Tri-State Area College Fair is April 23 Students and families can visit with representatives from nearly 80 colleges during the Tri-State Area College Fair, Sunday, April 23 from 1-3 p.m. at the Marina Center, 4th & B streets in South Sioux City. This free event is sponsored by EducationQuest Foundation, Siouxland Area High School Counselors and Northwest Area Education Agency. The college fair is especially important for high school juniors who should narrow their college choices before taking the ACT this spring and applying for financial aid and college admission early in the fall. The fair will also help seniors finalize their college decision, and sophomores start their college search process.
THE
Students should follow these tips to help them make the most of their college fair visit: Before attending, register for a barcode at NebraskaCollegeFairs. org. Print the barcode, or download it to your smartphone, and take it to the fair so college reps can scan it. Determine which colleges you want to visit (a list of participating colleges is available in the College Fair article at EducationQuest.org). Prepare a list of questions to ask the college representatives. Ask about deadlines to apply for admission, scholarships, and financial aid. Who is EducationQuest Foundation? Make the most of a college visit BY EDUCATIONQUEST FOUNDATION
College visits help you discover a school’s culture, campus, and the surrounding community while learning about the admissions and financial aid processes. Visit colleges during your junior year and in the fall of your senior year. Begin with the college website where you should find a section for prospective students – and might be able to register for a campus visit. Read the online campus newspaper and get information about student services and employment. Look for departmental web pages
to learn about areas of study that interest you. Schedule your campus visit at least two weeks in advance. Try to visit when school is in session to get the true flavor of the campus. At most colleges, you can join a group campus visit or set up an individual visit. It’s helpful to visit your top colleges a second time. Be prepared to ask lots of questions. For a list, see Campus Visit Questions in the Selecting a College section at EducationQuest. org. Also, take notes and photos – you’ll be glad you did when it’s time to make your final college decision.
‘Laker family’ becomes a Harmon tradition Iowa Lakes Community College athletics is truly a Laker family affair for the Harmons. RaeAhna Harmon is the third in the family to find herself at Iowa Lakes Community College, and all three students have been highly involved in athletics. A freshman on the Laker volleyball squad, RaeAhna’s hard work has paid off — she was recently named Iowa Community College Athletics Conference “Freshman of the Year.” “As a team, we had an up-and-down year, but as a coach, I could always count on RaeAhna to come through and give her all every match,” said Coach Lea Hartigan. She shines in the classroom as well. “This is an outstanding family which I have enjoyed
Narrow down your college choices BY EDUCATIONQUEST FOUNDATION
Start narrowing your college choices during your junior year. This will give you more time to determine which school is the best fit, and to meet admission and financial aid deadlines. Answer these questions to get started: What do you want to study? If you know what you want to study, research schools that offer degree programs in that area. If you don’t know what to study, it’s okay. Many students begin college “undeclared” and some start at a community college and then transfer to a four-year school. What kind of school do you want to attend? Do you prefer a large university or a small college?
Are you interested in a community college? What kind of student/teacher ratio do you want? What can you afford? Consider the overall cost of college: tuition, room and board, books, transportation costs, and personal expenses. Determine what you and your parents can afford to pay out-ofpocket and plan to apply for financial aid to make up the difference. Calculate the loan debt your family may need to incur for your college education. Where do you want to go to college? Do you want to live close to home and commute? Do you want to be in a large city or a small town? How big of a factor is out-ofstate or private college tuition? If you want to go out of state, investigate reciprocity programs such
as the Midwest Student Exchange Program. Avoid these college search mistakes: Don’t limit your search to familiar institutions. Just because your parents or siblings went to a certain college doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Don’t limit your search to colleges you think you can afford. The more expensive the school, the more financial aid you may be eligible to receive. Do some financial aid-related research (using net price calculators, talking to an EducationQuest specialist, or a representative from the college) before crossing these schools off your list. Don’t choose a college just because it’s near your boyfriend or girlfriend. The school may not be a good match for you – and he or she may not be either!

RaeAhna Harmon is the third member of her family to attend Iowa Lakes Community College. getting to know,” said Troy Larson, Iowa Lakes athletic director and head men’s basketball coach. Five years ago, the family journey began. Parents Kyna and Doug Harmon live in Waterville, Minn., where Kyna is lead
manager of Kamp Dels campground. Doug works in corrections. The first Harmon to venture off to Iowa Lakes was their son, Tate. Coach Larson had attended a couple of Tate’s high school basketball games. “He kept in touch with Tate as the season progressed which was a big deal to Tate,” said Doug Harmon. Tate and his parents scheduled a campus visit. “Coming from a small town, we appreciated the fact that there were smaller class sizes where the students and teachers actually got to know one another,” Doug said. And they liked that Iowa Lakes had its own criminal justice program. “The teachers are there to teach, and help the students succeed,” Doug said.
Doug also praised the coaches for supporting students both educationally and athletically. “We have found that our children, starting a junior college, have had a great experience — which made the transition to a fouryear school much easier,” Doug said. Landon followed his brother two years later. “I think they recognized the family atmosphere, and it mirrored their family dynamics,” Larson said. Tate and Landon often brought team members to their house, where they enjoyed family time with the Harmons and joked they had been “Harmonized.” The Harmon family has impacted many Iowa Lakes students over the years, leaving a lasting impression on the faculty and staff.

Transfer hard-earned credits to a degree Make the most of an associate’s degree For years, Bellevue University and Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) have partnered to assure that students’ associate’s degrees transfer successfully to their bachelor’s degrees. Now, Bellevue University is giving yet another reason to enroll: a $1,500 scholarship, with no application fee or transfer fees. It’s time to find out how Bellevue University can help students complete their bachelor’s degrees in less time, with less money, through a program that provides REAL learning for REAL life. Here’s How It Works Bellevue University’s generous credit transfer policy fully supports WITCC students. In fact, Bellevue University was honored in 2017 as having “The Most Generous Credit Transfer Policy” by
Online Course Report and selected as among the nation’s best for Community College Transfer by Phi Theta Kappa’s Transfer Honor Roll. Larry Beach, WITCC’s dedicated Bellevue University representative, works with grads to help them make the most of their associate’s degree investment and transfer successfully to Bellevue University. Beach says Bellevue University’s generous articulation policy is one benefit that sets the university apart – especially among transfer students. “Many colleges and universities, when accepting community college transfers, insist that a certain number of general education and electives credits, in addition to major requirements, be taken on their campuses. We don’t do that. In fact, we encourage students to complete their associate’s degrees at the community college
before transferring, then we accept the degrees in full,” he says. Bellevue University accepts all the credit in AA, AS, and AAS degrees. That’s in addition to military training experience and relevant career training. Beach says the difference this makes can’t be underestimated. “I can’t tell you what it means to these students to see their hard work recognized, when so many other colleges have hemmed and hawed about, ‘well, this may transfer, but not this,’” he says. “We cut right through that at Bellevue University. You’ve earned an associate’s degree, and that means something. We’re here to help you take that next step in your education.” Learn 100% Online One of the first to offer degree programs online, Bellevue University was named a Top Ten University for Adult Learners by Washington Monthly in 2016. The
$1,500
University is committed to ensuring that students enjoy a rich and interactive learning experience. “Bellevue University understands that education makes the difference in lives today. In fact, it’s the single most important asset a person can attain to meet career and life goals,” says Beach. “And we believe that what you know is more important than where or how you learned it. And we’re going to give you a $1,500 scholarship because we have that much faith in your abilities.” “We exist to help students succeed by providing REAL learning for REAL life – the deep, relevant knowledge that can be applied real-time and the powerful, professional skills that make students marketable well into the future, no matter how their careers change, the world changes, or they change.” Bellevue University offers more than 50 career-relevant degrees in
business, healthcare, communication, security management, information technology, and more - all online. Finish college with a degree, not burdensome debt BY MANDIE MAYO
“I don’t want to spend life after college forever paying my student loan debt,” said Luz Moreno, a senior at North High in Sioux City. “I have big dreams. Someday I would like to build a hospital in Mexico or Africa or somewhere where I can serve the underserved,” said Moreno. “I want my hospital to provide free health care.” To achieve her dream, Moreno can’t be focused on paying an excessive amount of college debt. So, one of the most important factors in her college search has been affordability. The first step in making college affordable is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. Moreno took advantage of the earlier application deadline last fall – a wise decision since the FAFSA is critical to determining student eligibility for financial aid. The second step is obviously applying to college – or in most cases – apply-

ing to multiple colleges or universities. After applying to three schools, Briar Cliff stood out to Moreno as the obvious choice. “Briar Cliff’s financial aid award letter was so easy to read,” said Moreno. “Actually, the whole process with Briar Cliff was easy. I had fun filling out the application. I just had to go through and
Pell and Iowa Tuition Grant cover all of Moreno’s college tuition. To Moreno, this proved Briar Cliff University’s commitment to helping her attend school affordably. “I don’t want to be so in debt that I have to survive on Ramen after college,” she joked. With no tuition debt, Moreno should be able to put that fear aside. Instead, she can focus on making that dream of opening a hospital a future reality. Moreno is committed to attend Briar Cliff this fall. She plans to major in nursing, biology or biochemistry. Aside from affordability, Moreno is looking forward to a few other things. “I love the tunnels,” she exclaimed. A favorite feature of many college students, the tunnels make wearing shorts to class a year-round option. “I also appreciate the diversity of the students, the idea that small classes will make it easier to make friends and overall, I am just excited for the new experiences that college will offer,” she added.

And, I could just forward on a link to request letters of reference.” Having an intuitive application is no accident. Briar Cliff officials recognize that choosing the right school can be daunting enough. The application process shouldn’t be an added frustration. Moreno had a lot to figure out on her own. She admits she was a bit scared when she began the college search process. She’s a first-generation college student and her older sister went through this process about 10 years ago. A lot has changed since then. With the help of her Briar Cliff admissions representative and a little research, Moreno managed the process very well. Her financial aid award is proof of that. “I received the St. Clare scholarship from Briar Cliff,” she said proudly. This scholarship combined with the

Living on campus during college can cost as much as $10,000 per year or more. If your student lives at home, that money can go toward tuition and fees.

is so nice. You see people holding doors for each other. The people in the cafeteria tell you to have a nice day. It makes you feel welcome. I feel like if I would have gone to a big school, everybody’s head would be down.” GREAT AG PROFESSORS “They know everyone. They know where you’re from. And if you’re from Iowa, they pretty much know all of your high school teachers. When you’re in high school and you think about professors, you think of these scary people who won’t talk to you outside of class, but these guys are just – they’re funny. They’re really laid back. That’s something I really like because you can talk to them about anything.”
Nate Crnkovich
Senior, Nursing Major Omaha, Neb. After exploring his options at Morningside, Nate decided he wants to start his nursing career in an emergency room in Omaha. He’s definitely got a foot in the door. His last semester at Morningside, he is completing a 100-hour preceptorship in the emergency department at Omaha’s Creighton University Medical Center. Once he gets some experience, he wants to do travel nursing. A SMALL CAMPUS OFFERING BIG SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES “Morningside is in a decently large city, so there are a lot of opportunities, especially for nursing. There are two really good hospitals for clinicals. We’ve also been to other places. We’ve been to Midwest Dialysis. We’ve been to urgent care facilities. They try to make sure that you’re exposed to everything, which is awesome.” PROFESSORS WHO REALLY CARE ABOUT YOU “They really want you to find the area where you want to work. There are so many different areas in nursing, whether it’s pediatrics, obstetrics or the emergency room. They’re great with helping you fig-
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES “I’m a member of the Ag Club. This past year, I served as the treasurer. We held an event called Feed the Farmer. We prepared meals and took them to the local grain elevator. We offered the truck drivers in line a meal, and they accepted them graciously, as sometimes they had a long wait to unload their trailers.”
ure out what those options are. They always have time to meet with you. Just email them or text them. They’re great about being a friend almost, helping you figure out what you want to do.” GREAT PREPARATION FOR THE NCLEX NURSE LICENSING EXAM “Our professors have a lot of experience in the nursing field, so they understand what it takes to become a good nurse and what it takes to pass your NCLEX once you get to that point. The small class sizes also help. You can get a little bit more focused, individualized attention. We’re really lucky for a small school to have as qualified and as good of professors made it to the national championship game. The as we do.” coaches are great. EXTERNSHIPS “Professors spend a lot of time getting to know you so they can find the perfect externship for you. You take a semester where you’re not on campus and you go out into the real world, work for a company and gain that knowledge of working for a company while still getting credit for school. You get paid, and a lot of externships lead to job opportunities.” Schedule a visit and see for yourself the many sides of Morningside College. Call 800-831-0806 or visit www.morningside.edu.
