2022-23Report Annual2022-23 Report Annual
Welcome Dear Francis Parker Community, We are proud to present the 2022-23 Annual Report to the Wyvern community. This publication highlights our achievements and celebrates our loyal supporters for the 2022-23 fiscal year. There is so much that goes in to making each school year a success, starting with our incredible faculty and staff who work tirelessly to deliver our mission in new and imaginative ways each year. Additionally, our Trustees play a significant role as volunteer leaders who work in partnership with the School to help shape and execute our strategic direction, while safeguarding our short- and long-term financial position. We engage in this work for one reason: our students! They are the reason we do what we do every day. But we know that none of this would be possible without the generosity and support of the individuals and organizations acknowledged in this Report. The 2022-23 school year marked the beginning of our journey under the new Francis Parker name and brand. The School’s opening enrollment this year was 484 in PS-12, which is the highest in five years, and we believe this signals continued growth for next year. While the name and branding of the School have changed, our mission is unchanged; we are still “The School of Thought” because teaching students HOW to think, not WHAT to think is the foundation of our teaching and learning philosophy. For the first time in our history, the School’s name aligns with and matches our mission, vision, and core values, and our goal with this change is that more families and students who desire our Progressive approach to teaching and learning will find us. The 2022-23 school year was an exceptional year in terms of the growth of our endowment, which bodes well for the future of the School. When we became one school in 2012, our endowment was $2 million. Growing our endowment has been a facet of our ongoing Capital Campaign, “Building an Abundant Future for Francis Parker,” as a strong endowment helps ensure the long-term financial strength and stability of the School. Multiple, transformative gifts this year, including a large bequest from a founding High School faculty member, added to our endowment so that it is just over $7.5 million. This not only ensures our future, but also adds significant annual revenue to our operating budget through our investment policy, which allows us to take a draw of 4% on a three-year rolling average. In 2022-23, these gifts collectively allowed us to increase faculty salaries to meet and, in some cases exceed, the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) average, as well as increase the percentage of the scholarships that we fund each year. These achievements and so many more are only possible through the support of countless individuals who believe strongly in our mission. The individuals listed on these pages and the personal resources they have committed to elevate and sustain our mission make everything we do possible. Our gratitude is immeasurable – we simply cannot be “The School of Thought” without your support. Thank you once again for your support in 2022-23 and going forward. Gratefully,
Alexandra S. Thurstone G’80, ’84 Head of School

Chair - Ginny Frazier Through the incredible loyalty and generosity of the Wyvern community, the School has been able to create stunning new spaces for our students to learn, grow, and play. With over $23 million raised, multiple projects have already been completed: a new gym on the Goshen Campus; an expansion of the High School; the Goshen Lobby & Theater; and, most recently, the Wyvern Indoor Turf & Training Center. Beginning in 2012 and still underway, the Capital Campaign has been a series of phases that correspond to four building projects outlined in the Master Facilities Plan. Phasing the Campaign has allowed the School to complete priority projects along the way rather than planning for one all-encompassing, comprehensive building project. We are now in the final phase of this campaign and are focusing our efforts on the largest, most transformational project: the Downtown Athletic & Wellness Center, which will include regulation basketball and volleyball courts, locker rooms, concessions, and a STEM Lab; plus, the final phase includes several projects on the Goshen campus: a Tennis & Pickleball Center, an Outdoor Learning Center, a Tinkerlab, and additional Lower School classrooms. We look forward to sharing our continued progress as we work with our community of friends and supporters to meet this important goal that will allow us to create the space our Downtown Campus and its students have always needed.

Why We Give Stewart Lussky & Bob Jones, 2022-23 Annual Fund Chairs Parents of Fairleigh Jones G’19, ’23
Like many of you, we marvel every day at how our son has navigated his growing-up years with wise guidance and support from the faculty at Francis Parker. Francis Parker has been transformative for him, providing space for him to explore his wide and varied interests and to grow into a young man ready to take charge of his own future. This school will always hold a special place in our hearts and we happily support it, helping to ensure that it is here for future students.

In Memoriam IN MEMORY OF RON MIKULAK
Ron Mikulak passed away in January 2023. Ron was a founding faculty member at the High School, where he taught English for 25 years and was awarded faculty emeritus status upon his retirement in 2003. Upon his passing, Ron made a sizable gift to the School from his estate to establish two endowment funds: one, a professional development fund so that he could help current and future faculty members continue learning and growing at Francis Parker; and the other, a scholarship in the name of his beloved wife Ann Stewart Anderson (also a founding High School faculty member).
