Safe and Vibrant Community/Healthy and Sustainable

This project seeks to transform the urban landscape by integrating the adjacent slum into the city, focusing on inclusion and empowerment. By addressing essential needs like clean water, sanitation, and electricity, and creating spaces for education and healthcare, we aim to enhance quality of life and promote economic growth.

The design will seamlessly blend with the cityscape, incorporating sustainable materials and green spaces to create a livable, environmentally responsible area. Central to this process is community engagement, preserving social ties and fostering ownership. Ultimately, the project aspires to build a more beautiful, just, and equitable city.

Master Plan Design Concept

Each neighborhood is integrated into a larger social district, with each individual neighborhood featuring a communal area that serves the residential units. The entire site is interconnected through shared public spaces, including a community center, childcare and educational facilities, parks and playgrounds, and a business hub, all of which serve the needs of every neighborhood.

The main road connects to the surrounding local streets, with three roads intersecting to form a triangle. In the center of this triangle is a park and playground, creating a focal point for the community. The site is divided into five residential areas, each surrounding a public space. The public space includes a community center, a business hub, and childcare and educational facilities. The childcare and educational facilities are strategically located away from the main roads to ensure children’s safety and provide a sense of security. These facilities are also connected to the park and playground, allowing easy access for children who enjoy playing.

Each neighborhood community features a public green space that not only serves the local residents but also provides amenities for people from surrounding areas. These communal green spaces include lakes, which support the community’s water needs while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area. The presence of these lakes brings residents closer to nature, offering a sense of tranquility and connection to the natural environment.

A public loop connects each neighborhood, creating stronger ties across the entire community and fostering a more vibrant and lively environment. This interconnected loop enhances accessibility and encourages interaction among residents, contributing to a sense of unity and shared community life.

Concept of Social Housing De-

Building Orientation

To reduce the impact of environmental heat on the building, it is open on both the east and west sides, with its orientation positioned from south to north. Due to the higher elevation in the northern area, buildings in this location receive more natural light. Additionally, the northern buildings are rendered with white concrete to reflect sunlight onto the buildings on the southern side. This approach not only enhances natural lighting but also optimizes energy efficiency.

Concept Design Inspiration

The concept design draws inspiration from traditional Khmer houses, which are typically elevated above the ground. This elevation allows for enhanced cross-ventilation at the ground level. Along the northern main street, the space beneath the elevated houses transforms into a social market. On the southern side, a circular ramp integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment, creating an area where the community can host various social activities.

At the center of the development, a communal green space serves as a public area for social housing. This area also features a lake that supports the community’s water needs. Additionally, the residences include terraces that

Building Shading Device

The southern side of the building is more affected by environmental heat. To address this issue, movable horizontal shading panels are installed on the terraces and windows facing the south. These shading devices can be adjusted to control sunlight exposure, reducing heat gain. The sliding doors on the terraces are designed for smooth operation, allowing for easy adjustment of the shading panels as needed. This design enhances comfort while optimizing energy efficiency.

International Student Research and Exchange Center

Tianjin University,China

International Student Research and Exchange Center

For over fifty years, Tianjin University has been actively engaged in educating international students, having trained countless students from all over the world. As a result, the university has established a comprehensive system for cultivating international students, making it easier to meet their specific needs. The student body is composed of individuals from various nationalities and is supported by a range of professional organizations. While respecting the cultures of all nations, Tianjin University also seeks to promote the essence of traditional Chinese culture. In this spirit, the university plans to renovate the site of the former Hydraulic Engineering Hall into an International Student Research and Exchange Center. This new facility will complement the Liuyuan student center located on the west side of Friendship Lake, enhancing Tianjin University’s reputation and transforming the Hydraulic Engineering Hall into a more versatile architectural environment.

Location:Near the west gate of Tianjin University’s old campus

Site Area: 1.98 hectares

Existing Buildings: 13 structures with low building density

Features:A pond in the center adds vibrancy to both the architecture and the natural environment.

The site’s eastern side borders Tianjin University’s Friendship Lake, with picturesque rows of weeping willows along the shore. The western side is adjacent to Tianjin University’s affiliated elementary school. The northern side faces Tianjin University’s 42nd Dormitory, while the southern side is close to the Soil

The area in front on the north side experiences heavy pedestrian and traffic flow, while on the west side, the nearby elementary school often causes traffic congestion during drop-off and pick-up times.

The crowd on the northeast side mostly consists of teachers, university students, and the general public, while the crowd on the northwest side predominantly includes the general public and elementary school students.

North side: Nanfeng Road, 8 meters. West side: Hubin Road, 8 meters. East side: Jinhui Road, 3.5 meters.

The site’s landscape design is particularly beautiful, with Tianjin University’s Friendship Lake on the east side, where rows of elegant trees line the riverbank. Their reflections dance on the water, and leaves—both yellow and green— gracefully fall, creating a picturesque scene. A pond in the center of the site adds vitality to the architecture and enhances the natural ambiance.

Existing Building Analysis

- There aren’t enough parking spaces, and since the site is near an elementary school, parents picking up their children often park along the road, leading to frequent traffic congestion.

- Some of the buildings on the site are old and unused.

- The site’s architecture lacks connection with the surround-

- Enhance the living experience for international students in China.

- Create a space that fosters intensive social interactions.

- Elevate Tianjin University’s reputation and strengthen the physical relationship between the campus and the city.

- Being located at an intersection and near a school contributes to traffic congestion.

- Some buildings are very old, showing significant wear and tear, and are at risk of collapse.

Masterplan Concept Design

Given the site’s conditions, with frequent traffic congestion and heavy pedestrian flow on the north and west sides, the internal traffic flow should be reorganized. To alleviate these issues, all entrances and exits will be relocated to the east side of the site.

One area will be an ideal spot for people to relax by the beautiful lake. Another section will be designated as a recreational space for students. The final area will be a park open to everyone, offering a place for leisure and play. These additions will make the site more engaging and meaningful.

The outdoor and indoor pathways of varying heights will connect the new and existing buildings, offering diverse perspectives and enhancing the relationship between people, the surrounding environment, and the architec-

The central main building is designed to be slightly taller than the surrounding structures, allowing the site to receive more sunlight.

Architecture Research Center

Architecture Research Center

Project is located in Tianjin University (卫津路校区), Tianjin, china. There are three main points in project design: concept, space and feeling.

CONCEPT design driven by nature, From the beginning I have two ideas, one is about a nature and other one is about the place that make people have a good feeling and comfortable. I call it 1+1=1, the meaning is combination of these ideas creates a new concept. I design building floating in the air and it seem like support by trees. Absolutely I Think about feeling of people through the building and at the same time we create nature for the nature too.SPACE, the large space allocation makes the user less pressurized, especially the opening of the gap in the center of the building let the light shines into the building, allowing the user to enjoy a truly natural feeling.

FEELING, create a natural feeling for users, get a new experience with a healthy living, in order to make users enjoy nature both indoors and outdoors of building.

The compettition for muti-general family bathroom design

Muti-generation family(Sok San Family)

I am very gratified with my toilet. It is not only a toilet space but also provides more space for my family than the toilet. At the same time, we can use the space we need, such as going to the toilet, bathing, washing clothes, and brushing our teeth. Therefore, it gives my family so much convenience that they don‘t have to wait for someone to use the bathroom before going in. The toilet now gives us four different spaces, including multi-functional space, bathroom space, toilet space, and washbasin space. So when I take a bath, my grandmother can use the toilet, my mother can bathe my children, and my husband can brush his teeth and wash his face, saving so much time for my family. This is the space that we really need.

Morakot grand granny: All these kids always like that!!
Vivid:
kim Mama: Sethaya my good grand child stay calm! granny give you take a bath and then wear good dress go to school, daddy and mommy wait you huh.....
Sethaya: Kim granny it's too cold can you bath me a warm water....
Vilita: Mom, Grandma take a bath for me already! And Sethaya is taking a bath now!
