The Big Egg Hunt was a plan hatched by Elephant Family and Action for Children to host a recordbreaking egg hunt across Central London to raise money for these two excellent causes. More than 200 uniquely crafted eggs created by leading artists, designers, architects and jewellers, were hidden across the city during Easter. Teams of families and friends joined the hunt, searched zone maps and followed the clues in an attempt to prove their skills were as robust as Sherlock Holmes and to win the grand prize. Lotus Arts de Vivre created and donated the Blooming Dragon Egg for the event.
Gunter Sachs Remembered
Gunter was a friend, a reliable friend, and somebody who treasured friendship as Germans do – they die for their friends, right or wrong, as do Thais. Roman Polanski told me that one of the first callers after his mishap in Zurich was Gunter who immediately offered financial assistance if Roman needed it to pay the bill. Gunter was a playboy, a clever one who did very well financially. He was the only playboy Germany could afford after the war and played his role to perfection. He married famous film stars like Brigitte Bardot, gave great parties, which were fantastically organized and always full of intelligent fun. We stayed in his house in the VINTAGE golf club in Palm Springs in California, he gave dinners for us in his house in St Moritz. Photography was his passion and was a renowned artist in that field. His wife Miriam of 25 years, who is very open and caring, brought some peace to the ups and downs of his life. His children are successful and happy and he has now moved on to a cosmic address. See you there Gunter. Yours Rolf
Mount Kailash
The von Bueren Trip 9 -31 July 2012
We walked in from Nepal following Colin Thubron’s way (see ‘To A Mountain in Tibet’) for eight days to acclimatize to the extreme heights of the Kora, or circumambulation, which, once done promises relief from all past sins, which I personally desired to lighten my load before establishing acoustic address. The first and most powerful memory is the mountain, its magnetic power, often described as being the centre of the world. Then there are the people with their incredible warmth, cleverness and physical strength. How could they survive in this unbelievably harsh surrounding, with its marginal planting and harvesting seasons, standing on one leg only, the leg of worldly possessions, without the spiritual leg to support them? Life in Tibet has improved a lot under the Chinese. There are modern roads, electricity and consumer goods are widely available and no doubt, there will be a highway around the Kailash, to prove, that China can do it. But yearning for the spiritual is obvious, and particularly around the lakes and Mount Kailash. Thousands of Tibetans do the Kora, some of them by prostrating
Trekking to Mount Kailash in Tibet serves as a powerful spiritual experience. It is in a country where spirituality permeates every aspect of life. The mountain has been a key site for pilgrims for thousands of years. One has to be close to experience the powerful vibration this mountain pulses. themselves all the way around, meaning they don’t walk, but add one prostration to another to make headway. It is tough for them too, while we are pushed to the limits. Hail to the honeyed dried bananas of Thailand, hail to Red Bull, both saved my life at occasions. Kruay taak, or dried bananas, came out top among the dried fruits we carried and the Tibetans loved them. I did not know then that we have a Thai banana Society in Phitsanulok, which even offers chocolate-coated kruay taak. Delicious indeed and I am sure it is being marketed all over the world. Red Bull saved me twice. Once on the first day, when the schedule said three hours walk, but it turned out to be much longer, especially for an old goat. I could not imagine having been able to reach the camp without my trusty Krating Daeng. The same thing happened on the fifth day. Thank you Krating Daeng! We, from Thailand, live in an incredible luxury and surplus (so do most westerners). It took months of planning to reduce our gear for the trek to a minimum, only to find that we still needed seven to 10 times more than the Tibetans who were with us carried. It was
unbelievable. One also becomes conscious of the rubbish we leave behind because a lack of awareness about rubbish disposal has converted the beautiful countryside into a tip. But as Thais, or adopted Thais, we see the rose, the flowers, and not the rubbish, which offers great relief. Cultural differences, or part of them, are certainly formed by our surroundings. We in Thailand, in general, use flowers to express our reference to Lord Buddha, while in Tibet they use stones, which they carve and use for the same purpose. The clouds which the Chinese use in their paintings and textiles come from Tibet. Tibetan clouds are different, like in the paintings, and quite often one sees a dragon in their forms. It is odd, that Thailand with its exotic and fertile land practices a clean and lean and disciplined Buddhist belief, while Tibet with its vast rolling hills and endless open pastures fills the void with Buddhas of every kind and with Bhodisattavas, saints, symbols, thangkas, holy stones, prayer flags, all which form and endless spiritual carpet which supports them in their daily life. This trip was devoted to our grandchildren, the older ones, in hope that the younger ones,
when they reach the age, will also do the Kora to bring a little spirituality to their urban life. Before crossing back into Nepal, we met a group of two women and a man working on a project. The leader was from Oxford, in England, and they were studying the material aspects of pilgrimages, funded by a number of foundations. They were a most interesting and lively group and we had a great time together. It turned out, that they had done the Kora three times to get more acquainted with the many tribes and religions which meet at Kailash. They had been on the trek for 31 days. What is it about Tibet and its religion (and its suppression by the Chinese) that fascinates westerners? The same fascination exists with Bali and the religious side of India. In my view, westerners seek something they have lost – a spiritual cushion – as their own religion does not provide such comfort anymore. In other words, food for the spirit. Rationality is not enough! There are other parts which need feeding, more subconscious parts, and Tibet, as well as Bali, with their ceremonies, metaphysical tokens, and their magic seem to respond well to this western demand. In Thailand we have many answers to these subconscious yearnings, from fortune tellers and sorcerers to spirit houses and trees, the whole animistic aspect of life caters to those who seek help and psychiatrists are not in the forefront yet unlike in the west.
With Miss Tibet?
Alexandre Charriol Given Alexandre Charriol’s peripatetic existence, it is hardly surprising that human flow and the dynamics of everyday life have become such a prominent feature of the 32-year olds recent artwork. “My current collection expands on my previous explorations of human flow to incorporate everyday objects that surround us. In fact with “Human Flow with Objects of Life” makes use of objects which I have found in my ventures around the world.”
