MODERN

Classic

It’s often said to never judge a book by its cover. As, in the case of this central city beauty, it took vision and an eye for design to create the perfect dream home. The homeowners have completely remodeled this spectacular 5-bedroom, 3 full bath ranch walk-out home, and nearly two years later, this one-of-a-kind classic has been transformed into a modern haven with subtle hints of rustic elements.

“I remember being contacted that this home was on the market so I went ahead and scheduled a tour while my husband was at work,” the homeowner adds. With a few new construction projects under her belt, her husband had full confidence in her choices yet still rushed to the home to take a preview. “It had good bones and is located on the golf course so the home has privacy yet the convenience of inner-city living.” Only a few walls needed to be removed but it had great windows and a layout that fit our lifestyle and love for entertaining large groups.”

Endless rich wood floors and neutral paint colors extend throughout the home. The entryway with an arch-top window allows light to flood in and showcase the unique linear railing leading to the downstairs and a rustic shiplap panel that graces the wall without drawing too much attention. For consistency, they selected a family of unique wood accented chandeliers in various sizes for the perfect blend of modern meets rustic.

Once inside, you’ll take notice of the various seating options, something high on the list of must-haves for these homeowners. “I’d seen these dining table style “islands” in magazines when researching up and coming trends and immediately fell in love,” she adds. With a contrasting dark wood base that allows for ample storage, the top is a warm granite that is illuminated by an elongated square chandelier and open windows. “We did add an extra side window and oversized sliding glass doors that lead to the patio.” A subtle exterior overhang is perfect for light control so they can leave all windows facing the golf course completely open

without worrying about privacy. Added to this casual passthrough dining space is a custom wall of white cabinets with tile accents which perfectly house a flat screen television, their selection of wine, and a dedicated coffee bar.

Knowing groups often congregate in the kitchen, an additional central island with a black base and granite top can be used to display food and wine rather than having to take up space for seating. Dual square pendants and recessed lighting are perfect for evening gatherings. Meanwhile, oversized windows make the space glow during daylight, showcasing the crisp white cabinets and grey subway tile backsplash. “The faucet is unique because there are two of them. The main one remains traditional but there’s a side faucet for immediate hot or cold water.” Another feature that comes in handy when entertaining.

Effortlessly flowing into the rest of the main floor open concept is another casual dining area. This quaint space includes a neutral toned traditional dining room table and chairs. A soft blue rug begins the introduction of perfectly selected accent colors.

The great room defines comfort and cozy without missing a beat on beauty and design. Matching slate blue sofas with butter yellow throw pillows add subtle color, and a painting above the fireplace adds a touch of nostalgia. “This was actually painted by our daughter,” adds the homeowners. “It’s an image of the view from the back of our home.” The artistic creation sits on a wood mantle while resting on coordinating shiplap above a dry stacked stone fireplace. “When we entertain it often gets warm in the home yet we still like to enjoy the beauty of our gas fireplace so we chose one where we can have the option for a damper that opens and closes to control heat regardless of the flame.” Another personal feature of the home is a black lacquer grand that quietly rests in the corner of the space. “We both play piano.” And for a touch of texture, the homeowners opted for two printed side chairs.

Despite their love for entertaining, this home isn’t all play and no work. Dual pocket doors can easily be opened and closed for access to the office, which doubles as a legal bedroom. Crisp white shutters control light and privacy. Meanwhile, a rustic wall of built-in cabinets and shelves are perfect for displaying family heirlooms and collectables with additional storage below. A simple wood desk completes the space.

Traditional double doors lead to the master bedroom where a warm and soft white fabric tufted headboard and soft neutral tone bedding invite comfort. A bright golden oriental rug anchors the space and introduces new colors to the muted space. Going back to bright, with hints of colorful interest, the master bathroom features neutral heated tile floors and crisp white granite countertops. Dual sinks flank a central storage cabinet while clean and crisp white shutters are perfect for both form and function. But the real amenity of this master bath is the walk-in shower with rain shower head and unique pebble floor and accent strip. Another unique addition is a stacked washer and dryer that makes doing chores a little bit easier.

Whether entertaining, hosting intimate family gatherings with their four adult children or having a large get-together, the fully custom mud room features simple lines and neutral tones. Custom lockers with a built-in bench are perfect for hanging clothes or bulky outerwear with ease.

The lower level is simplistic yet comforting with a dedicated game area that includes a retro pin ball machine and pool table that also serves up a competitive game of ping-pong. A large dark grey sectional and coordinating rug are an invitation to curl up for movie night. An elongated glass tile fireplace and flat screen television are flanked by white floating shelves and minimal accessories. For added convenience, large sliding doors lead to the patio. Three additional bedrooms are perfect for visiting family and guests while the lower-level full bath is sheik with grey custom cabinets, white countertops and a large silver framed mirror. An additional spacious room houses the main washer and dryer and serves as the perfect fitness area.

Even though these homeowners may be parting ways with this fully remodeled gem, they have both fully enjoyed designing and decorating this stunning fivebedroom beauty. So, what’s the best part of this home? Location, location, location! The openness of the backyard overlooking Prairie Green golf course, the many wild life strolling by, and the sunsets are the best Sioux Falls can offer! n
