One of those men was Charles Turner, who many years later would become my father. I don’t know a lot about his military service because his records along with thousands of others were destroyed in a fire at the National Archives in St. Louis in 1973. And because he died when I was 8, I never had the chance to ask him about his service.

I do know he was sent to Fort Riley, Kan., for training and sometime later shipped out and was headed for France.

Fortunately for him and the rest of my family, he never made it out of the U.S. The fighting ended in 1918 with an armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. But the official end to the war didn’t happen until The Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. In 1914, what we call World War I was known as the “Great War” or “The War to End All Wars.” It was called that because nobody would be dumb enough to start another one. Unfortunately for all of us that turned out not to be true. So maybe it’s good to take time to look back 100 years to WWI and realize war is not the solution to any problem.

Holiday spending to climb 4 percent

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. | Holiday spending this year should rise about 4 percent over 2013 levels, but it won’t be all good news for all retailers.

The growth this year, if it occurs, would be a marked increase over the 2.8 percent sales growth last year over the previous year, Purdue professor of retail management Richard Feinberg said.

While sales are likely to increase, so are the number of retailers and Internet sites available to consumers, Feinberg said. That will dilute sales growth for many retailers. Total U.S. holiday spending will be close to $986 billion, Feinberg predicted in a news release issued

by Purdue. He said surveys show that shoppers are likely to spend an average of $650 to $725 on gifts.

Feinberg warned that geopolitical crises and public health concerns such as that over the Ebola virus could lower consumer confidence and increase cautiousness about spending if those stories remain in the news.

Most of the non-luxury, large retailers will appeal to consumers’ prime motivation with low prices, he said. That will mean heavy promotions and constant sales.

Late-night and even 24-hour shopping has become so prevalent that many retailers now feel they must be open nearly all of the time to keep up with the competition, Feinberg said.

Black Friday has evolved into Black November, Feinberg said. Retailers no longer wait for the Friday after Thanksgiving to launch huge sales that pack their stores with shoppers.

If you want to have the longest life possible, you should never have lit that first cigarette. Never tasted that first cheese fry. Never driven somewhere you could have walked.

If you did, take heart.

There’s still plenty you can do to add years to your life.

“Most things I would say are common-sense things, things you were taught in first grade,” says Dr. David Johnson, chair of the department of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

1. FLOSS

Flossing removes plaque, the bacterial film that forms along your gum line. Get rid of bacteria, and you lessen your chances of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and some forms of cancer.

2. GET A COLONOSCOPY

“It’s a great test,” says Radhika Vayani, an internal medicine doctor of osteopathy at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

“The 24-hour prep is the worst. You basically drink nasty stuff, and you have diarrhea.

But you won’t feel the procedure. If they see a polyp, they get rid of it right then and there.

“Exercise has been demonstrated over and over to be useful,” Johnson says. “Truth is, any level is of value.”

Benefits abound.

Among them: Eating five or more servings per day – instead of a piddly three or fewer – reduces your risk of stroke by 26 percent, according to a study reported in Men’s Health.

LOS ANGELES | As the passengers lined up to walk through an X-ray machine in the airport terminal, a surly security officer bellowed commands to the travelers.

“Empty your pockets,” she said. “Put all your items in the bin yourself. Take your shoes off.”

A few minutes later, the weary passengers walked down a jet bridge to board a Boeing 757. They settled into their seats, buckled up and prepared for takeoff as the jet engines rumbled.

Capt. Ron Nielsen, a self-described “hope merchant,” wasn’t in the cockpit. Instead, he was in the aisle holding a microphone.

“That’s the taxiing-out noise,” he said, explaining the dog-like bark of a hydraulic pump.

“What are you all thinking? Does this cause any trouble for anybody?”

Several hands shot up.

“I usually think, ‘Oh my God, why am here?’” passenger Andrea Gronwald said. “Why did I do this again?”

Gronwald and the passengers weren’t on an actual flight, and neither the aircraft nor the airport terminal was real. They were props ordinarily used to film some hair-raising aviation scenes in movies such as “Red Eye” and “Turbulence” or the TV series “Lost” at the film

But on a recent Saturday morning, the props were playing a very different role: a classroom for those suffering from an acute fear of flying.

“You’re not alone,” Nielsen, a retired US Airways pilot, assured the class. “We’re going to demystify fear of flying. There are no drugs, there are no secret pills.

All you do is you give yourself one moment of peace without that pink elephant jumping out at you.”

Since its opening in 2001, Air Hollywood has become a go-to destination for filming aviation scenes. Its aircraft sets and props have been featured in countless TV shows, commercials and movies.

Air Hollywood’s owner, Talaat Captan, launched the fear-offlying classes this year, inspired by his own turbulent experience in the

skies several years ago.

He was flying from New York to Tokyo when one of the engines on the 747 failed, and the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Anchorage in the middle of a bad storm. It took him years to force himself onto a plane again, he said.

Captan figured his studio – with its ersatz airport, four wide-body jets, 10,000-square-foot prop house and air turbulence simulator – could be the perfect environment to simulate a real-world aviation experience.

Billing itself as the “Safest Airline in the World,” Air Hollywood offers classes called “Open Sky for Autism” to help autistic children and their parents cope with the stress of flying.

There’s also a K9 school that provides training for owners and their canine companions to fly with minimal stress.

End of an outlaw Fort Sumner, N.M., is home to Billy the Kid

FORT SUMNER, N.M. | This small town in eastern New Mexico that was once a favorite of outlaw Billy the Kid has two museums, The Billy the Kid Museum and The Old Fort Sumner Museum, dedicated to the infamous bandit.

The Billy the Kid Museum is the result of one man’s love of history and collecting.

When Ed Sweet was a young man, he made his living selling fruit and vegetables to his neighbors in the area around Fort Sumner, N.M. As he traveled the area, Sweet kept an eye out for anything old that his customers might want to trade for his wares.

After many years of collecting antiques and historic artifacts – many of them associated with the area’s most famous outlaw – Ed and his wife Jewel opened a small museum in Fort Sumner in 1953.

Because of the artifacts and the town’s close association with the infamous outlaw, the Sweets named their museum The Billy the Kid Museum.

That small collection of artifacts has grown to a museum housing more than 60,000 relics associated with Billy the Kid. The museum remains

for this museum is the cemetery out back where Billy along with two of his pals are buried. Although there is a headstone for Billy, the exact location of the bandit’s body is unknown. Shortly after Billy’s burial, a flood washed away all the wooden markers in the cemetery so the current headstone is an educated guess. An iron cage around the burial site is to detour vandals who have stolen the headstone three times since 1950.

Fort Sumner is the perfect location for museums dedicated to the outlaw since Billy the Kid was a frequent visitor to the area.

Although Billy’s early history is clouded in mystery, it’s generally believed he was born William Henry McCarty around 1860 in a poor Irish neighborhood in New York City. To confuse matters even more he occasionally went by other names including William H. Bonney or

Tunstall was murdered in 1878 by a sheriff’s posse during the “Lincoln County War” and Billy set out to revenge his death. Billy ambushed the sheriff and his deputy and was eventually caught, tried and convicted to hang.

For Captan, the monthly classes – which cost about $200 and span two days – are partly altruistic and partly business. He sees the classes as way to serve a huge untapped market of fearful fliers who are desperate for help.

Some 60 million people are estimated to have some fear of flying. Half will not fly at all, or they find alternate means of travel, such as legendary football coach John Madden, who switched to traveling by bus or train after a panic attack on a flight.

Others are “white knucklers,” who resort to medication and therapy to cope with symptoms that can range from sweaty palms and sleepless nights to anxiety attacks.

The Saturday class drew a mix of about a dozen people: an elderly couple, a woman and her daughter, a single man and woman in

their 30s. They all sat in black leather seats next to “Gate 7,” where an overhead announcement reminded them to have their boarding passes ready.

Standing next to a screen showing flight times and a giant blueand-white mural of a jet, Nielsen shared his story.

A former Vietnam Air Force pilot and veteran commercial pilot, he began coaching fearful fliers in the late 1980s after he heard about a psychologist who was treating patients for flight phobia.

Over the next three hours, he and three volunteer pilots and an air traffic controller talked about aircraft engineering, maintenance, flight communications and what’s behind all the unusual noises that can unhinge some passengers. They explained the physics of turbulence – air molecules bumping into one another like “speed bumps in the air” – and how pilots are trained to deal with it.

“It’s my way of giving back, and I love to watch the transformation of people who come into this class and get beyond their fear of flying,” said Rick Metler, a United Airlines pilot for nearly 40 years.

Metler and other pilots sat with participants during an actual flight that several of them took the following day to Sacramento.
