Opening the pool for the summer The first time you open the pool, take great care to get the season off to a good start. First, remove water and debris from your pool cover. Use a pump or siphon to get rid of water, and a leaf rake or vacuum to get rid of leaves and large debris. After that, remove the cover and allow it to dry. Brush the walls with a pool surface cleaner prior to filling the pool. Inspect all the plugs and components of your filter system, then fill the pool. Then, start your filter system. Use a leaf rake or vacuum to get rid of any remaining debris. Finally, test your water to make sure it’s balanced and sanitized in accordance with your pool’s instructions. A professional pool cleaner can handle most of this work for you. You can also hire the pool pro to return at regular intervals over the summer. Depending on how often they visit, you can expect to pay between $75 and $200 per month. A pool pro’s primary responsibility is maintaining the correct chlorine pH level. Too much chlorine can cause skin rashes and respiratory problems. Too little, and bacteria can spread in the water. uestion: This is a photo of a clear glass, footed bowl. I had forgotten about it and found it while looking for a small bowl to serve raspberries. I bought it at an antique shop years ago just because it appealed to me, and I don’t know anything about its history. It is decorated with strawberANNE ries, blossoms, leaves and McCOLLAM vines and is in mint condition. The height is about 3 inches, the diameter is 5 inches, and there are mold marks on the base. I am hopeful you can tell me something about the maker, pattern, vintage and value.

available in clear, green, blue and purple. The Inverted Strawberry pattern can be found on candlesticks, footed bowls, table sets, jelly compotes, goblets, berry sets and covered powder jars. The intaglio pattern is depressed into the surface rather than raised. The words “Near Cut” and the letter “C” in a diamond were two of the Cambridge marks. “Near Cut” can be found on some examples of this pattern. The factory experienced a series of financial difficulties and passed through several owners. It closed in 1954 only to reopen again in 1955. By 1958, it was forced to close once more. In 1960, Imperial Glass Co. bought their molds. By 1984, an era of versatile glassmaking came to an end: Imperial Glass filed for bankruptcy and closed. Your footed bowl was made in the early 1900s and may be worth $25 to $50. Question: This mark is on the bottom of a teapot that was given to me by a friend who collects antiques. I always admired it when she served tea. When she was downsizing, she gave it to me as a memento of the good times we shared over a cup of tea. It is decorated with shiny brown glaze and a white overlay of classical figures. The spout, handle and lid are gold. I would appreciate learning more about my teapot. Answer: Gibson & Sons Ltd. made your teapot. They were in business from 1885 to about 1970 in Burslem, Stoke-onTrent, Staffordshire, England. Albany and Harvey were two of Gibson & Sons’ Staffordshire potteries. Your teapot was made around 1909 and would probably be worth $25 to $50. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. ear James: I am planning to sell my house, so I want to improve the landscaping. I think a small decorative bridge would look nice over a gully near the flower gardens. How should I build it, and what material is best? — Ron M. Dear Ron: Adding a bridge to JAMES your garden DULLEY — or any location in your backyard — can enhance the landscaping and give it a professional look. You might consider moving soil to create a gully in the flower garden itself so the bridge can be integrated into it. Use the dirt to fill in the existing gully. Another option is to install a pond under the bridge. With all the pond kits available at landscaping stores and home centers, installing a pond is not a major project. The most difficult part is digging the hole for the pond liner, especially if you have
hard clay soil. You really have two viable material options: pressure-treated lumber and vinyl. Using pressure-treated lumber offers the greatest design flexibility, particularly if you plan to build a decorative bridge. Vinyl materials, used for decks, can be used to build a flat bridge with a straight railing. Since you indicated you would like a decorative bridge, select lumber as the primary building material. Arched bridges look the best, but building one requires a fairly high level of carpentry skills. Sticking with a flat bridge would be best. Adding a fancy railing will give the bridge a decorative appearance. Before buying the lumber and getting out the saw, do some planning. Determine how the bridge will be used. If it is strictly decorative, it will only have to support the weight of a person or two, so its If the bridge will be width is not critical. used to roll a lawn mower

the bridge’s width and its strength. You don’t want to build a flimsy bridge and then have it collapse when the new owners roll something heavy over it. Measure your garden tools and make the bridge at least 1 foot wider than the widest object you imagine will pass over it. Unless the bridge is extremely short, it would be wise to add vertical center supports on each side. These supports can be recessed from the edges so they are not noticeable. When building a (strictly) walking bridge, it is acceptable to have a step at both ends. This actually looks more decorative. Obviously, if you are planning to roll items over the bridge, the ends must be flush with the ground. For flush ends, use pavers or natural stone at either end so the lumber does not contact the soil. With your plan in hand, build the bridge in a manner similar to a
long, narrow deck. Keep in mind that the bridge will look much better if it is level along its length and width. Locate level beginning and ending points and stretch level strings between them. You can use a standard carpenter’s level to check across the width. For bridges less than 8 feet long, 2-by-8 joists on 16-inch centers (or less, to space them evenly) should be adequate. For bridges up to 12 feet long, use 2-by-10s, and for bridges up to 18 feet long, use 2-by-12s. Any longer than that and you should use an intermediate support beam. Yard waste: Not many good uses for pine cones
Q
uestion: I would like some suggestions for what to do with all the pine cones that fall in my yard from the pine trees (other than JEFF just burning RUGG them, which so far, I have never done). I don’t want them to make more trees. Have you got any suggestions? These are not the really attractive cones that can be used decoratively. They are just
ordinary, tight cones. Answer: About 20 of the nearly 120 species of pine trees develop seeds large enough to easily harvest and eat. Other species may have edible seeds, but they are too small or hard to harvest. Depending on what kind of pine trees you have, you may be able to harvest the seeds at the end of next summer. They will need to be harvested before the cones open. Green cones on the
ground are not mature and have no value — except in the compost pile, where they will slowly break down. Brown cones that are open have already released their seeds, but closed ones may still have seeds. The open cones can be used as mulch if piled up around the base of a tree or shrub. When stacked in an orderly manner, they can look good. Brown cones can be burned, but the resins in the cone may cause pops and sparks.
They can also coat chimneys with creosote. I have found that many pine cones are sticky with sap when first picked up off the ground. Before using the cones for an art project, the sticky sap problem will need to be solved. Place the cones on a paper towel, then place on a cookie sheet and put in an oven set to a low temperature (around 200 degrees Fahrenheit). After 15 minutes, the sap
will have hardened into a glossy varnish that isn’t sticky and looks very nice. You have to check the cones in the oven frequently. They will release a nice pine fragrance at first, but they can quickly turn dark brown and then black, while releasing a burnttree smell. Cones that are not sticky can be used in a variety of Christmas and holiday decorations. They can be slathered in suet or pea-
nut butter and birdseed to make a bird feeder. Dried cones can sometimes be crushed under foot or run through a chipper and turned into mulch, but there are not many good uses for large quantities of pine cones. It’s easy being green
G
reen is the color of tranquility, a soothing hue of spring. And regardless of Kermit the Frog’s hit song, it actually IS easy to be green. The color pairs so beautifully with blues, black and white, violets and KATIE LAUGHRIDGE pinks. It also happens to be one of my favorite colors of the moment. Green is appropriate any time of year— it can enhance freshness in the spring and add a deep richness during the holidays. Seeing all the different ways the rejuvenating hue has been incorporated into our decor has inspired me to share a few ways you can bring it into your home as well. Experiment with different tints and shades. There is no shortage of variations of green. There’s seafoam, kelly, emerald, jade, sage, pine...the list goes on. Whether earthy undertones or bright jewel, there is a shade of green for every home. Start small with pillows and accessories to find the vibrancy that works for your space, then build from there. Don’t be afraid to use multiple shades and patterns. Use a variety of textures. From rich velvets to light cottons and seemingly endless patterns, fabric combinations are limit-
less. And when it comes to green, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Thankfully, you don’t have to. I love to mix textures. While some might stay away from big statement pieces, the bold go big. My current obsession is a deep, emerald green velvet sofa that brings elegance and depth. We have paired it with contrasting white and soft green floral printed pillows to add spring flair for the season. Come winter, switching those pillows out for gold or plaid accents will transition the piece into the holidays. Velvet can be a year-round textile. Freshen up with greenery. Yes, I love florals, but there is something to be said for a beautiful bouquet made up entirely of greenery. It is astonishing how much depth and texture you can create with a handful of different stems. It can be a high impact design that is surprisingly simple. Dress it up with a fun container for extra flair. Incorporate color at all levels. When done strategically, it is hard to have too much of one color. If you work at creating focal points and use these tips, you will be able to continue building on your favorite color. One of our current rooms displays just that. We also love using green as a wall color, either with paint or a green-themed gallery wall of delicate botanicals. Replace a shower mixing valve
D
ear James: Whenever one of the kids flushes a toilet while I am showering, the water gets very hot. Would installing a new type of shower valve help, and can you give me some do-it-yourself tips? — Melissa B. Dear Melissa: This is a very common problem when your bathtub has the old two-handle JAMES DULLEY (hot and cold) shower valve. When a toilet is flushed or the cold water faucet in the kitchen is opened, the pressure drops on the cold water side. This changes the shower water mixture, allowing much more hot water into it. The simplest solution to
this problem is to install a single-handle shower mixing valve with a pressure-balancing feature. The valve is designed such that if the cold or hot water pressure drops, the mixture remains relatively balanced. You may still feel a slight change, but it will not be uncomfortable. Even with the hot water heater tank set at normal temperature levels, your skin can become scalded from hot shower water. This is a more serious problem with elderly people. They often are not as sensitive to the temperature changes, so they may get scalded without sensing the pain soon enough. If you can solder a copper pipe, you should be able to install
a pressure-balancing mixing valve yourself. A decent-quality valve will cost about $125. The most difficult aspect of this project will be gaining access to the old valve inside the wall. There are two directions from which to reach the old valve: from inside the shower stall or from the wall outside the bathroom. If you have access to the wall outside the shower, cut through the drywall to get to the valve. If you make a careful cut, you should be able to replace the same piece of drywall when you are done. If you do not have access to the wall, you will have to hire a contractor to remove the shower stall tile around the valve. Unless you are experienced with tile,
don’t try this yourself, or you will likely break some of the tiles. When you are done, replacing the tiles and grouting them is not difficult. Remove the knobs and pry off the cover plates in the shower. Be careful not to damage the tile. If you plan to use the same tub spout again, wrap it with a thick cloth and carefully unscrew it using adjustable pliers. Make the opening in the wall. Use a tubing cutter to cut the copper hot and cold water supply lines and the pipes to the spout and the showerhead. There often is very little depth to work in, so use a minicutter. Ridgid makes an inexpensive one that you can find at most home center stores. Cut the two

Fit the new valve in place and measure the lengths of pipe you will need to connect it to the existing plumbing. Dry fit it all together first before doing any soldering. If everything fits properly, remove it and sand all the mating copper surfaces. Apply flux, assemble it and solder the joints. Install a large chrome cover plate, sometimes called a goof plate, over the tile to cover the two old handle holes.
