By that time, the noise, pollution and crowds downtown had sparked an exodus of “the Magnolia City’s” elite families. Streetcars and automobiles shortened commutes, enabling downtown workers to enjoy the wide open spaces and brand-new homes in places such as the Houston Heights (founded 1891) and the scattered collection of little enclaves we now know collectively as Montrose, whose origins can be traced back to 1911.

iver Oaks may, um, Hogg the limelight when it comes

to natural beauty, national renown and sheer number of multi-million dollar listings, but nowhere else in Houston can match the Museum District’s blend of urban sophistication and gorgeous residential neighborhoods. Here’s what one New York Times writer had to say in 1987 about South Boulevard in Broadacres: “To stand at the foot of South Boulevard in Houston is to look down what is perhaps the most magnificent residential street in America. Staged rows of soaring live oaks form the vaulted arches of a great Gothic cathedral over a grassy esplanade, lined with imposing yet graceful mansions from the 1920s by such eminent architects of their day as John F. Staub and Birdsall P. Briscoe.”

And you are blocks away from the nerve center of Houston’s high

culture, or at least most of the high culture that does not take place on stages. (But not all: Miller Outdoor Theatre fields an amazing free program on its sheltered stage of everything ranging from blues to zydeco to opera and Shakespeare, year-in and year-out.) The MFAH has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 91 years, with new wings added to the original Caroline Wiess Law building in 1958 and 1974, and the addition of the Audrey Jones Beck building in 2000. Under its auspices, the Glassell School of Art opened in 1978 and the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden in 1986.

Amazing spaces devoted to art, science and history erupted

The Museum of Natural Science moved to its current location in 1964, and has since added a giant-screen movie theatre in 1989, the Cockrell Butterfly Center in 1994, and the first-rate 30,000-sq ft Morian Hall of Paleontology just three years ago. Catty-corner across Montrose is its longest-standing modernist competitor, the Contemporary Arts Museum, built in 1972. Houston got its third great art museum in 1987, when the Menil Collection opened in its world-renowned Renzo Piano edifice, full of great works of surrealism and tribal art. Its campus is also home to the distingushed, somber place of pondering and meditation, the Rothko Chapel. Former Contemporary Arts Museum director Jim Harithas has since set up another showcase for edgy, often political works at his Station Museum on Alabama Street.

McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science in 1996, which now attracts 180,000 visitors each year.

most somber of area museums: the Holocaust Museum Houston, the fourth largest such facility in America. The museum is home to a repository of volumes, films and oral histories on the Shoah and more general Jewish-European history, educational and exchange programs fostering tolerance, and a permanent collection highlighted by the personal testimonies of Houston-area Holocaust survivors.

The Buffalo Soldiers Museum is America’s only museum

dedicated to African-American fighting men and women in the United States; it’s specific focus is on the black cavalrymen who fought the Native American tribes in the West in the late 19th Century, while the Houston Museum of African American Culture takes a more general approach and hosts an amazing program of live events each year.

Along with New York, Washington, San Francisco and Los

Angeles, Houston is one of five American cities home to an Asia Society museum and events center. Designed by Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi, the limestone, wood and glass structure was completed in 2012 and ranks as a quietly stunning addition to the ever-evolving district Its cultural offerings such as demonstrations of Central Asian musical instruments, Chinese ballet, and the mystical arts of Tibetan monks enriching the area immensely.

All that plus the John C. Freeman Weather Museum, the rapidly-

growing Houston Zoo, a world-class genealogical research center in the form of the Houston Public Library’s Clayton Library, and the Texas Czech Center, a repository and memorial of all things TexasBohemian.
