Ot h e r s u b stitu t e s: “Think of games with extended play, and bring out different toys at regular intervals,” advised Dr Vivian Hill, educational psychologist from the Institute of Education. Finger puppets and activity cards are toys that can be drawn out to last a lot longer.

If your child likes drawing, this is less messy than paper and markers. It is also easier to carry around. Ot h e r s u b stitu t e s: Dr Vivian recommended having games that you don’t need to carry. Verbal games like ‘I Spy’ and ‘20 Questions’ are good ways to pass the time too.
Sealable plastic bags in different sizes They hold soiled or wet clothing, half-eaten fruit or snacks, a leaky water bottle, and anything you need to pack away neatly.

Gummy sweets This is to relieve air pressure discomfort on flights. Oth e r s u b stitute s: Dr Vivian suggested having drinks on hand so your kids may take a sip for take-off and landing. “This is so that they don’t concentrate on the air pressure, which can affect children more than adults.”

2 Perfect Days
in Siem Reap
While it is possibly the best known Cambodian city, Siem Reap still manages to surprise and delight visitors. By Raja Jumira
Y
ou can’t visit Siem Reap and not see Angkor Wat. Nor should you neglect the other parts of the town, which do so much to add to the charm and allure of this historical area. After recovering from years of instability following the rule of the Khmer Rouge, Siem Reap has become the epicentre of the new Cambodia, boasting the country’s best restaurants, world-class spas, and probably more hotels and hostels than temples. But at heart, it’s still a lovely town with a gently flowing river, pretty French shophouses, beautiful tree-lined promenades, and of course, an ancient temple that’s a

UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re planning on travelling to Siem Reap for the weekend, and you’re not quite sure what to do there and where to go, here’s a basic beginner’s guide. Temple Run The temples are what everyone’s here for, and Angkor doesn’t disappoint (Angkor Pass: US$20 for one day, US$40 for three days) – and in particular, the stupendous Angkor Wat. Rise in the darkness to start your stay with a bang by savouring an awe-inspiring sunrise over the world’s largest religious structure. Take a tuk-tuk or hire a bike. It’s the most popular thing to do here, so expect to be joined by hundreds or thousands of others.
Siem Reap has more than just Angkor Wat when it comes to temples. Visit the main temple circuit – Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm – at your own pace. If you fancy yourself as a Cambodian Indiana Jones, visit Beng Mealea, where you can see what the temples would look like if left to nature. Spend the day discovering some of the lesser-visited ruins and any smaller temple that catches your eye. The temples close to Siem Reap can be explored without a guide. Market Day The quickest way to discover Cambodian life is to visit the Old Market at Phsar Chas. It’s not for the squeamish as vendors openly gut fish, and butcher and display different

meat and organs. For the adventurous palate, there are crispy fried tarantulas, stewed ants, snails sautéed with black olives and deep-fried crickets. But if you fancy something tamer, sample the grilled beef rice paper rolls or fried banana kebabs. Gone Amok Addicted to Khmer food? Take a class in traditional cooking and you’ll satisfy your cravings long after you leave Cambodia. The talented chef instructors at Cooks ‘N Tuk Tuks will take you shopping for fresh produce at the local market before revealing the secrets of making fish amok – a coconut milk-based Cambodian national dish – and other favourites. Water World Built on seven-metre-high stilts on the Tonle Sap, the floating village of
Kampong Phluk survives almost exclusively on fishing and related activities. However, the flooded forest nearby is the main attraction. Every year, it is inundated when the lake rises to take the Mekong’s overflow. As the lake drops, the petrified trees are revealed. Exploring this area by wooden dugout in the wet season (Aug-Nov) is very atmospheric, with scenes that look straight out of a movie. Get there from the other floating village of Chong Kneas, where a boat can be arranged for the hour-long journey. People Watch Pub Street is Siem Reap’s party hub, so grab a drink (or a scoop of Siem Reap’s best ice cream at Blue Pumpkin) and soak it all up. Continue down the road to find a spot for dinner. All the restaurants offer reasonably priced Western and local food. End your evening, sipping a rose and lemongrass martini at the highly-recommended Miss Wong – a classy cocktail bar, located along a small side street, which will transport you back to 1930s Shanghai and serve as a good refuge from the madness one street over.

hen people first found fossils, they imagined they must be the bones of monsters or dragons. Then, water explorers and traders went to foreign climates, and saw some of the biggest and most fearsome-looking reptiles, they came back with even taller tales of gigantic beasts.

Although these creatures were bigger in the imagination than in reality, these modern-day monsters are still impressive creatures.
Proud Parents A crocodile might be the last thing you want to see when you're going for a swim. But, as far as their babies are concerned, they're great parents. Crocodiles are one of the few members of the reptile family who take care of their young. They build or dig nests for their eggs. When they hatch, the crocodile is there to take care of its new brood. Indeed, some species even carry their babies from the nest to the water edge in their mouth – and aren't tempted to eat a single one!
sneaky snapper There are over 20 species of crocodilian, including crocodiles, alligators and caimans. The biggest are saltwater crocodiles, which can grow to over six metres long and weigh more than a car. Crocodilians are very good at hiding in the water – even the big ones – and ambush their prey, sneaking up on them as they drink before lunging out of the water to grab them. In fact, some species of crocodiles can even jump straight up out of the water.
