This month we celebrate literacy in a very special way. Kid Scoop News Siouxland feature reporters interviewed three local and national celebrities to find out more about the colorful genres of literacy known as comics, cartoons, and plays. There are so many benefits to enhancing classroom literacy through these genres, that we hope that you gain a little more insight to them into them in this issue. Comics are more than just an art-enrichment activity. They provide narrative experiences and actually can assist our students who are second language learners. There are plots, characters, time and setting as well as sequencing that often do not need the traditional decoding skills. The art provides some wonderful context clues to meaning and they actually are more manageable for many beginning readers. According to Janette (Combs) Kennedy MA Ed., College of William and Mary, there are several key benefits for using comics in the classroom and those benefits are no different than using many traditional methods. The reluctant readers may find a “friend” in the escapes and dialogue of a comic book hero or heroine. While most people find it important to limit the amount of time spent watching TV, most children do watch a few cartoons a day. From our own experience, we know that even babies will mimic facial expressions and feelings seen in cartoon characters. The bright and varied colors attract their viewing, and early language skills can be enhanced depending on the type of cartoon that is being watched. Many of the current cartoons require quite a bit of intelligence to understand the humor and the plot. Popular culture is all around us, and children tend to be up on current trends in language. In a television cartoon you can learn about real places and real people, you can also let your imagination bring everyday life to the screen in a wonderfully animated way. Laughter is good for the soul and cartoons, especially goofy ones, make us laugh. When we watch television cartoons as a family, we are experiencing a shared moment, and as children get older, those moments seem to be fewer and fewer. There is literally nothing like a live performance, and children who attend plays or are performing on stage themselves, gain a great deal of literary knowledge and background about the classics, the literary elements, and themselves. Plays enhance literacy knowledge, tolerance, and empathy among children. They teach children to better understand historical, political and personal events through the live interaction from the stage. It’s no wonder that many districts are placing the arts a high priority in the curriculum and a movement back to art education, music education and theatre can be seen in schools across the nation. A huge thank you to the individuals who agreed to be interviewed this month; Kyle Carrozza, and Kevin McGarry. You matter a great deal to our readers and you impressed our student reporters with your genuine interest and support of what they are doing. Mentors, or “Sensei” as one reporter mentioned, are one of the most important roles an individual can have and we send our appreciation to all of you involved in the arts, in any way…you are heroes in the eyes of our youth.

3 CRAZY HORSE
This is a great month to tell people thank you. And a really special way to thank someone is by sending a hand-written thank you note. Find some nice paper and an envelope so you
can write and decorate a note to thank someone special. Then, get a stamp and mail it, or hand deliver the note. You will be amazed at how much your act of gratitude means! Thanksgiving is celebrated this month as well as Veterans Day, the day we honor the veterans who have served to keep our country safe. A great way to celebrate both of these holidays is to send a veteran a Thank You card.
Take a special thank you note, or a homemade craft or goodie to a nearby Veteran’s hospital or Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW) post to show your appreciation for their service. And if you have a family member currently serving in the military, be sure to send a note of love and thanks to them, too! I hope you enjoy this month’s Kid Scoop News! I sure enjoyed working on it for you. And, thank you again, for being a reader!
Brrrrr! Cold weather is coming! Color these mittens using crayons or markers. Mail your artwork to us at the address below and we’ll publish as many as we can in our next issue of Kid Scoop News! Be creative! Send your finished artwork to:

There you are looking at the really cool and neat Crazy Horse. I think it is really cool and you should visit it if you get the chance. Crazy horse is crazy big; it is the 27th tallest mountain in all of South Dakota. The mountain was chosen by the sculptor and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear for the memorial. The sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, began Crazy Horse but sadly he died in 1982 on October 20th. He has been dead for 34 years and they are still working on it, and his children are doing a lot of it. Crazy Horse is 6,532 feet tall; that is amazingly tall! It is a very amazing sight, and I hope you see it. They are supposed to get done in the next 15 to 20 years. But that might not happen because the government doesn’t fund this monument. That is kind of sad because it is cool just like Mount Rushmore. If completed, Crazy Horse will be the world’s largest sculpture. It honors a leader of the Oglala Lakota people from the region. Crazy Horse, an Indian Chief, fought a Great War in the 1870s, and fought against the white people for their land, and they won. The Native Americans fought on the Black Hills. The Black Hills are the ground of the Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore. More about the person Crazy Horse, they say he was one of the greatest Native American leaders of all time; that is an astonishing title to have. Crazy Horse died on September 5, 1877. I couldn’t find when he was born, but he was born in Rapid City. Crazy Horse fought in the battle against the whites called Little Bighorn. The whites harassed the Native Americans and the Natives had enough if it; they were angry at the government because their land and way of life were threatened. Keegan Flanigan Mater Dei Grade 7

EUREKA, Calif. – The folks at Sequoia Park Zoo think he is world’s largest bovine. Read the article on this page. Then answer the questions below!
Danniel is a gentle giant. This very big Holstein steer loves hay and bread. He will come to you when his name is called.
Who is this article about?
Danniel seems to like people better than other animals according to Amanda Auston, the zoo’s animal care supervisor.
What is this article about?
Taking care of Danniel is a BIG job. He eats about 50 pounds a hay everyday and produces up to 150 pounds of dung a day!
for the official measuring. After a short detour to smell the barnyard flowers, he was measured at 6 feet 4 inches from hoof to withers (the highest part of a steer’s back), watched by the barnyard resident goats and sheep.
Danniel was born on a farm in Humboldt County in Northern California. He was bottle-raised by his human family, the Farleys. When Danniel kept growing and growing so big that he needed more space, they decided he should have a new home.
So, he came to Sequoia Park Zoo for the summer where he has made some new friends and a lot of fans!
Will Danniel be a recordbreaking steer? We’ll have to wait and see. But even if he doesn’t set a new world record, he’s a pretty big deal!
Danniel was recently measured by the zoo vet, Dr. Kevin Silver, to see if he is the tallest steer in the world. If he is, his name will go into the Guinness Book of World Records! To be measured, Danniel was lured from his paddock to the barnyard with hay to stand on a flat concrete area—a requirement To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

The Food Detectives: Lawton-Bronson Second Graders Remember last month when we shared that the Lawton-Bronson first grade Food Detectives from last year were now Food Detectives from second grade? Well, these students will be sharing more information each month about a healthy lifestyle, healthy food choices and general ag-related (agriculture related) themes. We know that rural students have a strong understanding of farm to table products, and now, through these students’ experiences, we are learning more! While learning about animals in science, the second graders became Food Detectives as they learned more about honey bees. The detectives began by listening to the book The Honeybee Man by Lela Nargi. Every morning Fred climbs three flights of stairs in his apartment in Brooklyn, New York. He reaches the roof and greets his family of bees by saying, “Good morning, my bees, my darlings!” Through the story, readers are able to learn more about honey bees. Some of the jobs done by honey bees include: tending to the hive, feeding the babies, making wax rooms and foraging the flowers for nectar. Readers also learn the job of a beekeeper and the honey-making process. While learning about honey bees, the Food Detectives also were able to sample honey! The honey was creamed honey and at first the Food Detectives thought that they were going to sample frosting! The detectives were surprised that they were actually going to sample honey! The honey came from Wild Hill Honey, which is sold locally. The
detectives learned that beekeeper Justin wears no protective gear when harvesting his combs. His honeybees stay within 2 miles of the hive. He has 4 million bees! He calls his honey liquid gold. Honeybees live 42 days and a single bee produces only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime! The detectives were asked to write about honey. Here are some of their stories: Carter wrote, “The creamy honey tasted like frosting and sticky like candy. And with a cracker, the cracker was crunchy and it was delicious. It was so sticky my hands stuck together. And it tasted so sweet like candy. It tasted so good when I tasted it.” Josie shared, “The wild honey was delicious! It was really, really, really, really delicious. It was like sugary honey. It was just the best honey I have ever tasted. I love every single kind of bee in the world.” Noah said, “I know that the bees that make the honey do the most work and the one gets the nectar and the most work. The dads have to feed the babies. Some people take the honey and some bears take their honey. You can put it on crackers. It tastes good to eat. My teacher read a book of honey. It was good. My first grade teacher read it to me. We got to have crackers and honey too. I liked it. It was really good. The honey made the crackers stick to my teeth, but it was good.” The Food Detectives will next be sampling and learning about caramel apples. These caramel apples are only sold in Carroll and Denison. The caramel apples have been sold since 1938! The same recipe, copper kettle, gas stove, candy thermometer, marble table and wooden spoon are still being used today! Be on the lookout for any food adventures that you can take! They are all around you!

Gardens have been cleaned up at Spalding and Riverside. The Riverside school and community garden was tilled on Monday, October 24th…right before the rain thanks to Larry! They harvested, in Riverside, over 1800 pounds of veggies! Two worm bins have been started in the Spalding third grade classrooms…we are going to have to catch up with those students to find out a little more about worm bins. Even the name sounds intriguing. Wildflower seeds were also planted thanks to the Home Depot for this donation! Susan Leonard helped with the planting and the grounds will be beautiful and so appropriate for these Loess Hills! Cover crop seeds from Albert Lea Seeds were delivered in late October and will be planted at Spalding Park Elementary , Unity Elementary , Loess Hills Elementary and the Riverside Elementary Schools. Kid Scoop News Siouxland is positively amazed and proud of our regional schools for their long term commitment to healthy lifestyles. Students who learn about their environments in a “hand on, minds on” way, learn for a lifetime. Kudos to this community endeavor! Report from Laurie Taylor, Master Gardner and Volunteer

Fall Thoughts The mother of the world, Mother Nature… opens the fall gate with her special set of keys. I can hear the autumn leaves falling from the trees, I feel the weather getting cold. We used to play in the leafpiles… but now we are too old. The leaves are changing into colors of yellow, orange, and red, Soon to come, Will be icy winds that we dread. Leaving a strong sharp smell that will never end! The creek will freeze around the bend. I ran so fast in the snow it began to hurt my lungs. The snow will fall and we’ll catch snowflakes on our tongues. Like we did way back when, Until the leaves turn green once again. Laura Murray When you rake up leaves, because it is your chore, do you jump into them and notice all different colors? Have you ever wondered why they turn that color? I know that I have! Well, I just figured out why they do that! When the chlorophyll in the leaves break down it makes the green color in the leaves change to To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

yellow, then to orange, then red, and eventually brown and crumbly. Chlorophyll is a green part of the plant cell that helps create photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a cycle that plants use to make energy. When the chlorophyll breaks down the leaves can’t perform photosynthesis to stay alive so they die. Then they get darker and darker. So next time you rake up leaves, compare the colors and try to figure out which ones are older and which ones are younger. Ask your parents if they know. I asked my mom and she had no idea. So if you ever wonder why some leaves change from one color to another, this is why. Taylor Jochum Mater Dei Grade 7 Don’t you just love fall? It’s awesome! Fall is my favorite season! The leaves change colors and fall off the trees. I also love playing in the leaves, hot chocolate, nice weather, and Halloween comes around. It is the best thing ever! I am going to educate you about how leaves, foliage that fall from trees, turn colors. Chlorophyll is the product that makes leaves turn green in the summer. In the fall, the chlorophyll breaks down. When the chlorophyll breaks down it sends nutrients into the tree and leaf stems. The breaking down causes the leaves to turn red and yellow. The tree moves starches and nitrogen from the broken down chlorophyll. That causes the other colors to show. Then the tree adjusts its hormone levels, and causes the leaves to fall to the ground. I hope you learned a lot about the changing color of leaves! Hannah Fitzpatrick Mater Dei Grade 7 www.NIESiouxland.com

How do you know when it is fall, when October comes? I do! It’s when the leaves change colors! Some of the colors can be red, orange, and yellow. I love this time of year, just before all the leaves come off the trees and before winter starts. One thing I look forward to is Thanksgiving. It’s so fun to go outside because it’s not too hot. Also, in my opinion, this is the best time to have a picnic! Gather your friends/family and go out to Bacon Creek, the best park in town! They have beautiful scenery, a pond, and if you like to work out or just enjoy the walk there is a three mile long walking trail. While walking you can see all the colorful leaves and have a great time, enjoy! Joe Adams Mater Dei Grade 8

8 Restaurant Reviews and Coffee Shoppes…. and a Little Food for Thought! When I walk into Johnny Mars, the smell of food and coffee make my mouth water. We go sit down and then we order; I get hot chocolate and the anticipation is crazy as I just can’t wait for it. Then when it finally comes, I have to wait for it to cool down but then when it does. I drink it. I feel the warmth of it in the winter it makes me feel warm and cozy. I love Johnny Mars; it is the best place to go in the winter with my grandparents and my family. It is a great atmosphere to be in. They treat you so nicely, like everyone is family. Jayden Pelster Mater Dei Grade 7 It’s a cold winter day as you step inside Johnny Mars. The snow outside is coming down, and the smell of coffee greets you as you stomp some of the snow off your boots. The sound of food sizzling and people talking fills your ears. You see people sitting at tables with steaming cups in their hands. Small children are sitting in high chairs as their parents and grandparents cut up food to put on their plates. A waitress leads you to a booth, hands you a menu and asks you what you want to drink. You noticed people drinking coffee or hot chocolate next to you, and you were still cold from the snow outside. “Hot chocolate, please,” you told her. While the waitress went to get your drink, you looked around some more. The walls were a pale green, decorated with roosters of every kind, from plates to wall hangings to paintings. The atmosphere was warm and
welcoming, and your mood seemed to lift. “Here you go,” the waitress says, putting your

Have you ever been to Pierce Street Coffee Works? I have, and I love it! When you walk in you can smell the food and coffee right away. The environment is great and so is all the food. My favorite foods to get there are the grilled cheese and the Moon Unit sandwiches. The coffee there is great too, as you would think, because its right there in the name. I like it and I’m not even much of a coffee person. If you aren’t a coffee person either, don’t worry there are tons of other drink options like fruit smoothies and tea. I love the chai tea there, it’s very good. I love this restaurant and I suggest you try it. Lily Graham Mater Dei Grade 7 Have you ever had coffee from Jitters? Well, I have and its some of the best coffee in the world. Jitters is a hometown coffee shop in Sioux City. The first time I was there was about two years ago and I was fascinated by the taste of the doughnuts and coffee. As you walk in, you can smell the baking of the doughnuts and the brewing of the coffee. You see busy workers rushing to tables and taking people’s orders. Jitters has the best doughnuts in Sioux City and they may be the best doughnuts in the whole country. Connor Bos Mater Dei Grade 8 Have you ever had an iced vanilla bean frappuccino? It’s really good; it’s like having vanilla ice cream but creamier! I usually get it at Starbucks; sometimes I get it when I leave school on the way home. When you first take a sip, the best taste fills your taste buds. You can find Starbucks all over the place, it’s a chain restaurant. There are different types of vanilla bean but I like frappuccino. Joe Adams Mater Dei Grade 8 Imagine walking into Starbucks on a cold fall day. As you walk in the doors, you immediately smell the delicious coffee and desserts. My favorite coffee shop is Panera Bread and my favorite warm drink from there is their delicious hot cocoa because coffee isn’t really my thing! On freezing winter days I love going there and relaxing with my refreshing cup of hot cocoa in front of the warm fireplace. What’s your favorite coffee shop? The Pierce Street Coffee Shoppe/Coffee Works is the place to go with your studies. The sandwich and pastry selections are super. Whether you want a latte, a hot chocolate, or chai tea…this is the place to go. When you are there, you can stop by the Sioux City Gift Shoppe, too. Pierce Street near 18th is one interesting block to find in Sioux City! The feeling of hot chocolate as it runs down your throat on a really cold day brings a really warm feeling. During hunting season for deer, my dad and I get up really early and get the truck loaded with our guns and a backpack full of supplies that we will need to hunt for deer. We also bring food that doesn’t smell, to make sure the deer don’t smell it and run away. We will bring items like apples, water, and hot chocolate to warm us up. Then we leave the house and go to our hunting spot. Once we get there, we get everything out of the truck and on our backs, and then we head down as quietly as possible to the blind. Once we get there we get everything situated. I sit on my chair and eat my breakfast and drink the hot chocolate that warms my whole body up because it’s always so cold outside. Hot chocolate is always a really warming drink to have when it’s cold out. Many plants stop making food in the fall. When they stop making food, the green color in their leaves starts to disappear. Plants make their own food using these ingredients:

Funny You Should Ask!
When the rain comes down, what goes up? Find the answer in the fall leaf border! Start with the letter in the triangle. Then read every other letter as you move along the border.
Trees take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide from the air. They use the sunlight and something called chlorophyll (clor-oh-fill) to turn water and carbon dioxide into food. Chlorophyll is green. It gives leaves their green color.

Red leaves are another story. This color is made in the fall, from food trapped in the leaves.

When winter days get short and there is less sunlight, the leaf makes less chlorophyll. Then we can see orange and yellow colors. These colors were in the leaves all summer, but the green covered them up.
Standards Link: Life Science: Plants have structures that serve different functions in survival; plants use carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build sugar and release oxygen.

Thanksgiving is a Time for Family… Every year on Thanksgiving, I go to my grandma’s house with the family, the best family ever. Every Thanksgiving our family tries to bake a turkey that we have shot. Some years we get one, some years we don’t. When all my cousins get there, I play with them. We always have a ping pong tournament, singles and doubles. It’s always my cousin Will and I in the championship game; so it’s a lot of fun. After relaxing, we go upstairs and eat our Thanksgiving food. Everyone is around a big table, my aunts, uncles, cousins, my mom, dad, grandma and grandpa. We start at one side of the table and pass the turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries, bread and butter, snicker doodle salad, corn and a lot more. The food is always delicious. After we get done eating, we go outside and play two- hand touch football, it is a lot of fun. Then…and it is no surprise, we go inside and the boys sit down and watch the football games that are on. That’s why Thanksgiving is so much fun! I hope yours is just as fun. Bryce Harper Mater Dei Grade 8 It was Thanksgiving Day, the day we sit down and give thanks for what we have, and I was excited to spend the day with my family. It was in the morning so I watched television, and played some video games. But when the afternoon arrived, my mom and I were supposed to start making Thanksgiving dinner. I went to wake her up. She was tired, but she did get up. I tried to wake up my brother, but he was sleeping like a bear. I poked my brother; to see if he was still alive. He just groaned and readjusted himself on his bed. Later, my mother and I went to the store to buy the food for dinner. After that, we went home to make dinner. I worked on the mashed potatoes while my mother To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328
cooked the turkey, and the ham. After everything was done cooking, at 5:00 p.m., my dad came back from work. He got cleaned up and woke up my brother for dinner. We sat down, prayed, gave thanks, and dug into the delicious, tasty looking Thanksgiving dinner. Noah Zeisler Mater Dei Grade 8 Thanksgiving is the one time of the year that you get to eat and give thanks at the same time. I love Thanksgiving because I get to stuff my face with food and be around my family. (Also, we get to be out of school!) I mean what could sound better than stuffing your face with food, being around your family, and also getting out of school? What could be better than that? My Grandma, the best cook in the world, makes the best everything. I mean she cooks for at least an army, but we seem to eat it all. A way of giving thanks is appreciating what you have. It might seem like you do, but as humans we often take everything for granted. It’s as simple as a small paperclip; you might have gotten that paperclip, lost it, and assumed that you will always get another because you take it for granted. So this Thanksgiving, appreciate what you have…and don’t take things for granted. Madilyn Cramer Mater Dei Grade 7 Just picture it, it’s Thanksgiving morning and you wake up to decorations, a warm fire, and relatives coming in from other states. That is how my family’ s Thanksgiving starts out. Next, my mom, grandma and aunts start to cook. The smell of cooking turkey and pie is so mouthwatering and fantastic! The foods that we eat at Thanksgiving are the usual things like: turkey, ham, stuffing, vegetables, and desserts. We also eat unusual things like raw shrimp, macaroni with corn mixed in, (my favorite dish), and shrimp scampi. On Thanksgiving we have a lot of family traditions like breaking the turkey’s wishbone. My family takes turn www.NIESiouxland.com
doing it, but when I do it, I usually win! Another tradition is to watch football and the Macy Day Parade which is really fun. The last tradition is to play street football. Usually the kids and our dads just play on a street next to my house where cars rarely go on. It is always fun to play! Once every one gets back, we all are really tired, but the moms are getting ready to go Black Friday shopping. That is how my fabulous Thanksgiving goes and I hope you have a fantastic Thanksgiving too! Bailey Logan Mater Dei Grade 7 The smell of turkey filled the entire house! When the smell reached my nose, I knew it was time for a special meal. I galloped up the carpeted staircase and heard the sound of delighted voices. I reached the kitchen and saw a huge meal. There was turkey, mashed potatoes, Jell-o, and salad. There was even pizza for the little kids! I saw my friends and family all together and ready to eat. They were chatting about all sorts of topics, and the little kids were playing together. I sat down with my family with my plate. I loved eating with my family. It’s even better when you’re with friends. It’s even BETTER when my mom, the best cook ever, is the one cooking the food. All the food tasted absolutely delicious! Everyone enjoyed every bite of that meal. I really love Thanksgiving dinner! Ricky Arteaga Mater Dei Grade 7 Thanksgiving may be one of the best holidays! It may be the best because you get to indulge in all the wonderful foods you can eat without anyone judging you! I love Thanksgiving because all my family comes to town and gathers around the table as one big family. I also like playing football in the backyard, even though I might not be that good, with my cousins. But if it’s too chilly outside we also like to curl up on the couch and watch football on TV. Do you love Thanksgiving? I do. A family tradition that I do is go to my grandma’s house. I love when I walk into her home, a warm, loving place, and smell all the delicious food that makes my mouth water. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and it is coming up. After I get to my grandma’s I go to the kitchen and help her set the table and finish making the food. The sight of the food is amazing; it makes my stomach growl. When the family comes together for a Thanksgiving dinner, it offers a great time to share family history and stories. Pass out question cards to the kids and let them interview their elders. Here are some sample questions:
Reading is simply magical. Our alphabet has only 26 letters, but when you put these letters together to form words and sentences, you get the script for Minions, the poetry of Shakespeare and the power of Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech. Kids who read more, read better and do better in school. Here are some tips for making reading a magical time in your home:
Read Everywhere: Words are all around us. Point out words on signs, labels, cereal boxes — anywhere! Look for words and read them out loud together.
Play Games with Words: See who is fastest at coming up with with three words that rhyme.
Mix Words Up: Write down the name of a famous person, such as George Lucas. With your child, rearrange the letters in the name to make new words.

Mr. and Mrs. Moose invite all their animal friends for Thanksgiving dinner and the only one missing is Turkey. When they set out to find him, Turkey is quaking with fear because he doesn't realize that his hosts want him at their table, not on it.
In brilliant collage illustrations, Caldecott Honor artist Melissa Sweet tells the story of the puppeteer Tony Sarg, capturing his genius, his dedication, his zest for play, and his long-lasting gift to America — the inspired helium balloons that would become the trademark of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

A wonderful festival held Sunday, September 18th was a day to celebrate the monarch’s migration from Canada through Iowa, to their final destination in Mexico. The festival was at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. Events included: a Bug Parade, monarch tagging, a puppet show, performances by Mexican dance group Los Ninos del Tepeyac and lots of activities. My journey to Des Moines began early in the morning. It was a bright, sunny day with highs expected in the 90’s. A perfect flying day for our migrating monarchs! About half an hour later, I began to see monarchs who were either beginning or continuing their journey south. As I continued on I-80, I kept seeing more monarchs. I held my breath each time one would near a semi. Fly high butterfly, I thought, because a butterfly doesn’t stand a chance if they are hit by a moving vehicle. Once I arrived at the Blank Park Zoo, I met Missy, Joe and their two daughters Kenzie and Mia. Missy and Joe are my niece and nephew. Kenzie and Mia were so excited to be attending the Monarch Festival and had dressed up for the Bug Parade! Kenzie had transformed into a ladybug and Mia was a beautiful butterfly! I shared with Kenzie that I was glad that she was dressed as a helpful bug for the monarchs! We bought tickets are were ready to go! Next on our agenda was going to the monarch puppet show. The kids in attendance were invited to participate by holding a puppet and performing the action. As our storyteller began, our monarch was in Des Moines and was migrating to Mexico. Through her story, we learned many facts about the monarch butterfly: In Mexico, one tree can hold 2,000 butterflies! There is no milkweed in Mexico. The butterflies migrate to the fir trees. A monarch weighs less than a dollar bill. The monarchs were named for King William, Prince of Orange. The early settlers were impressed by the butterflies’ bright color and decided to name them monarchs in honor of King William. Golden rod is one of their favorite nectar plants. We spent time at the Iowa State University’s booth. We were able to see all the stages of the monarch…egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and the butterfly! Kenzie and Mia were able to choose a caterpillar to take home with them. Kenzie named the butterfly Barbie! To learn more about the Iowa Monarch Conservation Consortium, go to monarch.ent.iastate.edu Our last monarch adventure was catching butterflies and getting to tag them. Joe was a pro and was able to net two monarchs. One had an injured wing and wasn’t tagged. We were told that because of his wing being damaged, he would not make it to Mexico. The second monarch had already been tagged. Kenzie shared that her favorite part of the day was being able to take home a caterpillar. Mia liked the puppet show and getting to see the praying mantis. Missy shared that when the girls got home, they found fresh milkweed for Barbie. As soon as they got home from school, they’d check Barbie and spend time watching her. They were amazed at how much she ate! Missy shared, “Unfortunately Barbie did not survive. I’m not sure what happened. She was eating a lot and the girls loved watching her. The girls were pretty disappointed. We will have to try again next year as it definitely piqued their interest. We saw lots of monarchs for a couple of weeks after going to the zoo. The girls were really paying attention to them.” As I journeyed home, I reflected on what a great day it was! I was able to spend time with my family, learn more about monarchs and enjoy all of the zoo animals! I’m making plans to return for next year’s festival! SAVING UP TOWARDS SOMETHING SPECIAL Saving up towards something special can always be a challenge. Especially if the item you are saving for costs a lot of money. It takes time, determination, and patience to achieve this goal. Sometimes the goal is small like a video game. Other times the goal is very lofty like a new gaming console or a new puppy! Whether the goal is big or small, it is still a task that requires planning, organization, and a strong desire to achieve. Having a savings account or a special (safe) place to set your extra money aside is the first step in succeeding with this goal. There are many ways to save towards your goal, but to earn money it takes a lot of hard work and determination. There are many ways to earn money. A part time job is a great way to earn extra cash, but for some of you this may not be an option because of school obligations or age restrictions. If this is not an option then talk to your parents about doing extra chores around the house! Each time you get paid from your job or from your parents take a portion of that money and set it aside. Every little bit helps get you closer to you goal! Keep track of your progress too! Seeing the amount grow over time is a great motivator to keep on going. With that in mind I want to give you a challenge! Think about something that you have always wanted for yourself. Once you have decided what this item is determine the cost involved in obtaining this item. How much do you need to save up to purchase this item? After you have determined the item and the cost involved, the next step is to think of how long you want to take to save up for this item. Based on how long you are willing to work towards achieving this goal you will be able to figure out just how much you need to save each week to get there. I’ll give you an example. Goal: Xbox One. Cost: $350 Timeframe: 3 months (12 weeks) Amount to save each week: $30 Based on my goal setting, if I set aside $30 every week for 12 weeks I will achieve my goal and reward myself by purchasing a new Xbox One. Now it’s your turn! What is your goal?

Welcome back to our young artists’ page. Each month, during the school year, we highlight some of the region’s up and coming young visual artists. Art teachers throughout Siouxland and beyond share ideas, lessons and artwork designed by students from the elementary and middle schools. Poppin’ Bottles n’ Brushes is a locally-owned art instruction boutique located in the Indian Hills Shopping Center. The boutique offers painting classes for all ages and all skill levels. Private painting parties, team building events, pallet painting parties, and wood art are only a few of the experiences that can be shared at Poppin’ Bottles n’ Brushes. Guests are guided through painting step-by-step and taught the basic fundamentals with heavy-body acrylics on canvas. Painting events may be hosted at local restaurants, businesses and the studio throughout the week. Poppin’Bottles n’ Brushes is now a proud sponsor of literacy through the Kid Scoop News Siouxland connection. Each month, art teachers from throughout Siouxland may send in student work for publication. Two students’ names will be drawn each month and those students will receive gift certificates for a two-person session at Poppin’ Bottles n’ Brushes. Kid Scoop News Siouxland is excited about this new monthly art section. All regional art teachers are encouraged to e-mail photos of three-four art pieces each month. Please include a brief description of the art concepts being taught as shown in the artwork. We believe in all fine arts’ connections!

AERODYNAMICS IN FOOTBALL SPIN TO WIN
he quarterback takes the snap and gets ready to
When the football spins around the x-axis - or horizontal axis - it keeps the ball on its intended path.
throw the prolate
spheroid to the open receiver downfield and …
Wait. What? That strange football shape is called called a prolate spheroid. That shape lets football players put a spin on the ball when they throw it or kick it. This spin creates air flow over the ball while it travels. That matters because gravity is always trying to pull the ball down to the ground.
A LIFT? NEED The word aerodynamics
Hey, gravity! Just whose side are you on, anyway?
comes from two Greek words: (meaning ‘of the air’) and
(power, strength, force) Scientists use aerodynamics to make things go fast and far – like cars, jet planes and footballs. The weight of an object makes it harder to lift. But knowing about aerodynamics keeps a 300,000 pound plane in the air!
This spinning around the x-axis is called a gyroscopic effect.
Quarterbacks grip the ball in different ways to create spin. And spin is how they get more lift on the ball. Air traveling above the ball is forced downward by the spin and the air below creates lift.

Tackling Math
There are six teams in the STEM Football League. They have played three games so far this season.
Calculate each teams’ average number of points for the first three games: AERODYNAMICS: ENERGIZERS: REACTORS: NEWTONIANS: CALCULATORS: SPHEROIDS: Rank the teams in order based on the number of games they won. (If two teams have the same record, list the team that has scored more total points higher.) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
There is no question that Kid Scoop News’ readers absolutely love fall sports…no, wait, they absolutely love all sports! You eat cereal, and then you brush your teeth. Then you put your pants and shoulder pads on. Then you put your jersey on. Then you drive to the game. Then you start to stretch out. Then go to the middle of the field and flip a coin. If you differ you get the ball at half time. Then one team kicks it off. Then someone returns the kick. If you can’t get a first down (10 yards) in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd down, you punt it or go for it. Finally, after the game, you shake the other team members’ hands. Then you get in a meeting with your catches and teammates and talk about the game. Dylan B. and Hunter K. Perry Creek Mr. Boeve’s Class from Perry Creek Football is fun to play. You will need 22 players. The goal of the game is to have fun, but you could get an injury, too, in tackle football. There are many football player positions on offense and defense and many plays.
If you don’t know how the points work, a team gets six points for a touchdown and one point for extra point. Gabe Perry Creek Grade 5 Today I’m going to talk about football. Football is a noble profession. How to play: first kick the football. Nex, try to throw it to your teammates in to make a touchdown. Finally, if you have the highest score you win. The last time I saw football was with my friend Micah, a young kid who likes football. Simon Perry Creek Grade 5 Football is fun to play. There are lots of good teams. My favorite teams are Arizona and Carolina Panthers. Carolina is not doing well because they have won only one game and they have lost three times. Arizona is doing better than the Panthers. I like the Cardinals because my grandma lives there and we visit every summer. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona in a nice neighborhood. George Perry Creek Grade 5 Have you ever played the game football? to have a lot of focus, and you have to know what you’re doing. I also play outside linebacker and my team does 4 defensive linemen and 4 linebackers. So you can’t let anyone outside you and you’re supposed to contain. My favorite football teams are the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Denver Broncos. Nebraska is doing really well this year and the Broncos not so great. I like to play football with my friends. I play for Westside and we’re doing okay. My number is 34 are colors are green, white, and black. Our helmets are white with a green paw. Jackson
Have you ever played football? Well if not, I suggest giving it a try. Football is a contact sport. It makes your adrenalin start pumping. My favorite part is when our team makes a really good play. I play for Heelan middle school, a pretty good team, but we only have 21 kids on our team. I play wide receiver and corner back. I like corner way more. I play corner more than receiver. At corner back you usually block the wide receiver. You can’t let anyone outside of you. The main job for a corner is to contain the outside. Anthony Courey Mater Dei Grade 7

I could hear the loud cheers of the crowd on both sides of me as I was running towards the finish line. In the crowd was Mr. Hinds, our cross country coach, yelling “Come on! You can do it! You are almost there!” I could smell the freshly cut grass as I ran faster. I looked ahead. There it was…the finish line! I immediately took a drink from my water bottle. I felt the cold water rush down my dry throat. The water tasted cold and refreshing. My team and I met up and congratulated each other. Cross country takes a lot of hard work and dedication. To get better at running you have to train five days a week or
First you need a ball and somewhere to play. You need at least you and another player. You can juke, and truck. You half to go as fast as you can or they will catch. Cross country is fun when you get good at it. Especially with your friends! Ryelle Stanek Mater Dei Do you like competing and playing with your friends? Well, those are two of many reasons why football is a great sport to play. Football was developed in 1869 when Princeton and Rutgers, two college teams, played the first College football game. Have you ever watched football? Well, it is definitely as fun as it looks. Football takes a lot of time and commitment because practice may be every day. But, I think that it is very worth it. There are 11 positions on the football field and one of them is the quarterback, and that’s what I play. The quarterback runs the offense. They need to know what everyone is doing to do the play right. I like being the quarterback because I like running and throwing. Luke Longval It is fall! That means it is football season! This year is going to be great. My teams
are dominant. This year my favorite college football team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, are going to rule. So far this season they are undefeated. They are now the 8th best team in the country. They have a tough schedule, but they can pull through. They already beat Oregon, a really good team. I hope Nebraska wins the National Championship in January. On the NFL side, I like two teams the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. So far the Vikings are at 5-1 by winning a huge game at the Panthers. The Giants on the other hand are at 3-3. They started out amazing, but then their defense shut down. Though, a 27-23 win over the Ravens really helped with Odell Beckham Jr. gaining 222 of 441 yards. I love football! Though if you don’t like sports, you could just go for the great food and loud noise. Landen Dill Mater Dei Grade 6 Mrs. Aesop’s Team from Perry Creek Share a Little about Sports My favorite sport is basketball because it is an energy burner and it is good for your health. Ian My favorite sport is track because I like running. There are different medals you
can get. You can get gold, and a lot more. It is lots of fun! Lyncoln My favorite sport is football, because my dad used to play for the Bandits. I like catching the ball. My cousin plays for a college team. Christopher My favorite sport is kayaking because when I started I already knew how. I got my own kayak; my mom has one, too. I go kayaking with her when I go to the lake. Rowan My favorite sport is baseball because I like hitting the baseball. It is really fun. My dad is a good coach. Caydin My favorite sports are hockey and basketball because in hockey you get to skate. Skating makes your legs stronger. I like basketball because you get to wear cool shoes. Evan H. My favorite sport is baseball because we get to practice catching and also hitting the ball. Karsen My favorite sport is football because I get to run the ball. Brandon My favorite sport is basketball because you can be on teams and shoot the ball at the basketball hoop. You get to do exercise with your coach and you can
run. Varian My favorite sport is swimming because it cools you down. I also like soccer because you get to kick the ball and run. Catherine My favorite sport is soccer because I play it every year. I am good at it. I love soccer; we kick the ball and try to score a goal. My dad is my coach. I also like swimming. I do back flips and front flips. I can’t touch the bottom. It is still fun. I like swimming. Makenna My favorite sport is soccer because I could bomb kick it when I am goalie, I can use my hands when I am goalie. Rudy My favorite sport is swimming because I like to dive. I like to swim and I like to splash and play at King’s Point. Carver My favorite sport is basketball because I can dribble the ball, throw the ball, and have fun. Isabella My favorite sport is volleyball because you get to jump and hit the ball… And you get to be with your teammates. Aiyana

HUNT ELEMENTARY WELCOMED IOWA TEACHER OF THE YEAR, SCOTT SLECHTA FROM FAIRFIELD, IOWA On Monday, October 31st (yes, Halloween Day) Hunt Elementary students and staff welcomed the 2016 Iowa Teacher of the Year, Scott Slechta. Mr. Slechta is a 35-year veteran teacher who believes that he knew he wanted to be a teacher when he was in the first grade. He has taught English at Fairfield High School since 1984 and has served in many state leadership roles. According to Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, “Scott Slechta’s commitment to innovation and lifelong learning are an inspiration. His tireless focus on how to be a more effective teacher has served his students extraordinarily well, and is a model for the new teacher leadership system rolling out across Iowa.” Mr. Slechta grew up on an Iowa farm and can recall every teacher he has had, going back to first grade. The Iowa Teacher of the Year award was established in 1958. It is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education through the Iowa Legislature. Mr. Slechta will serve as an ambassador to education throughout the year. To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

It’s a tradition to display blue and gold stars in the homes of families of veterans. A blue star means the veteran in the family is living. A gold star means the veteran died.
efore 1954, Veterans Day was called Armistice Day. The first Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, marked the signing of the peace treaty that ended World War I. (An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting, and it’s made just before the signing of a peace treaty.) More soldiers had died in World War I than in any other war in history. An Australian journalist named George Honey started a practice that became a tradition. He asked people to observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. as the treaty

On November, 11, Veteran’s Day, we celebrate this day for all people in service, all who have been in service, and all who have died in service. For me this includes both of my grandpas, so they are mainly who I think of on Veteran’s Day. On Veteran’s Day, I don’t really do much besides maybe visit my grandpas, even though I think I should do something more. When I go to visit both of my grandpas I usually have lunch with one of them and then dinner with the other. It’s nice to have time with both of them, and to make them feel good about what they have done for our country. I hope you celebrate Veteran’s Day too! Ben Raymond Mater Dei Grade 8

Life is a book, and there are thousands of pages I have yet to read. … Will Herondale Sarah-Marie Jabre and Rachel Bertrand Mater Dei 8th grade The Great Beasts Series is full of adventure; there are around seven books in the main series. The most exciting part of the books is when they go to get these items called talismans. There are Great Beasts which are large versions of regular animals, like Arax the Ram who is huge and in the book it says it’s hooves are the size of dinner plates and his talisman gives you agility. The main part of the book is four friends and they all have spirit animals that are fallen Great Beasts. I really enjoyed this series, and it gave me lots of action and suspense. In the series, the enemy is an army called the Conquerors; they are fearless and there are thousands of them. Then the land of Erdas, the land, kingdoms, and tribes that are against the Conquerors, tries to defeat them. The best army for that is the Greencloaks which is the army the four children belong to. Everyone in the Greencloaks army have spirit animals and their animals give them certain powers. To find out more about the books, read the first one and go on from there. Jacob Salmen Mater Dei Grade 8 This is the best book ever! Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library was a book I just couldn’t put down. It has action and lots of it! A group of kids are invited to spend a night in a brand new library in their city, and they play a wacky and wild game. This is a book of action and thrill. It makes you think, and it’s an awesome mystery book! Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is such a good book, you should read it if you want a real page-turner! It is like a modern version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. You may even see some of your favorite books and authors mentioned in the book. It has a snobby rich boy in it, and you will love reading about him! The settings have such detail; I think it would be so cool if this library was a real place. If you want a good book, read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library! Brooklynn Roder Mater Dei Grade 6

KINDER KIDS
Texas Kinders Loved Halloween and their Firefighters!
31
Our Texas kinders just plain love fall as in Texas it gets just a tiny bit cooler, though they don’t really wear jackets until late November and December….In October, they enjoyed dressing up like firefighters, and then decided they would like to honor their firefighters by maybe dressing up like one for Halloween. Ms. D shared a “big outfit” for the class and they learned a little about the firefighter’s wardrobe. They couldn’t believe how much each one had to wear, and decided that you must be pretty strong to be a firefighter! A big thank you to the New Braunfels’ firefighters for stopping by our class. Texas kinders love their firefighters and learned a great deal about fire safety in October.
New Jersey Kinder Kids Love Fall Poetry
Our New Jersey kindergarten Poetry Friends have been learning more about seasonal poetry. They have been working on fall poems and “happy leaves.” One experience that they had was to simply throw leaves up into the air and as they watched them come down and land, shared words that came to mind. They thought of words to describe them that ended with the “ing” suffix. To add a little motion to the experience for themselves, they tried to fall like the leaves… and it was not so easy! Here are a couple of activities that other preschool and kindergarten classes might like to try. When introducing the idea of movement/verbs into the language, start with leaves. While outside, watch the leaves fall and “shout out” what the leaves are doing. Create a language experience chart when you go inside and generate a group poem. Thing (Noun…What is it?) Action (Verb…What did it do?) maple leaf dances, twirls, swirls cottonwood leaf floats, drifts, balances oak leaf demanding, jumping, swinging twig cracks, drops, breaks branch bends, twists, bows cottonwood seed pivots, twirls, twists and turns elm seed rumbles, attacks, crashes squirrel jumps, darts, runs rabbit hops, bounces, questions

MIGHTY MAGISWORDS
fields filled with color and life.” Kyle ventured away from his hometown, as many artists do. He loves where he grew up and believes that he was given support and encouragement, and enjoys visiting when he can…but he knew it was important to branch out and fail and succeed on his own. He wanted to be his own person. He was into animation at an early age and had computers and technology available always. He believes the gradual advancements of technology have been like a gift to him. His work is easier and revisions are often done with the help of other artists. He credits his wife Lindsay, a character designer, for being “there for him” and for contributing her time, efforts, and gifts to the project. Grup the Dragon, which is also voiced by Kyle, is a small dragon who enjoys sandwiches and cooking. He was vanquished by Prohyas and Vambre, but currently lives with them….Lindsay has interest in all things dragon and created Grup for the series. Day to day timelines…for a cartoonist, Kyle seems to us to be pretty structured, especially with his time. Over the years, he has come to appreciate his “down time” which often leads the way for the creative juices. He enjoys relaxation activities and you can find him watching one of his favorite Japanese series, Utraman Orb, or perhaps Galavant , an American musical comic fantasy television series that the reporters absolutely agreed our readers should see. Mondays are often built around storyboarding, story tracking and dialogue passes…Tuesdays, voice over recordings…the rest of the week will depend on new character designs, new episodes and art. Kyle’s first love were original comic books...Archie, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles..are just a couple of first reads where Kyle tried to figure out how the characters were made. “I’m always trying to break down a movie, a cartoon, a play…to see if something in it will work with what we are doing.” He enjoys the real “cartoony style” of the past and believes in honoring those artists who paved the way for cartoonists like himself. The feature reporters could have visited with Kyle all night, but knew that his time was pretty precious…and so, back to the original intent of the article, to introduce Mighty Magiswords, an animated series created by Kyle A. Carrozza. Designed specifically for Cartoon Network, it premiered Thursday, September 29th, the day after our interview. Catch Kyle’s own Prohyas as the impulsive and brave warrior for hire and his twin sister, Vambre, who hates pants and has a British accent, travel near and far to find magical swords, for which they have no idea the exact reason for doing so. In the Kingdom of Rhyboflaven and beyond this series is part of a “rich connected world of more than 400 pieces of original content including interactive shorts, narrative vlogs, hosted by the warriors themselves, and a multitude of digital games.” Did we mention that Prohyas plays the accordion…and that each sword is very, very cool…the Zombie Pumpkin Magisword has a funny voice and can spit radioactive pumpkin seeds at enemies…and the Lobster Claw can clamp onto things…and open pickle jars…and Prohyas’s favorite, the Dolphin Magisword shoots water and creates a deluge with a special move called “Dolphin Water”! Did we mention that Prohyas is a one of a kind, bit of a dork, lover of all things dolphin and seems to be the kind of guy that we would call a friend. Check out Mighty Magiswords, Thursdays, 6:30 P.M. on Cartoon Network…you’ll be glad you did! Alexis Bell North Middle Brianna Martinez Bishop Heelan H.S. Isabel Martinez Holy Cross Middle
MEET MIGHTY MAGISWORDS KYLE CARROZZA, THE CREATOR AND VOICE- OVER EXTRAORDINAIRE Cartoons have been around for centuries, but the animated cartoon is truly a choice venue for being entertained. Animated cartoons are films made for the movies, television and computer. In our opinion one of the most interesting and creative animation artists is Kyle A. Carrozza, (MooBeard: The Cow Pirate from Nickelodeon’s Random!Cartoons) who created Mighty Magiswords for Cartoon Network. Mighty Magiswords became the network’s first online original series. On September 29, 2016 Mighty Magiswords grew to become a full length TV series on Cartoon Network. On September 28, 2016, three of Kid Scoop News Siouxland’s feature student reporters were given the amazing assignment of interviewing Kyle via a phone conference…and their response was, “Awesome sauce!” The reporters found Kyle extremely easy to interview and that he supported their own artistic dreams. “Learn by doing…keep making your art and get it out there for people to see…and did I say, learn by doing?” Kyle kept emphasizing that while a dream may be difficult to reach, if you are not out there creating your art and sharing it, that dream will be impossible. As we’ve found with other people we’ve interviewed, it is also important to find those people who believe in your dreams and who will help you reach them. “I think Kyle is the kind of person who would be my friend, I mean like, he talks the same language I do,” one of the reporters mentioned. “I think he means find a “sensei”…that’s what I think he means.” Kyle gave the reporters a lot to think about as he seemed to really understand what kids want and think. Mighty Magiswords, in a nutshell, is about a brother-sister warrior team who are on a mission to collect, of course, crazy and magical swords that will help them in future adventures. Kyle actually is the voice for Prohyas, the brother member of the team. Prohyas’s sister, Vambre, has her own distinct style. Most characters are a mixture of many personalities, and Kyle shared that he watches and listens, and finds material around him every day. As one might guess, Mighty Magiswords was created by the mind of a lifelong creative person who saw humor in everyday events, even as a child. Kyle grew up in Catskill, New York, a quiet and small mountain town. He mentioned that he didn’t live by many classmates, so a great deal of his time was spent outside near and around the Catskill Mountains. “I’m less likely to draw city scenes in my cartoons. You’ll see mountains and grassy

VILLAINS, HEROES AND ACTION ACME COMICS AND COLLECTIBLES
ACME COMICS
Fran and Kevin McGarry have celebrated more than 20 years of business with ACME Comics and Collectibles in Siouxland and hope to celebrate many more. Each and every day is filled with the stuff of business and the Wednesday excitement of the possibility of 70 new titles showing up for inventory. This keeps everyone busy. While Kevin did not originally considered himself a person of comics, but after meeting and marrying Fran, he knew that this was in the cards. Fran had managed a comic book store in Omaha and told Kevin that if she moved to Sioux City, a comic book store would be in their future. Kevin and Fran collected inventory for over four years after moving to Sioux City and finally opened their store on Hamilton Boulevard. Later, the business would move to Pierce Street and become the business that it is now. Kevin had grown up in Sioux City, being a past and current fan of all things Batman so being part of a comics’ business was an easy sell. As a child, his mother would find old comics at yard and rummage sales, fill a bag, and give them to him for entertainment when they traveled. As a child and now as a retailer at conventions, he has met the real Adam West, and still finds the original Batman the most interesting. Kevin shared that some of the newest trends in comics include: Harley Quinn, Supergirl, Flash and the Arrow. Cartoon Network and Disney continue to give the industry materials for consideration and the Avenger franchise has gone a bit crazy. Many of his customers are in their 20s and Wednesday is definitely the busiest day of the week. It begins at seven in the morning, with restocking, bagging and boarding and a continual stream of customers coming through the door. While we were there, one young man and his mother were buying a set of materials and then inquired about the cards…he seemed pretty excited about the possibility of purchasing an addition for his collection. We asked
They have comics like Batman, Superman, The Flash, Spiderman, Ironman, and just about any superhero you can think of. They also have posters and other collectibles. ACME Comics is the biggest comic book stores in Sioux City. Be sure you are always waiting on a sale because you could get a steal on a comic book. Connor Bos Mater Dei Grade 8 It’s all in the animation….the colors, the lines, the action. It’s in creating that one special character that comes alive on the screen and shouts out to be heard. There are few quiet voices on the screen…even the set itself calls out to be seen. From the early Disney…to a more modern Cartoon Network, one can’t dismiss the action and high tech online. J.E. Kevin about the age of customers, and it was apparent, just being there, that the collecting of all things comic book related knew no age boundaries. The first Saturday of May brings the annual free comic day. Feature reporter Alexis Bell has stood in line and remembers that line being long…but well worth the time. “You come in, and you get to select that one perfect comic, and then…well, just the visit is perfection for me.” People assumed with the digital age that all comics would go online…but that just didn’t happen. “People still want to hold the comic in their hands…you can’t replace that…” We agreed that even with books, people will use electronic readers, but if push came to shove, they want that hard copy…there is nothing like the real thing! We appreciated the time that Kevin took to visit with us. It was obvious that ACME Comics and Collectibles is one busy place. If you have the time, and love finding that perfect read….graphics, color …the pop art and not to mention the Adam West Batman Show influence then you will love ACME. The images produced by Kapow! SKREEECH! And KABOOM! Are ones of fairly modern culture. The cool thing about comics is the visual language and the assistance the comics have in helping a reader to understand the story. It is apparent that comic book reading can actually help with a student’s reading and the graphics and color really help with comprehension. How cool is that? Kevin, Fran and their son have created an oasis in our small city for all things comic book related. In 2004, they won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award from Comic-Con International in San Diego and as we see it, continue to do an outstanding job in supporting this medium of art. Comics are for all ages and know no gender barriers. Generally, those who loved comics as young children, continue to create that bond with their own children. Comic book lingo can be found all around us, and it only takes a few trips to the comic book store to begin a lifelong love of the genre. Thanks to Marvel, DC Comics, Cartoon Network and Disney (to name a few)…it seems that comic books are alive and kicking with heroes ready to take on any villain or world issue that arises. Alexis Bell North Middle Grade 7
I like cartoons…the animation is really fun to watch, and whether on tv or online, it is a quick and easy way to be entertained if you are bored. The newer cartoons are made for older kids, and you have to think a bit about what they mean. The colors, the action..it’s all great. Chloe M. North Middle I personally enjoy watching cartoons the most out of what is listed because I get a great visual of what’s going on, I can understand the plot better because of that. Jaiden Utech Bishop Heelan Grade 9
Reading is a really good way to use your brain to form scenes and sometimes you can get so caught up in reading it doesn’t even seem like you’re reading. Suddenly, you are watching a movie being directed by yourself. Making it truly unique to you and you only. So I think I choose reading!!! Whether it be a comic book, short story, or large book, any book can send you on an adventure. Brianna Martinez Bishop Heelan High Grade 9
What a tough and difficult decision to make. When you read a book, you get the chance to use your imagination to form characters you can connect with. www.NIESiouxland.com
