STARTING AGAIN There is something magical in the beginning of the year, in January. This month always comes loaded with new projects, purposes, hopes ... we all hope to collect a lot of good experiences. The list of ideas for 2014 in Singulares Magazine is endless. You won’t have to wait a lot to see them and enjoy them. 2014 certainly comes loaded with many (and good) projects that you are going to be able to go discover every day, month after month, issue by issue, throughout this year. But ... what is for decoratively? Singulares Magazine will continue going for originality, creativity and good design. Because we love mixture, simplicity and colour and we are going to keep doing what we like and enjoying it.

We love showing our houses as they are, with no makeup or hairstyle. This is where the true essence of those who live there spread making it unique and exceptional. We are fortunate to enjoy the freedom that is makes us truly Singulares, we cannot imagine any of our reports otherwise.

to an end with a delicious dessert from Más allá de 365 Sonrisas. Houses, locals, recipes, DIY projects ... whatever it is, each page tells a story that you are going to be able to discover step by step. Definitely an exciting year awaits us.

This issue leads us to wander around really trendy bars and restaurants, as Cazador in Madrid; full of sophisticated elegance as Q de Barella, in Valencia, or wonderful hotels that invite us to relax, as the one that we visited in Caceres. We also opened the doors of two magnificent homes, one in Madrid and another in Barcelona, and the new study Bea from Con Botas de Agua and Lucia M Photography to delight ourselves, and finally, come

RADIATOR 1863 It was in the mid-nineteenth century when radiators first appeared. Its aim was to replace the old coal stoves. In 1863 Joseph Nason and Robert Briggs designed a model using vertical wrought iron tubes, which were bolted to a cast iron base. A few years later, in 1870 Nelson H. Bundy invented the "Bundy Loop", a radiator with curved tubes, which being in the same space offered greater heating surface. Its use quickly became popular and it is considered the predecessor of radiators such as we know them today.

PRODUCTION: SINCE.

PHOTOGRAPHY: MERCEDES PÉREZ.

28 | SINGULARESMAG #9

The design of these new radiators allowed manufacturers to offer a more flexible product, as simply attaching vertical sections it was possible to get different sized radiators. The Victorian style rapidly applied to these devices, FROM... 1863

giving them a more careful and ornate appearance, becoming authentic decorative objects in homes.

SINGULARESMAG #9 | 29

Until the mid-twentieth century the central heating was a luxury item and therefore the radiators. From the 70 its use became widespread and often radiators attempted to be camouflaged as they were only considered as functional elements. Today the trend 30 | SINGULARESMAG #9

has changed and radiators are back in fashion through the restoration of old appliances but also having the option of getting reissues of older models.

FRIXUELOS WITH HOT CHOCOLATE Marta Fuertes is an Asturian that has been living in Brussels for three years. She collaborates regularly in Singulares offering her gluten-free recipes from the blog "Mรก allรก de 365 sonrisas" and this time she brings us a recipe typical from western Asturias, where she comes from.

The frixuelos (a type of Asturian crêpe) are taken alongside with a hot chocolate in winter days. The dough is the easiest part, the “hardest” part is how to fry them but anyone can do it, as for chocolate. In the rest of Asturias they call frixuelos to the same dough but with the shape of a pancake, while in the West there are usually done with this rather unique way.

36 | SINGULARESMAG #9

FRIXUELOS (4 SERVES) · 3 eggs · 500ml of whole milk · 325g of flour (you can use wheat flour or, for gluten-free floue, use a Mix for dough) · 1 teaspoon of baking soda · 1 teaspoon of salt · Oil to fry · Sugar to sprinkle (optional)

In a large bowl whip the eggs. Then incorporate the milk with a pitcher by slowly dropping a thin stream and whipping. Add the salt and finally the sifted flour and the baking soda. Mix vigorously until smooth. In case you had lumps you can use an electric mixer for a completely smooth the dough. Let the dough rest for half an hour at room temperature. Once past that time, heat a pan with oil for frying, pour the dough on a pitcher with spout and wait until the oil is very hot. Start pouring the dough slowly forming concentric circles that start from the middle of the pan. Let the dough cook that way around about half a minute and turned it carefully with a slotted spoon. Cook the frixuelo on the other side and take it out straining the oil well. Do the same with the remaining dough until you have a "mountain" of frixuelos, and serve them preferably hot and freshly made.

HOT CHOCOLATE (4 SERVES) · 1l of whole milk

· 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom

· 100ml of cream

· 50g de cornflour

· 100g of icing sugar

· 500g of dark chocolate insmall pieces

· The rind of an orange · 1 vanilla pod

or dark choclate pearls

In a large casserole pot heat the milk with the cream, the sugar, the orange rind, the shelled vanilla bean and the cardamom over low heat. Let it infuse well without boiling. Remove the orange rind, add the cornflour diluted in water and stir. When it come to a boil, add the chocolate and let it melt completely. Mix well. Let simmer low heat during10 minutes, stirring to prevent sticking to the bottom of the casserole. Let it rest a bit and serve it hot with the frixuelos.

As she tell us, her love for nature arose when she was just a little girl, as she use to spent long hours in the garden with her grandfather, who use to cultivate the best dahlias of her town in Uruguay.

50 | SINGULARESMAG #9

Similarly, during the weekends in their visits to the countryside, her mother taught her not only the name of the flowers and to take care of them, but also to observe the leaves, stems and their different textures.

THE MESSY TREE STUDIO

Located in Madrid’s downtown, the studio of Bea and Lucía, two lively and working moms, is a place tailored to their tastes, with a decoration selected following their emotions, such as the ones that led them to choose the less perfect olive tree in the nursery, and that now it is their symbol.

Severals details complement the studio: old cameras, stems, flowers, ceramics, zinc houses ... and huge printed photos of the sessions that Lucia does occasionally to their daughters.

60 | SINGULARESMAG #9

Lucia, photographer by profession, and Bea, passionate and totally dedicated to the world of communication and soul of El Gato con Botas de Agua, met one day in Grey Elephant during a washi tape’s workshop that Bea taught to parents and children. They get on from the start and from this moment on they didn’t stop getting on in other courses and meetings. Soon, Bea asked Lucia to carry out a photo shoot of her second pregnancy. She was so pleased with the result that a few days after the birth of the little girl they worked together again in a photo shoot of the baby, Lola. And they kept meeting to have breakfast or take

a coffee and discuss the dreams they I had... "We used to meet for breakfast occasionally and fantasized about the idea of having, one day, an office together," Bea tells me. Until, in one of these breakfasts, Lucía told Bea that she had found a space in which to become independent and start her own studio. Bea had been looking for a while for a little space to share and so stop working from home. At that moment, the wish they were dreaming of for a few months came true and they decided to work together (but not scrambled), each in her work but under the same roof.

SINGULARESMAG #9 | 61

62 | SINGULARESMAG #9

They have completed the studio with gifts from family and friends, as happened with the last time Lucía's parents visited her, when the gave her the deer Oh my deer of Guille García-Hoz she already had payed attention to.

SINGULARESMAG #9 | 65

The development has taken some months. The refurbish was commissioned to the wonderful study Madrid in Love with the premise of creating a space to work so comfortable as a house. According to what 66 | SINGULARESMAG #9

Lucia explains, "I wanted to make it appear more like a living room than an office." The joint together between Lucia + Bea + Madrid in Love was promising and, in fact, the result is a cosy studio, dressed with

the finest materials, with the warmth of wood and a taste of workshop brought by the walls and the concrete floors.

COMMUNITY 2.0

Over the centre table and facing the desk, they placed decorative carbon filament bulbs; a floor lamp and even the candle’s light complete the lighting of the study.

SINGULARESMAG #9 | 67

It is a unique place, tailored to its owners, in which they have taken care of every detail. They are usually seated working on the computer, but sometimes they have meetings with customers or suppliers or they organize photo shoots. Sometimes they make ginger houses with their girls

and their friends... so they needed a flexible and functional space. Therefore, almost all the furniture was made to measure and also modular, so they can use it in all its different functions, depending on the occasion. The rest of the furniture has been acquired in some incursions

The natural olive was also a gift from the parents of Lucía, though she was responsible for choosing it, after discovering it alone in the nursery, apart from the rest of beautiful olive trees. And that was exactly what captivated her, that it wasn't perfect... And, as Bea says, the disheveled olive (that's how they call it) has become the symbol of the studio.

that Bea and Lucía have done in the Madrid’s Rastro. The lovely table presiding the space is from Caravan, a recovered furniture shop that can also be found in the vicinity of the Rastro.

An apartment with an eclectic style, a colourful and modern spirit, respecting some classic elements of the original house, as the pillars of wood, and which is ideal for its floors, also of wood, for its subtle combination between the past and the present, for its vintage touches, and for the simple shapes that put a detail in every corner.

"Q de Barella is the project where I have better lunch / ate / dinner, thanks to the fact that Quique developed the menu while we were working on the whole creative process." These are the words of Josemi, the interior designer responsible for the adaptation of this local, that previously also housed a restaurant. Fortunately for him, in this sense, the kitchen suffered no change in its location, which made it possible that, every few

minutes, Quique kept intact the energy of his team and they were able to give taste tablespoons of their new dishes. And, certainly, the energy was mandatory to adapt the space in a very short period of time, to achieve adapting it to the type of kitchen that Quique wanted to implement and the type of service he wanted to offer its customers.

The complicity between the couple Quique and Elsa, and Josemi was key to deal with the limited time to launch the restaurant and the unexpected events, which led them to propose many ideas and very fast. They keep very good memories of he whole process; they agree poin126 | SINGULARESMAG #9

ting out that the personal and the professional relationship that join them helped to relax tensions. And the implication of the couple, from the concept around which revolves the restaurant to the choice of materials and finishes, were determining. Elsa suggested including in the pro-

room. The old wine cellar is now the service area, between the two dining rooms, a functional space that houses the bar, the cloakroom, the storage area and the reservations desk. The main dining room, meanwhile, consists of tables of different sizes, depending on the number

of diners as they seek for the most possible flexibility. It is a warm space, in which ash grey has been used for the walls to get a sense of depth and contrast to off-white, also used in the interior. Located on the street Pozas, in the heart of Malasaña, Cazador is one of those bars that catch you by surprise but that make you fall in love instantly. The owners, Enrique and Osama didn’t want it to be one more bar and they have certainly made it by giving to the local an impossible name to forget and a 70’s retro aesthetic that totally wins our heart.

Its decor is somewhere between contemporary art and the kitsch pieces you might find in your grandmother's house. Its large windows open to the outside as if there 140 | SINGULARESMAG #9

was a terrace with a view. The tapestries with hunting scenes, animal horns and other furniture rescued from antiques shops and garage sales are mixed with metallic finis-

hes and spectacular designer lamps, almost all of them on sale, as the one we can see on the bar designed by Angel Tausia. An eclectic environment where the ode to rural does SINGULARES PREMISES

not impede that detail refers us to a more industrial and cosmopolitan decor.

Cazador is a very cozy place where to take the vermouth, a coffee after dinner, a beer in the afternoon or a drink if small draft beers are lengthen to go well into the night. Among its morsels, toast and bagels are noteworthy, as well as the impressive menĂş of handemade cakes, exotic coffees, organic teas, cocktails, cupcakes or homemade jams, with which you can accompany your assorted pastries and enjoy the brunch on weekends. Another thing that distinguishes Cazador from any other bar is having the walls covered with the works of different emerging artists and features an open living room, its owners call "private hunting" dedicated to all kinds of activities, from art and photography exhibitions to books and records presentations, flea markets, thematic workshops and poetry readings.

We have visited Aliseda, a beautiful Extremaduran frontier town 28 kilometres away from Cรกceres, nestled in the Sierra de San Pedro, a paradise for lovers of nature. And we have come here to visit La Tierra Roja, a

charming little hotel (and I say it in a positive way, no undervaluing it, because it only has 6 rooms) providing a high-class hotel service; not for nothing it is rated as one of the best hotels of all Extremadura.

La Tierra Roja occupies a building of traditional architecture (actually, a manor house), from the late nineteenth century. María, the owner, has addressed the design of the rehabilitation, which have complied with all the identity elements of the house, like the red slate floors, the hydraulic tile and the hand made clay floors, the vaulted ceilings, etc. María is also responsible for the decoration of the six rooms of the hotel, as well as of the common areas (living room, dining room, garden, etc.). The decoration has been guided by a fundamental premise, the respect for nature, since most of the pieces (furniture, decorative items, tableware, etc.) are second hand. María, an art and decoration passionate (and a great expert in both facets), has been acquiring, as she herself explains, much of these elements "with passion and affection" at flea markets and thrift stores of Portugal, although there are pieces of almost every city she has visited.

La Tierra Roja is a real enjoyment for all those who love the decor, as MarĂa loves sharing her hobby with guests, explaining the stories hidden behind each of the pieces, tell them

where she managed to discover the pieces and, best of all, she sells the items to anyone wishing to acquire them. A real treat!
