Women’s Jeans 2021: What’s in Style

By Charlotte Hofer

High-Waisted. Skinny. Boyfriend. Flare. Distressed. Aughh! You might FEEL distressed, with all these choices!

It’s enough to make your head spin. So what’s coming up in 2021? And what’s the difference between a skinny and a boyfriend jean anyway, or flare and a bootcut? If you feel a little lost when it comes to the latest fashion trends, not to worry. SFW has done the research for you, and here’s what we’ve found.

1. SKINNY JEANS. Love the look? We’re happy to report that skinny jeans – and super skinny -- are still a staple for 2021. But now they’re offered in a high-rise or medium waist. The details are important too: uneven cuts, distress on the jeans, different lengths, raw edges. This season will offer blue, black, and asphalt jeans – most combined with T-shirts or blouses of different styles and length – from the cropped top to a loose sweater.

Grab a white T-shirt and leather jacket, and you’ve got a perfect look for all occasions. Classic, hot, and gorgeous. After all, it was Marilyn Monroe who made skinny pants famous in the 1950s!

2. STRAIGHT LEG JEANS. A bit more forgiving than skinny jeans with less of a body-hugging style, they fit looser on the calves and ankles. They are flattering on any figure. Wear them with an oversize shirt.

Tip: Skinny or straight leg, don’t be afraid to try all-black too – top, jeans and boots. It always makes the figure look slimmer. Pair it with feminine pumps or dangerously sexy high heel boots! All-black not your thing? Add bright heels to create visual interest, like red or animal print. 3. WIDE-LEG JEANS. Ready to throw it back to the 70s? Seems wide-leg jeans are showing up everywhere. With a high waist, this retro silhouette can be flattering, as it nips you in at the waist. Wear it with a white T or go earth-tone and accentuate the high waist even more with a belt.

4. FLARED JEANS. While wide-leg jeans are wide all the way down, flared jeans flare out from the knee down. Easy to wear with anything – it cuts through from sneakers to boots to a black lace shirt if you want to formal things up a bit.

5. BOOTCUT JEANS. These jeans have a smaller flare – just wide enough to wear a boot. It’s a good look for curvy women as it balances the hips. Try them with a longer jacket to make your legs look longer.

6. BOYFRIEND JEANS. Loose, cuffed; it’s a look borrowed from the boys. This easy, slouchy style works well ultra laidback, so grab a casual top and sneakers. Or, elevate it to nighttime with classic pumps.

7. OTHER TRENDS. Look for patches on jeans, denim on denim. And distress. Holes in the knees will allow you to feel freedom and youth. Another look – shine. Metallic fabrics mixed with vintage denim, for a look both retro and futuristic. And really, can you have too much shine? Otherwise, there is always the ultimate comfy go-to high-waisted mom jeans.

The bottom line is, 2021 offers you a chance to build up your jeans wardrobe with different shapes, cuts, and styles… there’s a different look for every mood.

So if you feel the skinny jean is your denim life partner, rest easy. The love for skinnys is universal. But with 2021 offering so many fabulous additional styles out there, it gives you lots of choices, making every day a fun fashion adventure! n
