Jungle Jive Party Turn a birthday party into a jungle adventure using these ideas for decorations, food, party favors and masks inspired by The Animal Boogie!

ns Tr o p i c a l D e c o r a t i o To turn any room into a tropical jungle, start by cutting large leaves from green paper and create large flowers from construction paper in pink, purple and red. Tape the leaves and flowers to the walls and windows. You can also cut out additional leaves and glue the ends together to make a leafy streamer. Hang one strand or many from the corners.

Use more construction paper or poster board in bright colors to create large butterfly shapes. You can start with a shape like a heart and fold it in the center to make butterfly wings. Either stick these to the walls like the leaves, or use fishing wire to hang them from ceiling hooks to make it look like butterflies are flying around the room! For jungle animal party masks, see the template in the other PDF on the Barefoot Books site!

g l e Fo o d & D r i n k n u J Buy sugar cookie dough or make your own. Cut the dough into animal shapes and bake. Make brightly colored icing using food coloring in red, green and blue. Provide sprinkles and gummy candies for the kids to decorate their own animal cookies with fun and delicious toppings! For a healthier snack, cover plates in lettuce and top with a variety of bright and crunchy vegetables — use carrots, cucumbers, celery sticks and baby tomatoes. Serve with a variety of dips and dressings. Make a juicy jungle treat with a fruit plate of berries, melons, grapes and cherries. Serve with honey or whipped cream as delicious dippers! For fun fruity drinks, add fresh fruit like apples, berries or watermelon to several kinds of juice. Smoothies made from fruit, yogurt, ice or ice cream will also be a big hit!

There are many great options for jungle-themed party favors, like animal patterned pencils, erasers, pens, stickers and small note pads. Rubber animals, snakes and creepy crawlies make great party favors too! As a tasty addition, add gummy worms and other jelly candies in bright colors.

To break the ice, start with a dance off! Play the music from The Animal Boogie. You can create several fun games from just this one song. You can play musical chairs by stopping the song at random intervals. Or you can ask the children to act out the movements of their favorite animal. After everyone is in the dancing spirit, put on some of the children’s favorite music. It’s time to boogie, woogie, oogie!

“It’s a BIRD! He goes flap, flap, boogie, woogie, oogie! Flap, flap, boogie, woogie, oogie! Flap, flap, boogie, woogie, oogie! That’s the way he’s flying in the sky!” — from The Animal Boogie

Boogie, woogie, oogie with the animals of the jungle! Using the fun and catchy music from The Animal Boogie, children will learn to associate music and movement as they dance and sing along!

Benefits Connect words, music and movement. Learn that dance is a fun form of exercise! PB w/ CD 9781905236220 • $9.99 PB 9781905236602 • $6.99 HC w/ CD 9781846862311 • $16.99 Activity Book 9781846862854 • $5.99

s Boogie! ’ t e L Read the book aloud to introduce children to the story. Next, play the CD. After, point out how different the book becomes when you add music. Ask the children what they felt. “Does it make you want to move your feet?” or “Do you want to shake and shimmy?” Be silly and they’ll be silly too! Play the song again, this time encouraging kids to hum or sing along! Now that everyone is familiar with the song, play the song again and ask the children to add movements for the animals on each page. Then ask them to make up movements for “boogie, woogie, oogie.” Don’t give too much instruction so that kids can be creative and come up with their own moves!

Materials The Animal Boogie with CD CD player At least one adult to lead the group Children (as many as you can handle) Imagination!

Play and sing the other verses from the book and have the children act out the way the different characters move. You may want to assign the animals or point to different kids as you go. Finally, play the song again, adding all the elements together, encouraging the children to sing, dance and act out the movements for their favorite animals. If you are feeling really ambitious, gather parents and friends to watch a performance of The Animal Boogie that you just completed.
