PROFILE Hi, I am Sin Yi Wong. I am a graduate student in architecture course from Newcastle University. During these three years of university life, I make an effort to learn different softwares to develop my skills in architecture to establish a unique style in design. These technical skills rekindled my interest in other design industries, such as graphic, branding and product design. My passion towards design gave me opportunities to work with retailers and associations. I combine my energy and creativity to deliver impactful design solutions to help promoting events and services. Studying architecture in university endow me with the desirable knowledge and skills to pursue my career in the design industry.

Architecture Graduation Project
01 s e p t 2 0 1 5 - m ay 2 0 1 6
INSPIRED BY SIR JOHN SOANE For my third year architectural project, I have to design a monumental structure for Sir John Soane and an extension towards his museum in London. The core theme of the project is to explore on his signature style and creatively expand his concepts.
- VOID
INDICATION IN WIRE FRAME -
PERSPECTIVE PROJECTION
Transforming neoclassical architecture in a new structure inspired by John Soane’s design, where people experience the journey in the walled path while different amount of light penetrates through the top of the structure emphasizing the different intensities within the space. The concrete wall with vines emphasize the concept of historical traces, while fitting with the surrounding environment in Leazes park.
- REFLECTIVE
PALACE -
The highly reflective flooring emphasize the natural light from the middle of the domed ceiling, penetrating to the monument at the centre of the space. The veticle walls are reflected by the mirrored surface that covered the entire floor to enhance the structural and light experience, creating the illusion of infinity. The idea is inspired by the use of convex mirrors in the Breakfast room designed by John Soane.
- INT O
THE GRIDS -
Reinforced concrete is the main material that supports the structure, will ring-beam foundation that spread the weight of the heavy structure. Pillars underground are placed every 2 meters , adding support to the structure. With steel screens with vines it shows a sense of antiquity and traces of the past. It coped with the concept , reminding people of Sir John Soane and the architectural designs in the past like a short journey of revisiting.

- LIBRARY functionEXTENSION diagram
Sir John Soane Museum is a research library that contains Soane’s collection of architectural drawings and a huge book collection. I decided to extend this concept to create a spiral of knowledge, with a ramp that surrounds a library shelving system to match Soane’s concept of educating and inspiring architects in the future. The ramp is in 1:20 gradient, accessible for all with user friendly stoppers and seating areas; while there are also stair case and lift for effective access in all levels.
- VISUAL
CONNECTION OF THE OLD AND NEW
-
There are three openings from the new extension, allowing visitors to view some of the main spaces/ features of Sir John Soane Museum from a different angle. These windows provide the scenery of the skylights from top view, the Monk’s Yard and the Monk’s Parlour on different floors.
