S I R I N A L AW Sirina is currently a second year Architecture student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She was born and raised in Hong Kong for 11 years before she moved to Cupertino, California for middle and high school. Her passions were always more geared towards the artistic side. She dances, plays a Chinese instrument at senior homes as a volunteer, and she loves working with kids at an art school back at home. Even though she hasn’t really gotten the chance to pick up any of those in college, being able to express her creativity and working at studios for architecture has definitely satisfied her artistic needs here in college.

S T U D I O WA R M - U P ASSIGNMENT The word I used as an inspiration for my boolean models was Conglomerate. During this part of the assignment, I was able to really have fun and play around with commands and functions Rhino had to offer. It gave me the courage to be bold with my ideas and not be afraid to create more abstract and creative shapes.

STUDIO DESIGN P R OJ ECT To design a Synthetic Futures Lab in the space between Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica and the kitchen supply shop next to it. The space is also known as the Rose alley, which is an alley that’s 12 ft by 100 ft. The methodology I used as an inspiration for my Synthetic Futures Lab design was to juxipose the noun conglomerate and the feeling of expansive. With curves to bring natural light into the building. In addition to the subtractive element of concaving and convexting to create an atrium at the center of the building. I experimented with the interseciton of curves to help create concaving and convexing curves that would allow natural light to bounce inside the space as well as being a driving factor of how the interior space was carved out. Although the building form is a product of convect and concave curves piecing together, it allows for light to fill up the space with the open atrium in the center as well as the curved floor plates. For program, I focused on designing more public parts of the building on the first few floors and towards the front of the building and the more private usage of the building, such as the laboratory, towards the back and upper levels for a more natural circulation flow.

REFLECTION
Reflecting back at all the work I’ve this quarter, I realized how much I’ve learned and got to practice in comparison to first year. I really value this project because I really got to practice my Rhino skills as well as other digital skills. It’s amazing to see how much my project has progressed, from a more abstract and geometric shape to a building that is designed for a function.
