A note from the president
I
received recently a letter from a 61-year-old male who is serving life in prison for murdering his wife. He asked that we send him a free copy of saint Francis de sales’s Thy Will Be Done, hoping it would serve as his “personal medication.” His letter led me to reflect not simply on God’s mercy, but also on the need for each of us to live as pilgrims on the path to heaven. God’s words are not easy: “Because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth” (revelation 3:16). Perhaps our sins aren’t as shocking as the one committed by this man, but if we aren’t as devoted as he is to growing in virtue, then we surely risk losing our heavenly reward. To strengthen our chance of receiving this reward, it is essential that we immerse ourselves in the lives and writings of holy men and women. This is precisely our mission at sophia Institute Press — publishing books that help you to persevere in fidelity to the Church and to grow holy despite our age of skepticism and doubt. In fact, among our new releases you’ll find titles that will help you to discover the sheer joy of a virtuous life, to become a better parent and spouse, to prepare for receiving the Most Holy eucharist, and to attend to God’s voice daily. and to ensure you don’t find yourself discouraged, our lead title for the fall, Nothing Short of a Miracle, is packed with fascinating stories of miraculous healings that have occurred — in our lifetime — through the intercession of modern-day saints. no matter where you are on your journey of faith, you are sure to find here a book that will further you along the path to holiness.

Nothing Short of a Miracle God’s Healing Power in Modern Saints God doesn’t need us to work miracles for Him, but it certainly seems His good pleasure to perform great miracles by means of human prayers and human hands. For more than a quarter century, Treece — America’s most experienced and revered saintwatcher — has gathered countless reports of miraculous healings in our lifetimes.
By Patricia Treece Price:

Binding: Paperback, eBook Pages:

Among them is the complete 2005 cure of Sr. Simon-Pierre’s advanced Parkinson’s disease after she appealed to Pope John Paul II. After intense scrutiny, the Vatican declared her healing miraculous, leading to John Paul’s beatification. Here, too, are tales of numerous lesser-known healings brought to light by Treece’s own investigations into little-known official Vatican documents as well as from her many interviews.
You’ll read accounts of miracles wrought by some of the greatest healers of all, with details of authenticated healings by André Bessette, John Bosco, Frances Cabrini, “At a time when the world has Solanus Casey, John Paul II, Chiara Lubich, deluded itself into thinking that Padre Pio, Luigi Scrosoppi, Elizabeth science has all the answers, this Seton, Francis Xavier Seelos, Fulton Sheen, book reminds us that God has Mother Teresa, and others. answers of his own.”
Matthew Kelly Author of Rediscover Catholicism
The healings documented are not hasty judgments; they’re instantaneous, complete, and permanent cures for which scientific medicine still has no explanations — cures that meet the Vatican’s stringent seven-part test of authenticity.
When faced with a woman skeptical about whether she could be cured, the healer Solanus Casey is reported to have said, “Don’t you know that God can cure cancer just as easily as the common cold?” Not only can God do this. These pages show that He is doing it. May these miracles bring joy to your heart and renew the confidence in His love that God yearns for you to have!

True or False Possession? Learn to Distinguish the Demonic from the Demented Unhinged or unholy? Fiend or fraud? That’s what authorities had to decide about the French nun Marie-Thérèse Noblet (1889–1930). She suffered sudden diseases that were as quickly cured, chokings, night beatings, unclean visions of blasphemous scenes, violent shakes witnessed by onlookers, foul assaults from filthy beasts, including one she recalled as “full of terrible beauty with eyes full of hate.”

Then there’s Sr. Jeanne of the Angels, the seventeenth-century prioress of her Ursuline convent, plagued by diabolical visits with an explicitly erotic element, which spread, epidemic-like, to the Ursuline sisters under her care. Were these sisters really demonic? Deranged? Or merely deceitful? That’s the first question exorcists must answer — the question addressed in these pages by the world-famous French neuropsychiatrist Jean Lhermitte. Genuine demonic possessions, admits Lhermitte, evade the explanations and exceed the competence of even the wisest physicians: they must be handled not in the clinic, but by the Church. At the same time, exorcisms will not help the mentally ill. Skilled physicians and trained clergy must press past the visions, the gibbering, the howlings and the grindings of teeth to distinguish between real possession and pathology, mental or physical.
“As a psychiatrist, Lhermitte builds on the Catholic understanding of true possession and helps to treat the always troubling mixture of illness, sinfulness and the demonic present in such patients.” Rev. Dennis McManus St. John the Evangelist Seminary
6
That’s the work Dr. Lhermitte undertakes here. With sober clarity, he reviews clinical records of cases that alarmed our forefathers as well as the cases of many souls that he personally examined. By means of these cases, Lhermitte will teach you not to rush to judgment and show you when it’s time to call the priest.

Cari tells of her increasing love for the Eucharist and her family. To Jesus she confesses, “I rose above myself just enough to let You bring the blessings of these children into my life. I was sometimes scared and sometimes angry, and always at a loss about how I was going to mother these children, but I knew that it would be Your grace, and not my shortcomings, that would triumph.” Cari’s tale will lead you to share her conviction that we never know what God has planned for us tomorrow, but, for sure, “it will be better than anything we ourselves could have planned, even in our wildest dreams.”

The Catholic Guide to Depression
Countless Christians — including scores of saints — have suffered profound, pervasive sorrow that modern psychiatrists call “depression.” Then, as now, great faith and even fervent spiritual practices have generally failed to ease this wearying desolation of soul. In these pages, Catholic psychiatrist Aaron Kheriaty reviews the effective ways that have recently been devised to deal with this grave and sometimes deadly affliction — ways that are not only consistent with the teachings of the Church, but even rooted in many of those teachings. By Aaron Kheriaty, M.D. Price:

Extensive clinical experience treating patients with depression has shown Dr. Kheriaty that the confessional can’t cure neuroses, nor can the couch forgive sin. Healing comes only when we integrate the legitimate discoveries of modern psychology and pharmacology with spiritual direction and the sacraments, giving particular attention to the wisdom of the Church Fathers and the saints.
“This is a very well written book and it is recommended to those who have depression and to the interested non-medical reader.” Catholic Medical Quarterly This book affords friends, loved ones, pastors, and spiritual directors the knowledge they seek to give depressed persons the understanding, help, and comfort they desperately need.
Here, with the expert help of Dr. Kheriaty, you’ll learn how to distinguish depression from similar-looking but fundamentally different mental states such as guilt, sloth, the darkness of sin, and the sublime desolation called “dark night of the soul” that is, in fact, a privileged spiritual trial sent to good souls as a special gift from God.
You’ll come to know how to identify the various types of depression and come to understand the interplay of their often manifold causes, biological, psychological, behavioral, cultural, and, yes, moral. Then you’ll learn about exciting breakthroughs in pharmacological and other medical treatments, the benefits and limitations of psychotherapy, the critical place that spiritual direction must have in healing, and the vital role that hope — Christian hope — can play in driving out depression.

Rebuilding Catholic Culture How the Catechism Can Shape Our Common Life
Rarely does a book come along that so succinctly explains the decline of modern culture, articulates a defense of the Church’s teachings, and offers a hope-filled path for building a civilization grounded in Catholic Truth. In these pages, Dr. Ryan Topping does all three, pulling back the curtain on the false philosophies of the secularists and showing that in the West today the most formidable threat to freedom is not failing economies or Islam, but secularism. Our best defense, he claims, is a vibrant Catholic culture, and our best hope for creating it lies in the principles found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
