E d it or’s No t e
Want to begin by saying
Thank You
The support and love that has been constant since the launch of our publication has been so encouraging. We appreciate YOU! So much has happened in the past few months that has tested the resolve of our Caribbean neighbors, the storms wreaked havoc on many of our unspoiled tropical paradises, but the strength and unity of our island sisters and brothers has shown its true character once again. We dedicate this Issue of YOU to the Caribbean. Sun Sea and Sand is our life and blood, no one knows it better than us. What the fierce winds destroyed, the rain and sun will renew, and what the storm surges washed away, the new tide will cleanse. We are Caribbean Strong. This Issue of YOU focuses on what makes us special. Our unique fashion, music and culinary delights set us apart from the world. We showcase the Caribbean Spirit and Laughter. Fearless styles and Pulsing Energy. We can’t forget our Carnivals. As I write this note, Trinidad and Tobago is gearing up for the worlds greatest festival. The Soca, the Food, the Color, the Parade, the Steelpan, a coconut in the Savannah.
Come “take ah taste” of some curry crab and callaloo, my sweet islands will always be ready for YOU!

KAPRI
Fueled by her love of 90s clubland and her rich Caribbean roots, Canadian singer-songwriter KAPRI is a cross-cultural phenomenon. Universal Music Canada’s latest domestic signing, KAPRI was born and raised in Edmonton but now calls Toronto home. It’s her unique upbringing, however, that sparked an interest in music and landed her debut single, “Deeper,” a coveted No. 1 spot on the Canadian Spotify Viral Chart. KAPRI was raised by a single mother from Trinidad and Tobago who opened Alberta’s first Afro-Caribbean dance studio. While watching her mom perfect routines to beat-driven Soca rhythms and African drums, KAPRI developed a strong connection to bass and syncopated rhythm. She’s also influenced by soul legends such as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan, as well as house-music pioneers like Robin S and Martha Wash (the latter with whom KAPRI has already shared a stage at Toronto’s World Pride in 2014). Rather than emulating her heroes, KAPRI goes deeper on “Deeper,” offering a modern take on 90s dance music with a blend of soul. “It’s not about hopping on the 90s-is-back train but rather bringing emotion back to the dance floor where it belongs!” she says of her distinct musical flavour.

Straying from the hard, robotic sound of recent dancefloor bangers, KAPRI views “Deeper” as an anecdote to the FOMO-induced moments inspired by the digital age. “I want to create music that moves you and makes you want to move. The kind of tracks that let you escape to a safe space where you can just be yourself,” she says. It’s an M.O. that’s been informed by KAPRI’s own education both in and out of school: she holds an honours degree in Communications and Psychology from Carleton University, is a devoted fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and has spent the past few years cutting her teeth in some of the country’s most esteemed dance clubs in Montreal and Toronto.

The music video for “Deeper,” released on September 20, blends the artist’s sound and vision beautifully. KAPRI was involved in all aspects of the video, guiding everything from location scouting to styling to choreography. “I want to ensure I am a part of every aspect of the creative process. For the “Deeper” video, I chose my own looks and found a neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto that 100 percent represents who I am—a Carib-Canadian who’s linked to so many amazing scenes,” she says.
KAPRI’s musical influences and instincts have served her well. Her passionate approach to soulful dance music has garnered an international following, and her goal is to prove that “positive vibes can be powerful and not predictable.”

FW2018: “Pulchrior Evenit” from the Caribbean. At the invitation of Tobago Fashion Coda and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Trinidad and Tobago, Liselore Frowijn (NL) and her label FROWIJN recently hosted their 2018 Fall-Winter Runway show under the iridescent blue Caribbean sky, amidst palm trees and falling coconuts at the Magdalena Grand, Tobago WI. An unusual location for a winter presentation, these twenty-two different looks focus on aesthetic disorder while simultaneously promoting their complexities. A chilling, grey wind just before sunset perhaps fit the creative message hidden

under heavy, jacquard wools designed far across the ocean in Amsterdam, NL by graphic artist Michiel Schuurman (NL) and produced in Italy. The one-sleeved cape, and matching inflatable accessories caught the attention of the press like surfers catching waves. It all began when Frowijn and Schuurman visited Villa Noailles in the south of France on a research trip. Frowijn’s new fallwinter collection 2018 is inspired primarily by artist and patron of the arts Marie-Laure de Noailles (1902-1970), an eccentric personality known for supporting the likes of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Man Ray, as well as countless others. Her economy of sharing and enabling young artists to produce their work is still valid and necessary today. Art, as a social tool, is needed to connect people in a more sustainable

way in order to offer a fresh perspective of our future. “After visiting Villa Noailles I started thinking that the time we’re living in now feels like ‘the boring ages,’ compared to Marie-Laure de Noaille’s lifestyle’’ said Frowijn. “How do we protect ourselves for losing our creative engines? And how do we think about creativity alongside sustainable practices? I want to challenge myself and exchange it with others.” Other materials that made an appearance at the show in Tobago were flock-printed cashmeres, eco-cottons, ecoleathers and lace, along with office shirting stripes cleverly turned into wearable outputs. Frowijn’s signature printed matelassé, a particular favorite with the locals, also evoked sportswear and all the activity taking place around the resort. Pinstripe tailoring had a strong presence, especially the deconstructed double-breasted blazer worn on bare skin with an open back– a new and audacious promiscuity spotted on several of her looks. The designs dedicated
to the paradisiac island of Tobago evoked reverence in the audience and can be seen as a manifestation of the island’s slogan “Pulchrior Evenit,” which translated from Latin means, “She becomes more beautiful.” The designer did not hesitate and things got celestial when a cuffed, long kimono shirt ornamented with hanging sleeves felt almost bridal. No models, however, were headed toward the island’s famous wedding arch and instead were headed towards a creation beyond compromise. Tremayne
FRAUENFELDER He comes from a family of artisans. His mother, is known as one of the best seamstresses/tailors in Belmont and his dad, was always handy with his hands and was involved in mas making. All of his older five siblings carry the creative gene – one of them a Carnival queen and Monday wear designer, the other a jewellery maker in Florida.

Tremayne is the third child out of the six to continue in the art of making things. His has nothing to do with clothing or precious metal but his main tools are paper, wood glue, crazy glue, paint, and a pair of sharp eyes. The end product are detailed miniature buildings that reflect the Trinidad characteristic. They vary from old colonial houses with signature lattice work and awnings to dirt houses and wooden houses to traditional Carnival players like Pierrot Grenade and Dame Lorraine.
