RIGHT SIZE, RIGHT TIME FOR PRIMGHAR RESIDENTS

PRIMGHAR, Iowa | Don and Ila Magnussen lived in an apartment in Cherokee, Iowa, for six months in 1953. They moved to a farm 13 miles south of Primghar in November of that year. And they had been there, on the farm in Liberty Township, ever since, some 63 years.

That was, until they relocated to Primghar on April Fools Day in 2016. In doing so, the couple went from a 2-story, 3-bedroom home on a 10-acre farmstead to 1,600 square feet, their half of a new duplex built a half-block west of the Primghar Golf & Country Club complex.

“It was an adjustment,” Don Magnussen said. “That’s the truth: I had to adjust to living here.”

He and Ila are glad they did. They have a grandson and his wife now residing on the farm. And the Magnussens are very much at home in a duplex that’s comprised of a large kitchen, living room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a deck, a two-car garage, and this key feature: Zero steps.

“It was certainly the right time for us,” Ila said, finding agreement with her husband. “This really suits our needs, no longer having to carry things like laundry up and down the stairs.”

Something, or someone, else also suits the needs of the Magnussens: Their next-door neighbor and fellow duplex owner, Marian Ginger, a Sutherland, Iowa, native and longtime resident of Primghar.

“You could say our banker married us,” Don Magnussen said of Ginger, who lives on the west half of the duplex. “Ila 4

and I didn’t know Marian before this process started. But, everyone we spoke with in Primghar had nothing but the highest praise for her. You know, they were all telling the truth.”

The comment brought a smile to Ginger’s face. Marian, for her part, is pleased the duplex idea turned out so well.

“To me, this makes a very nice retirement home,” said Ginger, who, since 1961, had resided on the south side of Primghar in an older two-story, threebedroom home. “I could still carry my laundry up and down, but you have to be realistic. This makes more sense.”

The duplex idea came about a year or so after another residential development concept just to the north of Second Street Northeast failed to take off. It led Ginger to investigate the possibility of living in a duplex. Rodd Holtkamp, senior vice president and trust officer at Savings Bank in Primghar, worked with Ginger and introduced her to the Magnussens, who were searching for something similar. A friend of Marian’s had gone to high school with Don. Brad Smith and Jonathon “Bubba” Hinz of S&H Land Partnership in Primghar had constructed a similar duplex in the Iowa Great Lakes. Smith and Hinz, who owned a lot west of the golf course, presented that blueprint to Ginger and the Magnussens in 2015 and allowed the three of them to make some modifications. Their first meeting occurred in Ginger’s home.

“The duplex they had built at the Lakes had a basement,” Ila Magnussen said. “Our duplex doesn’t have a basement.”

Instead, Ginger said, there is a safe room in each garage, a room containing utilities that also functions as a storm shelter. Additionally, the Magnussens and Ginger asked the builders to add six feet to both sides of each duplex, thereby allowing space for two doors serving each two-car garage. The space also allowed for a larger kitchen and dining area.

After the builders presented plans, the Magnussens and Ginger discussed items like kitchen cabinets and color combinations. They found agreement almost immediately on every facet.

There are a few changes, however.

The Magnussens, for example, opted for hardwood floors in the living room and kitchen. Ginger went with carpet in her living room and vinyl tile in a kitchen that, in her case, features a large kitchen island.

leading to the deck, or patio, the Magnusses opted to put a fireplace in that space.

“We had a fireplace the past 25 years on the farm,” Ila Magnussen said. “I wanted to make sure we had one here.”

Both sides of the duplex feature heated floors and two furnace units.

The building effort came about quickly as the couples gave their final go-ahead for the duplex in November 2015. The Magnussens, who had to be off the farm by April 2016, made their deadline and moved in on April 1, 2016.

Ginger moved in to her side six weeks later, allowing workers to put the final touches on her new home. The location in Primghar allows Don Magnussen,

an avid golfer, to drive his cart about 200 yards to the Primghar Golf & Country Club, a site whose course was named Iowa’s 9-hole Course of the Year in 1990 by the Iowa Golf Association. (Don also plays golf in nearby Paullina and Sanborn.) The clubhouse is where Ila meets a group of women each week for a friendly game of poker.

And while they’ve relocated, the Magnussens have made many friends and can still get to the farm whenever they wish. Don, in fact, will help do field work during the 2017 crop season. He’s also picking asparagus, an activity, he laughs, that helps him keep his hands in agriculture.

Ginger, for her part, has found the new neighbors and neighborhood to her liking. An avid daily walker, Ginger moves easily throughout town, making regular meetings at the Primghar Public

Library, where she serves as treasurer, and at the Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital and the Primghar Mercy Medical Clinic, where she serves with the auxiliary unit.

Art can be a part of a gallery but it can also be enjoyed in a much more natural setting.

The 24th annual ArtSplash will be coming to Riverside Park on Sept. 2 - 3 for a show that celebrates the Midwest art scene.

“It’s a misconception that planning ArtSplash occurs a couple of months ahead of time,” Sioux City Art Center development coordinator Erin Webber-Dreeszen explained. “Instead, we begin the planning process immediately after the last one.”

A veteran of the past six ArtSplash festivals, Webber-Dreeszen said it is very important to evolve and change to keep things fresh.

“We still have a great reputation in the exhibiting artist community all across the country and that is very important to us at the Art Center,” she said.

Art shows are also an important way for artists to showcase their work.

“For the exhibiting artist

community, having access to festivals is essential to finding an audience for their artwork,” Webber-Dreeszen explained. “This has changed slightly in recent years with the advent of social media platforms like Etsy and Pinterest, but there is still the need to experience art in a setting where you can take it all in and be with the actual artwork.”

OK, let’s talk numbers. How many artists exhibit their work at ArtSplash and how many people attended the two-day festival? If 2016 is any indication, there are a lot of art lovers out there.

“Last year, we had 83 exhibiting artist and an estimated attendance of 15,000 festival guests,” WebberDreeszen said. “Every year, we are grateful to have that many people spend their Labor Day weekend with us. If there’s anything the Art Center knows how to do, it’s celebrate.”

That’s what you find in learning the story of the legendary Bob’s Drive-In, an institution built on tasty food and family service, at the intersection of Highways 3 and 75 in Le Mars.

Myles Kass expanded the operation to include Bob’s at the Park at Arnolds Park some 14 years ago. Myles Kass died in June, ending a four-year battle with esophageal cancer.

Nate Kass, who, like his six siblings, grew up working hard at the eatery in hopes of attracting and keeping customers who left the drive-in full and satisfied.

“Basically, our claim to fame is that we’ve got this natural casing hot dog on a locally baked bun, and then we’ve got this extra lean ground beef sandwich that we brown, we strain and we fresh cook in a sauce and strain it again,” Myles Kass explained three years ago. “So if we talk about health food, we’ve been doing health food for 65 years.”

Myles Kass went on to say that the crispy-cooked fries at Bob’s were the best in the business, able to stay crispy even in milk.

“It’s the same with our onion rings,” he added. “It’s like if we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it correctly.”

Tyler Flammang was always intrigued by the large birds of prey he saw when growing up on his family’s acreage near Lawton, Iowa.

“Seeing the birds flying overhead represented absolute freedom for me,” he said. “There was always something majestic about them” Flammang didn’t know at the time that he would someday become a resource naturalist for the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, 4500 Sioux River Road.

“I get to work with the Nature Center’s birds of prey every day,” he said, noting that he cares for Skye, an American kestrel; Scarlet, a red-tailed hawk; and Olaf, a barred owl.

All three birds were injured in the wild and rehabilitated through Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR), an organization that Flammang had worked in the past.

Olaf, an owl that suffered a wing injury after being hit by a car nearly three years ago, will spend the rest of his life as an educational bird.

Indeed, the easy-going owl is something of a celebrity at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center.

“Olaf gets plenty of oohs and ahhs since few people get the opportunity to see an owl up close and personal,” Flammang said.

Well, we don’t know about that.

Summer is a perfect time to see critters (both feathered and furry) at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center.

The center’s hours are from 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and 1 - 4:30 p.m. Sundays.

For the month of July, they will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., every Thursday.

Consider this your “caw” of action to see a bird of prey in a very natural environment. And if you see Olaf, chances are Flammang will also be nearby.

Seaman, the Newfoundland dog who became a trusted member of the Corps of Discovery Expedition, would certainly be proud that Sioux City’s Lewis and Clark Dog Park is named after his two explorer masters.

Nestled inside of Bacon Creek Park at 5015 Correctionville Road, canines and their human companions can wile away a summer afternoon in a very picturesque setting.

Dogs from across the Missouri River also have a park with a significant local pedigree.

Located at 1101 Foundry Road in South Sioux City, the John Dounagdara Memorial War Dog Park was named after a U.S. Navy Master at Arms Petty Officer First Class who was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in 2011.

So what was Dounagdara’s connection to dogs? He was a dog trainer who was handling a dog for the Navy SEALS at the time of his death.

Which only goes to prove that man’s best friend is a dog. And it’s safe to assume the feeling is mutual.

If you build it, they will come.

And if you trap them in a room, they will solve a series of riddles before making a great escape.

That’s the premise behind The Greatest Escape, a 2540 Glenn Ave., business which advertises itself as being Sioux City’s first escape room.

According to co-owner Sami Garrison, participants have an hour to use their wits, skills and intellect to solve puzzles, crack codes and find keys that will ultimately allow them to escape three deceptively-decorated rooms.

The first room – set inside a posh apartment and known as “The Hostage” – will put you inside a John Le Carre type of thriller.

Room number two – known as “The Pirate ship” – gives you a chance to get your sea legs in a Jack Sparrow sort of way.

And the third room is called “The Cannibal’s Cabin.” We don’t know much about it. But if somebody offers you an hors d’oeuvre, it might be safe to pass on it.

“I think this would be perfect for children wanting something to do on the weekends or bachelorettes looking for a very nontraditional type of party,” Garrison said. “I can even see corporations using this as a team-building activity.”

After all, what says togetherness better than being locked in the same room while you’re conspiring to get out.

Most Siouxland locals refer to it as “the big pencil,” but the U.S. Department of Interiors refers to it as the first national historic landmark. It has been more than a century since the construction of Sergeant Floyd Monument was completed. One hundred sixteen years to be exact.

“It’s like the Statue of Liberty in New York; visitors make the journey to see it, but a lot of local people haven’t visited it. The monument is very special to Sioux City,” says Bev Hinds, one of Sioux City’s go-to history buffs.

“I don’t call myself a historian; I am a purveyor of history,” says Hinds.” I tell the story.”

Hinds calls her late husband the “true history buff.” Dr. V. Strode Hinds served as president of the National Lewis & Clark Trail Historical Foundation. After his passing, the plaza around the monument was named in his honor in 1997. “He was buried in Clear Lake, Iowa, so I like to go up to the monument to mutter at him sometimes.”

Hinds certainly does more than just telling the story of Sgt. Charles Floyd and his monument; through Hinds’ passion for history and personal connection with the monument, she helps the landmark thrive. Every August, Hinds speaks at a memorial service for Floyd held at the monument.

“It’s always a nice program.”

This year’s service will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 19.

Hinds also tends to the monument’s visitors registrar. “I swing by at least every 10 days and make sure everything is in good shape.” Besides occasional vandalism on the registrar or benches, Hinds says there isn’t much she needs to take of. “The Parks Department keeps it in good shape.”

Kelly Bach, parks maintenance field supervisor of Sioux City, says the monument is more low maintenance than most of the 59 parks in Sioux City he tends to. “Each park has its different needs. Sometimes some parks require more attention than others.”

Recently, Cone Park and Pearl Park have taken up a good amount of Bach’s time because they’re in the planning and construction phases.

“Grandview takes up a lot of time because so many events are held there.”

Besides bathroom maintenance and mowing, Bach says, the lights at Sgt. Floyd Monument require a good amount of maintenance. Bach says the city is looking to upgrade the lights around the monument to more energy-efficient lighting soon.

“Restorations to the monument haven’t been made since 1997. We’re at the point where there are a few areas that will need additional restoration soon,” Bach says.

Sgt. Floyd Monument is open daily, at no charge. It is located on the east side of South Lewis Boulevard/U.S. Highway 75 south of Glenn Ave.

OKOBOJI, Iowa | Northwest Iowa’s tourism hot spot, Dickinson County, needs all sorts of cool blue in creating a map, indicating the natural glacial lakes that bring hundreds of thousands of funseekers here each year.

Start with West Lake Okoboji, the deepest natural lake in Iowa with its maximum depth of 138 feet. The Wisconsin glacier formed West Lake around 14,000 years ago.

Big Spirit Lake, Little Spirit Lake, East Lake Okoboji, Upper Gar Lake, Lower Gar Lake and Lake Minnewashta complement West Lake Okoboji, their big cousin. Just 12 miles west along Highway 9 stands Silver Lake, on the west side of Lake Park, Iowa.

The Dickinson County cities of Arnolds Park, Lake Park, Milford, Okoboji,

Spirit Lake, Terril, Wahpeton and West Okoboji range in size from around 5,000 (Spirit Lake) to 300 (West Okoboji). They embrace these bodies of blue water and what they mean to the quality of life for those who choose to live here or visit.

Year-round, the Dickinson County population is just north of 16,000. By the peak of the summer, on July 4, that figure grows well beyond an estimated 120,000 people.

Some come for the stability work offers through a variety of homegrown manufacturing outlets. Others offer their wares and services seasonally, targeting that surging population base during spring and summer, giving rise to Arnolds Park Amusement Park and the nation’s seventh-oldest roller coaster, The Legend.

renovation of a Siouxland entertainment staple, the Roof Garden Ballroom, while expanding the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum and more, part of a $12-million upgrade.

An anonymous group of donors has already pledged $6 million to the Restore the Park campaign, which builds upon the effort 18 years ago to “Save the Park.”

The second phase commences this fall with the expansion of The Maritime Museum and renovation of The Majestic Pavilion, which will include new flooring for the former skating rink and more.

A new home for The Iowa Rock-n-Roll Museum will also be realized in this effort.

LE MARS, Iowa | I is for Ice Cream.

So say the tens of thousands of visitors who make their way annually to Le Mars, “Ice Cream Capital of the World.”

A visitor from Nebraska, for example, pulled into Le Mars on her way to the Twin Cities. A check of Google Maps showed the traveler would have saved time, perhaps up to 40 minutes, by taking Interstate 80 to Interstate 35.

That route, however, didn’t feature a stop in Le Mars, where the driver found her favorite: Just Peachy Ice Cream served at the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor and Museum, a 6-year-old visitors center devoted to the story and outstanding tastes served by Wells Enterprises, makers of Blue Bunny ice cream and frozen novelties.

The parlor/museum is located within a historic building on Central Avenue in downtown Le Mars, an 1875 2-story brick structure said to be among the oldest business sites in western Iowa, having served as a hardware and farm equipment outlet before becoming an auto dealership.

A centerpiece, or focal point, might be the marble bar, which came from M&M Bakery & Cafe in O’Neill, Nebraska.

A video detailing the story of founder Harry C. Wells and how he founded Wells Dairy with a horse, wagon and milk route in 1913. On display is a contact Wells signed for a milk route on Oct. 24, 1913.

That route gave rise to the largest employer in Le Mars, a maker of Blue Bunny ice cream and frozen novelties, and a force in the frozen treats trade.

The gorgeous parlor, which measures 12,000 square feet, has a grand, open staircase allowing guests to access a second-floor party room that holds up to 130 people.

The Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor isn’t simply a magnet for travelers from places like Lincoln, Nebraska, or Sioux City. It has also welcomed dessert lovers from

all over the world, even President Barack Obama, who scooped up a dish of mint chip ice cream. His opponent meantime, Republican Mitt Romney, enjoyed a chocolate malt.

Other U.S. leaders who have found their way to this “cool” stop in the “Ice Cream Capital of the World,” have included Vice President Joe Biden, Sens.

John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie and more.

LAUNCHPAD TEACHES MORE THAN FUN

Coring an apple is, at least, a two-tothree person operation.

That’s the lesson Ava DuBois, 5, and Riley Roder, 7, discovered the hard way.

The Sioux City girls were attempting to use a peeler on a particularly uncooperative apple.

“We were going one way but the apple went the other way,” Ava said, picking up the Red Delicious off of the floor.

Luckily, LaunchPAD Children’s Museum discover guide Sara Bunker came to the rescue.

“You have to make sure the corer is right on top of the apple,” she said, achieving some amazing apple peeling acuity.

“That way, you’ll get a perfect cut every time.”

It seems like Bunker has the golden touch when it comes to slicing and dicing produce but the Plattsmouth, Nebraska, native’s true expertise comes in teaching kids to cook.

Ava, Riley and approximately a dozen other children, ages 5 - 8, were students in a Kitchen Chemistry class that Bunker was teaching at LaunchPAD’s 623 Pearl St., facilities.

“When I was a kid, I had a terrible diet,” Bunker admitted. “However, as a an adult, I consider myself a but of a ‘foodie.’

I’m teaching this class because I wanted to share my love of healthy eating when children are the most receptive of the subject.”

Specifically, Bunker wants her students to know where their food comes from.

From planting pumpkin and sunflower seeds in pots of dirt to mastering simple recipes, she wants to turn the enthusiastic bunch of kids into “Master Chefs”-in-themaking.

It looked like Sebastian Pratt, 7, has some Gordon Ramsay-level skills going on.

Well, at least, he had no issue coring the multiple apples that will be used in Bunker’s applesauce recipe.

“This is a lot of fun,” the Sioux City boy said, scooping goop away from the peeler.

“Boy, apples have a bunch of seeds.”

Yet, Bunker quickly pointed out that apple seeds are edible.

“Do you know what other fruit has seeds we can eat?” she asked her culinary kids. “Tomatoes have seeds we can eat.”

That thought proved perplexing for Ashlie Rehal, 8, who was working under the assumption that tomatoes were veggies, not fruits.

“No. Tomatoes are definitely fruit,” Bunker said to a still not completely convinced Ashlie.

Well, if this fruity factoid wasn’t fodder for some foodie fact-finding, perhaps this additional noshy nugget of news will blow the minds of our young “Iron Chefs.”

“OK, kids, what live fungi do we put in breads and cakes?” Bunker asked.

If you said the correct answer is yeast (aka “Saccharomyces Cerevisiae” or sugar-eating fungus), then pat yourself on the back.

Indeed, LaunchPAD’s young kitchen chemists conducted an experiment utilizing yeast.

Mia DuBois, 7, added yeast to a plastic bottle containing a teaspoon of sugar and a slug of warm water. The Sioux City girl placed a balloon on top of the bottle, swirled the bottle around for a bit and, then, waited a few minutes.

“That’s cool,” Mia said, liking the result of her experiment.

In fact, she’d like to conduct a similar experiment when she grows up.

“I’d like to become a teacher some day,” Mia said with certainty.

Her LaunchPAD classmate, Bennett Hartman, 4, of Sioux City, has very different adult aspirations.

“I want to become a scientist when I grow up,” he said.

Wait, a food scientist, by chance?

“Nope,” Bennett answered. “I wanna be a bug scientist. I wanna work with bugs.”

Anchored to sidewalks and concrete paths throughout downtown Sioux City, is a towering giraffe made of stainless steel forks and other utensils and two bronze boys playing football, as well as sculptures that are geometric and abstract in form.

Eight new sculptures are on display during Sculpt Siouxland, a year-long exhibition that seeks to promote public art and increase downtown foot traffic.

Sioux City Art Center curator Todd Behrens said stainless steel is a favorite medium for outdoor sculptures because of its ability to withstand the elements.

“If we bring in a large number of pieces of stainless steel, it starts to become kind of dull with everything having the same finish. What’s kind of fun this year is that within those steel pieces, there’s a lot of variety,” said Behrens, who thinks the 10-and-a-half-foot-tall giraffe, “Out of Africa,” which was sculpted by Dale Lewis, of Hastings, Minnesota, will be a favorite of onlookers.

Some of the steel sculptures are painted. “Bird #4” by artist William Lieb, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, has a component that spins. “Duo Forward,” a 12-foot-tall sculpture by Leslie Bruning, of Omaha, Nebraska, is part of “Vector Series,”pieces which use four carefully defined linear forms that fit in a rectangular format, two which have straight edge architectural qualities and two that have curved organic qualities. Behrens said the sculpture

required a machine to raise it up vertically and safely put it into place in front of the Art Center’s entrance.

Breandan Donahue, Sculpt Siouxland president, said he hopes residents and visitors alike take the time to view the sculptures and appreciate what downtown Sioux City has to offer.

“There’s some really nice artwork down there that will give you an excuse to walk around and see what we’re doing in the area and what the area’s also doing with new businesses coming in,” he said. “We want to keep drawing high-quality works of art into the area. Hopefully it expands as the downtown area does.”

Al Harris-Fernandez, Art Center director, said the feedback he has received from the project has been very positive. He said the sculptures are larger and more visible than ever.

“I think any downtown that has a lot of public artworks is a more interesting place to visit and walk around in,” he said.

BIGGER AND BETTER Members of the Sioux City Growth Organization (SCGO), a community of young professionals, founded Sculpt Siouxland in 2005 after recognizing the need for diverse attractions downtown.

The project’s goal was to increase foot traffic through the downtown area, Bird #4 as well educate and promote Artist: William Lieb interactive art. That first Location: Fourth and Pierce year, the exhibit included 13 streets

First Impressions Count Clean your house top to bottom including walls, floors, furniture and tabletops. Take a long, hard look at your home from the street. Does it have curb appeal? Is it warm, inviting and well-kept? Make sure by mowing the lawn, weeding garden areas, trimming unruly bushes, resealing the driveway and sweeping the porch. Pay particular attention to your front door and repaint it if necessary.

Don’t Burden the Buyer with Repairs If there are problem areas in your home, get them fixed before the showing. When prospective buyers tour the house and see leak stains on the ceiling or peeling paint, they will also see future work and assume

that bigger maintenance and repair issues are lurking behind those small problems.

This is particularly true in kitchens and bathrooms, which are often the two rooms that make or break a sale.

If your home’s appliances, like the dishwasher, oven, refrigerator and washer and dryer, are old and outdated, it could pay to replace them. Shiny, new appliances already in place will be a big selling point.

“There’s a lot of studies that show that having public art in downtown gets people out of their cars and walking around and then they end up spending more money in the area,” Harris-Fernandez said. “There’s more of an attraction to go downtown in the first place.”

Eventually, Harris-Fernandez said SCGO members decided to make the project a nonprofit of its own. The Sioux City Art Center first became involved as a consultant and then as a board member of the new nonprofit. Three years ago, the Art Center became a partner in Sculpt Siouxland, handling the artistic-administrative part of the project. “(Sculpt Siouxland) started off by attracting a lot of small figurative sculptures,” Harris-Fernandez said. “When we got involved, we thought, ‘Let’s go after larger sculptures that have higher visibility so that not only walking, but just driving through you’d notice a lot more sculptures.’ ” Each year, Harris-Fernandez said calls for submissions are sent to a large mailing list of area artists and to college and university art departments. He said information about the project is also posted on the Art Center’s website.

A jury composed of Sculpt Siouxland, Art Center board members and outside artists selects the artists who will display their works for a one-year period. Donahue said the jury is looking for high-quality work that is diverse.

“There are structural components like, ‘Is it going to hold up outside? Are they going to have an ability to place this somewhere safely?’” he said. “General aesthetic appeal kind of changes from one jury member to the next.”

Harris-Fernandez said the jury also invites an invitational artist to submit a sculpture that has been pre-selected, with the goal of Sculpt Siouxland purchasing that work of art with the money the nonprofit and other foundations have raised.

“Sometimes we get less, but we get higher quality (submissions). Sometimes we get more and also higher quality. It depends on each year,” said Harris-Fernandez, who said the artist honorarium was recently raised from $1,000 to $1,500.

When he was a child growing up in Hyattsville, Maryland, Steve Elliott built with any materials he could find, including blocks, scrap materials and cardboard. He also enjoyed drawing portraits of people.

“I’ve always been involved with building, but not so much in the sense of what I would call art – more with construction and play. I think that desire to build is what prompted me to move into the sculpture realm,” the 42-year-old, who has been a sculptor for 20 years, said, standing near the intersection of Fourth and Jackson streets on a balmy June afternoon.

Elliott, who is vice president of academic affairs at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, was installing his more than 7-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture, appropriately named, “Intersection.” The intricate geometric structure, which was selected for Sculpt Siouxland’s 2017 exhibition, reflects his interest in the underlying patterns and structures within nature and architecture.

After serving a four-year active duty tour in the Marine Corps, Elliott earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Kansas and his master of fine arts degree from the University of Maryland. He said a career in the fine arts is a “challenging and time-consuming endeavor.”

“I started out in graphic design, then took a sculpting class and a metal smithing class and really fell in love with all of the tools and materials and the processes – the welding, braising and soldering,” said Elliott, who has also served as the dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Wayne State, as well as the college’s chair of the Department of Art and Design and director of the Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery.

It’s the design process involved in sculpture, taking a flat sheet of material and transforming it into something three-dimensional, that Elliott said he finds most intriguing. He said his life

experiences inspire him to create art.

“I’m really interested in architecture.

I think I’m really inspired by design,” said Elliott, who considers Romanian sculptor, painter and photographer Constantin Brâncusi among his favorite artists. Brâncusi, who is recognized as “the father of modern sculpture,” is known worldwide for his simple, abstract forms.

Elliott works on his sculptures in his home studio in Wayne. Depending on the size of the piece, a sculpture can take him anywhere from three weeks to three months to complete. Weight, gravity, wind resistance and the archival aspects of stainless steel, all factored into “Intersection.”

“This was actually an experiment in transparent material,” he said. “As I was really starting to get into outdoor sculpture, I was looking at ways to minimize wind drag, especially in the Midwestern climate. Large pieces can really tend to take on the wind. That was one thing I really wanted to tackle with this.”

Elliott’s works have been included in more than 80 exhibitions and collaborations in 26 states. He was among 13 28

artists chosen to display a sculpture at the inaugural Sculpt Siouxland in 2005.

He said the exhibition of “Intersection” marks his eighth or ninth year participating in the public art project.

“It’s an opportunity to exhibit outdoor work – that’s really been a passion of mine,” he said. “I’ve been involved in outdoor exhibits for probably going on 10 or 12 years now all around the country.”

Elliott said Sculpt Siouxland offers a great location for displaying artwork.

Some of his sculptures have also been purchased by local collectors who attend the Art Center’s events.

“A lot of my work right now has gravitated here,” said Elliott, who has two pieces in Sculpt Siouxland’s permanent collection and one on temporary lone.

“All of the large-scale pieces I have now that are still in circulation have come back here.”

Elliott said he hopes those who view “Intersection” take away an appreciation for form and design.

“It’s OK to stop and get out of your car and take a walk around downtown and actually slow down and look at the artwork that’s down here,” he said. “I think it’s a really nice exhibit.”

MAD FOR MUSIC SIOUX CITY SIZZLES WITH SUMMERTIME MUSIC FESTIVALS

It probably isn’t a surprise that Hard Rock Hotel & Casino entertainment manager Brad Streeter is an aficionado when it comes to summertime music festivals.

“There’s something special about going to a concert under the stars,” he said.

“I don’t know what it is, but music and summer just naturally go together.”

Siouxland music fans will certainly have a wide array of choices when it comes to music offerings this summer.

From classic rock to indie pop to tunes that are a bit more classical, you’ll have plenty of chances to tap your toes with a few hundred (or more than 25,000) of warm-weathered friends.

TRIPLE THE FUN AT SATURDAY IN THE PARK Most years there is one big “get” at Saturday in the Park.

But for the 27th year of Sioux City’s premiere outdoor summer festival, there are three big acts that can be considered headliners.

First of all, British soul singer Joss Stone will hitting the Grandview Park Band Shell July 1. However, there’s also the funk influenced Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and rising indie rock stars The Revivalists moving up the ranks when it comes to the “it” factor.

“Given the lay of how these bands developed since we booked them, (it’s) almost a triple headliner scenario,” Dave Bernstein said.

Bernstein knows a thing or two when it comes to landing A-list talent. Over the years, he and co-founder Adam Feiges have booked everyone from the Neville Brothers to Carlos Santana to Aretha Franklin to play Saturday in the Park.

But Bernstein said there are more music events springing up every year.

“I mean that’s our biggest challenge,” he said. “Competition is fierce.”

PATRIOTISM ON DISPLAY A Holiday Pops Concert featuring the U.S. Air Force Heartland of America Band will stir emotions at 8 p.m. July 4, while a quirky new kid’s tale (written by Sioux Cityan Diane Guhin Wooley) titled “UhOh!” comes to the Betty Ling Tsang series at 10 a.m., July 14.

This summer’s series will conclude with a 7 p.m., Aug. 4 production of “The Robber Bridegroom” (think of it as Robin

Hood, only set in America’s Deep South).

THE OTHER ATTRACTION While Saturday in the Park tends to send a greater number of people to Sioux City’s Grandview Park, it can’t hold a candle to the Sioux City Municipal Band.

Beginning with its inception as the Monahan Post Band in 1920, the Sioux City Municipal Band has given free Sunday night concerts every summer for countless generations of Siouxland residents.

If you hear music around in the streets of Sioux City, don’t be startled.

Instead, be grateful. The sound of live entertainment will be strong all summer long.

That’s the kind of description you get from Jim and Joyce Young, of Monroe, Michigan, who make a pit-stop (the letter “P” you see) at Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe every time they return to Sioux City.

“You can’t get Twin Bings in Michigan,” Joyce said. “Maybe writing a story about this will help.”

The Youngs, like tens of thousands of other current and former Sioux City residents, make sweet tracks to the shop at Wesley Parkway, an 11-year-old facility that features a sales floor, museum/ video wing, landing area and specialty shop. Former President Bill Clinton visited and satisfied his sweet-tooth after a November 2016 campaign stop in Sioux City.

On a recent June morning, Jon Sadler, manager at Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe, shook his head in disbelief at the dozens of customers roaming the sales floor.

“When it’s 90 degrees outside, we should not be this busy,” Sadler said, echoing comments he’s heard from those who work in his line of business.

“And yet, we’ve got 72 people stopping here today at 4 p.m.”

Sadler said the modern standard at Palmer’s took place when 150 customers showed up at the same time. Sadler did what he could to keep everyone happy; part of the group watched a 12-minute video detailing the history of the Palmer Candy Company, which was founded in 1878. The other half roamed the aisles, relaxed in the landing area (near antique chocolate-making machines) or browsed selections in the specialty shop.

“There are times when the parking lot is full and there’s not one Woodbury County license plate represented,” Sadler said.

This site, he contended, rates tops in Sioux City for hometown tourists.

The Youngs would agree. It’s a must for them to stop every time they return to their hometown. Other family members, they said, make that part of their standard operating procedure as well.

The Palmer Candy Company began in 1878 when a fire destroyed the dry goods store of Edward Cook Palmer in St. Joseph, Michigan. Rather than rebuilding,

Palmer packed up his family and moved to the blossoming frontier town of Sioux City. Palmer bought a wholesale grocery operation and with it came a fruit and confections line.

Palmer expanded the candy manufacturing end and began selling bulk and hard candy out of wooden containers in the back of their fruit house. In 1900, the company established a new location at

209 Douglas St. The firm reached a new level in 1923 with the introduction of Palmer Candy’s Bing candy bar, still a Midwest favorite.

Other expansions would follow resulting in production in two Sioux City factories and, in 2007, the relocation of Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe to a 1931 Art Deco building at 405 Wesley Parkway.

On a recent Tuesday, two buses rolled into Sioux City from Nebraska. Some 90 tourists stepped out for a tour once the units rolled up to the Queen of Peace, a centerpiece at Trinity Heights, at 33rd St. and Floyd Boulevard in Sioux City.

Sue Grieve, assistant to the executive director at Trinity Heights, noted that around 100,000 visitors stop here annually to attend Mass, receive confession, have a meeting, or simply stroll the grounds that became a Sioux City fixture on the campus of the former Trinity College and Trinity High School, facilities that would later serve as a

seminary until the mid-1960s.

Trinity Heights, the dream of the Rev. Harold Cooper, opened in 1992.

“We host visitors from many different countries,” Grieve added.

Unknown to planners – and perhaps by divine intervention – the 30-foot-tall Immaculate Heart of Mary Queen of Peace was placed precisely on the spot where the Trinity College Chapel had been located. It was dedicated in 1993 and began drawing visitors immediately.

Franciscan priests, and was later a high school, educating Catholic boys for 50 years. The aging buildings were razed in 1989 to make way for Trinity Heights, an 80-acre campus perched atop a hill near 33rd Street and Floyd Boulevard on Sioux City’s north side.

More than 100,000 visitors flock each year to the grounds, which offer more than two dozen shrines, memorial garden spots and quiet corners for prayer and reflection. While this place is Catholic in its theology, it remains ecumenical in intent and appeal.

The other dominant statue on the grounds is a 33-foot tall Sacred Heart of Jesus, which invited visitors to place their burdens at His feet. This statue presides over the “Outdoor Cathedral,” the Eight Beatitudes, St. Francis, shrines to the Blessed Virgin and a Veteran’s Memorial honoring loved ones who have served the U.S. military.

World-famous sculptor Dale Lamphere created the statues of Mary and Jesus.

Award-winning carver Jerry Traufler, of Le Mars, Iowa, used Leonardo da Vinci’s classic “Last Supper” as inspiration for a life-size wood carving of the Last Supper inside the St. Joseph Center at Trinity Heights. Traufler, who used local models for this creation, devoted seven years of his life to complete the basswood and pine project.

In addition to tours throughout the week, Mass and confession are observed three times per week at Divine Mercy Chapel, with Mass taking place at 11 a.m.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Confession occurs just before each Mass.

Mass cannot be observed on a daily basis here, as Trinity Heights is not a parish. Additionally, Mass may not be celebrated here on a holy day of obligation.

“People must go to their own parish on a holy day of obligation,” Grieve said.

The International Traveling Statue of Our Lady of Fatima came to Trinity Heights on June 1, six days prior to the start of the organization’s Summer Series which, this year, focuses on the Mystery of the Holy Rosary. The series concludes as Trinity Heights welcomes The Holy Relics of Our Lord’s Passion. Nine Relics, including pieces of the cross and pieces of the crown of thorns, will be on hand for visitors to see.

On Aug. 5, Trinity Heights Queen of Peace and the Diocese of Sioux City will hold a one-day Our Lady of Fatima Anniversary Conference at the Sioux City Convention Center. The Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of Fatima traveling statue will be on-hand for that conference as well.

Phil Claeys had a dream of turning River-Cade – one of Iowa’s largest and longest-lasting summer festivals – into a year-long spectacular.

“Why should we limited ourselves to a five-day event in July when we can keep the excitement going on throughout the year?” River-Cade’s longtime event coordinator asked.

True to his word, Claeys keeps adding activities to the event that got its start in 1964 as a way to celebrate the importance of the Missouri River to the region.

While the downtown parade, Merriam Midway Carnival, ice cream social and famous “Smile” contest will be held July 19 - 23, don’t be surprised to see such River-Cade-sanctioned activities as an amateur golf tournament (July 8 - 9); dance party (July 14); car show (July 15) taking place outside that window of time.

And that’s not to mention the 15th annual Riverssance Festival, a Renaissance Fair, taking place Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 or the cardboard races (traditionally

The iron horse that helped construct a modern America has had a home in Sioux City for nearly a century.

The Milwaukee Railroad complex, constructed in 1917 at 3400 Sioux River Road, first served as a repair and maintenance terminal for steam locomotives, passenger cars and cabooses on the Milwaukee Railroad line.

Now, the yard is a museum and testament to an earlier time in American history. The Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District houses the Great Northern steam locomotive No. 1355, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District itself is now vying for a position on the coveted register. The district claims to be one of only seven in the country that are left in such an excellent condition.

The district, which attracts around 50,000 visitors, has completed several projects in recent years, including a completed blacksmith and machine shop.

This exhibit allows visitors to investigate the inner workings of an operational steam engine and an ammonia compressor that were salvaged from an old Sioux City pork packaging plant.

W IS FOR WAR EAGLE MONUMENT If you’re looking for one of the best views Sioux City has to offer, make your way up to War Eagle Monument at sundown. Remembered as a lifelong advocate of harmony and camaraderie, War Eagle was buried at the top of the bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley.

Born around 1785, War Eagle was a riverboat guide on the upper Mississippi and delivered messages for the American Fur Company. Many lasting bonds were created between War Eagle and area American settlers, which set a tone of friendship that spread through the area. War Eagle received a silver medal from President Martin Van Buren in 1837 in honor of his work in Washington, D.C. to negotiate peace treaties.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. | Along the banks of the Missouri River, across from Sergeant Floyd Monument, 55 acres of land are dedicated to those who have sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.

Siouxland Freedom Park stands to ensure that those who’ve sacrificed will never be forgotten. The idea for the park came in Oct. 2007 after the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall replica “The Wall That Heals” drew more than 11,000 visitors. The positive reception inspired Freedom Park and gifted Siouxland with another special attraction.

South Sioux City’s Veterans Memorial Wall is the only replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall located in Washington, D.C. The 250-foot black granite half-scale wall is inscribed with over 58,000 names of soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. The wall was dedicated on May 28, 2014.

memorabilia illustrating the role of each branch of the military inside the pentagon-shaped Interpretive Center, designed by Matt Barstad. The center will also provide space for ceremonies and other traveling exhibits.

The John Douangdara Memorial War Dog Park opened in 2013 and has welcomed four-legged companions and their owners since. The park is named after U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class John Douangdara, who died on Aug. 6, 2011, when their helicopter crashed in Afghanistan. Douangdara handled a dog named Bart, who died with his master in the crash.

Future plans for the park include a laser light amphitheater, a family-friendly leisure space and walking trails.

Stay clear of swimming pools and splash pads this summer if you are experiencing diarrhea or vomiting or have an open wound.

Cases of recreational water illnesses (RWIs), which affect a person’s stomach and intestines, skin or respiratory system, have risen over the past 20 years, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with reports of of diarrhea-causing RWIs increasing by

as much as 200 percent since 2004.

Escherichia coli – A 2012 study of water samples collected from pool filters revealed that 58 percent of the samples tested were positive for E. coli, bacteria normally found in the human gut and feces. Some types of E. coli can cause symptoms of intestinal infection, including diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever.

More severe cases can lead to kidney failure and death.

Shigella – Shigella is a group of bacteria that cause shigellosis, a diarrheal disease. You can contract shigellosis by swimming in contaminated water.

Giardia – This microscopic parasite can survive up to 45 minutes in properly chlorinated pools and cause giardiasis, an infection of the small intestine.

organisms,” Lamptey explained. “When you get in and you happen to swallow the water, then it gets into your system.”

Public health officials from 32 states and Puerto Rico reported 90 recreational water-associated outbreaks for 2011 and 2012, the most recent years data was available, to the CDC’s Waterbourne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System.

Sixty-nine of the outbreaks involved treated recreational water. Of those cases, 36 were caused by cryptosporidium, a protozoan parasite highly resistant to chlorine; and 21 were caused by escherichia coli, a rod-shaped bacterium. In total, 1,788 people were sicked, 95 were hospitalized and one person died.

“You don’t need a large inoculum to contaminate the water and make people ill,” Lamptey said of cryptosporidium, a leading cause of RWIs. “Just a small amount, once it gets into the water, it can make lots and lots of people ill.

Individuals infected with RWIs experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Lamptey said occasionally some people break out with a rash called folliculitis or develop ear or respiratory tract infections. While the illness can be treated with antibiotics, Lamptey said

“It’s the immunosuppressed people (those with HIV or who are receiving chemotherapy) who tend to have a difficult time,” he said. “If you’re not very ill, sometimes it’s self-limiting and within a day or two you’re fine.”

Can you tell whether the water in a swimming pool is contaminated just by looking at it?

Lamptey said it’s impossible to know for sure. If the water looks dirty, he advises against swimming or wading in it.

“People who have swimming pools know how to take care of them in terms of chlorine and how much to put in,” he said. “Hotels and cruises know they have to be very careful so they don’t lose their business if there’s an outbreak. They pretty much do a good job of it.”

A revamped nutrition facts panel designed to make it easier for Americans to see how many calories and added sugars are in packaged foods and drinks is being delayed.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it plans to push back the deadline for a rule requiring food companies to use the new label. It’s the Trump administration’s latest delay of the Obama administration’s rules intended to improve food labeling and make foods healthier and safer.

The revised nutrition facts panel would make the calorie counts on packaged food and drinks more prominent, adjust serving sizes to be more realistic and specify the amount of added sugars in products. The labels currently list how many total sugars are in a product, including those that are naturally occurring, such as in fruit and milk.

Previously, the FDA had given companies until July 26, 2018, to comply, with smaller food makers getting an extra year. On Tuesday, the FDA said it intends to give companies additional time to be in compliance. It did not provide a specific deadline.

Spokeswoman Deborah Kotz said in an email that details will be released at a later date.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association and other industry groups had asked for the deadline to be pushed to 2021, according to a letter sent earlier this year to Health and Human 44

The letter was obtained by the health advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest.

In a statement, the Grocery Manufacturers Association said food and beverage companies want to help people make informed choices, but the “fastapproaching compliance deadline” was difficult to meet without final guidance from the FDA on certain details.

For instance, the association noted that the FDA still needs to evaluate whether some commonly used ingredients in food products can continue to be counted as fiber on the new panel.

Jim O’Hara, director of health promotion policy for CSPI, said the delay will only cause confusion as some companies switch to the new label as planned, ahead of others.

“The longer you draw this out, the more confusing the marketplace becomes,” he said.

Candy maker Mars Inc., for instance, said it is still planning to start rolling out the new nutrition facts panel on select products in coming months and be in full compliance by next year.

Spokesman Brad Figel noted that postponing the deadline for too long would result in there being two nutrition facts panels in the marketplace for an extended period of time. Still, he said he wasn’t surprised by the FDA’s decision.

“There’s just been a lot of pressure to extend the deadline,” Figel said.

The FDA also recently delayed a rule that would require restaurants and grocery and convenience store chains to post calorie counts for prepared foods.

That rule was supposed to go into effect last month, but was delayed until next year. That is also leading to inconsistency in what people see, since some businesses had already started posting the calorie counts in anticipation of the previous deadline.

The Agriculture Department has also delayed animal welfare standards for organic foods and sodium standards for federally subsidized school lunches.

I HAVE A HABIT OF

LOSING THINGS I LOSE THINGS. Papers, clothes, receipts and, mostly, keys.

I’ve torn the house apart so many times looking for keys I created a key station just to make sure that doesn’t happen. But you know how that goes: You unlock a door, the phone rings and the next thing you know you’ve forgotten where the keys are.

I’ve pawed through garbage more times than I care just looking for the stupid things.

Usually, they’re in a coat pocket, in a bag or on the wrong counter but that doesn’t stop me from digging through three bags of garbage filled with leftovers.

I’ve left them in the car, too, but I blame those occasions on the phone. If I’m too busy talking I don’t have the good sense to make sure I’m taking everything else with me.

The worst “where are they?” moment happened on Christmas Eve. I was certain I left my license on a coffee table and it somehow had gotten swept up in the wrapping paper. While others were entertaining visions of sugar plums, I was dancing in a dumpster, looking through an apartment building’s trash.

After an hour, I gave up, went back inside and plopped on the couch. There, between the cushions, was the license.

Socks never prompt a mad dash around the house – they’re usually stuck inside fitted sheets – but a misplaced TV remote can get me to clean the house faster than someone knocking at the door.

I’ve left papers for work at home and papers for home at work.

I’ve misplaced glasses, shoes and ties. And, I’ve spent more sleepless nights retracing steps just in case inspiration strikes.

I thought I’d been through the worst and, then, in May, I went to New York and lost my phone.

To back up – my sister and I went to a rather lackluster taping of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” and had to walk five blocks in pouring rain. To get out of the monsoon, we stopped at a shopping mall.

There, we split up and went our separate ways, determined to dry out.

I looked at pants, shirts, ties, shoes and suits. I tried on a suit and when the clerk said it made me look sexy, I decided to get it. (Talk about sucker for flattery.)

In no time at all, the tailor turned up, measured the pants and jacket and told me I was ready to go.

When I went to pay, I realized I didn’t have my cellphone.

Did I leave it in the dressing room?

I panicked, searched everywhere and told the clerk the news.

“Where else were you?” he asked.

The rest room, I remembered. So, before I even thought of paying, I went back to the mall facilities and searched every urinal and stall – except for one. I waited and got the strangest look from a man at a sink. “I lost my phone,” I tried to explain. “That’s harsh, man,” he said. “Good luck.”

I knew what he was thinking: “You are never, ever getting that thing back.”

When I finally got in the stall, it wasn’t there. I rushed back to the store and the clerk told me I should try calling the number.

Of course, I had no phone to do that. I also didn’t know my sister’s number because, um, it’s stored in the phone.

“Go to the customer service desk and report it,” the clerk said. “It may turn up.

I’ll try calling your phone.”

There, the woman was sympathetic, not hopeful. “Fill out these forms. Sometimes, they turn up. Not always. But sometimes.”

The clock was ticking and, soon, it was time to meet my sister at our designated spot.

When I told her the news, she said, “Why did you do something like that?”

The phone didn’t just have her number, it included all of my contacts, details about tickets I had purchased and every picture I’ve taken in the last six years.

We went back to the store and the clerk told me he had called 18 times, cut his mother off once and still didn’t get a response.

“When did you last have it?” my sister asked, well aware of my history. “You looked at it after you got out of the rest room because we set the time to meet.” She was right – as much as I hated to admit it.

That meant it had to be in the store somewhere, but where?

The clerk said he’d call the number while I searched. Pants? No. Shirts? No. Jackets? No. Ties….bingo!

There, on a black counter was my black phone. I was happier than when the clerk told me I looked sexy.

I grabbed it and vowed I’d either hang it around my neck on a chain like Apple Flavor Flav or get a lime green case.

I know lime green might not go with everything, but when I’m wearing a sexy suit, who will notice?
