about the piece In this project, we bring a "Latinx" spin on the variety show that takes different forms in Latin American and United States television today. We use the show as a platform for International Students to talk about relevant issues related to their countries of origin in Latin America and the practices that bring them joy and help them thrive. This multimedia piece combines a live host (siri g) and a video component. The host invites their collaborators to take the screen while cheering the audience and asking some people on stage to rehearse practices of joy. Because many of us did not use the words "Latino/a/x/e" until we migrated to the States, an underline conversation will be around our opinions on the label.
content warning This show contains mature content, including partial nudity, erotic movement, profanity, mention of racial violence, and forced disappearances in Latin America.
a note from the director-producer
a note from the director-producer Hi! My name is siri g, and precisely this week, I became a doctor from the Theater and Dance Department's (T&D) program Performance as Public Practice (yay!). As a performance artist and video artist, I wanted this to be my goodbye piece, where I get to share some of my methodologies, especially, in this case, aligned with experimental documentary making. I wanted to create this show as a way to expand and critically reflect on our notions of latinidad, and the differences and commonalities between being from Latin America and being part of the Latinx community born and raised in the United States. I also wanted to create bridges between the Department of Theatre and Dance and other departments, which is why the majority of my collaborators are from the Latin American Studies Department at The University of Texas at Austin.
