We have been trying to sell our house for three months EDITH now — with LANK not a single offer. From our agent’s market analysis, we are at the low end of the price range for similar houses. We have even dropped the price with no effect.

Our house is relatively new (a little over two years).

I think lots of buyers drive by, but we hardly get any calls for showings.

What can we do to start getting some activity? We have never had any reason to believe we are overpriced. — M. and R. Answer: Anything will sell if the price is right.

Three months is a pretty long time to test this market, even through the winter and the school year. It seems clear to me that you do have plenty of reason to believe you are overpriced.

The answer is simple: The buying public does not think your home is worth what you’re asking for. No matter what the problem — and I can’t judge it from here —a lower price will always cure it.

I’ll bet you already knew you needed to drop the price again and were just hoping I’d say something different.

uestion: Dear Ed: I’m remodeling my kitchen and want to add a kitchen island area. But, we are tight on room and the island needs to be very narrow. A standard island sink may be ED DEL too wide. Do you have any GRANDE narrow sink suggestions I can look at?

- Patty, Utah Answer: Usually for a standard-size kitchen island, you can use a small bar sink. If even a bar sink may be too wide for your island, I do have a suggestion.

Some manufacturers offer long and narrow sinks called trough sinks. Like the name says, the rectangle shape does resemble a horse trough.

But don’t let the name fool you. These are beautiful high-end kitchen island prep sinks. Usually an under-counter installation, a trough-style sink may allow you to add a usable sink to your narrow countertop. Collect your final island measurements and work with your supply house to see if all will work out.

Bottom line: If you go with a trough sink, hopefully you won’t end up with a deserted sinkless island.

If you’re not sure if your deck needs to be resealed, sprinkle some water on the surface. If the water beads up, your sealant is still effective. If it seeps into the wood, you need to reseal the deck.

Every few years, hire a professional to perform a cleaning and sealing process. The money you pay will be well worth it for the extended lifespan of your deck.

A professional should use the correct power washing settings to avoid splintering the wood. Also make sure that they use cleaning chemicals that are recommended by the manufacturer for your particular type of wood.

Even if you don’t get it resealed,

a deck can use a good cleaning at least once per year. For smaller decks, you can do the work with a long-handled scrub brush. A larger deck will require a pressure washing job.

When you’re cleaning and sealing your deck, also consider restaining it. Wood stain loses color over time as it accumulates damage and debris. Removing the grime will restore some of the color, but after a few years, a new coat of stain will brighten it up.

ilien Tressemanes and Gustave Vogt joined together during the early 1880s to develop their decorating and exporting firm. In 1891, they began to produce their own high-quality porcelain in factories for marketing in the United States. In 1907, Tressemanes retired, and Vogt owned the business until it was sold in 1919.

Shaving mugs were popular from the late 1800s to around 1920. A plethora of mugs were produced for individuals in a variety of styles. Some were decorated with the name of

fraternal organizations or occupations; others were specifically made with the owner’s name and were kept at the barbershop.

Most were bought for use at home.

When to use dye or stain

‌D

ear James: I am planning to build some natural wood cabinets for my living room. I am trying to determine the JAMES most attracDULLEY tive method to finish the wood. Is it better to uses a stain or a dye? — Lori L. Dear Lori: There is nothing more beautiful than finely finished natural wood cabinets. You can purchase nice ones, but if you want the best handrubbed finish, do it yourself. Hand-finished cabinets are usually outside of most people’s budget constraints.

The answer to your “stain or dye” question depends upon the type of wood you are using and the finish you desire. In some situations, using both stain and dye can create the most attractive finish.

Also, the application pro-

cedure has a significant impact upon the final appearance of the wood surface.

Dyes are generally used to change the color of the wood or to create a unique surface effect.

Some dyes can give the wood surface a sense of depth, while others can create a weathered or antique appearance. The entire surface of the wood changes color with dye, so the grain is neither enhanced or diminished.

Dyes are made of microscopic particles that attach themselves to the wood fibers. Dyes are available as liquids or as powders which are mixed with solvents such as alcohol, water or oil-based chemicals. They are basically transparent, so all of the wood’s surface details show through.

Stains are made of colored pigments that stick in

the grains and pores on the wood surface. A binder, such as oil or acrylic, is used to hold them in place.

Unlike dyes, the pigment particles in stain build up in the grain, so it is enhanced. For this reason, stains create the greatest change in the appearance of open-grain woods such as ash and oak. They have less effect on maple.

If you are satisfied with the grain definition in the wood and just want to darken the color, then a dye is your best choice.

Also, if the wood surface has some scratches that are difficult to remove, dye is also effective. Using stain would make the scratches more apparent, just as it enhances the grain.

On the other hand, if the wood has a nicely finished surface and the grain can barely be seen, staining it should work well. Use a dark stain rather than

several coats of a lighter stain. The binder in stains is not extremely strong, and if it builds up from several coats, the top finish may not adhere well to the wood fibers.

For a stunning appearance, first apply a dye to color the wood and give it depth. Follow this with stain to enhance the grain and texture of the wood surface.

Always practice first on a sample piece of the same wood to determine how much to dilute the dye for the color you desire.

The general procedure is to prepare the wood surface with sandpaper. Rub on the dye per the manufacturer’s instructions. If you found the grain to be excessive on your sample, brush on a wash coat.

This is a thin coat of sealer — often, dewaxed shellac — to partially seal the grain. Next, work the

stain into the grain and wipe off the excess. Apply a protective topcoat of urethane, tung oil, etc.

Growth cycle, weather can affect tree pollen release ‌Q uestion: On the news, I have seen amazing pictures of the clouds of pine tree pollen in North Carolina. Why is there so much this JEFF spring? Is there RUGG something wrong with the trees?

Why are the trees producing so much pollen?

Answer: There is nothing wrong with the trees. There are many cycles of growth in nature, and sometimes they overlap.

Seven years ago, I was in North Carolina in mid-February, and the cars were covered in pollen.

From what I have read, this year’s pollen clouds are only as bad as the ones six years ago, so it is a

common occurrence that we just don’t remember or hear about very often.

Each year, plant growth shifts depending on the weather. Some trees release their pollen early and some later, but if the weather is cool for a while and then rapidly warms up, both sets of trees may release their pollen around the same time. What would have been spread out over time is now concentrated over a shorter time.

In order for a tree to produce a lot of pollen very early in the spring, it must have stored a lot of carbohydrates during the summer before. There hasn’t been enough warm weather for the trees to produce those carbohy-

drates this spring. With so much pollen in the air, the trees will probably produce a large number of pine cones this year. Some pine species take a couple of years to grow the cones to maturity.

Producing cones requires a lot of carbohydrates, so the trees will not produce as much pollen for the next couple of years.

Apparently, the pine trees in this area of the country require about six or seven years to cycle through the production of lots of cones. There will be an increase in the population of birds, mammals and insects that feed on pine seeds during this time.

This type of boom-and-bust cycle is common in nature. When

oak trees in an area go into a boom cycle, the population of deer and squirrels increases.

When the spruce trees in Canada go into a bust cycle, many bird species move south to the States to find food over the winter.

Many landscape and food crop plants are wind-pollinated, including all grasses, ash, cedar, corn, birches, broccoli, hickories, juniper, oaks, peas, pines, poplars, ragweed, rice, spruces and willow.

You will notice there are several plants on the list that cause allergies. None of these listed plants have showy flowers, but they do have other landscape benefits.

You might think that it is waste of energy for a tree to produce so

much pollen. That may be true, but the tree doesn’t have to produce flower petals, nectar or a fragrance, so there is a savings there.

It is not just wind-pollinated trees that go through boom-andbust cycles. It is common in fruit trees such as apple, crab apple, peach and pear. Fruit tree growers purposely thin out some of the developing fruit each year to prevent the tree from producing too much fruit in one year. Otherwise, the tree would produce too few the next year. A moderate amount each year is a better way to run the orchard.

room is truly like a lover. The more time and effort you put into creating the mood of your room, the more your room will love you back. As you may know, creating a mood

is sometimes not easy. There are many components that go into creating a moody room. Is it the perfect color of the walls, a unique work of art or the quality of the light entering the room? It is all of the above — and then lots more.

Have you ever entered a room and gotten goosebumps or an overall warm feeling? I liken this feeling to being in love. It’s a euphoric sensation that you can’t really explain. Is it magic? No, it’s usually the clear and thorough thought process of an individual who sat down to dream about their perfect room and put all the ingredients together.

Stylistically, rooms that are moody tend to be traditional or eclectic. I’m not saying there is anything wrong or unappealing about modern design, simply that a mix of styles tends to entertain the eye more than the clean lines of modern design. Moody rooms rely on layers of visual, tactile and even olfactory stimulation. To create the right mood, all the senses need to be considered.

Comfort is of utmost importance in creating a room that excites and relaxes you. The right seating for you and your

guest(s) can make or break a room. You should use seating that makes you want to never get up. Accessories and props such as pillows and blankets are de rigueur here. And having some tables will help your friends feel at ease, as they can use them for placing drinks or their handbags.

Your choice of music, flickering candles, a stack of magazines and wellplaced books all help in creating a warm room. As with all great experiences, don’t forget to add something unexpected. We all love good surprises. So get to work! Creating a mood is fun. The reward is that you and your visitors will love your space. As you see, every little detail contributes to a room’s mood. reating a tablescape is no easy feat. With all the options in material, size, color and on and on, it’s easy KATIE LAUGHRIDGE to get lost in the process. I know how blessed I am to have an amazing team beside me to help design fabulous tablescapes. I hope this inspires you to step outside of your comfort zone and take your tabletop to the next level.

Classic Blue and White You can never go wrong with a classic blue and white tablescape. Blue and white is a traditional and timeless look that can be adjusted for any season. Green topiaries add a touch of freshness and height to draw the eye upwards (and towards your no-doubt gorgeous centerpiece).

Why choose white? It’s the ultimate neutral

‌I

t seems like everything that’s old is new again.

Throughout interior design history, time and again, deJOSEPH PUBILLONES signers are faced with the request to create an all-white decorating scheme. An allwhite room can seem easy.

Doesn’t it? What could possibly be so difficult about putting the same color on everything in a room? Well, sorry to burst your design bubble, but monochromatic rooms — especially all-white rooms — often have a dozen or more shades of white.

Technically, white is the lightest color, but as an achromatic color, it has no specific hue. However, white can seemingly take on hints of other colors, as it reflects light and other items around

it. Therefore, it is normal to notice nuanced other colors in white, such as yellow, pink, green, blue and black.

White is the ultimate neutral. It can be paired with any other color for an upto-date color scheme. But for some, white is most powerful as a stand-alone color.

All-white decorating schemes can be beautiful, as they exemplify simplicity and elegance. For some, it is the holy grail of design, the ultimate chic interior design. This decorating scheme is quite flexible. It can serve as a good foil for antiques and contemporary furnishings with equal aplomb. It is effective as a clean backdrop for artwork, allowing each piece to seem to float in the room and letting the colors of each work of art and furnishing shine

on their own.

Many homeowners swear by an all-white kitchen or an all-white bathroom. These are classic schemes that can be highlighted by colorful accessories, such as kitchen canisters and equipment as well as colorful towels and bathmats.

It is important to note that all-white is not good everywhere. Light sources — both natural and from lighting fixtures — affect how the color reads. White also changes appearance depending on the finishes of a room’s surfaces. Shiny and glossy surfaces reflect light and help it bounce around, whereas matte surfaces will absorb almost any reflection.

White rooms, in order to create interest, rely heavily on textures, such as a fabric with a woven pattern. Also,

the grain of wood in a piece of furniture adds to its aesthetic appeal.

Sometimes, a white room can look a bit stark. A white room can be tamed by adding different shades of white and off-white, creating a warmer feeling. White can also be manipulated by adding soft shades of gray — from pale oyster white to more definitive pale grays.

White rooms are easy to accessorize and make changes to. This is part of their staying power. This classic design scheme is around to stay and is always interesting in its various iterations.
