Sicilian Banquet, Bangkok, 24 & 25 March 2009 Lotus Arts de Vivre presented the return of a unique dinner concept in its recently transformed atelier on Rama III Road. The second time that this style of event was held, Cuisine Atelier served a Sicilian feast resulting from the collaboration between Lotus Arts de Vivre, Grand Hyatt Erawan's Chef Frederik Farina and Italian Fine Wines. This was the first in a series of dinners throughout the year by Chef Frederik and guests had enjoyed a Sicilian based menu from its creator's home province. He created menus that use original Italian ingredients prepared in ways that gently concentrate their intrinsic taste, letting their elemental flavours speak with clarity. To compliment the cuisine on offer Italian Fine Wines chose a selection of Sicilian wines, including such notables as Cusumano, which perfectly matched each dish.

Chinese Red Lacquer Carved by Hand
Lacquer is a natural product made from the sap of the Lac tree (Rhus Verniciflua). It is an outstanding water resistant product that withstands high temperatures and is regarded as exceedingly durable. Lacquer has been around for thousands of years and its usage has evolved around Asia in a variety of different ways. For instance in China, carved lacquer items were commissioned by the Imperial Court some of them were recently exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York - extra ordinary pieces indeed. Lacquer was also employed by simple farmers and fishermen to produce utensils for everyday use. The process to create carved lacquer objects can sometimes be tedious and often takes months or even years to complete. For use in carving, lacquer of at least 4 millimeters thickness is required. Each millimeter needs 15 - 18 layers of lacquer and every layer takes days to dry before the next layer can be applied. Once coated and polished, the lacquered item needs to be carved quickly or else the lacquer will harden and can no longer be worked on or carved. Cinnabar refers to the precious and very fast pigment used throughout Asia to create the Imperial Red color. This color comes close to the natural colour of the lacquer itself after drying.
