I in 1917, the War Department identified 7,600 acres for troop training in an area that was then about five miles west of Houston proper. That space was called Camp Logan. By 1923, after victory was declared, Camp Logan closed and the city was encouraged to purchase the land before it could be snapped up by developers. In 1924 Will and Mike Hogg bought 1,500 acres and sold it to the city for cost. Their sister, Ima Hogg, took on the role of guardian of the park becoming a champion of its preservation and saving it from multiple attempts at development. Landscape architects Hare and Hare devised a plan for the park calling for an 18-hole golf course, scenic drives and trails. Today, nearly 10,000 joggers a day run along the three-mile loop through the park making it one of Houston’s most popular fitness destinations. But over the years the park grew shabby around the edges, and 2011’s devastating drought wiped out half the park’s trees. Reforestation became a huge priority. Memorial Park Conservancy – founded in 2000 – has been a leader in efforts to re-develop the park. Earlier this year, the group’s new master plan was accepted by the Houston City Council. In many ways, it echoes the park’s 1924 plan and embraces efforts to enhance the park’s natural setting. “It was important to us to pay homage to that, and not lose the natural character of the park,” says Jeff Aten, senior associate with Nelson Byrd Woltz, the firm working with the Conservancy and the Uptown TIRZ #16 to improve Memorial Park. Aten says the plan keeps Memorial Park as an urban wilderness, even as improvements are made to recreation areas. “This plan is about the next hundred years,” says Shellye Arnold, executive director of Memorial Park Conservancy. “As a society, we’re often disconnected from nature –we’re in offices, we’re looking at screens. So, when we get outside, we have a chance to reconnect, to be healthy in spirit and in body. Parks provide that for us.” Over the course of the next 20 years, plans for Memorial Park will enhance the space’s natural prairies

Park goers have been enjoying the space even as construction crew put the finishing touches on the space for its opening later this Summer. Snaking along Buffalo Bayou in the heart of Houston’s downtown, Buffalo Bayou Park grew up from the very banks where Houston was born. “Houston exists because of Buffalo Bayou,” says Hagstette, citing the waterway’s importance as a growth engine for Houston’s trade and commerce. “And original plans for parks in 1912 called for designing linear parks along the bayous. What we’re doing is realizing that vision.” Bayous snake all over Houston, hence its nickname “the Bayou City.” And these waterways provide not only important recreation opportunities, such as kayaking and canoeing, they’re essential ecological corridors providing homes for birds and wildlife that enhance the city. The Bayou Greenways 2020 project calls for using those bayous as both areas of recreation, as well as allowing them to serve their essential functions of water runoff during rainfalls and serving as a natural habitat. Development along the dozens of bayous across the city calls for bike and jogging trails, gardens, seating areas and spaces for bird watching. All totaled, the project develops, preserves and enhances nearly 150 miles of greenway. “Sixty percent of Houstonians live within a mile and a half of a greenway or bayou,” says OkanVick, Executive Director of the Houston Parks Board. “And these are places that will allow people to navigate along these corridors and
