Animal Paradise Collection

Animal Paradise Collection In preparation of the Lotus arts de vivre Animal Paradise project, Rolf and wife, Helen, roamed the globe in search of suitable textiles for these sculptures. Materials were collected from Europe, Morocco, India, Japan, Indonesia, and China. The textiles, most of which are categorized as antique, were intricately and artistically crafted onto the animals, such as Rhinos, Pigs, Ducks, Parrots, Chickens, Roosters, Toucans, Elephants and Frogs. For instance, it means that the neck of these animals could be covered with textiles which were worn as gowns by the European Royal Families during the 1850’s. The wings could be covered with the antique sash of the Kimonos (or Obi’s as they are called) worn by the Japanese, circa 1915. The interesting part of these Obi’s is that it was worn during formal ceremonies of the noble class and were layered in hierarchy, which meant the silver and gold embroidered Obi’s were worn by the upper most crest. All hems are trimmed with European style gold cords with embroidered gold-plated flowers, a technique that originated in Asia and a style which is typically evident amongst the Royals of Western Europe. Additionally in pure Lotus essence, the art pieces were embellished with semi-precious stones.
