he operating adjective for Houston’s Texas Medical Center is largest, as in world’s largest. Situated on a thousand acres south of Downtown, with 56

institutions employing more than a hundred thousand people, educating fifty thousand students of the life sciences, greeting seven million visitors a year, providing 9,000 hospital beds and 200,000 surgeries a year, the TMC may be named a center, but it is really a medical city within the city of Houston. Like many great things, the Texas Medical Center was born of both luck and vision, and since the birth happened in Houston, it was sired by cotton and nurtured by oil. The conception began in 1936 when Monroe Dunaway Anderson, the wealthy founder of a Houston cotton brokerage, foresaw his death. Anderson had grown up poor in rural Tennessee and made his way in Texas through thrift and careful management. Once he gave his nephew a new cap pistol and a quarter. Desperate to fire the gun, the boy asked about caps. Uncle Mon had a roll in his pocket, but to get them, the boy had to give him the quarter back. In Anderson’s mind, the best gift was a lesson in life. As the chief financial officer of the Anderson, Clayton & Company cotton brokerage, Anderson was known as a gruff, penny-pinching executive with some hidden soft spots who steered his firm through the Great Depression. A bachelor, he lived in Downtown hotels, and never bought a house until his final, yearlong illness. His sole indulgence, beginning in 1912, was the purchase of four Cadillacs during his lifetime. When he was in his early 60s, and sensing he was driving his last Cadillac, Anderson called two of his best friends and business associates together to create a foundation. In creating the M.D. Anderson Foundation, he was not only giving a gift to the city, but also saving his company from the financial struggle of having to buy his share of the company back from his heirs. The foundation must have pleased him as much as the cap pistol and the quarter.

By most accounts, he didn’t want just to succeed, he wanted to dominate. He had a reputation as a skillfully polite and diplomatic man to most of the world, but a ruthlessly critical boss to those who worked with him. He was determined to out-work his colleagues and his students. He began with complex vascular surgery, replacing damaged blood vessels with Dacron walls and doing creative work-arounds in which plugged vessels were disconnected from healthier ones. He is widely regarded as the pioneer in this surgery.

What has been your greatest memory in medicine? My most vivid memory was when Dr. Ki Hong called me to come to his clinic right away. He showed me the picture of a large tumor on the chest wall of a patient, from two months earlier. On that date he had started treatment with Erbitux, a monoclonal antibody therapy developed in my laboratory. Then he introduced me to the patient, and we examined her. The lesion on her chest had nearly disappeared. Dr. Hong told me, “John, your therapy works!”

What are your keys to success and how do you define success? Success for me is discovering or creating something new that helps to improve people’s lives. A key is leading by committing to a vision, listening well and basking in the success of others.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I am inspired by the magnificence of the biologic sciences, the needs of my cancer patients, the rewards from working together with other dedicated professionals and the love and support of my family.

What was the best advice you were ever given? The best advice came from my uncle: to live every day so that you can look forward with the greatest possible hopes and look back with the fewest possible regrets.

What does “home” mean to you? “Home” is the places where Anne and I have lived, worked and played together, and raised our three sons, and now also welcome their wives and our grandchildren.

What has been your biggest obstacle in life, and how did you overcome it? There is always the need for more people, resources, time and wisdom in order to accomplish my aspirations.

If you could have an in-depth conversation over dinner with anyone in history, who would you have it with and why? I would pick Augustus Caesar. I was born on his birthday. He entered a turbulent world and created peace and stability that lasted many years.

Indeed, the TMC is a place with a reputation

for innovation and collaboration – it has been for decades. The University of Texas’ MD Anderson Hospital of Cancer and Research (now the MD Anderson Cancer Center) arrived on the scene in 1942. The next year, the city of Houston set aside the 134 acres next to Hermann Hospital to develop a Hospital District. Baylor College of Medicine joined the growing cluster. The first coronary artery bypass was performed at the TMC in 1964 at The Methodist Hospital; four years later, the first successful heart transplant was performed in the Texas Heart Institute. Over the decades, the TMC has become synonymous as a place where innovative, leading-edge research is developed, saving lives and changing the face of modern medicine.

business,” says Jankowski. “And nearly eleven percent of the jobs in the Houston region are in the health care sector. The TMC keeps expanding, it keeps improving and expanding the work it does. That brings massive international prestige to Houston.”

Perdue predicts as the TMC continues

Yet there’s also a trickledown effect to the ever-growing TMC. As more jobs are created in the health care fields, more professionals are arriving here to work within the TMC boundaries. Those employees are buying homes, dining out, and spending money on retail services, all of which helps local businesses.

“The TMC really drives the local property

market,” Perdue says. “Along with Downtown, it’s one of the region’s largest centers of employment, and as it grows, I think you’ll see property values increase there a little faster than the rest of the city. The Texas Medical Center will really continue to be strong for the greater Houston economy.”
