n November we think about Thanksgiving, a holiday started by farming communities to give thanks for a good harvest. Today, people in farms, cities and suburban neighborhoods all celebrate Thanksgiving. But for people living in big cities, growing and harvesting the food

you eat may be difficult. Many children who live in cities have never been to a real farm.

And that is what he has done. Since 2008 he figures he has given away more than 28 tons of fresh produce.

And a mulberry tree. And potatoes. And more and more kinds of food each year, all grown by unpaid local volunteers.

“Doing things for free encourages people to share,” Tree said. “It encourages people to be a closer community, to be family. And it provides people the chance to be generous with each other.”

4 Monarch Tagging at the Sioux City Prairie

COMMUNITY

On September 8, about 40 people met at the Sioux City Prairie on Talbot Road to tag monarch butterflies. It was great to see that both young and young at heart attended! Theresa Kruid, a naturalist at Dorothy Pecaut, welcomed everyone and shared some information about monarch butterflies. The monarchs that we see in the fall are the migratory and are on their way to Mexico. These monarchs can live up to eight or nine months in Mexico! They will begin to journey north in the spring. The females will lay their eggs and “their children” will continue the journey north. The journey continues into Canada and back to the United States as the females lay their eggs and “the children” continue the journey. The monarchs that we see in the fall could be the great, great grandchildren of the ones that we saw a year ago! There are usually four generations of monarchs in this whole cycle! Theresa showed us the stickers that are used for tagging the monarchs. They are small round tags that are attached to the upper right wing. They are provided by Monarch Watch. Researchers in Mexico are able to find the tagged butterflies and are able to determine where the butterflies traveled from. Theresa said that a number of the ones released from Dorothy Pecaut have been found in Mexico. One of mine that was released in Bronson was also found in Mexico! Theresa said that the tags do not hurt the monarchs and do not affect their ability to fly. After Theresa shared more information, it was time to tag the three that had been brought and release them! She tagged and then had some of the children release them. They quickly took off and found a good resting place in the trees surrounding the prairie. As Theresa tagged, she filled in the information on the Monarch Watch recording sheet. She recorded the tag code, which is the code that identifies that monarch. She also noted the date, place of release, male or female and whether the butterfly was reared or found in the wild. Now it was time for everyone to begin their hunt for monarchs! A few participants brought their own nets. One young boy proudly showed me his new net! It even had pictures of some of the butterflies that he could catch. Theresa had brought nets and we set off into the prairie. We saw lots of prairie grasses and goldenrods, but few monarchs at first. The weather was perfect for monarchs to be traveling through and as evening drew near, many monarchs arrived to roost in the trees for a good night’s rest! The group soon began gathering by the trees and catching the monarchs with their nets. Each monarch was tagged and released. Melinda Z. from Bronson said that she spied a monarch on a thistle and worked really hard to catch her with her net. Her butterfly was tagged and released. It’s hard to imagine that a monarch whose weight is about equal to a paper clip could be so difficult to catch! At the end of the evening, 47 monarchs had been tagged and released! I’m excited to learn that Sioux City is working on providing a monarch habitat that will open in the spring. It is three acres and is located by the waste-water treatment plant. It will be planted with a pollinator mix that should attract lots of monarchs! It will provide nectar and shelter to attract not only monarchs, but other pollinating insects and migratory grassland birds. This habitat is also going to be a learning area which will have informational kiosks that will provide information about our marvelous monarchs! Thank you so much Sioux City! Beesponsible

Bees do more than just make honey — did you know we can also thank them for nearly one-third of the food we eat? Many of our healthy fruits, vegetables and nuts come from bee-pollinated plants! That’s why it’s so important for us to help bees. There are lots of things we can do to “Beesponsible” in our own daily lives.

Community and School Gardens School gardens are quietly being prepared for the winter and the students can’t wait to start digging in the spring. Many of the classrooms use the winter months to build worm communities, start seedlings, study gardening techniques and practices as well as reading fiction and nonfiction books about horticulture. There are a number of incredible grants available to classrooms where there is interest in creating a school/community garden. Master Gardener Laurie Taylor spends hours every month working at Riverside, Spalding, and Unity Elementary Schools sharing her knowledge about preparation, planting, growing and harvesting produce from their gardens. To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

Beesponsible Tips Plant bee-friendly flowers to help feed bees. Get some help from your parents and try to find plants native to your area. Build a drinking station for thirsty bees. A shallow dish with rocks will do the trick. Just make sure to keep the water fresh! Inspire others and give your neighbor a bee-friendly pot of plants. Spread your knowledge and teach your friends about the wonders of the bee. Let bees do their thing. They’re busy finding food — don’t bother them, and they won’t bother you. Cool Bee Facts Honeybees fly faster than you can walk. Honeybees do special dances to communicate with each other. Honeybees have a special “honey stomach” where they store the nectar that will become honey. Honeybees, unlike many native bees, are a social species that live together in a colony. Most solitary bees build their nests in the ground by digging tunnels. Visit Beesponsible.com for even more bee facts and ideas for helping bees. Beesponsible will be sharing fun and important facts about one of our most important insects. Watch for updates and be sure to check them out online. One of our favorite honeybee places, The Autumn Orchards depend on the honeybee to pollinate their apple trees every year.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye…We Bid Farewell to Riverssance 2017…Fare Thee Anon!

With sadness, we bid Riverssance 2017 a Fare- Thee -Well and we look forward to next year when the Three Rivers Meet and our readers learn more about a fanciful time period and individuals who love to recreate the day. This year, several of our Kid Scoop News feature reporters spent time with many of the Riverssance characters, and “lived to tell about it!” After being spotted by the Crow Sisters with rotten apples, and dubbed with a “blessing” by the MudMan, exalted by Sir Robert and entertained by the Fantasy Figure Penni… the reporters all agreed they had a great deal of fun and will gladly return next year! The annual coloring contest sponsored by the Riverssance Committee was exciting and two artistic winners were named to share a Royal Court Feast during Saturday’s event. Ladies in Waiting Kaitlyn Oehler and Summer Birdsell from Lawton-Bronson Elementary School addressed the King and Queen of Riverssance with a bow, a curtsey, and a message of choice. Food was created by the Royal Chefs and delivered by their humble servants, who listened to a few “snooty” ladies complain about the service, but greedily ate the fine food.

Hallows’ Eve T’was the night before The Day of the Dead, and all through the cemetery, not a person was around, except one little girl named Lacey Hallows. She is 7 years old. Lacey lives with her grandma and grandpa. Their rules are very strict and hard to follow so… she ran away. It had been three years since her parents had died. She was trying to find their grave. It was her first time visiting the cemetery, so she didn’t know where it was. She just wished they wouldn’t have died! They died in a fire. She was in her room reading a book, then she heard her grandma scream. When she got up to try to find her grandma and why she screamed, she found her lying on the floor crying. Then she heard through the sobbing that her parents were dead. No one knows how the fire started. She found a grave that said Valentine. When she heard a twig snap behind her, her head whipped around, body slowly following. Her whole body went cold, like all the life was drained out. She opened her eyes, and saw a book lying on the ground in front of her. The book’s title was The Lost Hallows by Lucy and Peter Hallows. Those were her parents’ names. A rush of confusion and anger dwelled deep inside her. She opened the book, inside she found…

Cora R. Sibley-Ocheyedan CSD Ms. Heyn’s 6th Grade Literacy The Abandoned House There was an old legend, about this abandoned “mansion”. It was about a century old. When people lived there no one knew what happened to them. Some say that ghosts took their souls. Some say they vanished out of thin air, and others simply said they moved. No one believed it. Three kids Josh, Eric, and Marie all decided the legend was dumb and they went to the house. After 15 minutes they were there. They walked in and they looked around, They dared to stay the night. Josh went to get some firewood. When he got the fire started they told stories, Marie decided to let the boys have their “guy talk”. So she went upstairs to put her bag in a room. The boys all of a sudden heard a scream from upstairs. Eric and Josh were terrified. They boys slowly walked upstairs. When they got upstairs Eric said, “Marie?” They heard footsteps in the room at the end of the hall. They went in the room and saw something dragging her, and then it disappeared. They saw Marie dripping in blood on her arm and a little bit from her head, dead. The boys looked at each other in shock then looked back at Marie. Josh looked away for a second to find the thing that killed her then, he heard another scream. He looked at the place Eric once stood. He had dropped dead, too. 8 Fall Fun and Thanksgiving Treats! Climbing up the Old Oak Tree.. The feeling of the rough bark of a tree scraped the palms of my hands as I gripped it. The smell of the oak filled my nose, a familiar scent. The sounds of the squirrels scurrying up the tree, the birds melodic songs filling the air, and the wind whistling through the leaves. The taste of the crisp air on my tongue, seeming like an ambrosia. Best of all, the sight of all the nature around me, the beauty of creation. The oak tree became even more majestic as I climbed it, every inch holding another secret of nature. A simple tree creating a whole new world to see, a simple tree. The world appeared to be much more real than it ever had before. It was almost as though I was looking through the eyes of an owl high in the sky, a squirrel burrowing in the tree, or a deer in the middle of a forest. All of the work it took to climb this simple tree, seeming like an inexpensive price for the beauty of creation. Isabel Martinez Holy Cross Grade 8 What do you do on Thanksgiving? My family likes to watch football, so this year we will watch the Vikings playing at the Lions, the Chargers playing at the Cowboys, and the Giants at the Redskins. The next day we will watch the Nebraska game. Since about ninetyfive percent of my family are Nebraska fans, they don’t want to watch the Iowa game because they all hate Iowa. Watching Iowa win gives most of them the chills. Later, it’s time to eat all the good stuff: the meat and potatoes, the stuffing, all the vegetables, the corn, carrots, peas, and everything else is just amazing. Everyone has a great time when it’s time to eat but first you have to say grace, which is the most important part of our meal. Sometimes we go to my Grandma’s for Thanksgiving and we have a great time. She might be the best cook of all time. My Grandma, Grandma Darlene, is so nice and an amazing woman who hosts Thanksgiving every other year. We have all the meat you can imagine. We have prime rib, turkey, ham, deer, geese, and even pheasant. Overall, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and it’s just all about family and the food! Grade 7

Mmmmmmm, do you smell that? I love the smell of Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because all of my family are together and it’s truly amazing. It’s a time for all of us to say why we are thankful. I love the weather and the football. Some of my traditions are going to my Great Aunt Vickey’s house and watching Charlie Brown with my little cousins. My Grandma and my Aunt Vickey in the kitchen making delicious food and I come in to help a little, though I am mainly the taster. Before my Great Uncle Mike died in 2016, he would make the turkey and help set up the tables and tell hilarious stories. One year we got a propane tank that gave the turkey a slight smokey taste. Zoey Vondrak Mater Dei Grade 7 The holiday Thanksgiving has been celebrated around the world for more than four hundred years. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year in the United States. It is known in the U.S. as a day where we give thanks for family, food, football, and all of our many blessings from God as well as acknowledging our connection to the Native Americans. On Thanksgiving, families across America celebrate with a large feast consisting of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, pumpkin pie, and many other tasty foods. Thanksgiving is a tradition started hundreds of years ago by Native Americans and Pilgrims. Pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution in England and coming to the “New World” or as we know it, the United States. On September 6, 1620, one hundred and eleven people boarded a ship called the Mayflower. They sailed for sixty-five days and arrived at the United States to start the new lives. Libby Francisco Mater Dei Grade 8 What is your favorite season? Mine is autumn because all the leaves are falling. Also, some days are nice and cool and some are warm. On the nice cool days, I like to wake up and go make breakfast and get coffee or hot cocoa then go read a book. I might take my dog outside because my dog, Bender, loves playing outside in the leaves. I also like fall because I get to go watch football and I love Thanksgiving. Jayden Pelster Mater Dei Grade 8 Fall is the season of family The colors don’t change daily It’s a time to be thankful Because it’s Thanksgiving and I am so grateful The leaves are starting to fall The piles are getting tall I need to give my friends a call Because autumn is such a ball Green, red, yellow, and brown Just because summer is over, you don’t need to frown Fall has just began And autumn is so grand! Lucy O’Hern Mater Dei Grade 7 Gobble! Gobble! Gobble! On Thanksgiving we go to my cousin’s house in LeMars. My aunt makes turkey and ham. My other aunt makes corn and mashed potatoes. some delicious homemade cookies. When it comes to dinner time, we sit down, hold hands, and go around the table and say why we are thankful. After dinner we wait an hour. We go down stairs and play the Just Dance Wii: dads vs. moms. We play the team “kids” and all the winners have a round. The overall winner receives a trophy. The parents go upstairs and my uncle plays the guitar; we all sing along. I have the best time! We have dessert; we eat cookies and brownies with a little hot chocolate. Sarahi Guerra Mater Dei Grade 7 Fall is here at last! Playing in the leaves is surely a blast, The color is yellow, orange and red. After Thanksgiving I bet you’ll be fed. You might step on a leaf and it will crunch, After Thanksgiving you’ll have so many leftovers you’ll eat them for lunch. Snow will be here soon, When you rake up leaves whistle a happy tune! Hot cider will burn your mouth at first, Don’t eat too much on Thanksgiving or you may feel like you are going to burst! You can play games with your family. After this Thanksgiving, you’ll be waiting for next year’s anxiously. Cori Parry Mater Dei Grade 7 Mmm, Mmm, Mmm! Every year my family gets together for Thanksgiving and for the Iowa -Nebraska game (Iowa is going to win, of course). The day after Thanksgiving is the Iowa-Nebraska game. Most of the time we go to my grandpa’s house and bet some money which is super fun. We usually do this activity where we make a chart with what we think the score will be at the end of the quarter. We draw out of a hat and whatever you get is what you get. If your score at the end of the quarter is right, then you win some money. The day of Thanksgiving, turkey day, we usually all go out to my grandpa’s or my aunt’s and we fry a turkey and cook a bunch of other foods, which is delicious. Before we eat though, all the kids play football. I am so grateful that the Pilgrims and the Indians had the first Thanksgiving and that they gave us the idea for this great holiday. everything we’re thankful for! It’s one of the best fall holidays!! In my family, we love to celebrate our Thanksgiving with my mom’s grandma, sisters, and their families! We have a late lunch feast! Our feast always includes turkey, ham, stuffing, pies, and much more! Before we eat our feast we do a family prayer, we also go around the room and each of us shares our thankful thoughts. We also ride the ATV and four-wheelers. If there is snow on the ground, we tie a car hood to the ATV and we ride on the hood while we take turns driving! It’s so fun! I hope you have an amazing Thanksgiving! Happy Holidays! Elen Pruett Mater Dei Grade 7 Gobble, gobble! Don’t you just love Thanksgiving? There are so many yummy foods and delicious smells! It’s such a fun, but stomach filling, holiday. There are so many decorations, too, like little pilgrims, pumpkins, and turkeys. The best part of Thanksgiving is all the mouthwatering food like ham, turkey, corn, pie, and hot cider. But an even better part of Thanksgiving is all the family gatherings and traditions. Do you have any family traditions or anything special that you do for Thanksgiving? I know that I do. Every Thanksgiving my mom, dad, sisters, and I all go to my grandma’s house for a big feast. All my cousins, aunts, and uncles are there, too. Everyone brings at least one thing of food that they’ve made and everything is always so delicious. We all eat together and talk about the latest things in our lives while all my younger cousins run and play. After all that, we eventually all leave and everyone goes back home with their bellies filled and happy thoughts. Abby Albenesius Mater Dei Grade 7 What’s your favorite part of Thanksgiving? My favorite part has to be the food. Thanksgiving is a day to spend with your family and say thanks for the things you have. Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays, makes me feel stuffed. You get to eat so much food such as potatoes, green bean casserole, stuffing, turkey, ham, cheesy potatoes, and usually some pie. Every year on Thanksgiving my parents spend the whole day cooking and sometimes the day before. Thanksgiving takes a lot of time to prepare for especially if you have family or friends that come over. Before we start eating, we go around the table and list some things we are thankful for. It is good to be thankful for things because some people might not get a nice meal on Thanksgiving. I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving! Ireland Uhl Mater Dei Grade 8

AUTUMN THOUGHTS

On Thanksgiving I go to my grandma’s house and of course eat turkey. We all gather around the table. After we eat we all watch football. My family is big into football. So you can only imagine what happens. Then after that I go over to my other grandparents house. Some people eat chicken on Thanksgiving. That’s a weird tradition. What do you do on Thanksgiving, National turkey day? Madison Maas Grade 7 What is your favorite season? Mine is fall because all of the leaves changing colors, the beautiful decoration, and everything about fall just makes me happy. Whenever I come inside from playing with my dog Myla, the hot apple cider always warms me up. I love when I walk outside in the morning, and the crisp morning air hits my face. One of my other favorite parts about fall is Thanksgiving. I love all the food and I love how I get to see all of my family. For Thanksgiving we always go to my grandma’s house. We always have great food like pie, turkey, mash potatoes, and more. I love all my cousins and I love hanging out with them. I hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving with all your family and friends. Mariah Augustine Grade 8

Ah, it’s coming to that time in the year where we spend our time giving thanks and being grateful. Oh… I can’t think of the best part. Wait, yes I can… THE PIE! We LOVE our pumpkin pie sweet with the little bit of cinnamon on top. That graham cracker crust and most importantly, the delicious ice cream on top. Pie brings the family together where we give thanks for the life we have. Pinterest has some great ideas on how to have the best decorations on the block. There are many crafts as well. One includes writing on a jar: “What I’m thankful for…” where people write on a piece of paper and put it in. Many ideas on Pinterest include making home decor from real or fake pumpkins. Another one I really like is where you have a jar, fill it about a third of the way with candy corn, rap the top in twine, and put in your utensils. Pinterest is like my best friend when I’m trying to find cute or amazing crafts and decorations. That is all I have for you this time! Thank you and have a great Thanksgiving. Abigail Fenceroy Mater Dei Grade 8 When you rake up leaves, because it is your chore, do you jump into them and notice all different colors? Have you ever wondered why they turn that color? I know that I have! I just figured out why they do that! When the chlorophyll in the leaves break down it makes the green color in the leaves change to yellow, then to

9

orange, then red, and eventually brown and crumbly. Chlorophyll is a green part of the plant cell that helps with photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a cycle that plants use to make energy. When the chlorophyll breaks down the leaves can’t perform photosynthesis to stay alive so they die. Then they get darker and darker. So next time you rake up leaves, compare the colors and try to figure out which ones are older and which ones are younger. Ask your parents if they know. I asked my mom and she had no idea. So if you ever wonder why some leaves change from one color to another, this is why. Taylor Jochum Mater Dei Grade 8 Every Halloween, we go trick-or-treating with some friends. We go around their neighborhood by ourselves, then we go trick-or-treating around my neighborhood. Last year, I was a member of the swat team. I wore a real bullet proof vest that belongs to my uncle, who is a sheriff’s deputy. I love getting candy! After trick-ortreating, we go to my house, wrap up in blankets, and watch a movie. I love this tradition and the next one.... Thanksgiving! Jolee K. Gobble, Gobble, is that a turkey, or the food being eaten? Either way, that means Thanksgiving is approaching. Thanksgiving, what an amazing holiday. It is only celebrated in America by feasting and football. It is this time of year when everyone comes around to eat! We do this by visiting a grandparent`s house, an aunt’s or uncle`s house, a cousin`s house, or even at your own house, but this wouldn`t happen if it weren’t for the Indigenous People and the Pilgrims. The Indigenous People lived here first on the land and they helped the new families with gardening and hunting. The Pilgrims came to America on the Mayflower in which they held a spectacular feast, but that is a huge story and I could go on and on about how it happened. But instead of trying to cram history into here, why don’t we just cram some cranberries into our mouths... shall we? Brian Wilmes Mater Dei Grade 7 What is your favorite thing about fall? Is it the pleasant, cool weather? Maybe it’s because you can play football, a fall sport. I like the dozens of colorful leaves that can be found on fall trees. All the shades of red, brown, yellow, and orange make fall a really colorful season. However, one has to wonder: how do these leaves change from bright green to these beautiful fall colors? The main cause is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a substance that helps plants to absorb sunlight and is vital to the food making process, and it also gives plants the green color you’re used to seeing. When fall rolls around, changes in the length of the day

10 and temperatures come, too. When the leaves on the trees sense these changes, they stop their food making process. Since the leaves don’t need the chlorophyll to absorb sunlight anymore, they get rid of it, causing them to lose their green color. So the next time you look at a fall tree covered with orange and yellow, you’ll know why they are these colors when they were green several weeks ago. Ricky Arteaga Grade 8

Thanksgiving is a time when you get together and spend time with family and friends. At Thanksgiving my mom always makes the best pumpkin pie and turkey. Sometimes we invite people over to eat with us. Last time we went to our papa’s house and ate, and it was fun to eat at his house even though my mom was making the whole entire meal! It was still good. Have a good Thanksgiving! Holly Fiedler 6th grade Holy Cross

Mrs. Sealey’s Sixth Grade Classes At Holy Cross I had a dream where I was at my house and across the street in my neighbor’s driveway there was this huge truck. I walked over to it. The truck was on and had the keys in it with the window open. I got in it and it went backward down the driveway with the door open and me hanging on. The parking brake wasn’t on so that’s probably why it rolled backward. I got in the truck and steered it into the road and it started rolling forward down the street. I steered the truck down the streets of the North area. Somehow I got to my brother’s school and that’s where the truck finally stopped. I got out of the truck and saw a few of my school friends. Next to the school there was a public bus so my friends and I got in the public bus. I didn’t tell the bus driver where my location was so I didn’t know where I would get off. We arrived to this random park and got off the bus. I looked around when I got off and saw this big building. I walked to it and went inside and saw my mother rehearsing a meeting. I said to her that I wanted to go home because I was freaked out about what happened. So she took me home! Paulsen Fey 6th grade Holy Cross

One day I had a dream that I was walking through a corn field. When I eventually got to the end I saw a young girl in a muddy ripped dress swinging on a swing that hung from an old oak tree. I started to walk closer and heard she was singing. The little girl’s voice was cracked and raspy. Eventually, she vanished and the swing vanished with her! That was my craziest dream! Grace Stanek 6th grade Holy Cross

I love fall! It might not be my favorite season of the year, but I do love fall. I just love all the colors of the leaves and how sometimes it’s sunny outside, not too cold or not too hot. That’s one of the things I love about fall and there are more. I also love Halloween. I love Halloween because it’s the time of the year when I can scare people and watch scary movies (which I love). They are my favorite kinds of movies, but they have to be funny too. My brother likes them, but he sometimes is scared. When he is around I put the volume up and he just screams and tells me to put it down. I just laugh at him. Another thing I love about fall is Thanksgiving because of the FOOOOOD!!! That is one out of the many chances of the year that I get to eat a lot of food!!! I also love Black Friday because I get to go out and buy things that are useful to me like clothes, shoes, and other stuff that are not useful but I still want. Those are all the things I love about fall. All the memories I have made and all the memories that are waiting to happen. Elizabeth Lopez 6th grade Holy Cross

Fall is my favorite time of year because it is the perfect weather and Halloween and Thanksgiving are around the corner. I love that all the leaves are changing colors. I also like playing volleyball which is in the fall. In fall you get to go outside and not be cold or hot. I love having all the Thanksgiving food on Thanksgiving. I like to see all the leaves falling. Those are some of my favorite things about fall! Sophie Stabile 6th grade Holy Cross Thanksgiving is about the turkey and football right? Wrong! Thanksgiving started with the Mayflower and colonists wanting freedom from Britain. In 1621 the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn with the people on the Mayflower. The Wampanoags harvest became a feast that is known now as the first Thanksgiving. It wasn’t until 1863 that Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the national Thanksgiving Day! Ramon Martinez 6th grade Holy Cross Fall has to be one of my favorite seasons because I love the weather, colors, clothes, and the sports. Plus you can take great artsy photos. One of my favorite memories from fall was when my dog, Lucy was galloping like a deer and playing in the leaves. Also, Halloween is coming up so you can get candy, a lot of candy. The one thing I absolutely love about fall is the clothes. You get to wear Uggs, leggings, sweaters, and hats. Another thing is that the colors are so pretty, yellows, reds, oranges, and brown. I downright enjoy decorating for fall and Halloween! My favorite sport to watch in the fall is volleyball and I also love to play it, too! The weather in the fall is just perfect, it’s not too hot or too cold. Abbie White 6th grade Holy Cross I don’t know why some people want the TURKEY to be to be the national bird. I think the eagle is a great choice for our country. It represents our power and

freedom. Changing it would be a big step. Plus,on Thanksgiving I love to eat turkey, and I wouldn’t want to eat our country’s bird. Eagles are known as powerful and turkeys are known as silly. I don’t think the turkey would be a good choice for our bird. Drew Dickes 6th grade Holy Cross I like sports because you get to watch Nebraska beat Iowa in football. In fall I like to watch football, but I do not like playing it. My dad and I like to watch football together except when it comes to college football. My dad and I like different teams so we don’t get along when it comes to college football. I like to play basketball because you get to see your friends and run around with them. I like basketball because you are inside and not outside in the cold. I play golf with my brother and Mom. Golf is my favorite sport because it is quiet and it is easy to focus. My family likes to play volleyball but I’m not into that kind of stuff. Jake Venne 6th grade Holy Cross Fall is my absolute favorite season of the four seasons. In the fall the leaves start changing colors and they start falling which I find fascinating because the leaves are so beautiful. I love when leaves fall because I can rake my great grandmother’s yard and earn some extra money. Although school starts in the fall, it’s ok because I go to Heelan and the football games are fun! In fall I love the weather because it’s not too hot and it’s not too cold, it’s perfect outside. Another reason why I love fall is that college football starts! I LOVE THE IOWA HAWKEYES!!! I’m a big Hawkeye fan. Watching football is really fun and interesting to watch...even when I don’t even know half the rules. When we’re in the fall it’s time to start thinking about Halloween, what you’re going to be. Thanksgiving comes and all the delicious food and black friday shopping arrive. I know my parents and grandparents look forward to with all of the sales! Finally, we have my most absolute favorite holiday of all CHRISTMAS! I always get really excited for winter break! During fall I think about all of these holidays coming up, which makes me very excited! When fall starts I have a good excuse to ask my parents if I can start wearing sweatpants! Volleyball and dance start in August which I really enjoy doing. Fall is my favorite season for all of these reasons! Lauren Nacke 6th grade Holy Cross Fall is my favorite time of the year because it is not too cold or hot and my birthday is in fall. Autumn a time for pumpkin pie and to play some football! Life starts over again when it gets crisp in the fall. Look at all the leaves and all the beautiful colors everywhere Rahmah Sajid 6th grade Holy Cross

Germs Make Me Sick!

by Melvin Berger, illustrated by Marylin Hafner Do your students ever ask, “Why do germs make us sick?” This easy-to-read book has the answers. It explains how germs in the form of bacteria and viruses get into our bodies and then in turn, how our bodies fight the germ invasion. We also learn why it is so important to wash hands, not share drinking cups and cover our mouths when sneezing and coughing.

My favorite book of all time is Diary of a Wimpy, Double Down. This book is the newest one in the series. You should read the other books before you read this one. This is a really funny book. The main character is Greg, who is in middle school. One part of the book is about Greg thinking he is in a show even though he is not. Another part of the book is when he starts playing the French horn just to go to a party. He finds out he wasn’t invited, but luckily, he goes with Rowley who is invited to the party. At the end he makes a movie with his friend Rowley called the Night of the Night Crawlers. The problem is there is only one actor and it is Rowley. They try to produce it but eventually give up. This book is a must read. Joe Young My favorite book of all time is Prisoner B-3087. It is a book based on a true story on how one child survived the most brutal tortures you could ever imagine. It is about a boy named Yanek who was a 12 year old German. One day he got caught helping someone escape Germany so that she wouldn’t have to go to a concentration camp. So the S.S. or German special forces put Yanek in the concentration camp along with the person. He went through 10 different concentration camps. His time in concentration camps was for four years. The longer he was there the harder it got. He worked hard, was beaten, and starved. While he was in the concentration camps he made friends and lost friends. He had to watch family, friends, and innocent people get beaten to death. While a difficult book to read, it is important we know the facts about history and reading a historical fiction book will help to do just that! Radyn Neal Mater Dei Grade 7 Have you ever read Shooting Stars by Buzz Bissinger and NBA superstar, LeBron James? It is about the struggles and hardships that LeBron went through before his success in the NBA. When LeBron was in elementary school, he had to go to live at his friend’s house and he would only see his single mother on the weekends. Shooting Stars shares the story of LeBron and his high school teammates becoming men. They started a team with the same name in elementary school. It discusses how all the championships that they won from freshmen year to senior year were challenging and worthwhile. At the end the author discusses LeBron’s early life in the NBA. LeBron demonstrates to all that even the most disadvantaged child can go from “rags to riches.” Connor Bos Mater Dei Grade 8

Do you like to read? I don’t. My last name is basically Book; so you’d think I’d like to read…but I don’t. I hate books and I always have, but one day I fell in LOVE with two absolutely AMAZING BOOKS! They were written by Kimberly Griffiths Little. One is The Time of the Fireflies and the other one is When the Butterflies Came. I was super sad to finish them and it took me less than three days to read them! I couldn’t put them down. When the Butterflies Came shares how Tara’s grandma went “missing” and whenever something bad happens to their family, Tara’s mom has a huge mental breakdown. Their unpaid maid was watching over them. The girl Tara gets a mysterious letter that is from her grandma. She finds out that there are secret hints in each letter that can help her find the next letter. She finds a key with each of the letters found. Her grandma let them live in her house to see the nipwisipwis she finds the last letter and she finds something from the VERY secluded and hidden hint. To find out what she finally finds and who discovers, you’ll have to read the amazing book, The Time of the Fireflies. Sidney Koob Mater Dei Grade 6

he Nutrition Facts label gives you information about the nutrients in the food. The Nutrition Facts label is printed somewhere on the outside of packaged food and you usually don’t have to look hard to find it.

Nutrition Facts labels also tell the percentage provided by that food of the recommended daily amount of a nutrient. The cupcake nutrition label says one serving of these snacks provide 22% of the amount of fat recommended to be eaten in one day. (That’s an awful LOT!)

Serving Size: Nutrition Facts labels list a serving size, which is an amount of food such as 2 crackers, 1 cup of cereal, 2 cookies, or 5 pretzels. The nutrition label tells you how many nutrients are in that amount of food.

Some nutrients are measured in milligrams, or mg. Milligrams are very tiny–there are one thousand milligrams in a gram.

13 Nellie is navigating the aisles of the grocery store looking at Nutrition Facts labels. Fill in the blanks on her list.

There it is, Crazy Horse standing 6,532 feet tall. I think the sculpture is really cool and you should visit it if you get the chance. Crazy Horse is the 27th tallest mountain in all of South Dakota. The sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, designed Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse is expected to be done in 15 to 20 years, though Ziolkowski died when he was only 34. Crazy Horses was designed to honor the Indian Chief that fought a Great War in the 1870s as they fought against the U.S. government for their land. The war was fought in the Black Hills. The Native Americans won this war against the U.S. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Crazy Horse died on September 5, 1877. Crazy Horse fought in the battle against the government called Little Bighorn. They fought the war because the government was taking the Native Americans’ land. That was one reason that Crazy Horse fought in the war called Little Bighorn as well as the loss of their culture. Luke Longval There you are looking at the really cool and neat Crazy Horse. Crazy horse is crazy big; it is the 27th tallest mountain in all of South Dakota. The mountain was chosen by the sculptor and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear for the memorial. The sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, began Crazy Horse but sadly he died in 1982 on October 20th. He has been dead for 34 years and they are still working on it, and his children are doing a lot of it. Crazy Horse is 6,532 feet tall; that is amazingly tall! It is a very amazing sight, and I hope you see it. They are supposed to get done in the next 15 to 20 years. That might not happen because the government will not fund this monument. If completed, Crazy Horse will be the world’s largest sculpture. It honors a leader of the Oglala Lakota people from the region. Crazy Horse, an Indian Chief, fought a Great War in the 1870s, and fought against the white people for their land, and they won. The Native Americans fought on the Black Hills. The Black Hills are the ground of the Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore. More about the person Crazy Horse, they say he was one of the greatest Native American leaders of all time; that is an astonishing title to have. Crazy Horse died on September 5, 1877 Crazy Horse fought in the battle against the whites called Little Bighorn. The whites harassed the Native Americans and the Natives had enough if it; they were angry at the government because their land and way of life was threatened. Keegan Flanigan Mater Dei Grade 7 There you are looking at the really cool and neat Crazy Horse. I think it is really cool and you should visit it if you get the chance. Crazy horse is CRAZY huge; it is the 27th tallest mountain in South Dakota, and is the only one to be carved into a great Indian chief. Korczak Ziolkowski, the sculptor who started the statue Crazy Horse, but he unfortunately died on October 20th 1982, and his great sculpture continues his great legacy. He has been dead for 35 years and they are still working on it, and his kids are doing most of the job. Crazy Horse is 6,532 ft tall; that is amazingly tall! It is an amazing place to be, and I wish to see it again. They are supposed to be done in around 15 to 20 years. My opinion on the matter is just that Mount Rushmore is a great historic reminder. Crazy Horse, an Indian Chief, fought in the Great War around the 1870s, they battled the whites for their land and other reasons, it was a hard fought and different from other wars but they still won. The Native Americans mostly fought on top of the Black Hills, which is why it was chosen to put this statue there. The Black Hills are the ground of Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore and will be his land forever since marked by his monument. They say he was one of the greatest Native American leaders of all time. That is a hard title to have and an amazing title to keep. Crazy Horse died on September 5, 1877 and it was a great loss to the Indians and history. Sadly, I don’t know when he was born, but I do know that he was born in Rapid City. Crazy Horse fought bravely in the battle against the prosecutors called Little Bighorn, it is very famous battle. The whites harassed the Native Americans for many years and they finally snapped: they decide to do the most common way, WAR! That is the reason why the battle of Little Bighorn was fought. 15 Girls’ Inc...Check us Out Last night, I had a strange dream. I was walking to school in my pajamas but suddenly felt myself floating off the ground. Next thing I knew, I had feathers and a beak. I was a bird! Flying was really fun but tiring. So, I sat on a cloud to rest. I sank through the cloud and then fell through the sky. I splashed down into a pond. I could swim really well because now I was a fish! A much bigger fish started chasing me. I jumped out of the water to escape and flew back to my room. I was a flying fish. Then my alarm went off and I woke up. Read about Kevin’s dream. Then number the pictures in order.

During the summer months, feature writers from Girls’ Inc. shared their thoughts about the summer activities with our Kid Scoop weekly readers. This year, we’ve asked them to continue their “blog” and keep us posted about news and special activities. Girls’ Inc provides an incredible after school experience for girls in all grade levels. At Girls Inc., we do many fun things! When you arrive at Girls Inc., you’ve entered the kingdom of freedom. The teachers here are kind and helpful. In the gym we play games made out of our own creativity and imagination. We also make choices of games to play, so be our guest! Did you know that we learn about different subjects as well? The teachers take time out of their day to teach all of us girls! In SMART we do many experiments. Surprisingly, I learn twice as much at Girls Inc. than in many other places. Each age group has their own classroom, too! If you come to Girls Inc. don’t worry about being shy, girls in your class are probably shy, too! At Girls Inc., we are all friends, so if you come here reach out to the other girls so you can get the feel of how we act here. I promise it will be fun at Girls Inc We also have delicious food from our favorite chef, Miss Claudia. Every day is a surprising day. When you sit down to eat, you’ll feel comfortable around the other girls. You’ll also feel safe in your surroundings. If you have homework, you are welcome to go to the tutoring center. A teacher will be in there to help you with your hardest homework problems, so don’t worry. Sometimes people volunteer in the tutoring center, so they are there to help you through it as well. I recommend that everyone go to Girls Inc.! I love it here! Tina Ngo Girls’ Inc.

Irwin’s Future Stars Fall Festival Celebration at Leeds Elementary Feature Reporters: Joslyn and Nyamal Have you ever seen an elementary classroom full of students who already know what their career will be when they grow up? In Mrs. Irwin’s fourth grade classroom at Leeds Elementary that is exactly what her students knew. They dressed up as “their career”. There were students who were dressed up as a Nascar driver, teachers, football players, a welder, along with a professional dancer and many other choices. This celebration included all students in the classroom with activities that included the good old Bobbing for Apples. Many of our classmates have never bobbed for apples and Mrs. Irwin said it was fun and tricky, as Heavenly found out! Besides, the apples were delicious and healthy for us. Even if we didn’t want to bob for an apple we all ate one. Do you know what it is like to see in the dark? Well, that is another activity that we did during our Fall Festival we broke open a piñata being blindfolded. It took a lot of students to try before the pumpkin broke open and out spilled the good old candy! We all split the candy along with our teacher because tootsie rolls are her favorite. The celebration ended with all of us eating Fall Festival Chex mix, cupcakes, ricecrispy treats, water, candy, and other items we brought. Our parents were invited to help celebrate with us. It was fun and we liked all the different activities included dressing up and talking about why we each choice our career! What is your career choice?

Which would make a better of the United States – a bald eagle or a turkey? More than 200 years ago, the Founding Fathers wanted to choose an animal for the great seal of the United States. They wanted an animal that would what the newly formed United States of America was all about. For six years, bitterly debated which animal would be the country’s symbol. Finally in 1782, the bald eagle was selected.

Not everyone thought the bald eagle was the right animal. Benjamin Franklin thought the turkey was a better symbol. Franklin wrote to his daughter, referring to the eagle’s “bad moral character,” saying, “I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country! The turkey is a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America.”

The bald eagle supporters finally had their way and it has been the national bird of the United States since 1782, when it was placed with wings on the great seal of our country. But, Ben Franklin’s words remind us that the turkey is also a special creature. In truth, if someone calls you a turkey, take it as a compliment! Money. How to earn it, save it, and spend it. You see the new Superman action figure, but you don’t have enough money to buy it. What do you do? I am James Cleary, and I am here to tell you just that. First, you get an allowance from your parent or guardian by doing house work. I sell sweet corn in the summer and work in my grandparents’ barn. When you do work, make sure you know what you are doing; you don’t want to get hurt. Saving. I save my money in many containers. Like my quarter tube. It’s a tube that when it’s full I have $50 in quarters. You can use a box, a jar, or a bank. But don’t get a safe because if you forget the combination, you lose all your money inside it. Whatever you use, all that is important is that your money is safe. You can also put your money safe in a bank and save it. My favorite is a jar so I can mark it with how much money is in it. Keep your money safe! Spending. You did it! You saved enough money to get the Superman action figure! You gather your money and head for the store! You see it, the all new Superman action figure and you have $5 left after you buy it. You go over and see an animal shelter donation box, and you give the rest of your money to it. Remember save your money, don’t spend all of it. This is James Cleary signing off; good luck and remember to save your money! Mater Dei Grade 6 In my savings account, at the bank, I have over $600. I have been saving for five years now. I get most of my money from mowing my grandparent’s lawn. I also get some money from birthdays and holidays. Half of what I earn goes to the bank, some goes to the Siouxland Humane Society, and the rest I spend. I have a savings account because I am saving to go to college. I want to be an airline pilot when I grow up. I want to go to the University of North Dakota. I enjoy flying and looking at planes when I go to airports, so I think I would be a good pilot. Some people, like my mom, are afraid of flying, so when we go on vacation, we have to take the least amount of connection flights. Earn a little “pocket change” Jason Gehling, Business Banking Manager and Market President for Wells Fargo in Sioux City, has some sage and sound advice for our students. If looking for ways to earn a little “pocket change” and have some time to do so, consider the following ideas for fun and enjoyable work. 1. If you have the available space, plant a garden and sell the produce to family and friends. 2. Solicit a few neighbors for mowing jobs. With many families having both parents working this would be a time saver for them. There are times whenparents are willing to pay a young adult to do work like this simply to help them out. 3. Tutoring. There may be younger neighbor kids or cousins who could use help with school work, band, or sports. I know my own children enjoy working with someone other than mom or dad and it demonstrates the importance of learning. Completing a job to earn money teaches us the importance of hard work, appreciation for what we have and allows us to be somewhat financially independent and not reliant on others to provide the items we need or want. Completing a job well is a value we all strive to have.

KINDER KIDS & 1ST GRADE FRIENDS

Ms. Jungers’ kinders from Hunt Elementary

Hello from New Jersey!

Ms. Jungers’ kinders from Hunt Elementary were visited by some very special service people last month. Fire Fighters from the Sioux City Fire Department came and talked to them about fire safety. We’ve included a very special article written by Meghan Mrla in this issue as fire safety is important every day of the year. Thank you to Firefighter Josh McClure for dressing up and telling us how each piece of clothing and equipment is used. We will remember, “Stop, drop and roll,” and to create a fire safety route in our homes.

This month we have been learning about Acrostic poems in Kindergarten! This is when you take a word and write it down the page. Then you write words across the page to describe that word. We did one this month about giving thanks on Thanksgiving! Hope you try one, it is such fun! Turkey T_______________ Home H_______________ Apples A_______________ Nana N_______________ Kindness K_______________ Smiles S_______________ Ms. Clancy’s Kindergarten Class

Stop...Drop...and Roll!

Feature Writer Meghan Mrla Connections Program Home fires can start and spread quickly, which is why we all need to be careful and educated when it comes to fire safety. Just a little bit of planning can make a big difference for your family. In 2013, 334 children died in home fires. Eighty-seven percent of all fire-related deaths are due to home fires, which spread rapidly and can leave families as little as two minutes to escape once an alarm sounds. Fires are not just a problem in the United States. In 2008, nearly 61,000 children around the world died due to a fire. Some children are interested in matches and fire... They may ask questions such as how hot is fire or show an interest in fire through playing with fire trucks or cooking on a play stove. This is healthy, and it is time to begin educating about fire. Fire starting happens when children begin to experiment with fire using matches and lighters. Many fires happen when young children are left alone, even for a short period of time, and have access to matches and lighters. Parents must have clear rules and consequences about fire misuse. • Keep store matches and lighters out of children’s reach and sight, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet or container. Never leave matches or lighters in a bedroom or any place where children may go without supervision. Teach young children and school-age children to tell an adult if they see matches or lighters. Children need to understand that fire is difficult to control; it is fast and can hurt as soon as it touches you. A child with an interest in fire can lead to fire starting and result in repeated fire setting behavior. • Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate you. Never assign a young child any tasks that involve the use of a lighter or matches (lighting candles, bringing a lighter to an adult to light a cigarette or the fireplace, etc.) If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only. • Practice fire safety as a family, A family that practices together, escapes together!! Family “togetherness” will never be more important than in the event of a fire and your family is forced to escape from the home!! In the event of a fire, all members of your family must react immediately if they are to have the best chance to escape unharmed. Preparing and practicing a Family Escape Plan will assure that all members of your family know what to do if ever faced with a fire within the home. • Remember kids, be smart, and don’t touch matches. Stay away from lighters and candles, too. Don’t touch radiators or heaters. Ask an adult to turn a heater on or off for you. Don’t stand too close to a fireplace or wood stove, either. Don’t play with electrical cords. And don’t stick anything into an electrical socket. Don’t play around in the kitchen. If you want to cook something, be sure to check with a grown-up first. Don’t put anything over a lamp. Things thrown over a lamp (like blankets or clothing) could catch fire. • If there is a fire, be prepared and make an escape plan. Work with your family to plan how to get out of your home if there is a fire. Choose a meeting place. Pick a safe and easy-to-remember spot outside your home where you will meet your family after you get out. Test smoke alarms, Help grown-ups remember to test smoke alarms monthly and to put in new batteries twice a year when the clocks change. • Be Safe, Get out fast! When you hear the loud beep of the smoke alarm, get out of the house. Never hide or take time to grab your belongings or pets. Follow your escape plan. After all, you’ve been practicing!! Feel a door before you open it. If it is hot, there may be fire on the other side. Try to get out another way. Stay low to the floor. Since smoke rises, the safest air for breathing is down low. Call 9-1-1 or the fire department. Be sure to do this after you get out of the house. Remember: Only call 9-1-1 if there is a real emergency!! Stay out! Once you’re out, stay out. Don’t go back for anything!! Remember.... Stop, Drop, and Roll. If your clothing catches fire, remember to stop where you are and drop to the ground. Cover your face and mouth with your hands, and roll over and over until the flames are out. To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

31 KID TALK On Friday, October 13, six KID TALK students shared their stories at a special event held at the LaunchPAD Children’s Museum. This ODE event, designed by Ally Karysn of Siouxland Public Media, was the first student led storytelling event for the ODE specials. These students researched and revised pieces that related to the idea that their house was on fire, and they had to get out. Students considered the one thing that they might “grab” before they left the house. The overall intent of ODE is to create empathy and understanding in your audience. The students worked hard to develop pieces that did just that. A special thank you for this event goes to the following organizations and businesses: Siouxland Pubic Media, The Gilchrist Foundation, LaunchPAD Children’s Museum, Kid Scoop News Siouxland, Absolute Screen Art, and Sterk Financial. Watch and listen for these stories and others that will air on KWIT during November and December.

SPORTS

When you hear of the NFL what do you think? Do you think of the loud noises, the tailgate parties, or the crowds of people cheering on their team? When I hear of the NFL, or National Football League, I think of the fun times, good games, and the entertainment. The NFL is a hard-hitting sport filled with a lot of action and fun. The NFL, my favorite sport, is the best sport to watch. There was a lot of action and good games this week. The Kansas City Chiefs remain undefeated with a field goal for the win, being the only team undefeated. Kareem Hunt has the most fantasy points and could become Rookie of the Year. Another good rookie is Dalvin Cook for the Minnesota Vikings who has sadly been injured and out for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. Deshaun Watson had five touchdowns, four of them passing and one rushing. Watson had 24 rushing yards on only four attempts, 283 passing yards, and with that many passing yards he only had one interception. So far this year has been pretty good for the NFL. Luke O’Hern Mater Dei Grade 7 Down, Set, Hike! Nebraska and Iowa are back at it again. It will all depend on the smart decisions that are made. This glorious game is played every year just the day after Thanksgiving. The hurt players and rankings will make a big impact during the game. My prediction is that the Hawkeyes will win by seven points. The big question is who will win? Sometimes the rankings don’t matter because in some football games the team that is supposed to win doesn’t. So far the winning streak is Iowa by two. On Friday, November 24 at 3:00 p.m., turn your television to FS1 to watch the game! Iowa, my favorite team, is the team I support. Go Hawks! Lucas LaFleur Grade 7 Touchdown! Interception! Everybody loves football, right? If you do, you might watch the IowaNebraska game on November 24. This game is between two rivals who clash every year around Thanksgiving. It will be a close game. Kirk Ferentz, the Iowa Coach, will be leading Iowa to Memorial Field to clash with Mike Riley’s Nebraska. (Maybe not Riley...) The schools often met in the late 1890s and early 1900s but have played only six times in the second half of the century. They have had a total of 46 games. Their first meeting was on November 26, 1891. The largest victory was won by Nebraska 57 to 0. The longest win streak was eight games by, of course, Nebraska. The all -time series has been of course Nebraska leading 29-15-3. Ever since Nebraska moved to the Big Ten Conference, Nebraska and Iowa have met annually. Whoever wins claims the Heroes Trophy for the year. The latest win streak is Iowa winning two years in a row. This year it will be a close game. Personally, I want Nebraska to win. I think Tanner Lee and the Huskers will take the W 31 to 28. Easton Prenger Mater Dei Grade 7 Splash! That is a sound that we all already miss. For most of you, the swimming season is or has already ended, considering the seasonal change and the weather lately. Not for me! In fact, it is just starting! In Sioux City, the two most well-known swim teams are the Mariners and the Sharks. I am a teammate of the Siouxland Sharks. We practice Monday-Friday for 1½ hours a day. Sometimes we have meets, a swimming event where people come to watch different teams compete, on the weekends. It is a time consuming sport and takes a lot of dedication. There are many different options in swim. You have backstroke, breaststroke, fly, or freestyle to choose from. The length of the pool is 25 meters, so when coach says do a100 -freestyle, meaning that you go down and back and then down and back, or four lengths of the pool, and since coach said freestyle, then that is the stroke you would do it in. In meets you can do a 25, 50, 100, 200, or even a 400! You can also do an I.M, or an individual medley, which is a mix of all four strokes, and each length or two you could switch. In meets, it is fun to race others and see how you do. But what I think, swimming is more about beating yourself. It is fun to get your best time and meet new friends. All in all, just do your best and “just keep swimming!” Breauna Murphy Mater Dei Grade 7

Mine! That’s what you hear when you walk onto a volleyball court. You see people in different colored jerseys walk by with their hair tied up and a volleyball in their hands. You see the tall net and the team that’s playing. You warm up with your team, setting, passing, hitting, and digging. You get your knee pads on and your volleyball shoes tied. Next, it’s game time. During practice, you’ll see us start by setting up the net poles and untangling the net, along with adjusting the height. After that, we run a few laps around the court and stretch out. One of the things you might notice is how we serve progression, serving back and forth. Another thing we do is where there are four people on one side and a coach, on the other side. The coach throws to www.NIESiouxland.com

them and they have to pass or hit the ball to the setter so they can later hit it over the net. Right now we are ranked number one in our league. I hope the season never ends! Sidney Koob If you play any sport at all, you probably know that you should be a good sportsman. A good sportsman is someone who is respectful, kind, encouraging, and courteous on the court or field. Good sportsmen encourage their teammates in uplifting and positive ways. They respect the rules of the game and the officials’ calls. Good sportsmen can control their tempers easily when something doesn’t go their way. These certain athletes also respect the other team, win or lose. Usually, these people stick out easily because of their sportsmanship, not athleticism. Any sport, volleyball to cross country, needs these leaders. Are you a good teammate? If you are any of the adjectives above, then you are! Being a good teammate means you have a good conscience, as well as you have a more confident outlook on yourself! It will give you and others a more joyful experience in sports, as well as making it a lot more fun. And, on top of that, if you’re a good teammate you might influence other athletes. So, in conclusion, being a good sportsman has a positive influence on yourself and others! Logan Miller Mater Dei Grade 7 It is hockey time! I started playing hockey nine years ago when I was four years old. I can thank my mom and dad for getting me into hockey. They have put so much time, effort, and money for me to play hockey. I appreciate this immensely. Hockey has been my favorite sport of all time! It is a very dangerous sport. I get hurt every season. Every year I get the wind knocked out of me. I feel like I cannot breathe for a while so I sit out for a minute and then I go back in. It is all worth the hardship. I accidently got kicked out of a game once and I was mad about it. This guy from the other team and I were going into the boards, and I hit him hard. The referee took me out. I deserved the time out. That is my time playing hockey! It is fun but crazy! Trenton Fuentes Grade 7 It’s November! That means the Nebraska vs. Iowa game will be played on Black Friday. This game, the Heroes Game, is one of the biggest games for Nebraska. Their match is one of the best rivalries in college football. I can tell you this much though, Tanner Lee, Nebraska’s quarterback, had better have a good game because he’s thrown nine interceptions in five games and that is terrible. Nebraska does have a really good receiving core with De’mornay Piercenal, Stanley Morgan, and JD Spielman. This game might decide the BIG 10 West, our division. If we are the best in the West, we go to To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

the BIG 10 Championship! The past two years we’ve LOST to Iowa. That is embarrassing. Last year we lost 40-10 and the year before that we lost 28-20. Yeah, so we need to step it up this year or it will be an ugly game. We need to win this game and I really hope we do. My final prediction on the score: Nebraska 27-24. Landen Runge-Dill Grade 7

Running! If you like to run, cross country is for you. Cross country is a sport where you get to run miles through beautiful scenery. One of the best parts of cross country is that you get to run with your friends. Cross country is a team sport. An important thing to remember is that you should always stretch before running. I always like to do toe taps as my first stretch. I started cross country, a running sport, this year and I love it. When I was in my first meet, my coach taught me a trick. She told me to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. It helped me throughout the season. Cross country is a sport where you have to practice a lot. The best way to practice is with a friend or a parent. The main reason I started cross country was to get in shape and I do think it helped. Luke Ernesti Do you play football? I do and I really enjoy it. My name is Kyle Martin. I play on the offensive and defensive line for the Heelan middle school team. We have won three games and tied once this season. We beat West Monona, South Sioux City, and West Middle. We tied East Middle 14-14. We put in a lot of work to win our games. We practice every day of the week unless there is a home varsity football game. We have a tough game coming up, East Middle. East is our rival and will always be. They tied us last time and we know that it will be our toughest game of the season. It’s also to decide the first game, so this is for both games. Tomorrow we play South Sioux again; the first time we played it was a close game but we still beat them. Football is compacted with suspense and hard hits, that’s why I like football. I recommend playing football. Kyle Martin Basketball season, the best season ever, is almost here. My team, the Saders, have had two open gyms so far this year. They have been a lot of fun because we play five on five. This year we have 12 kids on our team but last year we had 10. Our team keeps getting better and better, but it also is getting bigger. There are some good and some bad things about having more kids on our team. The good things are that we have a better team. We have a lot of people with a lot of talent. The bad thing is we get less playing time. We have our open gyms at Sacred Heart. I can’t wait for our tournaments to start and for the season to finally begin. www.NIESiouxland.com

Basketball season is almost here and I hope you are as excited as I am. Nathan Lawler Have you ever played football? I have and it’s really fun. Football is a sport where you have 11 players on the field. The offense tries to take the ball into the end zone. The defense tries to stop them. I’m on the Heelan 8th grade team and our record is 3-0-1. We play North, West, East, SSC, and West Monona. We have beat West, West Monona and SSC and tied with East. Our coaches, Nick Hegarty and Curt Gengler, push our teams to never give up. We have four home games this year on Heelan’s new turf field. It’s really fun when we all wear our jerseys to the high school games. Caden LaFleur I line up for my event, Only swimming is on my mind. Hoping that all those practices were time well spent, And thinking that maybe I would break my time. There I stood by the block... Two people before me in line, And the butterflies were starting to fly. I reminded myself it would be just fine, Besides, my heat was up. I stepped onto the block and got ready, And for that moment time stood still. The butterflies were gone and my thoughts were steady, “Dive in, swim fast, do the best that you can.” Now back to the real world I hear the announcer shout,“Take your mark” I heard the beep and we were out, And I dove in with a Splash! Swimming, swimming, swimming, As fast as I could through the pool. Turning at the wall and going back to the beginning. I was almost to the end of the race. The wall was coming up fast like a train, And I was running out of steam. I was coming to the end of the lane, But I couldn’t tell if someone else had finished. I touched the wall fast, And I looked up at my time. Thankfully I hadn’t gotten last. In fact, I had gotten first place! I pulled myself out of the pool using the wall, And the timer handed me a blue ribbon. My legs were so tired I thought I might fall, But, I had a bright smile on my face. Lily Graham

Classrooms of the Month

FREE THE CHILD’S POTENTIAL, AND YOU WILL TRANSFORM HIM INTO THE WORLD! MARIA MONTESSORI

Each month, Claudia Hessa at Sugar Shack Bakery and Kid Scoop News Siouxland honor a student- nominated classroom with a special gift basket. So many nominations are received from students, and it is very difficult to select just one. This year, we’ve decided to continue the classroom of the month section and invite all of the Kid Scoop News readers to submit a nomination for your favorite class! Along with the special gift basket from Sugar Shack Bakery, the entire classroom will receive Claudia’s famous sugar cookies for their hard work!

Our Spectacular Future Stars Classroom Mrs. Irwin’s Future Stars. We are here to tell you what all we have done in our classroom so far this year and what we will continue to do to make learning fun. In math Mrs. Irwin has introduced us to a few real-life connections. Here are some examples: We write ourselves a paycheck on Fridays. (Yes, a paycheck.) Through check-writing and documentation we are learning: place value (word form and standard form), multiplication (hourly wage times total hours), decimals, money and we have to be in school in order to make money or get paid for the day (punctuality). We have an auction every other week! Mrs. Irwin buys educational items to put in our auction. Every day we have a chance to earn Irwin Bucks (pretend money with Mrs. Irwin’s picture in the middle). She is always paying us for doing special positive things and showing STAR behavior. If you save your money, you can bid on items you like with a chance of out bidding someone else. Some of us spend our money right away and others save their money. Once we bid on the item and if you are the top bidder then you have to count your money to Mrs. Irwin before you get the item. Other fun activities we enjoy include the newspaper. We go grocery shopping and buy items with money. We get the grocery ads on Wednesday and make a list of what we need or want. Again, Mrs. Irwin said this is a real life skill and it is important to realize that groceries cost money. We write up responses to the Kids Scoop every Wednesday. It is neat to see our names in the newspaper and practice our writing skills. Some of our parents didn’t know that Kid Scoop News existed until we brought our responses (the whole Wednesday newspaper) home to show them. They were just as excited as we were to see our name and classroom. We love doing hands-on-activities. We have that in our reading and math stations, too. So far Mrs. Irwin’s class is fun and learning is taking place. She is funny, too. Mrs. Irwin’s Future Stars Fourth Grade Students at Leeds Elementary

Ms. Vandenbroucke’s Third Grade Class from Hunt Loves Their Experience!

My class is special because of friends. Friends are funny and they help each other in problems. Teachers help you, too. I love my class and I hope you like it if you visit. Did I tell you I have the best teacher Miss V.? Miss V.’s fun when we do math or reading she makes it fun or makes a joke about it. We also have fun books like Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid and other books too but that’s two of them. That’s all I have for you. What is your favorite part of my story? Adrian Garcia Corona My classroom is the best class because everyone tries to be funny. The person who does the lamest jokes is Miss V. She thinks she is so funny but the other kids told me that she is not funny, but I think she is funny. Sam on the other hand, thinks that she is funny, too. The other thing I like about my class is when we do math every one helps each other. When we don’t know a problem we can ask people beside us to help us with the problem. Our teacher Miss V. said three before me! The thing I hate the most is that math is really hard for me. When Miss V. tells us what to do and I don’t get it... I’m like, “What are we doing?” She helps me. Are you like me? Oh, I forgot to ask you…was third grade hard for you yes or no? Now, let’s get back to my classroom. Reading is my favorite thing in school because of laptops and I just found out that in Lexia in level 18 is the last level! Don’t you wann’a come to my classroom? Cristopher Reynoso Lopez Hello, our names are Sam and Correna. We are going to tell you about our fun classroom! Our teacher Miss V. cracks a lot of jokes and you should hear some of them. Let us tell you one. What did the cake say to the fork?…You want a piece of me? Here is another joke. Sometimes Miss V. says she will not say your name because you have on the shirt that she doesn’t like. She said it to me because I was wearing an Iowa sweater and she was just kidding around with me. There are a lot of nice people who could be your friends. In our classroom we have awesome zig -zag curtains! They are black and white. In the classroom we have awesome chapter books. All of us had Miss V. in 2nd grade and some of us even had Miss V. in 1st grade! We had tables for two years and this year we got desks and they are awesome! We love our 3rd grade classroom do you? Samantha Gonzalez and Correna Ayon Our classroom is the best room in the school. First, we have been the same class for second and third grades. This is called looping and Ms. V. has taught some of us! Some of us were even in this same class in first grade! That’s a long time with the same class! Second, we have the greatest teacher Miss V. She is always cracking jokes like, “Where did the pencil go on vacation? ... Pennsylvania!” Third, when we walk into the room we see black and white zig-zag curtains. Wow! They are so cool! Last, our room smells like the fresh outdoors. Wouldn’t you like to come and visit the best classroom in the entire school? OUR CLASSROOM

Mrs. Ross’s Second Grade Class at Unity is Awesome!

Our classroom is special because we learn and try new things every day. The most important piece of our classroom is Mrs. Ross. She lets us use our laptops. We use books and white boards every day. Our class works very hard at Lexia. We have many groups and stations. I try my best on DOJO. I like Lexia and it is awesome. I like school because I get to see my friends. Tate Our classroom is special because Mrs. Ross is the best teacher in the whole wide world. She tells us how many DOJO points we received. Why, Nolan has thirty-eight, Yaretzi has thirty-eight, Tate has thirty and well that is great! The other important part about Mrs. Ross is that she is pretty. She is the best second grade teacher. Mrs. Ross lets us do extra writing. She lets us sit in the wobbly chairs, too. Nolan Mrs. Ross’s classroom is special because she has these great wobbly chairs. She also has three purple chairs that are very comfy. Mrs. Ross uses the dual board and she connects her computer so we can watch things on the dual board. Something cool in the classroom is Mrs. Ross’s class dojo. The bean bags and soccer balls are great. The soccer ball is black and white. Mrs. Ross’s centers are fun and she has laptops and To adopt a classroom, please call 712-293-4328

computers that are great. Her chapter books are funny...on the side they say, “My Weird School Bus.” Mrs. Ross’s books are funny and our classroom is very clean, too! Yazmyn Our classroom is special because we move wobbly chairs in our classroom. Mrs. Ross is like the best teacher ever! She has laptops. She helps us with our math and writing. She lets us bring our snacks home to eat. I like to get DOJO points because when we get to 20 points, we get to sit in the special purple chair. In math, we’ve learned about counting by fives and tens. Our classroom is so awesome. Gabby Our classroom is special because we are special. We put others first and we respect each other. We keep each other safe and happy! We learn how to do special stuff. Our teacher helps us learn to do even more stuff! Today, I gave her a ring. I like it when we do board math. When we go to WIN time, we go to a teacher or on the computer. After school, we go home to our family. Our classroom is a very good classroom! Adriana
