Hi! My Name is
Zaelly -Rose!
I live in St.Kitts and Nevis, which is in the Caribbean. Just like you some of my favourite things to do are playing games with my friends watching T.V. but I also like telling stories. ‘Sugar City- St.Kitts’ and ‘Queen City-Nevis’, the twin island federation that I call home is surrounded by not just one; but two Oceans. Both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are fortunate to wash our shores. Previously known to the native Kalinago/Carib and Taino/Arawak *Indian Tribes as Liamuigua which means Fertile lands, St. Kitts is a guitar shaped island.
Our Lady of the Snows or Nevis for short is the name that Columbus gave to the smaller circular island we also know as Oualie, which means Land of Beautiful Waters. To commemorate and forever celebrate our Federation’s Independence from Great Britain in 1983, the people of St.Kitts and Nevis chose several symbols that represent the Spirit and Ideals of its’ Citizens.… We have adopted both flora and fauna as physical representations of our Country and Culture. We will learn more about these symbols in this book.
St.Kitts and Nevis is my favourite place to live. I am never bored and have friends and schoolmates to play with.
My biggest dream is to be a Storyteller just like my Granny. I write stories about 6 of my animal friends. You will meet and learn about us in this book!
Meet Miss’ Market Friends!

What makes me so Special?? I can make myself Invisible. The colourful splotches on my body can change so that I blend into my surroundings! It’s called Camouflage.

Green alludes to the country’s fertile land, Red evokes the fight for Freedom against Slavery and Colonialism. Yellow stripes represent the Sunshine the islands enjoy all year round. Black symbolizes the people’s African origins. The Two, White Stars on the Black Band symbolize the twin islands -as well as“Hope and Liberty.”

Hello! I’m Tali! I am a 6 year old Green Turtle and I was hatched on the sands of Frigate Bay, in St.Kitts and Nevis. I love being underwater, diving for Shells and exploring the Coral Reefs that frame our Coastlines. Why am I so Special?? My Shell doubles as a Backpack where I can carry all the amazing trinkets I find when I go deep sea diving or exploring the beach. It’s a whole different world under the ocean waves!I can also hold my breath for a really long time. I enjoy floating on my shell, watching clouds change shape as they cross the sky above me.
O’ Land Of Beauty Written and composed by
Kenrick Georges
Verse 1
O Land of Beauty! Our country where peace abounds, Thy children stand free On the strength of will and love. With God in all our struggles, Saint Kitts and Nevis be A Nation bound together With a common destiny. Verse 2
As stalwarts we stand, For justice and liberty, With wisdom and truth We will serve and honour thee. No sword nor spear can conquer, For God will sure defend, His blessings shall forever, To posterity extend.

Men’s National Dress of St. Kitts andNevis
St. Kitts and Nevis’ Official National Wear reflects the true “Caribbeaness” of its people. A combination of African and European influences which have shaped the history of St. Kitts and Nevis is evident in both the male and female outfits. A straw hat trimmed with madras offered protection from the hot day's sun. The short sleeved, v-neck jack shirt trimmed with madras is made from off-white cotton. The design is similar to traditional shirts worn by Africans. The beige cotton, ankle length pant is a reflection of the local fabrics that were commonly used during the colonial period.

Hi my name is Zsa-Zza and I am a 5 year old Honey Bee living in St. Kitts and Nevis. I love String Band Music and I plan on starting a String Band with a few of my friends. When I’m not busy finding the best Flowers, and collecting Nectar to use for Honey making,I enjoy giving Island Tours. What makes me so Special?? Well, my Stinger is also a detachable Telescope, which definitely helps me to locate the most delicious and colourful flowers on the island.I love to dance and my favourite time of the year is Carnival season in St.Kitts and Nevis; it’s an amazing mix of sounds sights and smells.
The custom of African women is to wrap their heads for protection. The full dress is an off-white cotton, with a corset top, an ankle length with a wide flare petticoat bottom. The beige cotton sleeves are short and puffed by using the drawstring. A short lap skirt made from crocus is worn over the main dress to protect it from dirt. The madras "Cane Soda Wrap", which was used to carry soda while fertilizing sugar cane, is draped around the waist. The crocus drawstring bag was a safe way for women to secure their money. Outfits for both Men and Women were created by the design team of 4 people listed on the next page..

My name is Marlee the Monkey and I live in St. Kitts and Nevis. I usually hang out in the hills of Nevis Peak or Mount Liamuiga. I also love relaxing in the Acacia (Kusha) or Mango Trees in the Lower Woodlands on either island. I’m very good at Climbing, and I practise Flipping and Leaping everyday, because I am going to be a Gymnast and compete in the olympics when I get older. I can climb to the very top of any Tree! My tail is also a Lasso that I use to swing through tree branch. It’s like having an extra Arm!

The National Flower of St. Kitts and Nevis is found on the Poinciana or Flamboyant Tree. It is named after Monsieur de Poincy, the first French Governor of St. Kitts. It’s umbrella-shaped crown, fernlike leaves, and huge red and yellow clusters of flowers are very distinctive. The tree also bears long, black seedpods locally referred to as "Shack-Shack", due to the sound they make when they are shaken. The seeds enclosed within the pods are used in many classroom art projects and can also be found in local artwork around the islands.
