.

Once baby arrives, you will soon learn that that baby can have acne too. Similar to adolescent acne, baby acne appears as pimples or red bumps often on the cheeks of the back. This is common, but it is temporary, so don’t panic!

How do I prevent it?

How do I prevent it?

Maintain a good level of hygiene – always cleanse thoroughly with a mild and gentle cleanser – be sure to pay extra attention to areas around hairline and jaw. Keep your bed linens, pillow case and towels clean as well.

Hormones and genetics are the likely causes of baby acne, so baby acne is unavoidable for some babies. What you can do is ensure the acne does not worsen by using soft fabrics, or cleaning up the face thoroughly without leaving saliva lingering on the face for too long.

4 april 2016

You should not over-wash as it strips skin of its natural moisture leading to sebum over-production. Never pick at pimples as it will cause inflammation and/or scarring. Moisturise to soothe the skin and reduce irritation. Expectant mums are advised to seek medical consultation before the use and purchase of any topical treatment.

did you know? Pregnancy causes increased levels of estrogen which leads to:

Slight change in colour of moles • Scars to be more noticeable • Increase in skin tags (small benign ‘extra’ flesh growth around the neck that look a bit like warts) • Certain existing skin conditions to be aggravated

Do not attempt to remove skin tags yourself and it is best to consult a medical professional to prevent infection and profuse bleeding.

How do I treat it?

?

How do I treat it?

Do not scrub or pick at it, and simply cleanse with water two to three times a day. You should definitely not use adult products on your baby, and do not apply lotion or wash with soap. The acne will eventually go away.

Dry Sensitive Skin

Oilatum Soap Bar ($10.35, mypharmacy) is a mild cleanser for dry, sensitive skin. Its unique gentle formulation helps to reduce dryness and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. Suitable for all skins types, it is recommended by dermatologists around the world, even for use on children and infants.

PREP KITCHEN SPACE FOR BÉBÉ

FivE ways to detox your kitchen before baby arrives

H

ave you spent too much time preparing for the nursery? The last few months prior to baby’s arrival would see most parents scrambling to purchase many things, and one of the most “forgotten” things to do is to clean up the kitchen. This space, though important, is somewhat neglected. Here are a few tips for you to ensure that your kitchen is ready and functional to help you sail through your parenting journey smoothly.

Make SPACE FOR Baby

Set aside space for baby and this entails having enough room for steriliser, bottles and formula milk storage. Ensure that this area is not in direct sunlight as the difference in temperature from day to night can change the milk powder quality resulting in discolouration and clumping. Clear Clutter

There will be some utensils that you will not be using. For

example, the beautiful wine glasses or festive tableware will most likely take a backseat for the first 12 months of your baby’s infancy stage since you would be too busy parenting and you would rather spend time catching up on sleep than hosting a dinner party. Use creativity

Utilise every bit of your kitchen space. You can stow away baking trays and kits in the oven as most parents will find themselves steaming food and making soups more often. Spend some time to look for space-saving storage that can make your kitchen neater. Clean refrigerator

One of the best times to clean your fridge is definitely before baby arrives. Clear your fridge of expired products and sanitise it. This will help to ensure that your fridge is kept spick and span. If needed, have a fridge maintenance done as well.

GET THE Convenient Smart Slider 5 april 2016

Pigeon Slide Steam Steriliser ($189, leading baby specialty stores) is the world's first slide open steriliser that was designed with mums. The unique features offers all the convenience that mums ask for – no more mess with flimsy lids, large capacity for sterilising more items at one go and easy maintenance in a single device. The best part is, you don’t need to remove the top tiers before reaching for items in the lowest tier.

baby / play Pretend play has been shown to aid in the development of children in these domains

Social and emotional Taking on different roles in play and playing with others allow children to learn how to relate to others and to be considerate to them, developing empathy and a sense of responsibility.

Cognitive Pretend play allows children to flex their imagination and problem-solve to find creative solutions. For example, children can look for materials to create a pretend pirate ship.

Taking Play Seriously P Let your child play and learn

20 april 2016

Language Children tend to talk to themselves when they play and try out speech or new words that they’ve heard others use.

lay should be all fun and laughter, but research has also shown that play can promote the development of a healthy child, even without us parents being aware of it. While allowing your child to flex his imagination and freely explore and learn with objects found around the home and in nature, why not also ensure that the toys he plays with are effective in taking care of his development too? Toy companies are more conscious about incorporating developmentally appropriate elements in toys and play objects that facilitate change, growth and learning in multiple areas. Here are some picks for you and your child that can help facilitate the growth of your child into a healthy individual!

T h e L o v e tt e s The Lovettes is Singapore’s youngest professional girl band consisting of child pageant queens and talents; Tufaylah Norhisyam, Julka Phoenix Lee-Zidov (Kaka) and Nyla Qamelia (above, from left to right) with more than 100 competition wins under their belts. Officially formed in June 2015 by Maia Lee, our Singapore Idol alumnus, The Lovettes is also the world’s first, and youngest visual poi performers other than being able to deliver Beyoncé and Janet’s numbers to their audience.

G

rooming a child is no easy feat, let alone nurturing a child with talent. It is increasingly tough to raise children to reach their potential in today’s academically competitive environment. We speak with parents who have braved many challenges to help their child achieve the best they can in the different arenas, from artistic pursuits to sporting aspirations. We speak with Maia, mother of Kaka to find more about the band and what inspired her to form The Lovettes.

Singapore’s youngest professional girl band

When I Grow Up, i want to be...

Kaka Vet “I love animals and want to help them.”

How did you get to know the girls and their mothers? I own an online children’s custom clothing boutique called Poppykins, and I used to hold online photo pageants and I got to know the girls and their mothers when they took part in the online contest.

What inspired you to work with the girls? At the beginning, due to the fact that Kaka is in a number of child pageants, I got to know many organisers and pageant contestants and their mums. So, many became my friends and whenever there are pageants or photoshoot opportunities, I would recommend Nyla and Tufaylah. I had also invited Nyla to model for some of my apparels. That’s how we became friends, and I would ask their mothers along to compete together.

Did it matter to you whose daughter won?

It didn’t start with the notion of forming a girl band. Over the past three years, I’ve watched them grow and found that they each had their own talent for the stage. All three girls are Little Miss Cinderella winners, and are quite known in the child pageantry and modelling circuit. So, last year I decided to form a group for them and that’s how The Lovettes came about.

How do you help develop and hone their talents? Currently they are undergoing dance and vocal training with me in their free time. I was a performer from Singapore Armed Forces Music and Dance Company and a vocal coach with Attitude Music School. Later, I went on to join Singapore Idol Season 1 and became a singer and a columnist for The New Paper. With my experience, I also teach them dance and assist in the choreography by theatre performer and owner of Despoke Artiste Management, Desmond Charles.

What are your plans for them? Nyla Math Teacher or “Cupcake Boss” “I love to create things especially decorating cupcakes.”

I have plans to further develop them, as I believe character and talent developments are as important as academic pursuits. At least they will have something to fall back on should they decide that they would like to work in the entertainment industry in the future.

How do you think the girls have benefitted? Through performing, these girls have been more confident and have good social skills, something I think many children today lag behind in.

How do you and the other two mothers work together? Tufaylah Air Stewardess or English Teacher “I like to dress up!”

Their mothers, Liz and Nuraini, together with their families have been most supportive as well. Even when I design and sew their costumes, I will consult them and their families before each design is approved.

39 april 2016

It never mattered whose daughter won, because we worked as a team and helped one another out and the girls genuinely enjoyed themselves and each others’ company.

How did the idea of Lovettes come about?

kids / learn

brain training Manage behaviour from its source

W

e have all experienced how downright frustrating it can be when managing certain behaviours in our children. These can come in the forms of general mischief and precociousness, or manifest in behaviours found at the other end of the spectrum – developmental and learning difficulties. Strategies that our own parents have used on us in the past may no longer achieve the same effect on our own children, rendering the lessons we passively inherited from them less useful in the face of modern challenges, and the challenges we face in helping our children manage their learning. So now, enter neuroscience and psychology research. These tell us that behavioural issues can no longer only be intervened by “treating” observable behavioural traits. They suggest we dig deeper, look into the root and the source of issues, and encourage a deeper understanding of our children as individuals with independent cognitions. This also urges parents to commit and invest in the development of their children using simple applications of child development and child psychology theories.

46 april 2016

With the increase in research on cognition and behaviour, and the permeation of these research findings into public awareness via specialised programmes, we see an upward trend of parents turning to these neuroscience research to help cope with their children’s behaviours. We introduce Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) which parents have been known to turn increasingly turn to, to train the brain, manage behaviour, and manage difficulties and issues in their children.

For more tips, check out our website www.singaporeschild.com.sg

What is NLP? NLP is a school of psychological techniques that focuses on one’s subconscious or unconscious mind. The people who started this approach for communication and development claim that there is a connection between neurological processes, language and behaviour that is learnt through experience. In order to achieve specific goals, these can be altered.

How does this apply to my children? The principles behind NLP can be applied to both adults and children. You might come across complicated scientific jargons and processes while you read up about NLP, but fret not! NLP can be applied quite simply to everyday life and situations, so let us give you a brief glimpse into how you can start looking into NLP as a way to supplement your parenting. • Understand your child

Sometimes telling kids not to do something can be counterproductive. Tell your child what you want him to do, not what you don’t want him to. Don’t leave your toys lying around! Toys aren’t meant to be kept on the floor so let’s keep them away. Creating an illusion of choice can also be helpful in getting your children to do what you want them to. Will you hurry up and do your homework? When do you want to do your homework, today when you have more time, or tomorrow when you’re likely to rush? Another useful strategy is talking as if it’s already a given that your child will do what you ask him to. Don’t even think about switching on the television until you’re done with your homework! When you’re done with your homework, we’ll watch some TV. • Do things differently

Have you ever experienced a certain behaviour or tantrum that made you feel like you were repeatedly trying to move or break down a brick wall? An erroneous way to move forward is to keep pushing at the wall but you do it anyway, thinking that if you just pushed a little harder, along the same trajectory you’ve been on, something will give. That “something” might end up being your sanity. ‘Pattern Interrupt’ is an NLP method of doing something different and unexpected to bring about a different result, for example, throwing a tantrum when your child throws one just to surprise him and make him stop.

47 april 2016

We all know communication is a two-way process. One way to also look at this is to understand that the effectiveness of the communication between two people lies in the kind of responses that each elicit from the other. Based on NLP principles, everyone has their own preferred representational system; the senses through which you experience the world. Forcing your visual child to learn things heavily using his auditory senses can only be as effective if both your frustrations with the mismatch in styles are kept low. A more effective method would be for you to guide him through his homework perhaps with visual aids that can allow him to experience his learning better.

are you digitally fluent enough? The importance of computational thinking for children

T

he reality seems obvious – stay digitally engaged and competent, or lag behind. Children are born into a digitally immersive world and are already considered “digital natives” with the exposure they receive. However, there are many parents who remain clueless about the definition of digital competence and fluency and what it entails. Is being digitally engaged all about knowing how to navigate one’s way through cyberspace? Or is there more to it? Are parents themselves digitally fluent enough?

58 april 2016

It is pertinent that parents know what is in store for them in the future, even if only to be better prepared to tackle it. We speak to Mr Jonathan Chan of Jules Ventures Private Limited, which aims to revolutionise pre-school education through the teaching of computational thinking to children through games, about the importance of digital fluency and computational thinking.

1

What are some skills that need to be incorporated into the current curriculum to ensure children are ready for the future? We realise that a change in mindset and education is needed. Especially for the “computing revolution” happening now (or what many call the 4th Industrial Revolution). Almost all the information anyone needs can be accessed at their fingertips in three seconds. Would children then need to learn rote memorisation? Should they be dedicating their time to remembering things, when everything is available digitally? Or should they instead learn how to combine their creativity and intuition with the processing powers of the computer? The JULES solution is Computational Thinking (CT). Many people confuse CT with coding because of the associations with a computer, but CT is an even more fundamental concept people have to think about because

the nature of coding will evolve. Coding languages have a possibility of consolidating, and sometimes learning one language may not develop competencies in another. With CT, people are able to gain core insights about how to think with technology in mind. That distinction allows children who understand CT to also become innovators, problem solvers and creators with a vision for tomorrow, in addition to providing a deep foundation for coding, math and the sciences.

2

Why should a pre-school curriculum incorporate Computational Thinking? Imagine if you were taught key problem solving skills from young. This would lead to increased confidence, and a sense of possibility and wonder about learning. It would inculcate clarity of thought, improving their quality of learning. These advantages and skillsets, if imbued for your children, can lead to lifelong positive habits. The structure of CT is unique in the sense where we can easily teach the principles through games, in a manner which does not really affect gameplay drastically. As a result children will feel like they are playing fun, well-designed games and learn

CT in a very comprehensive way too. Ultimately CT benefits one and all because it promotes clarity of thought, metacognition, and when the principles are used in unison, is a very powerful framework for problem solving.

3

What is digital fluency and why does it matter to both children and their parents? Digital Fluency, simply put, is the ability to “read and write” in technology. Meaning that a digitally fluent individual would not only know how to consume content and use technology as a user, but also be able to manipulate and command technology as a creator or maker. This is important as being digitally fluent would afford exponential advantages in productivity due to the increased digitisation of our world. For example, unbelievable amounts of time can be saved if only one knew how to write a crawler to do automated research, or if there is an automated grocery ordering system for your home kitchen. These digital “superpowers” are available to many if they take the time and energy to invest themselves in building up their digital fluency, which is based off the principles of CT.

4

What are some tips for parents to upgrade their own digital fluency to better guide their children? Parents can pick up technological skills from courses on Computational Thinking and Coding. Taking the first step would lead them to realise that technological skills are not as intimidating as it seems. Once parents are able to understand and experience CT themselves, they would be much better suited to guide their children along their journey as well.

5

Children are spending a lot of time online, how can parents balance this need to be digitally connected, yet culturally and environmentally conscious? Parents should realise that children will always have a device. The first step is to accept that this is the future, and that we should work with the device rather than against it. One way would be to invest energy and time with building a relationship with the child. The natural world can offer many things the screen can’t, but parents need to be willing to put in the effort and energy to guide the child towards that direction and also understand their child well enough to introduce these things in a manner that is not intrusive but interesting for the child.

very day, 15 people die from cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke) in Singapore. Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 29.9 percent of all deaths in 2014*; nearly one out of three deaths in Singapore is due to heart disease or stroke. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, different from a cardiac arrest where there is a sudden heart malfunction which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. In addition to age, gender and family history, the other modifiable factors that increase one’s risk for cardiovascular diseases are diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Thus, making lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of heart diseases is extremely important. Also, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), knowing your heart rate can offer you helpful information about your health as changes to your heart rate can indicate a medical problem. With today’s technology, we are never short of gadgets to help in improving our quality of life including the state of our health – from measuring heart rate to assessing fitness levels to setting fitness goals. COURTESY IS

FOR YOU AND ME Learn about how you can make it a better place for everyone.

Kindness is in everyone. The Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) wants to encourage everyone to start, show and share kindness. It aspires to inspire graciousness one kind act at a time. By sparing a thought for the people around us, we can all help to create a gracious society, and make life better for you and me.

Hi, I am Singa. Welcome to Kindsville!

Did You Know? The two strokes and ovals of the Singapore Kindness Movement logo depict two people – one who does an act of kindness and the other who receives it. The freehand strokes combine to form a heart. In it, red symbolises love for our fellow man and green represents caring for the environment, tolerance, creativity and consideration. Since March 2001, the National Courtesy Campaign, which was originally launched in 1979, was incorporated into the Singapore Kindness Movement. Indeed, courtesy is the simplest form of kindness, and both courtesy and kindness are underpinned by sincerity – kindness comes from the heart, and courtesy forms the action, the outward expression of kindness.

8

MEET SINGA THE LION Singa the Lion, the familiar icon for courtesy that most Singaporeans, like your parents grew up with, is placed together with the kindness heart, bringing courtesy and kindness together to foster a more gracious society. He holds up a yellow gerbera daisy, which is a symbol of appreciation that goes hand-in-hand with the notion of kindness and with the Singapore Kindness Movement.

Kindsville is where Singa and the Kindness Cubbies live. Singa and the Kindness Cubbies would like you to join the Kindness family in spreading kindness!

Three tips for you to develop kindness Tip 1: Do Your Best

Tip 2: Use the magic words

Tip 3: Be a contributor

Make a conscious effort to practise kindness. Be kind to people around you and give them help whenever they need and within your ability. For example, give up your seat to an elderly or someone who needs it more than you.

Don’t forget to use the “magic words” at the appropriate times - ‘Thank you’, ‘You’re welcome’, ‘Please’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Excuse me’. Always remember to show gratitude and appreciation to people who have helped you in one way or another.

Join your parents and your other family members at your neighbourhood or community service events to volunteer your time. You can also share your books, toys and clothes with others in need. Not everyone is as lucky as you are!

Get mummy or daddy to check out Kindsville Times from SKM Kindsville Times is a free newsletter, with Kindsville Times Junior available for pre-schoolers.
