Stage, formerly The Second Stage. As they continue to grow that stage, it just gets to be a bigger and better part of Saturday in the Park every year. Sir Mix-a-Lot and the other bands playing will be huge in their own right, and it’s also pretty cool that we’re closing with some EDM by a DJ out of Des Moines. That’s a format that really hasn’t been well played out in Sioux City. That’s what Saturday in the Park is all about: being able to present new forms of live music and test their interest level in the community. Coming off of last year DAVE BERNSTEIN‌ with Foster the People, Gogol Bordello and, of course, Aretha Franklin, that was aturday in the Park ebbs and really special and the only kind of special flows. This year we also unfortunately lost one of our founding members/critical catalytic folks involved in Saturday in the Park. That was Joanne Grueskin. She passed away about six months ago. Joanne, besides being the mother of multiple friends of mine, was on the city council at the time of Saturday in the Park. Her son Tom worked on Saturday in the Park along with Adam Feiges and me. Tom told her the idea and she took us under her wing. Without Joanne, Saturday in the Park would have never happened. I can absolutely say that. We were just a couple of kids who were 24 or 25 years old and she polished this up and got us in front of the city council and helped us to do what we did. She was always heavily involved. Her loss is very, very sad. We lost a very wonderful person. And she also held the trophy for “most family members on the Saturday in the Park committee” for a long period of time. Last year there was this pressure every time I went somewhere. People would be like, “Hey man! What are you getting for the 25th anniversary? I’m guessing it’s going to be amazing! It’s going to be The Rolling Stones and you’re going to be bring Jimi Hendrix back from the dead!” There was so much pressure, whereas this year it was back to what it normally is: a blank slate. That was really a great thing. We continue to have transitions on the committee and bring in new folks. And we’ll continue transitioning going forward. Dee and George Polak have been so crucial to Saturday in the Park over the years. What they do is amazing. They hold it all together. Guys like John Steever, who has been running the production for many years, are crucial as well and provide a level of consistency that’s so valuable to what we do. Saturday in the Park is a product of the community. The city is very, very helpful.

The volunteers are critical as well as the committee members – both new and old. We couldn’t do this without the sponsors. We continue to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to be able to do this. And that’s why it’s free, which we should never take for granted. Siouxland as a whole is really a place where something like this can thrive. Because no matter who you call within the community, people are always ready to jump in and help. I’m reminded of how old I’m getting around this time of year. And I’m also reminded of how awesome summer is and how awesome live music is and how awesome it is to work on a festival. For me, and I think for most people on the committee, the planning can be stressful, but in the end when it starts to unfold and you’re starting to build a stage and you’re starting to build out the site and it starts to come together, building up toward that Saturday is really fun. It’s awesome to be able to go through that collectively with a great group of people. What we really have is a great family of people working on this. It’s rewarding to see all your friends and community members coming out for it and enjoying it and having a great time. It’s just really a special thing. For the amount of thanks that we as a committee get, there are a lot of thanks that are owed by us to the community for allowing us to be able to do it. It’s not a favor that we’re doing for the community. This is a gift that we’re given to do this. And we enjoy doing it. I can promise you if you come to Saturday in the Park this year, you’re going to see some stuff you know, hear some songs you know and you’re going to hear some stuff you don’t know. And you’re going to love the stuff you don’t know. If there’s one thing I can guarantee you, it’s that you’re going to see a lot of great live music. That’s what it’s all about.

Kim Simmonds & Savoy Brown at 1:45 p.m. on the Bandshell Stage during Saturday in the Park.

KIM SIMMONDS & SAVOY BROWN FINDS NEW CHALLENGES,

26 Years and Counting From the legends to the rising stars, so many amazing acts have graced the Saturday in the Park stages over the past 26 years: Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, BB King, The Black Crowes, Santana, Jonny Lang, Melissa Etheridge, The Avett Brothers, Cee Lo Green, Steve Winwood, Buddy Guy, Blues Traveler, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Wilco…the list goes on and on. Cloverleaf Cold Storage has been there for them all! We take great pride in saying we have supported bringing this incredible music festival to our employees, friends, family and the community of Sioux City since day 1. Here’s to 26 spectacular years and many more!

STRIVE FOR HONESTY

K

BY CHRISTOPHER BRAUNSCHWEIG‌

im Simmonds is the kind of musician that enjoys making things harder for himself. And if he can help it, he’ll outright ignore the easy routes or shortcuts in life. On stage, Simmonds will deliberately use equipment that makes it difficult for him to play. Why? He enjoys conquering those career challenges. The 68-year-old blues rock musician

and founding member of the band Savoy Brown has been rockin’ houses since 1965. Although Simmonds is trying not to let age catch up to him, he is currently making adjustments to make his job just a tiny bit easier for himself. “I’m one of those people where if somebody expects something from me, well, I’m going to do the opposite thing,” said Simmonds during a phone

BIG HEAD TODD &ISTHE MONSTERS IN IT FOR THE

SHEER JOY

F

BY CHRISTOPHER BRAUNSCHWEIG‌

or more than 30 years, Big Head Todd & The Monsters have been wowing audiences with its hybrid rock sound and energetic live shows. Having already performed at Saturday in the Park in 1997, Big Head Todd & The Monsters should have no problem reclaiming its fan base and putting on another great show. Frontman Todd Park Mohr spoke of the band’s more recent challenges as well as Park Mohr’s knack for improvised solos: What would you say is challenging you the most today as a musician? The only challenging part about being a musician is that you have to travel. That’s really the only hard part. The rest of it is pretty awesome work. I’ve actually heard that from a number of musicians. Why is that? It’s just a practical reality. When you’re a musician such as myself your livelihood is on the road. Hopefully you can manage it or manage your schedule in such a way that you can enjoy life. Traveling is a difficult life. Do you still play music or work on your breaks from touring? I play music every day. I’m working on a blues album right now and we’re going to do touring in the fall with Mud Morganfield and Billy Branch – we have a blues configuration we do every four or five years. I’m producing an album for that. So I’m busy all the time! No matter what!

What keeps you doing all these? Well it’s incredible work. If you’re involved in creating culture or writing or whatever it is, I think that is incredible work if you have the mind for it. Nothing rivals it. You need the ‘mind’ for it? If you’re in a creative work, you need to have the will to do it, I would say. That’s what I mean by that. Do you ever come across those times in your life when you think the ‘will’ is gone? For me, personally, no. But I meet a lot of people that decide to be artists and they want to, but at the end of the day they don’t have the will to do it. How do you keep that sound mind? It’s the joy of the work. It’s great. Any time you’re involved in music at a high level – for example, if you’re a pianist – it’s a rare and special thing to be able to

facilitate that music. If you can do it, it’s a great thing.

Big Head Todd & The Monsters perform at 5 p.m. on the Bandshell Stage during Saturday in the Park.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do? Playing music for people, of course. I enjoy that the most. Bringing an album into the world is a nice thing, too – finishing and producing something. Those are incredibly fun things. From what I’ve gathered, people seem to really enjoy your guitar solos. When you’re doing those at live shows, are they planned or impromptu? Unfortunately for me I don’t plan my solos. There’s good and bad to that. A lot of guitar players like Stevie Ray [Vaughn], their solos are the same every time. I really don’t plan much. And there’s good and bad to that? Well, look at Stevie Ray Vaughn’s career. When you listen to his songs and the recordings, they’re impeccable and

PROVIDED

magnificent. The solos are perfect. He’s fleshed through them musically. They’re their own songs. Often time soloists like that are pretty incredible. There are other kings of solos that are a bit more improvisational. There’s good and bad to that because you can really tap into things that can only happen at one time and are incredibly magical, especially when you’re in a live band. The downside is you might run out of a good plan. You might have just planned yourself out of a good plan. I’m always fascinated with how those spontaneous solos even happen. How do those start for you? You know, I have to work on it note by note. I have an idea of what I’m going to do when I come in, but if things go well for me I really don’t know what’s going to happen next. I just kind of feel my way around and try to get good things happening.

he alternative South African rock band Kongos released its second studio album “Lunatic” in 2012, but it would take two more years and significant airplay of the single “Come with Me Now” to attract a large enough audience in the United States. The song appeared in numerous commercials, TV shows and movie trailers, giving the band even more momentum. After numerous tours, Kongos was finally able to record a follow-up album this year. Band members and brothers Dylan, Daniel, Jesse and Johnny Kongos have dubbed the CD “Egomaniac.” It was released June 10. Dylan spoke about the band’s recent release as well as what’s in store for Kongos: The name of the album is “Egomaniac.” What is the significance behind that title? It’s kind of a follow up to “Lunatic,” which is our previous album, and it’s another human quality or human flaw. But a lot of the songs on this album reference or talk about this kind of theme of egomania within ourselves and also with everyone else. What sort of things did you discover while exploring that theme of egomania? It’s a huge condition that everyone is affected by. We didn’t want to limit the scope of it to the Donald Trumps or the Kanye Wests of the world because they’re kind of the obvious egomaniacs. Down to the very last person on earth has this ego inside that sometimes takes control of them and is not necessarily the best or the most useful characteristic.

the band? Pretty much everything! We are truly control freaks. It’s our lives. It’s our career. We’ve been doing it for 13 or 14 years now and we’re at that point where we want to be in control of everything creative at least – our image, music videos and music. I would definitely say I’m an egomaniac about that. I think that’s related to the work we’re doing. You often get caught up in it, but you gotta step back. But even in everyday life there are so many tools for this egomania. There are selfies [taken] every single day. Is it difficult to take control when you have three brothers that also share the band? Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes that’s our biggest obstacle. We all have huge egos and all have very strong opinions about the band and where it should go. But for the most part we are really on the same page. We’ve been doing this for so long that we’ve gotten beyond the point of having to fight over things. In terms of the creativity of this band, we think it’s the only way to work. Until we ask for it, we don’t want anyone else’s opinion or anyone else’s input.

What’s the best thing Kongos has going for it right now? I personally think it’s the songwritWould you say that you are an egomaniac? ing. et’s get a few things straight: Kacey Musgraves ain’t no “Dime Store Cowgirl” who is willing to “Follow Your Arrow” in a misguided effort to mend “Mama’s Broken Heart.” She may be “Blowing Smoke” on the “Merry Go ‘Round” but this is one country chick who is definitely “Pageant Material.” Or more precisely, Musgraves is Saturday in the Park-worthy. Don’t believe us? Here are 20 things you should know about this “Same Trailer, Different Park” girl.

1.

Musgraves has been writing music since she was 8 years old. Indeed, her first song – “Notice Me” – was written for her elementary school graduation.

2.

After becoming proficient on the mandolin, she started taking guitar lesson at age 12. By the time she turned 18, Musgraves was already recording demo tapes and hitting the music festival circuit in her native Texas.

3.

Musgraves was a contestant on “Nashville Star,” an “American Idol”-type TV competition show. Out of the 10 performers on the show, she came in seventh place.

4.

Which isn’t to say Musgraves isn’t used to winning the top prizes. In 2013, she picked up a CMA “Best New Artist” award; Grammys for Best Country Song (“Merry Go ‘Round”) and Best Country Album (“Same Trailer, Different Park”); and an ACM Album of the Year award (“Same Trailer, Different Park”). She was also awarded a 2014 CMA Song of the Year for “Follow Your Arrow” and a 2016 CMA International Achievement award.

ooking back at his career which has spanned nearly three decades, Sir Mix-a-Lot said the thing he’s most proud of is his decision making. He’s proud of his practically forced decision to debut as an indie hip-hop artist. He’s proud of his decision to upgrade to a major label. And he’s proud of his de-

cision to leave the major label to become an independent artist once more. Some of his choices were lucky and well thought out. “I’d love to say they were all well thought out, but they weren’t,” said Sir Mix-a-Lot – whose real name is Anthony Ray – during a phone interview. When he did make a mistake, the only thing the 52-year-old rapper could do was turn it into a learning experience.

If I make a mistake, I pick myself up, dust it off and go, OK, here’s what I did wrong and I won’t do that again. And I usually don’t.” The Seattle-born musician – who had the world’s population exclaiming their love for “big butts” with his Grammy Award winning single “Baby Got Back” released in 1992 – is keeping himself busy and active nowadays, performing numerous tours and even spearheading his own tech company. He sees himself as flying both above and below the radar. “I don’t like to be the center of attention,” he said, “but I’m damn sure I don’t want to be forgotten about.” With an easily recognizable song like “Baby Got Back” under Sir Mix-a-Lot’s belt, it would be difficult to be completely forgotten. However, the rapper found success before his now signature track was even released. The 1988 album “Swass” was certified platinum and the 1989 follow-up “Seminar” managed to reach gold status before his highest-peaking album ever “Mack Daddy” debuted.

She said, ‘Today, you’re Elvis Presley and you just went on the Ed Sullivan Show and shook your hips a little bit too much.’ And I knew exactly what she meant. I became the forbidden fruit, which meant that the song would live on forever. And it did.”

Due to federal regulations, we are unable to offer separate shuttle bus service. However, we encourage those with disabilities to use the city

Please leave your dogs, cats, tribbles and alligators at home this year. The large crowds and heat that we frequently have at the festival are not good for your pet, who might suffer from heat stress or even get

If you leave your TV set tuned to “Animal Planet” and plenty of animal beverages around, your pets should do fine on their own. Of course, with any adult doggie beverages, make sure that your dog is at least 3 years old (21 in dog years). Special note to the Swamp People: Iowa does not have an alligator hunting season. Duck Commander duck calls will be used to round up any ducks brought to the park. “River monsters” must be left in the Missouri River.
