GROWING SANTA FE YOUNG

Cyndi Conn, Executive Director Creative Santa Fe

W

e appreciate the opportunity to share with Santa Fe Style readers the work that Creative Santa Fe is doing for our community. Our mission is to strengthen Santa Fe’s local economy by cultivating thought leadership and spearheading collaborative projects at the intersections of art, culture, technology, education, and industry. Despite its incredible attributes, like every other city in the world, Santa Fe has its challenges. Creative Santa Fe is currently tackling some of our most pressing issues, including affordable housing, walkability, connectivity, and city vibrancy. Creative Santa Fe envisions a more dynamic and livable city, one that can attract and retain a younger demographic. Trends point to a critical need to focus our collective energy on what Mayor Javier Gonzales calls “growing Santa Fe young.” Our city currently has a negative population growth from ages 5 to 54. We are working to reverse that trend.

The Millennial generation (those born between 1982 and 2004) is a robust demographic of bright, diverse, techsavvy, connected young people who truly care about the cities in which they choose to live. As described by Katharine Frase for the Huffington Post, “From the point of view of a city leader, Millennials are ideal residents. They generally pay a growing amount of taxes while imposing few demands on the city for services. … They generally have few health care needs and they bring enormous energy to a city, embracing new trends, enlightening others with creative ideas, and boldly looking for ways to do things better. The cities that are most attractive to Millennials, then, are also the ones most likely to thrive.” In short, Millennials are an economic force that Santa Fe must focus on attracting and retaining for our city to remain sustainable and vibrant. Working closely with the City of Santa Fe, nonprofits, businesses, and educational partners, Creative Santa Fe is actively promoting the assets in our city that attract Millennials — cultural attractions, affordability, walkability, entrepreneurship, technology, and a great quality of life. Through our extensive network of partners and collaborators, we continue to discover incredible organizations and strengths in our city that directly speak to these desires and demands. Santa Fe is home to internationally celebrated innovators, inventors, artists, filmmakers, diplomats, political leaders,

fashion designers, social scientists, CEOs, musicians, dancers, and other creators. Our many assets include the Santa Fe Institute, the Lannan Foundation, the Santa Fe Art Institute, St. Johns College, the Santa Fe Council on International Relations, the School for Advanced Research, the Lensic Performing Arts Center, the Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship, the Founder Institute, and the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. Our nightlife and cultural offerings extend beyond the traditional, with cutting-edge events and venues that include the Currents New Media Festival, SITE Santa Fe, FantaSe, the Outdoor Vision Festival, Meow Wolf, the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival, the After Hours Alliance Music Festival, MIX Santa Fe, and the Wine and Chile Festival. I invite you to join Creative Santa Fe in exploring and promoting the strengths of our community that extend far beyond our celebrated history, culture, and blue skies. Attend lectures, openings, concerts, events, and festivals that showcase groundbreaking art, science, technology, innovation, and thought leadership. Through our own awareness of these assets, we can broadcast all that Santa Fe has to offer to friends, family, recent graduates, professional colleagues, and companies looking to relocate. We must experience a side of Santa Fe that can contribute to our economic development and create solutions that bring renewed energy and resources to our entire community.

A Message from the Mayor of Santa Fe

Late in October, I had the honor of gathering for a dinner with the vibrant and growing arts community here in Santa Fe and awarding six truly special Santa Fe artists and art advocates with the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. This award not only recognizes outstanding achievement in the arts, but it also highlights the central role the arts play in our cultural and community success. Arts, culture, and creativity are key components of Santa Fe’s past; they are an even bigger part of our future. We are home to an arts community that is unique in history, size, and range. Our job is to preserve its authenticity, while taking the arts to the next level in a way that is sustainable and meaningful to everybody. From film to sculpture, painting to theatre, Santa Fe’s arts community is world-renowned, and deservedly so. I couldn’t be prouder of our artists and the foundational attraction they have for visitors to Santa Fe, and that’s why I’m working on four major policy initiatives to keep the arts in Santa Fe growing as we go. Over the next four years, we can and must do more to engage young people in the arts and share the benefits of our community’s cultural resources with young people; develop strategies that advance our community’s cultural assets for long-term viability; sustain spaces throughout our community that promote dialogue and artistic exchange; and provide all Santa Feans, and all visitors to Santa Fe, with access to and participation in the creative life of our community. We’re excited about making sure the arts in Santa Fe remain a pillar of our community and our culture, and I am proud to work with our artists and arts advocates to do everything I can as mayor to keep our culture strong.

As this issue goes to press we have just learned of the phenomenal sale at Sotheby’s auction house in New York of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Jimson Weed/White Flower #1 for $44,405,000. According to Sotheby’s, the price achieved was more than three times the previous auction record for a female artist and more than seven times the previous auction record for O’Keeffe. Two other works by O’Keeffe were also sold at the same auction for a total of $50,439,000. The bulk of the money received will go to the acquisitions fund of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. This is tremendous news for the museum and for the city. I am also pleased to be able to state that the real estate market in Santa Fe continues to show healthy signs of stabilization. This is good news for buyers and sellers alike. For those of you considering buying or selling, now is the time to take that next step to be part of an attractive market in a city that is becoming revitalized and enthusiastic about the future. This positive attitude has been created in part through a new leadership and philosophy at City Hall that seeks to work with nonprofits and the private sector to bring about meaningful and sustainable change to our city. In that vein, I am particularly pleased to be able to introduce our readers to the new Mayor of Santa Fe, Javier Gonzales, who graciously accepted my offer to address our readership in a letter he prepared, which can be found on page 9 of this issue.

Representing the point of view of one of our leading nonprofit organizations is Cyndi Conn, Executive Director of Creative Santa Fe, an organization that strengthens Santa Fe’s economy by cultivating thought leadership and spearheading collaborative projects at the intersections of art, culture, technology, education, and industry. Cyndi has contributed an insightful piece entitled “Growing Santa Fe Young,” which can be found on page 6. As you will glean from reading the contributions of our mayor and Cyndi Conn, the rich history and culture of Santa Fe are being enhanced and revitalized by a new energy and spirit as we look to the future. We hope that as you peruse this issue you will make the decision that you too want to become a part of our community as we focus our sites on a promising and exciting future in the City Different.
