Art Sessions with Olga Marie Polunin

Bangkok, 13 December 2013 - The night starred Olga Marie Polunin, a Belgianbased Russian-English lady who traces her descent back to Asia through her Hakka Chinese ancestry. Her paintings are inspired by the early religious works of both Europe and Asia, highlighting the creative and uplifting aspects of humanity. Her aim for this show was to emphasize a feeling of renewal and rebirth. She believes each and every one of us has collectively come through a difficult period and now is the time for fresh new beginnings, growth and success, which is perfectly reflected in her current collection.

Meet the Artists

Olga Marie Polunin

Olga is of Russian-English and Hakka Chinese descent living in Belgium. Her paintings are inspired by the early religious works of both Europe and Asia, highlighting the creative and uplifting aspects of feminine humanity. There is humour and wit, sensuality and spirituality. “I love paintings... and not just my own. That a composition of pigments from a tube can speak to us in a deep and meaningful way is for me some kind of miracle. Each painting that I make is like an emotion that is crystallised, to be freed when a viewer looks upon it and feels what I put in. I wish that my paintings bring joy and put smiles on the faces of those who look upon them, this is my intention. Perhaps it is some thought put into meaning, but most important for me is for the work to give emotion. If this happens, then I have achieved my purpose.

Alessandro Kokocinski is a powerful interpreter of the human soul, of its spiritual tensions and longings. His works exude pathos and drama: every feeling is allowed, except indifference. The Russian fantastic world, the Latin America passion and realism, the 17th century Italian chiaroscuro blend in his paintings and surface from his sculptures, creating a wave of energy that grabs the staring viewer without any warning. The complicated and troubled life of Alessandro Kokocinski across five continents definitely contributed to his art. Alessandro Kokocinski was born in Porto Recanati in 1948 from a Russian mother and a Polish father. His young hands took the excitement and the beauty of those places and experiences. In the early sixties, Kokocinski joined the circus in Buenos Aires, as an acrobat and travelled across Latin America. When he came back to Buenos Aires where he exhibited drawings exposing dirty politics, he was persecuted by the Argentinean military regime for his political views. He fled to Chile then to Italy where he was welco med in Rome by his fellow Italian artists such as Rafel Alberti, Alberto Moravia, and Carlo Levi, and eventually decided to settle down. His work, a distinctive mix of painting and sculpture, offered to the shocked European audience a clear cut report of the crimes of the military regime in Argentina and a merciless picture of South American society. In the eighties he travelled to Asia and to Central Europe, his solo exhibitions increasing his already established popularity.

‘TRASHED’ screened in Jakarta Trashed opened the ERASMUSINDOCS film festival at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on November 11th. The screening was organised in cooperation with the Kartika Soekarno Foundation.
