THE LATEST IN ART, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN PLASTIC FURNITURE, WOOD TOWERS AND CERAMICS ARE HOT

Clockwise from top: A proposed wooden skyscraper in Tokyo, a Flotsam table by Brodie Neill—and the fragments of plastic it's made from—and a ceramic pitcher by Natalie Herrera.

for what's new and cool in the worlds of art, architecture and design? Below, the latest trends, unearthed: Looking ART

Last year, as fashion types posted pictures on Instagram of their weekends throwing clay, Vogue called the craft “the new yoga." Certainly there is a growing appetite for beautiful homewares and sculpture, made from organic materials and produced by a talented generation of new ceramists. Natalie Herrera is one such rising star. The graphic designer has taken the fundamentals she learned at the Rhode Island School of Design and applied them to a new medium. Her ceramics, wheel-thrown or hand-built, take on an angularity, structuraland graphic quality. “Most of the inspiration for my ceramics comes from architecture,” says Herrera, including Brutalist buildings in Colombia and parallel forms in New York City. Much of her art, created under the brand High Gloss, which she launched in 2013, has a practical use, such as stacking cups without handles that work to conserve cupboard space. More and more, though, she is being commissioned to create ceramic sculptural pieces. “Many of my friends have objects all over their home, a mini-museum of pieces,” she says. ARCHITECTURE

Europe’s Neolithic long house, a timber dwelling built around 6,000 B.C., was a solid home for as many as 30 people. Thousands of years later, the Romans developed timber framing; in China, ancient temples were usually built of wood. Fast-forward to 2018, and architects are bringing back wood for megatowers. Five times lighter than concrete, but with a comparable strength-per-weight ratio, high thermal performance, and qualities that make it pleasant to work with and live with—nontoxic, calming, organic and inherently beautiful—wood is increasingly being used in creative ways for pioneering construction projects. New types of engineered timber enable architects to build bigger and higher. Cross-laminated timber, or CLT, is produced by layering sections at right angles, while hybrid CLT combines the material with steel. Earlier this year, Sumitomo Forestry unveiled plans for a 350-meter, 70-story hybrid skyscraper in Tokyo, which will be the world’s tallest wooden building. DESIGN

Designers are coming up with ingenious solutions to recycle what has already been discarded, particularly plastic. Ocean terrazzo is the invention of furniture designer Brodie Neill, who was inspired to create a new take on traditional marble as a response to the plastic he saw damaging the coastline of his native Tasmania. Fragments of plastic that washed up on beaches are being used to create eye-catching furniture, such as the Flotsam table. And at furniture company Pentatonic, comfortable QR`X PUNV_` N_R P_RNaRQ b`V[T `\Sa =Yf»e N aReab_RQ SRYa f\b d\bYQ never guess used to be plastic. Even Ikea is at it; its Kungsbacka kitchen doors are made from recycled PET bottles. Clockwise from top: Sumitomo Forestry, Brodie Neill, Natalie Herrera/High Gloss

olt, Renfrew & Co., popularly known as Holt Renfrew or just Holt’s, isn’t merely a chain of upscale department stores: It’s a rich part of Canadian history. Holt 's was founded in 1837 as W.S. Henderson & Co., a modest hat shop in Quebec City, by Irish merchant William S. Henderson. Soon after, it was adding more merchandise to its inventory and expanding. By the late 19th century, the shop had changed hands and owners more than once and was known as G.R. Renfrew & Co. It was named “furriers in ordinary” to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. By 1901, the company had become Holt, Renfrew & Co. and went on to be furriers to Queen Alexandra, King Edward VII, King George V and Edward VIII. Holt’s had also begun expanding into Toronto and other Canadian locations, and in the 1930s established exclusive accounts with leading European designers. In 1947, it hosted Christian Dior, the world’s most famous designer at the time, when he was launching his “New Look” collection in his bid to reinstate French luxury fashion and femininity in the wake of World War II. Today, Holt Renfrew is controlled by the Selfridges Group, which has W. Galen Weston as chairman and also owns Selfridges in London. And over the years, the stores have become the No. 1 destination in Canada for luxury goods. LESS IS MORE MINIMALIST HOMES FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS By Iyna Bort Caruso

M

inimalism is design through simplicity—of form, colour, volume and detail—yet this aesthetic isn't simple to achieve. Go too far in one direction, and the result is cold, even sterile; cross the line the other way, and messiness begins. Hitting the sweet spot involves an architectural and decorative language of unity and repetition and the clever manipulation of space—not as an element to be »lled, but as one to be celebrated—as well as light. “Good minimalism recognises that light is integral to design,” says Trish Bragg of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty in Denver. “There has always been a passionate base of people who gravitate toward this style of home,” she notes. “Buyers feel they will live more simply, with less stress, in a minimalist home: less clutter, more room to breathe.” A property that Bragg represents uses minimalism to great eÞect. A 1 ,000-s^uare-foot residence built on private wooded acreage in the middle of the city, the Denver Art House, as it is known, is modern, symmetrical and conceived to maximize the beautiful Colorado sunlight. The home’s architect, Jim Olson, founding partner of Olson Kundig in Seattle, notes that “minimalist architecture frames what is important,” in this case, an impressive art collection, nature and light. “People want happy, inviting spaces that inspire them to live better lives,” says Bragg. “Minimalist architecture is a step in that direction.” New York-based writer Iyna Bort Caruso has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday and others.

THE WONDERS OF WALLPAPER 40

BREAK THE RULES

“People are scared of wallpaper, but the truth is there are no rules—you can add a modern wallpaper to a traditional home or add traditional wallpaper to a modern home, and either way you’ll have something you love. Embrace what you’ve got. Paper a dark room in a dark wallpaper to play up the space’s intimacy. And a small room can handle a bold pattern—it adds drama. FULLY COMMIT

“Ditch the accent wall—when wallpapering, it’s best to fully commit. Go big or go home. A varsity move is to paper the ceiling. A wallpapered ceiling turns a small space into a jewel box. MIX AND MATCH CAREFULLY

“When it comes to mixing patterns, let one of them be the star. If you’re going for a bold, large-scale pattern on the walls, the rest of the patterns in the space should be smaller in scale. THINK ABOUT ADJACENT SPACES

DESIGN OPTIONS SPAN FROM BASIC TO BOLD AND NEUTRAL TO COLORFUL

“The trend nowadays is for digitally printed paper, but I much prefer the oldfashioned way: screen-printed. When shopping for wallpaper, look for one that is screen-printed (like all of ours!) rather than digitally printed—it’s much more labor-intensive, but it’s worth it. The color is more saturated and the pattern is crisper. When it comes to wallpaper, you get what you pay for.

Breitling’s Navitimer, Omega’s Speedmaster, Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller and Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak—have cultivated enduring legacies that endow them with icon status. HOW TO TRANSLATE INSTA- DECOR TRENDS IN REAL LIFE

nstagrNZ V` Âź\\QRQ dVaU VZNTR` \S `\ZR `R_V\b`Yf Q_RNZf decor, and translating those trends into your home is a task Iworth tackling. For advice on how to do that, we asked 34-year-old designer and former Bravo TV host Taylor Spellman.

'MILLENNIAL PINK'

Maybe you didn’t know it by name, but this bubble-gummeets-powdery-pink hue has been not-so-quietly pervading popular culture. You’ve seen it everywhere in packaging, home goods, fashion, and, of course, decor. But we’d argue that moderation is the key in bringing the Instagram (and beyond!) trend toward pink into reality. Spellman’s Take: “Everyone is looking for inspiration in the form of bright, light, and uplifting, she says. For a client who wanted a pink nursery, Spellman felt pink would be better expressed in accents rather than throughout the whole room. And dimensions can be added using various gradients of the color, such as a fuchsia accent wall and patterned curtains balanced with softer-pink bedding and ottomans. She says this keeps the space “fun but not overpowering. SOUTHWESTERN 'SCAPE

Woven dream catchers, ceramic bull heads, animal-skin rugs, patterned textiles, cacti—you’ve likely come across various iterations of a Southwestern look with one thing in common:

all the aforementioned items coexisting in the same room. The RĂžRPa V` V[aR_R`aV[T N[Q RPYRPaVP Spellman’s Take: “It promotes a laid-back and welcoming aesthetic, which you can never go wrong with,â€? she says. “But it can easily be hokey and tacky if not done properly.â€? When it comes to trends, she adds, “I always err on the side of ‘less is more.’ I like the Southwestern aesthetic as an inspiration.â€? For a client’s New York City penthouse, Spellman pared down the look. She incorporated hints of a Southwestern ranch-like feel with earthy hues including camel, green and brown. Her animal-shaped rug doesn’t scream “animal,â€? thanks to modern black cowhide. As for wall accessories, Spellman achieved a textural look in a streamlined way by using rustic repurposed metal-framed mirrors and modern metal antlers. “The juxtaposition of being in New York while seeming like you are in Santa Fe was a real showstopper that resulted in very happy clients,â€? she says.

Southwestern decor and "millennial pink" work on Instagram and beyond.

France's Burgundy area produces wines that offer “once-in-alifetime experiences.

62

THE ALLURE OF BURGUNDIES THESE WINES ARE RARE, EVER CHANGING —AND PRICEY

urgundy collectors are chasing an elusive high, and it has nothing to do with the wine’s alcohol content. B“It’s never the same wine twice, says Chicago-based master

sommelier Alpana Singh, who is the proprietor of three wineforward restaurants in Illinois. “Fickle, is how she describes the celebrated wine from Burgundy, France, in the east-central region of the country. “It’s always changing in the bottle, Singh, 41, says, so tastings can truly be once-in-a-lifetime experiences. WHY IT’S SPECIAL

Red burgundies are made with Pinot Noir grapes, while white burgundies use Chardonnay grapes. They can be very hard to get, and older bottles are rare and expensive. Production has always been limited, Singh explains, and market pressure has made supply tighter. All that adds to the wine’s legendary status. There are four tiers of Burgundy wine: grands crus, premiers crus, village appellations, and regional appellations (appellations indicate the area where the grapes were grown). Grand cru is the most rare, thus the most coveted and expensive, with some bottles priced in the tens of thousands of dollars. “It’s the ultimate collector’s wine, says Singh, who became the youngest female master sommelier when she achieved the title at 26. HOW MUCH IT COSTS

=_VPR` S\_ Ob_Tb[QVR` `Xf_\PXRa N` O\aaYR` ORP\ZR UN_QR_ a\ [Q Singh says when she started out buying burgundies as a sommelier at Chicago’s acclaimed Everest Restaurant in 2000, she had several $140 to $150 bottles on the list. While buying for her three restaurants—the Boarding House and Seven Lions in Chicago and Terra & Vine in Evanston, Ill.—some of those vintages could be $350 or $500 a bottle, she says. HOW TO SERVE IT

The older the vintage, the more fragile it is, Singh explains. And one way to protect an investment in a bottle is to do nothing. Decanting the wine “accelerates the opening process and could kill the perfume‌It’s very delicate,â€? she says. Instead of decanting, Singh recommends serving Burgundies in globe glasses, which just slightly opens them up. SUGGESTED PAIRINGS

Alpana Singh is a master sommelier.

“If it grows together, it goes together, she says. Morel and other mushrooms, cream sauces and certain cheeses from the Burgundy region, which tends to have rich cuisine, are good pairings, as are gamey meats like duck and lamb, and even seafood. “Oysters are brilliant with Burgundy, Singh says.

FOR MOON JUICE FOUNDER, WELLNESS STARTS IN THE KITCHEN

Moon Juice

THE ENTREPRENEUR AND AUTHOR MAKES THE PRACTICAL PRETTY

manda Chantal Bacon, founder of juice and supplement company Moon Juice, puts wellness at the center of everyA thing. And that, not surprisingly, starts in the kitchen.

“The kitchen is such a centerpiece to my world,â€? the 35-year-old entrepreneur says. “The kitchen in my current house really spoke to me,â€? says the Los Angeles–based Bacon, who launched Moon Juice in 2011 after years of researching medicinal foods to treat her own chronic illness. “It was big and open with windows looking out to nature. She has a hot-water dispenser next to the sink, which “has made me drink so much more tea and hot-water tonics than I ever did before,â€? she says. And she stores staples for her tonics— like cayenne pepper and turmeric—in pretty containers. “I want to make beautiful the things I’m going to use and make room for them, instead of putting them away because they are ugly.â€? She keeps that principle in mind when designing labels for her own products, a line of dusts, powders, and pantry staples promising to “optimizeâ€? beauty, brain, and spirit, among other things. TAYARI JONES’ FAVORITE SUMMER READS WRITER OF AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE LIKES STORIES WITH ‘TEETH’

lthough An American Marriage is Tayari Jones’ fourth book, the author wasn’t prepared for its reception. The story, in A which the relationship of the protagonists, Roy and Celestial,

is torn apart by a wrongful conviction and incarceration, is certainly dramatic. And the book, which came out earlier this year, was described in The New York Times as “beautifully written,â€? full of “the everyday poetry of the African-American community that begs to be heard.â€? Then came Oprah Winfrey’s selection of An American Marriage for her book club. “I would have anticipated that it would be all jumping up and Q\d[ Oba Va´` N `VT[VÂťPN[a _R`]\[`VOVYVaf ² 7\[R` aRYY` Reside. Of this memoir of growing up in Rhode Island, in a family entangled with the mob, Jones says, “I wanted to eat it! I was going on an Oprah cruise and was mad at myself for having read the whole book on the plane. I’m a Southerner, so [Rhode Island] felt like such an exotic place. “It’s a re-envisioning of the goddess Circe, who detains Odysseus on his way back home. I was impressed by how contemporary it was, despite being set in 400 B.C. It turns out that goddesses have work-life balance issues like the rest of us. I devoured it—I am not a goddess, but me and Circe have a lot of the same problems. That’s what made the writing such a miracle.
