Our design should definitely be site specific that respond to it’s unique context like considering climate conditions. Reflect narratives of the human condition having all the design and construction be a memorable and spatial journey. All installed designs shall avoid the obvious.

Each constructed design shall evoke “Stratified Wonder.

Students will implement a design process that utilizes the methodology and tools introduced and applied in the first half of this semester. 1. Precedence Research 2. 2. Gestural Charcoal Drawing 3. Collage 4. Exploring and directly experiencing our environment 5. 3D or 2D compositions. 6. Modeling:. 7. Metaphoric Positions, The Narrative, Outline of Events, Storyboard, and Matrix of Possibilities. 8. Dualities and Oppositions. 9. Relational and Organizational Types 10. Basic Design Elements and Principles: 11. Kit of Parts and SWOT 12. An Iterative Process

Week 9 – October 11-24: Precedence Research – Seeking Inspiration / Structure and the Built Environment / Construct a Small Scale Model that Explores a selected Structural Approach – Iteration 1

Final Project Resources and Provocations Folding – a process that turns a two dimensional surface into a three dimensional one to produce both surface and structure Forming – generating parts from a small number of molds or forms Sectioning – a series of profiles whose edges follow line of surface geometry are assembled as serialized and parallel sections to produce both surface and structure Tessellation – a collection of pieces that fit together without gaps to for a plane or surface

Possible model Inspired by origami kirigami or folding. I want to make a model that is intriguing and maybe transforms to another figure that accommodates a person for relaxation.

Iteration 1 I’ve cut some slits on a piece of chipboard making sure that there is repletion and symmetry aspects. I have a hard time thinking of what materials to be used to utilize this design as it transforms. Tensioning is one aspect that need to be researches and thought of more.

Week 10 – October 19-25: Program & Site Analysis with Documentation / Small Scale Studies applying student selected approach (Folding, Sectioning, Tessellating, and/or Tensioning) – Final Project Iterations 2 & 3, exploratory construction

Site Analysis Distinguishing three possible sites for the next iterations.

Iteration 2 Inspired by folding, I’ve designed a unique way of having a kind of tent that sunlight can still manifest freely.

Iteration 3 Pop-up cards inspired structure. I’ve envision this as space saving stricture that can be used as a seating area and when it is folded the other way maybe another compelling set of seating are will appear living two sets both back and front.

Week 11 – October 26-November 1: Research / Small Scale Studies applying Folding, Tessellating, or Tensioning – Final Project Iterations 4, 5, & 6

Iteration 4 Making use of the planter box and emphasizing o the “face structure/wall” that lies at the courtyard. I envision a figure, n this case a cube to be placed on top f the planter box and have another structure, an accordion typed structure, to enclose the cube leaving somewhat a private place to appreciate its beauty. Lights could be an option insight the cube.

Iteration 5 Triangular columns or frames that rotates. Mimics the tree and blends in with the environmet

Iteration 6 Pine cone inspired. Opens and closes To magnify the sight and let shade be emphasized

Week 12 – November 2-8: Research Continued: Sectioning, Tensioning, Tessellating, and Folding; Team Design Work (Final Project Iterations 7,8, & 9); Safety Workshop

Design Team Members: Project Manager Design Director Site Coordinator: Photographer: Bookkeeper:

Teams were made and assigned tasked were also made. We’ve al agreed o having a structure that we can all agree on and have our intentions be emphasized as well.

“An interactive journey of transformation from simple to complex” These were the concepts each of our models had: 1. Jeremy: Framing a space through repetition of shapes and modules 2. Maria: Creating a visual object that is intriguing/sculptural 3. Yucong: Order in chaos… simple to complex 4. Chad: Visitor completes the space - interactive spaces 5. Juveriyah: Synthetic vs. nature...A journey

variation in

Our focus in order of frequency per vote was 1.Interaction 2.Journey of transformation 3.Simple to complex

Design Concept – Draft Issue: There are oppositions that continue to generate issues that threaten peace, civility, and sustainability that originate from contrasting values and beliefs. Resolution: Sustained and accessible communications between opposing groups of people can mitigate conflicts and foster collaborative activities that serve the common good. Since communication starts with perceptions, we are designing a means in which two opposing groups can find commonalities through vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Description: This “Environmental Installation for Resolving Conflicts” is first comprised of two different and separate stair assemblies located at opposing ends of the existing courtyard planter of trees, which are part of our natural world. In this group of trees, there is a natural low point where one on one side can see another on the opposite side. One set of stairs welcomes people approaching from the existing breezeway. The other greets those who exit from the studio doors in Batmale 246. The tops of each stair assembly offer a vision to the other side. However for whatever reasons, we cannot assume that everyone will wish to ascend to these heights. So, we provide other means of communicating that are designed as integral components of each stair structure:  Sight: Periscopes on either end allow another way of seeing what is happening across “The Forest”  Hearing: “Hearing Horns” magnify the quiet uttering of voices otherwise unheard  Taste: A system of pulleys allows one side to offer gifts of tasty treats that can be enjoyed no matter how conflicting one’s views or values are  Touch: vibrations can be initiated at one end and felt across the divide; at either end, found natural and synthetic materials are enhanced in both tactile and visual ways to encourage designed actions, e.g. a pull handle made from a beautiful piece of found wood  Smell: The aroma of offered treats can be experienced before ingesting, e.g. Hershey’s Kisses

Week 13 – November 9-15: Logistical Planning / Procurement of Construction Materials & Tools Option of Starting Construction Early

Construction Safety Hazard: - Common Sense (Don’t be drunk) - Clean Work Station - Don’t be on a rush - Use tools appropriately - Use safety googles, dust masks and gloves - Wear the appropriate clothing - Unplug tools when changing blades. - Read the tool manual - Inspect if the tool is in a good working status - Inspect plugs - Work in a safe environment

Week 14 – November 16-22: Installation Initiated (23 Calendar Day Duration): 30 % Complete by End of Week

Frames were made out of 2x4 plywood and screws

Week 15 – November 23-29: Installation Continued: 60 % Complete by End of Week

The platform is laid with plywood and the frames we’re assembled as series of steps

Week 16 – November 30-December 6: Installation Continued: 90 % Complete by End of Week

The two pathways of different journey was almost completed. It was hard at first but we got the hang of it for we all helped one another.

Week 17 – December 7-13: Installation Completed: 100 % Complete by End of Tuesday, December 8 / Team Presentations & Critiques by Guest Jurors

•Our original metaphor was to connect various different types of people through a common ground. •The different aspects continuously play into this metaphor • The contrasting sides show discord, but have a meeting point at the top as well as a system in which they have to work together to get a reward • The dichotomy of isolation vs. a social gathering was emphasized

As two people meet they’ve’ interacted to share some commonalities and share what they have on each side. Sense of Touch, Taste , Hearing

Critique: Great transformation from previous iterations and construction detail but could have used other materials. The model could have been more compelling if we added a representation of a tree even though our model was beautifully done. The journey could have been explained differently. We Should have added the aspect of frame also to the ramp. Ascending set of frames that mimics the look of a ramp. Scaled up more for people to interact under the framed structure.

SWOT Strengths Makes strong models but doesn’t know how to justify them. Having patience over my groupmates and being able to work with them well. Engaging myself for our success. Weaknesses Being shy and not confident over my work. Not truly expressing what I want to portray. I make use of time for granted. I always do things at the last minute and sometimes doesn’t care. Objectives Working and learning from people to have inspiration over the project. Actual construction experience. Treats Weather, patience on individual model making, schedule management, communication

Conclusion Often times I’m not confident about my work and I’m shy of letting other people see my work. I learned to not hesitate on saying what I want o express. It may not be visually what I’ve indented but other people can see my design compelling and inspiring and they can help in fully engaging the design aspects that they see through it. Experience is important I learned that comradery truly is needed in making a successful project. And the people around you can surely inspire and help you in this progress of learning architecture. Learning from mistakes, weaknesses and failures is key on making studying architecture. I’ve learned to not be afraid and just let myself interact whatever the outcome may be.
