VOIDFORM IYA EXHIBITION 2019 OCTOBER 2019 PJD ARCHITECTS
Jl. Pendakian Gn. Batur, Kabupaten Bangli, Bali INVOLVEMENT: ARCHITECT, PROJECT LEADER TEAM: SIRAJ DARAMI; DANNY JETHNANI; ALI URAYDI; ENGELBERTH; FAUZI YASIN
We took a look at the locations context, we found that there were a few villages around our site, and several points of interest such as Gunung Batur, Hot Springs, Lake Batur, Pura Ulun Danu Batur. Knowing this we realized that the location has many potentials, we would like to allow the people within the context of the locations to define for themselves what this space can be. Not only can the location host visitors during religious festivities at the Pura, It can serve Economic, Social, Educational & Creative Purposes. It can serve an economic function by hosting a market for the villages nearby, it can be a social hub for the villages (sort of their town hall), it can have an educational purpose if fitted with a library, it can be a tourist center for local and foreign tourist alike when they visit the mountain and the lake. With many possibilities for the site. Our approach was to create a modular 3m x 3m structure (based on the existing grid of ruin on site) out of wood that can adapt to the needs of the people within the context and can house different functions by increasing or decreasing the modules used for a specific activity. This way it can also adapt to the changing requirements of the people, having some permanent partitions and non-permanent ones. The 3m x 3m modular structure creates a perimeter around a void, allowing this void to be populated by an activity or a memory as required, therefore creating a space, an adaptable space, as so desired and defined by the people of Gunung Batur.
Circulation is enhanced on site by demolishing some existing structures to achieve flexible accessibility around the ruins.
Natural light and ventilation is an important part of the design and there is no space enclosed from light and ventilation by more than 6 meters, allowing for cross ventilation. This rule defines the area for permanent or semi-permanent functional spaces created on the 2nd level of the site.
Paving is added to the flexible circulation paths and open spaces with planted trees are deliberately added. The starting point of the modules rise from the existing structures left behind. Establishing a 3x3 perimeter
The Modules scale across the site and create a 2nd level based on this 3x3 perimeter grid found on site. Using the pre-existing grid found on site allows for minimum intervention and re-creates the memory of the old space left by the ruins on site.
The perimeter voids created by the modules on 2nd level are where we imagine most of the permanent and temporary functions to be. There are 3 vertical circulation paths for users to access, of which 2 of them were extended to serve as viewpoints, serving as an attraction for tourists and locals alike.
As the voids get populated with activity and memory, we imagined that the requirement for permanent structures will be a necessity, roofs can be added to house libraries, co-working spaces, religious activities. These shading structures and roofs built onto the modules will define the spaces that were once voids.
MOD_A This kind of Module is primarily serves as circulation for the 2nd level and can be populated with function or circulation on Ground level.
MOD_B Other than Circulation, this Module offers some shade on the 2nd level and this shade will most likely generate communal activity, it can be populated with function or circulation on the ground level.
MOD_C We imagine this kind of Module to have some economic and creative activity on it whilst acting as circulation for the 2nd level, as it offers more shade and the potential for planters. It can be populated with either function or circulation as required on the ground level.
MOD_D With this Module we imagined that a semi-permanent requirement needed whether it be to house visitors for temple activities, or as a temporary meeting space etc. The walls are created with fabric, and can be taken down when not in use. Typically below roofed space like this we imagine the ground floor to be populated by economic activity.
MOD_H This Module primarily allows for activity on the ground floor, providing air circulation and light along with some shade. It can offer space for circulation, social or economic activity such as food carts populating its voids.
MOD_G This kind of Module offers an expansion of space as the 2nd level is kept open which also helping with air circulation and light. We imagine this kind of module to be used as entry points on the perimeter of the site, and to house functions such as parking and circulation.
MOD_F The deliberate green spaces created with this Module, help deliver air circulation and light to the structure. These spaces offer an opportunity for a park, and social functions to occur, the perimeter modules to this module will most likely be the more spatially vibrant spaces created within the void.
MOD_E A Module such as this one will contain functions that are more permanent on the 2nd level. Such as a library for the people (as shown in the diagram), a visitor center office, even a co-working or presentation space. Having a roof the ground floor is open to use for economic or social activities as required.
