hen I reflect on what we have achieved I feel blessed to be part of such an amazing community. SIS is a learning community that is aligned, driven and deeply passionate. This year we performed a 360 review of our mission. Missions are central to who we are at our core, they define you, help you when you are lost and align you. I am deeply thankful to everyone who took the opportunity to involved themselves with the review of our mission. I feel we have really captured the essence of SIS. “We are a learning community, passionate about providing an International Education, which inspires and encourages learning and intercultural understanding. We facilitate self discovery and the development of unique gifts and talents. We promote service learning as a force for good in the world”. So how successful have we been at aligning to our mission? From the eyes of the Apple team and the International Certificate team, very successful. Both were blown away by our alignment between what we say we do and what we do. So much so, that we have achieved an outstanding status and become the first and only Apple Distinguished School in Spain! This year we have seen so many amazing opportunities for our students to explore their gifts and talents. From the sports field to the stage, the classroom to the art gallery, the service trips to the extra curricular clubs. The passion of our students,

the desire to learn and grow is a force that we must support and nurture. Thank you to the dedicated and inspirational staff who work so hard to provide opportunities for our students. The Kindred Project has taken a real turn in its transition to be a student led NGO. With the leadership of the team and the vision of the students we have made great headway to be a school which is pushing the boundaries. Whilst presenting at the IB conference, we were surprised by the number of schools who were interested in what we do and how we do it. The IB are using us as a case study school as they look to embed global citizenship within schools. We use Connected Learning as the glue to marry all of our activities, we have introduced Mindfulness to help develop our effective learner driver, a Gifted and Talented programme to support our effective learner driver, We are making great headway with the International Certificate to support the development of global citizens, increased the range of learning pathways and subjects for our students through our Flexible Learning driver (including the new sports programme ACES) and we continue to embed IT into our curriculum to make learning and teaching more efficient and effective. I hope you enjoy the walk through the events of the year. Thank you all for your help in creating this really quite magical place. To the parents for your trust, to the students for your commitment to our values and to the members of staff, who place students at the centre of everything we do.

Message from the head of primary

Another action packed year has come to an end for our Primary School. A year packed full of new challenges, experiences and achievements. When reflecting back on this academic year I would like to start by acknowledging and thanking our team of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff. Without their dedication and constant strive for improvement our students would not have achieved all that they have. Thank you all, for inspiring and guiding our students along their way. A special mention goes to Miss Constanza, Miss Dani, Mr James, Miss Lola, Mr Luis, Mr Matt, Miss Marta, Miss Marta and Miss Sara who all joined the Primary team this year. Your contributions to our team have been valued and have helped towards making this such a successful year.Once again as a Primary School we have grown. Over this year, not only have we welcomed around 125 new students (including our EC1 cohort of 41) and 9 new teaching staff, but we have increased and improved our learning spaces. P5 and P6 moved out of the Sue Jenkins building and took over the Timber building. Combined with new resources and equipment these additional learning spaces have allowed us to continue to develop our curriculum programme and provide ever improving learning opportunities for all our students. Congratulations must go to our students, without them our school would not be what it is. Throughout the year we have watched them open their hearts and minds to the joy of learning, discover their strengths, develop their skills and identify their passions. Whether it be within their classes, out and about around the school campus, on out of school excursions or representing our school in various sporting or expressive arts events, our students have continually demonstrated and modelled our school values. Well done Primary! You should feel extremely proud of all that you have accomplished.

16 SIS Yearbook • 2017

Realistically there are too many events and memories from this year to be able to reflect on them all, however I would like to highlight a few. Firstly, our Primary Student Council (PSC) and Primary Kindred Project Club (PKPC), who have led initiatives that are really making a difference to our community and to communities around the world. Their work towards organising and supporting the Family Fun Day and Playing For Change Contest shows how we can really make a difference by taking action. Other highlights have to include the expressive arts productions at Christmas by Early Childhood, P1 and P2, and recently the P3-P6 performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - The Play. Moving to sports, we have seen many students take part in the internal sports days and swimming galas, as well as many older Primary students taking part in external sporting events. Within the curriculum another successful Student Led Conference Day was held in April followed by an impressive P6 Exhibition. Those who attended this event left with a lot of food for thought surrounding the issue of stereotyping. Well done P6! As we bring this year to a close let us focus on our P6 cohort. For these students their journey in the Primary School is complete. For 18 of them their SIS journey started back in EC1 and EC2 but for all of them it has now come to an end, their transition into the Middle School is about to begin. Over the years it has been a pleasure watching them develop and progress. On behalf of myself and all the Primary teachers, I would like to wish our P6 class of 2017 the best of luck and happiness in their MYP adventure. I wish the entire Primary community a wonderful and relaxing summer. Enjoy a well-earned rest! Refuel your batteries! I look forward to seeing you in September!

2016-17 has been a remarkable year for Sotogrande International School’s continued evolution. Our thriving school continues to grow from strength to strength. As part of our evolution, the school community spent a great deal of time during the past year reviewing our mission, values and educational goals. Our target was to summarise our way of being, our way of behaving and our way of constantly improving; all of which is perfectly exemplified within this 2017 Yearbook. With an expanding school community, we have been able to offer a greater variety of inspirational learning opportunities than ever before. Our regular assemblies gave an opportunity for our middle school students to celebrate, recognise and appreciate peers’ academic, pastoral, musical, artistic, theatrical, sporting and service learning successes. Perhaps the most exciting aspect for me is observing an increasing number of students who are continually willing to push boundaries and take risks whilst striving to their find passion and purpose. Sotogrande students are often described as confident, independent and polite young learners who are not afraid to make mistakes, then learn from them. This observation is a tribute to the core philosophy of our teaching and learning. Higher standards were witnessed and celebrated in many public events, such as the M5 Personal Project and M3 Community Project. This year’s originality and quality of topics were quite incredible in terms of using education as a force for good. The immediate impact that some products had on the local and international communities was breathtaking. To name but a few; M5 examples ranged from creative presentations to younger students, promo videos, educational tuition videos, website designs, cookery blogs, fund raising events, children’s books, CD’s and many more! The sustainable M3 solar project for NCLC in Uganda was a perfect example of originality and entrepreneurship; and the spectacular M3 dinner and fashion show not only raised awareness, but also embraced and celebrated the many differences between human beings, as well as raise a vast amount of money for great causes. The future is also very exciting with our excellent P6 Exhibition students tackling the sensitive issue of stereotyping, as can be seen in the attached pictures, where I vehemently argued against the ‘tongue in cheek’ stereotype that “Blondes are dumb”!! One quote from a parent; “I wish learning was as fun as this when I went to school.” So many day-to-day examples of amazing work also go unnoticed, such as our thriving 1:1 student mentoring programme, where our older students often help our younger primary students as part of their Service Learning. The positive social and educational impact that these experiences have on mentors and mentees should never be under-estimated. Growth has also enabled us to welcome many outstanding new teachers, who have taken little time to contribute and further enrich our experiential learning ethos. Just a couple of numerous exciting new initiatives include Mr .Woolley’s sky-diving to learn Physics and Mrs. McCann’s popular debating clubs for English Language and Literature. The number of flexible pathway subject electives that our MYP students are able to choose from has increased to another all-time high. Film Studies was introduced last September and German Language Acquisition and Computer Science will be introduced next September. Extended Science now has more than one group in each year group. Interdisciplinary units are now assessed from M1 through to M5. Although challenging, the IDUs have certainly been fulfilling and an exciting, different and popular learning initiative for our students; the M3 Maths with Science Murder Scene in the lab and the M5 Individual and Societies with Language and Literature in the Bugsy Malone Prohibition ‘Speakeasy’ venue were inspirational. University and Careers guidance for individual student pathways from M1 through to D2 and beyond has also dramatically increased in depth this year, helping our middle school students make choices, as well as plan and prepare their future journeys. Experiential learning trips & events continue to be at the heart of our successful teaching and learning. They act as ‘anchors’ where students can readily recall facts from a variety of practical, hands on experiences. Memorable highlights included M1s to Pequeña África (Jimena), Tarifa, Casares Castle and a working farm in Tesorillo; M2s to the Alcazaba (Málaga), Carteya (San Roque), Castellar Zoo and the SOS refugio (Los Barios); M3s to Picasso Museum and Málaga port, Isla Mágica (Sevilla); M4s to Diario Sur (Málaga), Hogar Betania (La Línea); M5’s to Málaga (Arts and Language) and Industrial Conservera de Tarifa (Humanidades). Under the leadership of Eliza Cherry, our Duke of Edinburgh Award opportunities have increased and participation rates have dramatically increased. Mr. Kearney also continues to lead by example by coordinating challenging and fun wakeboarding trips, as well as continuing to join in and help coach our keen basketball players.

Message from the head of middle school

2017 favourite trips and events included MUN conferences (Copenhagen, Prague and here at SIS), Uganda and Ecuador Trips, European Film Festival in Geneva, Día de Andalucia celebrations, Sierra Nevada ski trips, bonding trips throughout Andalucía, as well as SIS Poetry Day and the inter-school creative writing and mathematics competitions. Our IT team, including staff and students, had a spectacularly successful year, culminating in hosting the Apple Summit, after being awarded the prestigious accolade of becoming an Apple Distinguished School. In sport, our teams continue to be even more competitive and successful than ever. In cross country, we were crowned as regional champions for the first time ever; we achieved our highest ever points total in the regional track and field athletics at Cartema, finishing as runners-up out of 14 schools; we also entered more teams and won more trophies in different age groups than ever in regional and international football tournaments in Spain, Italy and Portugal; Pedro Marin Santander continued our proud tradition of nurturing national golf champions; we hosted touring sports teams from Egypt, U.K. and Spain at our San Roque Campus. Our inter school and inter house triathlons and duathlons were hugely successful. The Polar Bear Challenge has also now become a well-established fun event with a huge number of crazy participants and lots of money raised for excellent causes. In Visual Arts, the quality of work was phenomenal. Once again, our Arts Department received external recognition in the prestigious district Young Artist competition, where 4 of our students were shortlisted for prizes and Loreto Villegas Maestro won the overall prize for age 14 and under. This year we were treated to a wealth of Drama, culminating in the spectacular production of Bugsy. That performance was preceded by numerous drama events including the ISTA Theatre trip, M5 High School Musical, Lamda examinations and the SIS Theatre Festival. As always, our musicians continued to offer the school community a vast array of opportunities to show off their talents; Back to School party, Fireworks Night, El Cañuelo Trip, Christmas Choir Tour, Bunker Bar’s Bonanza for Uganda, D1 Soto Smash DJ night, Indie Night and many others. Our end of year celebratory award and prize giving assemblies gave the whole school community another opportunity to witness the sheer depth and variety of artistic talent that exists at Sotogrande. With an increasing student role, our facilities and resources are also expanding and improving. Heating the swimming pool has long been an ambition of our school. In April, much to the delight of our ‘warm water swimmers’, we finally achieved our goal. When the telescopic roof is completed next term, we will be swimming throughout the year. Inspirational and motivational guest speakers are often memorable experiences for students and this year was no exception. Some of our visitors included memory world record breaker, David Thomas; ex-SIS teachers and our good friends, Dave and Judy Batten travelled from Uganda to thank SIS for everything we do to help improve the lives of so many children in Africa. Similarly, Hassan Edderjoune (president of the Tiwizi Association in Asni, Morocco) visited us to enjoy our Kiss the Casbah dinner and live music evening. We also welcomed a large group of mature students from the Netherlands for the GCP Power Day, which was an incredibly emotional and powerful event; The Kindred Project ran some powerful and fascinating sessions on Cultivating Courageous Compassion led by Ven. Robina Courtin, a world renown Buddhist nun; Mrs. Sofia Marban also talked about Mindfulness to our younger middle school students; our students enjoyed Yoga classes to increase positivity and focus, as well as reduce stress; and our older middle school students were given insightful advice from three professional specialists about substance abuse and making correct decisions. Sarah Lando (a member of the Canada-based Powerful Youth Academy) visited SIS to provide an exceptionally useful leadership workshop to our Student Council. Positive change often has to emerge from within. On behalf of the whole school community, I would like to thank our Student Council, who under the enthusiastic leadership of Pablo Rodriguez Lopez, have taken giant steps towards positive and relevant changes by sharing innovative ideas and attending a variety of meetings to ensure that the voice of the student body is heard. Finally, our expanding end of year Alumni event was another highlight for me. It was a great opportunity for past and present students, parents and teachers to catch up with each other. It also cemented the fact that Sotogrande International School plays a key role in helping our students to thrive and prosper; to become independent, creative, robust, internationally minded adults with shared values. Although we are sad to bid “Farewell” to our leavers, we are extremely content in the knowledge that we have provided them with the essential tools and skills necessary to step into an uncertain, but exciting future full of opportunities and challenges. Have a wonderful, fulfilling summer and challenge yourself by doing or learning something new!

When I reflect on the past year in the Upper School, I continue to be impressed by the commitment of students, teachers and parents working collaboratively to make learning at SIS the best it can possibly be. Our suite of programmes offer the flexibility, with breadth and depth, that allows our students to pursue their passions whilst gaining an excellent academic grounding for their futures. We have had another amazing year in Diploma and the SIS International Baccalaureate programmes continue to provide a truly exceptional preparation for our students as they enter higher education and life beyond. In addition the SIS High School Diploma offers an alternative to students who wish to take a different pre-university route. An exciting new initiative for elite sportsmen and sportswomen is the SIS Upper School ACES programme. This two year International A level programme is taught between 3:00pm and 7:00pm each afternoon to allow students to participate in sports training during the mornings. We have started in a small way and expect this programme to blossom and grow in the coming years. Our Graduating Class of 2017 have completed their IB exams, had their graduation dinner and finally graduated from SIS in a very personal and moving celebration on 26th May. The Diploma classes are growing apace and our challenge at the graduation ceremony is to keep the personal touch that SIS is so renowned for. A special thanks goes to Ms. Tracey Maes and her team of D2 advisors who have guided, coached and mentored the class of 2017 to be the best they can be. We expect the class of 2017 to achieve another set of excellent IB examination results and we have focused on providing in-depth examination preparation for students. Oxford Study Courses, a well respected and experienced IB study skills and revision provider, came into school just before Easter to provide a bespoke programme of two-day revision courses in subjects selected by the students. These

sessions had the benefit of providing a targeted focus on examination revision and techniques under the tutelage of external IB experts and were well received by students. Diploma students have benefitted from many curricular and extra-curricular trips including Model United Nations, Theatre ISTA trip, History London trip, the CAS bonding trip to Tarifa, the CAS trip to Asni, the football tournament in Portugal and both science and geography field trips. As always it has been a packed year, full of opportunities for students to get involved and make a difference both within our community and in the wider world. In the next few months the Class of 2018 will embark on the final phase of their time at SIS. They will be completing course work, a 4000 word research essay, all of their CAS commitments, mock and final examinations and, not least, deciding their future paths and making applications to colleges and universities. Finally, in September, the diploma team will be welcoming the next cohort of students, arriving from M5 onto the DP programme. These students can look forward to lots of stimulating and interesting learning, a myriad of CAS opportunities including two fantastic experiential trips, curriculum trips and projects and also lots of homework! I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the dedication of the SIS teachers and advisors, who unstintingly give their time and expertise to ensure that our students have the best possible school experience and preparation for life beyond school. I wish everybody at SIS a fabulous holiday and look forward to another fantastic year in 2017-18. ¡Felicitaciones a la Clase del 2017!

“I’m such a mess” - Jake Beaumont “That’s vile” - Jack Wilkes “Adam how did you miss the goal from there ?” - Everyone “Books get me girls” - Jack Burgess “Un medio de queso por favor”

I first attended the school in 2002 when I was only three years old. I have been through every year group going from nursery to the end of IB. I have been in school alongside Adam, Mia and Maribel since nursery. My favourite classes in school have been P.E and Art. I am a sporty student and have spent most of my time in school playing football down on the pitch whether it was during break or lunch or during a P.E lesson. I have many memories of my time in SIS going from seeing Joseph hit Kevin in the head with a football and see his glasses go flying across the pitch to crazy hair days. However my fondest memories of my time in SIS would have to be relaxing with friends and winning the Mediterranean cup and ISA Portugal tournament two years in a row. Future plans Going to university in the UK to study architecture.

Andrea Carmona Benitez “No es feo, es abstracto” “I am t-rekt” “Me muero, me mato...” “It’s brilliant”

My name is Andrea Carmona Benítez and I have been studying at SIS for almost fifteen years. I have never felt uncomfortable while at school and feel that I have the necessary confidence with all of my teachers, having a good relationship with all of them, that I can share and ask them practically anything. This is an aspect that has shaped my everyday school experience, as it defines how I managed to cope with the stressful IB course. SIS has been where I have made my best friends and learned to be open-minded as well as achieved and gone through the most defining years of my life. I can clearly remember every opportunity I have had to make our community a better place, and I sincerely thank the school for such fascinating events. Future plans I am planning on studying law in Madrid, where I will have the opportunity of exploring the career and venture towards other countries with the help of my university. After that, I also plan to expand my borders as much as possible, and discover what I like most. Law, for me, is an essential element in maintaining a world of order and justice, since the question of ‘right or wrong?’ arises in everyday life. I believe that I will be able to achieve this career path successfully due to the school’s endless support, companionship and help in my decision-making throughout my extensive experience at the SIS. Since I was a child, I have had great influences from my family about this career pathway and I have always received support from my friends and school about this. I would have achieved nothing if it weren’t for my parents, who I thank with all my love.

Pablo Dubru It makes no difference to me… PABLO MY PHONE! - Jake Yeah man, amazing! - Me What lesson do we have now? Don’t know, but it’s either maths or physics, its always maths or physics - Me all the time ¿Pablo, se enfadara tu madre si no voy a clase? Franco everyday ¡Pero Pablo, 1 mas 3 mas 1 es 4! - Teresa

Well, guys, its true, school does end! Seems like it never will, when you have to study for your MYP exams, but a couple of months ago (When I realised I had my finals in a couple of weeks and I still had sooo much to study) it suddenly hit me that it did end. Even though I am delighted to finally leave home and school, there are still many memories from SIS that I will never forget. The first day I stepped into SIS, I would describe myself as a shy and introverted kid, and you have no idea of how scared I was to go to an English speaking school without being able to speak a word. To be honest, my biggest fear was having to go to the toilet and not being able to ask the teacher. But now that I take my last step as a student, I would describe myself as a confident person who is able to survive more than two days out of home without finding myself with no food to eat. Even though I have learnt maths, physics and many other subjects, I am glad that this school also taught me how to live a life. Then trips came around, which did make things more fun. The Doñana trip is the one I remember the best. I can still remember Ms Maes breaking into my room shouting “WAKE UP!”. I never figured out how she did it, since we had the key to our apartment and there weren’t any copies… Or camping in Tarifa, where each and every inch of the tent would be full of rubbish and sweets. The changes from PYP to MYP and finally to IB were always welcome. Reaching the next step towards the end of school always felt good, and when you thought of yourself as ‘the oldest in primary’ you couldn’t help but feel important. One of the most iconic moments was when we got to secondary and finally were allowed to go on the football pitch in M1, where we felt like the kings of break time just because we were allowed to go play football with the older students. You also make great bonds with your peers and other year groups, with whom we played football at lunch time and the endless knock out games with the year above us. I would just like to thank everyone that has been part of this journey, my friends who I will never forget, my teachers for putting up with me (which I know is not easy, sorry Ms Maes) and specially my parents for supporting me.

176

Future plans Go to university I guess. I keep hearing they will be the best years of my life, so I have to see it for myself! I’ll be going either to the Netherlands, Scotland or staying in Spain. My plans are to go to the best uni and start studying electrical engineering to be a useful person in society!

“tan importante que me lo apunto “ - Marta “wait, wait, wait!! Me first because I’m the most important “ - Lauren Me to Nicki - “How long did it take you to do it??” Maria - “Two nights and a bottle of champagne”

I came to this school at the age of 15, speaking only French with no knowledge whatsoever as to what I was about to experience. I am so grateful for all the opportunities that have been given to me during the past 2 years and I will always remember this school as a place where I met amazing people and experienced so many new things. The friends I made here have been an important part of this journey and I have learned something special from everyone of them. I wouldn’t change any of my experiences (even with how much I struggled with English haha). Coming to Sotogrande was the best decision I have ever made. Future plans After graduating I plan on making the most of my summer by travelling and being back home with my friends and family. Before going to university, I have decided to take a gap year that will allow me to make the right decision about my choice of course and university, volunteer, eventually turn 18, travel and reinforce my understanding of Spanish.

“Guys. It’s not that this room is bigger than the other room. It’s just that that wall is further away from that wall.” - Jack Burgess “If I play this strategically, I can make all our feet touch.” - Jack Wilkes “Jake, you know what epilepsy looks like right?” - Sam Winkworth “Game of cards?” - Every lad throughout our time in Diploma “Do you think they’ve found the body? - Franco “Today is the first day of your life!” - Mr Wix (Everyday in advisory) “Summer after final exams is going to be legen-...wait for it...” The Legend Himself (Me) SMILE MORE - Roman Atwood

I don’t really know where to start. To sum up who I am, I see myself to be quite fun, sociable, banterous and just there for anyone that needs support. I joined the school in P6 (2009) after leaving what I felt like was home to me at the time but I came here and my life completely changed in the best way possible. The school and teachers and everyone involved is more than I ever could have asked for. I see my teachers more as friends and the relationships formed are perfect to ensure I become the best version of myself I can. Some of my favourite memories include the many El Cañuelo trips I’ve been on, the amount of different concerts I’ve performed at including two SotoRox events, the Morocco trip which is something I can’t describe in words and just the hundreds and thousands of memories that I’ve created. I will never forget all the memories I’ve created with the teachers, my friends and Franco. Future plans I plan on going to university in the UK, either Brighton or Manchester, to study Music Production. I’d like to work in the music industry in the future whether it’s performing or writing my own music, producing someone else’s music or literally anything to do with music. I also intend to carry on living my life like I have for the past year and a bit by just taking whatever life throws at me and finding the positives through the negatives.

15 years of my life in this school, 15 YEAAARSSS and it feels as if I had started yesterday!!! During the journey, marvelous people have supported me. The school has helped me develop my abilities and evolve as a person. The trips to Doñana, Tarifa, Castellar (the never ending slopes) and Asni have been amazing, especially this last one, where I managed to look at life from a different perspective. El día de Andalucía, where my friend Teresa and I danced a flamenco song using choreography that we had created, was an interesting experience. With time, I have started to gain more confidence in myself, and now my smile doesn’t abandon me. The teachers that have been with me since I started are fantastic, my classes with Miss Lourdes have been the best, and she has been fundamental. Miss Lourdes muchas gracias por ayudarme tanto, es usted maravillosa, nunca olvidaré nuestras clases ‘Barojianas’. I have made very special friendships and I am finishing the year with the best friends that I could have ever wished for. Many people have left and entered my life and I believe destiny is the precursor of everything. Future plans I am curious to know if what I am now going to write in this section is really going to happen, I just hope it does, for my own good. From there onwards I don’t know what the future is going to have prepared for me, I hope it has piety and that it brings me back to my precious Andalucia with a stable job, a healthy, joyful family and an aviary of birds!

My name is Hugo Gastone and I am an international student with triple nationalities. (American, Spanish, and French) Before coming to SIS in 2013, I was attending the Lycée Franco-Américain in New York. I arrived eager to learn with an open mind. From M4 to D2, I have experienced the most amazing moments with the most amazing individuals. Most of my fondest memories from SIS took place on school trips such as El Canuelo, D1 History Trip, Bonding Trips... These trips are among my favorite scholastic experiences which I most fondly remember because of the close and intimate environment that we created among the teachers and students taking part. Future Plans During the next 4 years, I will attend university either in the USA or Canada. Despite not knowing where I will be accepted, I have decided that I will graduate from either a pre-medical or biotechnological course in the hopes of working in the Health profession. I also plan on securing a job as a lifeguard during university with the help of my RLSS UK lifeguard certificate. Once I have completed my 4 year courses, I will take a gap year in order to travel around the world with my friends before commencing my professional life.

Thank you for being my guide and my mentor but at the same time letting me make mistakes. But above all, thank you for having opened me the doors to the whole world without changing my real self. Future plans I PLAN ON BEING SUCCESSFUL IN WHATEVER I BECOME, I DON’T LIKE THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE, THE ONLY PLAN I AM SURE ABOUT IS NOT HAVING TO MISS MY FRIENDS. SO... MUM, DON’T LOOK FOR ME THIS SUMMER, I WILL HOPEFULLY BE ALIVE.

Same as any other human being; I breathe, I eat, I see, I sleep... The only difference is that my name is Víctor, but biologicaly speaking, we are all the same.

Well... I joined SIS quite some time ago from Morocco for 2 years to try and improve my tennis here in Spain. My long-time dream was and still is to become a professional tennis player. I then moved to Switzerland for my parents work for two years but then decided that Spain was the best place for me to combine finishing my studies and playing tennis to be able to reach my dreams. Here at SIS I was able to be lucky enough to have such an amazing place to fulfill my dreams. Along the road I have met many new people and made many new friends here at SIS that have helped me and motivated me to continue fighting for my dream. Future plans In the future, after getting my diploma here at SIS. I plan to make my dream real and play professional tennis around the world starting small on the ITF Pro tour and then gaining enough points and experience to get to the high levels of playing tournament such as Monte-Carlo and Wimbledon. Keep an eye out for my name on Eurosport... ;)

A major contribution to my personal development has been my involvement in The Kindred Project. This constant involvement in KP, and access to these types of people - who inspire us to be better individuals for universal societies - teaches us that education is not only a tool for us, but helps us reciprocate our knowledge and understanding to others. Numerous priceless experiences I have embarked on, (Uganda, Ecuador, Switzerland and Morocco) stemmed from my involvement in KP and CAS. Showing me, that we take certain things for granted, and you can find happiness in unexpected places (Cham and Judo). CAS also encouraged me to participate in Sotorox, guitar and other remarkable experiences. Both CAS and KP allowed me to work with various people and societies - creating a never-ending desire to embark on future service experiences. We come back from these life journeys with a different scope - and we will always see the world in a different light and a newfound appreciation for the life that we live, the education we’ve been given and the people who surround us. The teachers at this school have made me believe in myself and motivated me to aspire to whatever I put my mind to. I am forever grateful for the support I have been given throughout my personal growth. Finally, the wakeboarding trips built bonds with important people who have encouraged me, and inspired me to become the person I am today. Thank you, always - for the support, dedication and inspiration you have given me. Furthermore, mentoring some amazing students in what became my “Mentoring Club”, helped me learn important elements of teaching, learning and facilitating resilience in the learning environment. All my classes. - Geo 2017. To my friends, an incredible group of people who have also inspired me during the last two years, and have made me laugh until I cried. Future plans I’d love to write a book one day - partially thanks to having some amazing role-model English teachers (both teaching me, and not) who have inspired my love for reading, writing, and literature. I am planning on volunteering in Kenya in June. If I don’t fall in love and stay there forever, I’m planning on going to university somewhere. At one point in my life you’ll probably find me back at KP. Working for the UN would be cool. I have no other fixed plans - and I’m open to learning SIS Yearbook • 2017 along the way.

I moved to this school when I was five years old. To be honest I don’t really remember many memories before this but I will always remember my first day in this school meeting my two new friends Euan and Mario. Then later hanging upside down on what was remembered as mine and Euan’s tree. I will also never forget all the cooking experiences I’ve had in this school. Making jam tarts in cooking club in year one and then later breakfast day in year five when we made every breakfast known to man but I was ill so I couldn’t eat any of it. Most of the trips I went on will be remembered as my greatest moments here with my two football tours to Italy and our very successful football tours to Portugal. Where we were runner-ups on the first year and consecutive champions over two years. Future plans I’m not allowed to say this but I’m joining MI7 and becoming a secret agent. If that doesn’t work out then I’ll become either a football manager or a donut man at the Feria. Or maybe all three at once but you’ll never know ;)

SIS has been my one and only school. During the last 15 years I have given my good mornings to the “Head-monster” or so I thought I heard, until I was eventually corrected: Headmaster. That made sense! I struggled my way through primary, being a misunderstood bilingual student, neither my parents nor my teachers could make sense of what I said, wrote or read. That was until Miss Juani awarded me my first 9/10 and from then on, I was not satisfied with any less. The few months of D2 are part of a vacuum no one can really recall. We simply become slaves of IB with too much to do, watching minutes go by… unable to do anything more productive than sleeping and finding way too many excuses for a night out. Nevertheless, my favourite things about SIS are all the NON-academic experiences I have dived into. The numerous trips from Huelva in Year 5, when the fire alarm apparently went off and none of my roommates noticed, Doñana, Granada, and the many memorable camping nights in Tarifa, where we would bring kilos of candy that the ants would eat before us. Learning to Ski and feeling exhausted on Ski Trips in Sierra Nevada, the History Trip to London where we miraculously managed not to lose Maria and getting to know the amazing people during the MUN trips in Dortmund and Budapest. Of course the unforgettable Asni CAS trip was an enriching life changing experience I would repeat anytime. Thanks to: • Google Translate and word-reference.com, Spark notes, Thesaurus.com, mathsisfun.com, YouTube crash courses and all those online chemistry explanations “for kids”, it wouldn’t have happened without you. • Every single one of my teachers. • SIS for making me who I am: cultivating the “Guiri” in me; as well as all DP2017. • Gracias Papa y Mama por no opinar y Lauri, suerte como hija única.

Future Plans Enjoy this summer: travelling, listening to good music and laughing with friends. Well I guess you all know that I’m a little bit crazy, love art and talk too much. Well after attending SIS I realised that all of the mentioned above are not my flaws on the contrary they are my strengths, that helped me to express myself, find everlasting friendships as well as the strong belief that I can reach all of my dreams if I just stay true to who I am. I have lots of amazing memories at SIS, such as going to Ecuador, taking part in the Moment, moving to Art from Chemistry, doing some art-vine therapy with Flora and spending some crazy time at MUN in Budapest. Although one of my fondest memories is moving to Lucia’s house this September, love you idiot, you made this year absolutely unforgettable starting form the moment when we jumped in to that pool fully clothed, to the singing opera while preparing sushi with cucumbers! Future plans: Quitting law in a year and opening an Art Gallery in Paris, somewhere near ChampsElysées. Learning French, how to play the trombone and to dance jazz, in order to start every day with a cup of coffee and eating a croissant with chocolate (that does not make you fat) overlooking Notre Dame de Paris, filling doom with happiness.

My name is Teresa and this is my story... I have been in this school for the past five years, and when I think of the small girl I was when I entered this school, it makes me laugh. To think of how worried I was of the scary assessments I had to do, and how lifechanging every exam seemed to be when in reality it wasn’t. In some aspects I am still that little girl, responsible and disorganized, but in others I have changed completely, I believe that this is the magic of growing up, you change and become a mature person. In SIS I have made many fond memories such as the never-ending meals where I could discuss any topic or my Diploma Chemistry lessons where experiments were always an adventure. I don’t think I will ever forget the Skype sessions I had to have after-school to make projects and to study, they have ensured my survival of diploma. I would like to thank my family, my teachers and my friends for this journey. Future plans: Study Pharmacy in an unknown location but first enjoy this summer :)

I’ve been in this school since reception I think, like 13 years now, and it has been all amazing, I mean, our school is the coolest, most teachers have always been quite chilled about everything, and we have always been quite free to do whatever. School for us has been like a place to come and hang out with your friends for a few hours, eat, and go home. My best memories of the school have been the trips with The Kindred Project to Uganda in M4 and to Ecuador in D1 as well as to Asni with all of the year group, also all of the school concerts in which I’ve participated, organising Sotorox in D1, all of the random adventures with my closest friends, and a lot of parties and unforgettable nights out. It has been great to have passed this stage of my life with all of my friends here at SIS, and Jake. I know that I would re-live it if I could. SIS has shown me a lot of great things during the years, I think that the way that the school has brought us up has opened our minds and was very influential to becoming the person I am now, SIS is not just a school, it is friendship, unity, community, kindness, youth, optimism and understanding.

Future plans: My general plan is to travel to as many countries in the world as I can, aiming for 100 before I turn 30, and then continue. In the short term, I am starting the summer by travelling to Thailand and Vietnam for 6 weeks and then to Japan and other surrounding countries for the other part of the summer. Meanwhile I am deciding on whether to take a gap year and keep travelling and learning, or start university in September. My initial plan was to get a good degree in university and only have it as a back up so that I can do whatever I want instead. I am not sure of what my future will look like but I know that I will make it full of cool adventures and collect awesome memories to share if I ever get old. The main goal is to be happy.

Having been at Sotogrande International School since I was three years old, it would be impossible to sum up my time here in only one page. This school and the surrounding community has played a fundamental part in who I am today and I am forever grateful for that. I will always remember and treasure the teachers that have assisted me, along with the incredible friendships I have formed over the years. Leading up to the IB my time in SIS has flown by as one spectacular blur. During diploma one of my most fondest memories was the D1 trip to Asni which was a breath-taking adventure to the Tiwizi Association that brought the year group together, in addition to exposing us to the diverse culture of Morocco. Furthermore, participating in the production of ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ staged by our Theatre class was a highly challenging experience that demonstrated the difficulty and stress Mrs Barling faces when directing the school performances. Following all the countless after school rehearsals the production came together to be one we are all truly proud of. We will definitely be reciting those lines for years to come! The History trip to London was a significant highlight to my time in diploma as we followed Mr Mungles around the city requesting to be allowed to call him Jason. I will also never forget my remarkable year in Higher Level Maths filled with an extremely multicultural class learning new bits of Russian daily. The experience was a fusion of laughter and tears that taught me the ability to persevere. All in all the list is endless. Thank you SIS for giving me such wonderful memories that it is so difficult to pick between them. Future plans: Following an incredible long summer I plan to go to university in the UK to study law. Whereabouts in 191 England I haven’t quite decided… Afterwards I intend to take a year studying abroad continuing my degree in SIS Yearbook • 2017 sunny Australia where in the meantime I can visit my family whom I am longing to see.

Being in SIS since I was three has given me the opportunity to meet extraordinary people. I have too many good memories... the whole process of building and creating ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ with my crazy drama family was a blast. I feel blessed after growing up in such an amazing environment. The thing I will miss the most is the relationship with the teachers; it is not easy to find teachers that will push you, make you stronger, independent and be there for you when you need them. This school makes sure you find your passion and that you exploit it to the core. Thank you SIS. Future plans: Quitting law and escaping uni to become the President of the United States....in the movies of course.... #SorryTrumpIPlayYourRoleBetterThanYouDo

SIS was my introduction into the international atmosphere of an IB school. It’s been an amazing time here, spending time and making friends with people of all calibres. One of my best memories of SIS was the D1 Asni trip, where we all travelled to a small village in Morocco. There, we had an amazing time experiencing the culture and land of Morocco, while also bonding with the locals. It is an experience like this which highlights just one of the many great times I’ve had at SIS. It’s kind of daunting to believe a great chapter in my book is about to end, with the next just around the corner. Future plans: After graduating, I’m planning on having a few months break before starting uni in 2018. My sights are set toward my home country Australia, where I plan on studying civil engineering in Sydney. I already have many past friends and family there, and hope to further my education while also having a blast at uni.

Being at this school since P1 has given me the greatest opportunity of making life long friends. Although I can’t recall all of my fondest memories, I will never forget this school and the people who have helped me to grow into the person I am today. I have seen friends grow up, from the age of 5 to the age of 18, to become the most amazing individuals I know. Throughout my many years at this school, I have been taught the most important life lessons by teachers, friends and family that I will carry with me through my next adventure. Miss Maes always telling us we can’t smile because it’s Monday. Playing a game of «Where’s Alex», for a year because we could never find him throughout the school day. Having my mother as a teacher gave me the opportunity to spend more time with her before I go to University. Future plans: Travel to the Caribbean, China and Vanuatu. Attend King’s College London and study Medicine (dream career) by doing the BioMedical Sciences course first.

My name is Saskia Norum and I have studied at SIS for 9 years. Attending SIS has been an incredible experience full of challenges and opportunities. I have learnt many new skills and techniques being a part of the SIS environment. I have had so many good memories since year five that it is almost impossible to remember all of them. But some of the most memorable aspects of my time at SIS are the trips each year. One of my first memories at SIS was the Year 5 trip to Huelva to visit Christopher Columbus’s ships. I participated in many sporting events and I was involved in many different school sport competitions, I have many memories of winning athletic relay tournaments with the team. This was an incredible experience and I feel gifted to have been a part of this. Another incredible memory was the Football Trip to Italy in M2 coming third place in the girls’ team. One of my fondest memories was the trip to El Chorro in M2, the water fight was the highlight of the trip. Another incredible experience was the trip to Asni, Morocco to support the school and the community. One day I would like to return to the people in Asni. I have had many more unforgettable memories at SIS… During my experience at SIS I have met many new people with different characters and made great friends that I am sure I will stay in contact with for the rest of my life. I am grateful for all the guidance and help the teachers have provided for me over the last nine years. I feel privileged to have attended SIS and been a part of the family for so many years. After all of these years at SIS it is sad to be leaving but it is time for me to become an individual in the world and make a difference. Future plans: My future plans are to have an incredible summer and then go to University and study Graphic Communication and become involved in the creative industry and carry on horse riding and competing.

Hi my name is Alexia Pouroulis. I have devoted 6 years of my life at this incredible school, which has been an extremely life changing and memorable journey. I have probably made the best friendships along with various sporting achievements throughout my high school career. I have learnt valuable lessons throughout my time here, however the most valuable lesson I learnt in sporting events and at school, was from Mr Stone, which is to never give up and keep trying until you succeed. Beyond giving me an education, this school has given me a clear pathway towards who I want to be for the future and where exactly I want to go. There have been so many memories highlighting my time here, however school trips have always been incredible with the most enjoyable experiences . From hanging out of our room windows to talk to the boys in my first M2 trip to Granada, to the ski trip in 2013 when the song “Get Hyper” was played non-stop all the way up to Sierra Nevada. From travelling by boat and train to visit the association in Asni, Morocco, to flying to Italy for a football tournament. I have gathered many fantastic memories throughout my time here, and I would like to thank everyone for making these 6 years unforgettable. Future plans: As I venture off to university I plan to embrace the whole experience of living away form home, meeting new people and studying sports psychology. Ultimately I wish to qualify as a sports psychologist, working for big companies coupled with my passion of equine therapy.

I am originally from Russia and have been studying in SIS for 3 years. My classmates and I have gone through a lot of things during this 3 years. As a whole journey it was very challenging but it gave us a lot of pleasant moments. Events like SotoRox gave me an opportunity to overcome my fear of stage and understand what it feels like to be in front of so many people. The school trip to Asni, Morocco was one of the best things that happened to me for the past 3 years. I would never imagine to see how people live outside of developed countries. Despite the understanding of diversity of our world I was able to see the beauty that is hiding in places that people would never imagine to go for a vacation. I am glad that I have enough opportunities and desire to explore the world outside my comfort zone. The amount of great people that I met here is just incredible. Every person in my class has dreams, interesting thoughts, background and an astonishing future that they are building with a lot of effort and passion. I am lucky to be a part of this community. Future plans I am going to the Netherlands to study automotive engineering. I want to do my masters in the Netherlands as well if I like the country. If not, I would like to continue my studies in another country. I hope that the tough Dutch weather conditions will not stop me from practising kiteboarding and that the intense course program will not stop me from playing music. I will try my best to develop my skills in those areas, follow my passions and always remember about my friends and family.

My fondest memories are my amazing fantabolous drama class and our crazy yet incredible lessons. This ranges from Mrs Barling´s many attempts at filming our work but actually just filming her chest...to the toy gun fights across the classroom, and going on the drama trip and sneaking out every night after curfew (sorry Mrs B). I have also loved the memories made in Geography class with Mr Barling. I honestly don’t know how he dealt with us all year but he managed to always find a way to make the topic a little more fun. Like spontaneously organising a circuit course around the school and his lovely cartoon drawing on the board, The maaannnyyyy plays and performances I have been in throughout my time here have been some of my most loved memories. From Seussical the Musical in M2 to The Play that Goes Wrong in D1, I have developed and grown as a performer. Those experiences coupled with Mrs Barling’s persistent belief have allowed me to realise what I want to do with my life. Future plans: My future plans are to study Liberal Arts in one of my top University choices in England. However beyond that I would love to pursue a career in acting or some form of performing arts!

“ He’s young, so yeah” “AAAAAAMARILLO!” “¿Que es esto? ¡Este es queso!” “DON’T FUZE THE HOSTAGE!!” “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub” Geo

Hi there, Keegs here. I am South African and I started at SIS in M3. For me it was an amazing opportunity to immigrate to Spain, as the cultures and educational system are distinctly different and it gave me a whole new view on life. Even though I have been living in Spain for the past 5 years, I am still getting used to the idea of not having to worry about crime so much as compared to when I was living in SA. (Even though my mom still wants me to lock the doors when it gets dark out.) My fondest memories from SIS are: - On the M5 bonding trip, we had lots of fun. One moment in particular was when it came to bedtime. For sleeping quarters we had to supply our own tents. Unfortunately, I left my big tent in SA (We do lots more camping over there) and my only option was to take my medium sized tent. Some of my buddies didn’t want to sleep outside in the fresh air and asked me if they could share my tent with me. Now just imagine, 3 hyperactive boys trying to squeeze into one small sized tent. It was hilarious. My one friend, I think he suffered from claustrophobia, but he didn’t admit it, made use of his self-defense mechanism by jabbing at us with his fists. As boys are, we started punching and rolling each other and broke out with laughter. Please do not ask me how we did not wake up the whole camp! - Every year the school presents drama performances. I gained so much experience and I’ve proven myself so much that I am not even required to audition, because I am the school’s best lighting/tech person for theatre performances. I have been doing this job for the past 3 years, so I have A LOT of experience. Some of my favourite and most amazing performances that I have been doing the technical side for was Red shoes and Moulin Rouge. I miss practising for these, as during the run-up to the shows, is where I made the most friends, and experienced the most stress, which is nicer that the actual live show. - In the summer of 2016, the school had their first trip to Ecuador, the land of no wifi and millions of mosquitos. The trip was an amazingly unforgettable trip, especially because I travelled there with friends. Whilst I was there, the community we interacted with was so kind and they made me open my eyes as to how these kinds of communities can still live in a place like the Amazon rainforest and not be affected by any of today’s issues. - Sound effects provided by Mr Lee and Doc Woolley when there is something on the board that is wrong. Future Plans: My immediate plan directly after exams is to have a relaxing summer holiday in Spain as I have not had one yet, because all the time I have gone back to freezing South Africa to visit my family and old friends. I am also planning on making more videos for my youtube channel and to stream more (/c/crinegang). My plans for uni is to hopefully go to the Netherlands for an economics degree for about 3 years. My other option is to take an economics degree in Spain, which is really close to home (I still need somebody to do my washing). I am also planning on making best friends with the people I meet in uni, and that we will hang out a lot. My longer term plans are to be successful, retire at a young age and enjoy life.

“I got 99 problems and school is every one of them” - Me

During the VERY long PAINFUL hike in Morocco, I was told doing certificate I do not actually have to do CAS, MY GOD. I particular enjoyed dropping my glasses down a hill and me accidentally going straight down with them (thanks to Jake for saving my life). Walking on stage at M5 graduation barefoot, and having the whole south of Spain stare. I particularly enjoyed doing the Mathematics IA which took over an excruciating year M5 graduation when James spilled a bottle of water on my dress Future plans I will be joining Bet365 which is a gambling company in Gibraltar this September and begin to work there. (then in a year´s time be the CEO and be rolling in it)

I came to SIS three years ago and prior to that attended about five different schools in several different countries. I can honestly say that SIS was the best high school experience I could have ever had. I don’t live with my parents and some of the teachers here have up taken a similar role (to an extent, of course). My fondest memories from SIS are definitely the Ecuador and Asni trips and all the many musical events that my friends and I always participated in. The rest (and best) memories are either inappropriate and/or confidential. Future plans I am going to the US to study media and communications. Then I’ll find a rich man, have four kids and settle down before divorcing him and stealing all his money. Just kidding!

My name is Vittoria, I am Italian and I have mixed feelings regarding the fact that this chapter of my life is already over. I have to admit, I was looking forwards for this moment of knowing that the IB Diploma is almost finished FOREVER and hearing everyday Ms. Maes doing the count down just made me more and more excited for my future, but I still remember perfectly the first day I came to this school around two years ago... and I also have to admit that I am sure I will miss this place. Having changed three high schools gave me the confidence to say that it has never been so easy to feel at home in a new place as in this school: the pure souls and caringness of people, the harmony felt in school, the endless laughs made with each classmate, and the friendly environment of Spain has allowed this feeling to be felt by everyone that comes to Sotogrande. From the very first day I have made great experiences in school, such as going to Morocco or speaking in a conference in Switzerland, and met precious people with whom I have made one of my best memories. This school has the great ability of transferring to students the desire for learning, being committed, and being enthusiastic everyday for every situation we encounter.

Future plans: After staying in Kenya and traveling around Europe, I would love to study in Spain (Madrid) either Business Administration or International Relations or Economics in Holland. In both cases, I hope to enrich myself with the knowledge necessary to contribute positively in improving social and development problems.

I survived two years of IB!! My fondest memories at SIS would have to be lunch with all the girls - Chloe, Caroline, Yolanda, Maria, Zoe, Vicky - and sneaking into the teacher’s area to be able to eat in peace and gossip without being knocked by a tray every time someone wanted to get past. Laughing hysterically with Chloe Lawrence when we were boarders and making Joseph Coventry feel paranoid at his first dinner because we literally couldn’t stop laughing. Being part of Mr.Wicks’ advisory and having snack Wednesday where each week one of us would have to bring in snacks for everyone and we’d all actually be there on time! Boarding memories are my favourite…. From the first day in boarding to the last it was a rollercoaster of feelings, from being really excited to go to Carrefour on the Thursday to just get out of school and off school campus to walking down every shopping aisle with Chloe and Alex and never buying anything! Or when the school food was that bad Mr Lawrence and Mrs Lawrence ordered an Indian for all of us to eat and trying to convince them that the food was bad all the time after that. Our Christmas dinners were the best…All of us piling into the mini bus to go to the wok in La linea and having competitions on who could eat the most plates between Joseph and I…. I won… and having to say no to the shots offered after we’d finished. After returning to SIS after a year out it was very weird to settle back down but everybody was welcoming. Another fond memory would have to be the trip to Asni in 2016; the 12-hour train ride with no sleep and the train ride back where no one could stay awake!! The bus rides home everyday are something to remember…. all the deep conversation and laughs we’ve had after a long day at school and arguing with Veronica about who gets to sit in “my” seat, and taking the mickey out of Sam. Business class is something I will never forget, Jack Wilkes just wondering around the lesson aimlessly and Miss Pinnock finally giving up trying to keep him seated after a year an a half. I would like to thank my mum and my dad for putting up with me over the last two years with all the stress of IAs, Extended Essay and TOK! And I would like to give a special thanks to Miss Maes for helping me with EVERYTHING, and making sure that I didn’t stress out too much when something didn’t go right the first time, and helping me through all my exams. Future plans My future plans are to attend Bath Spa University and study business and management. As for after exams, I think catching up on two years lost sleep and actually going out and getting some sun on my face will be nice.

“There’s always time to repeat a year, but you can’t surf the same wave twice, if you know what I mean!” “Just look in my eyes and you will see Russian paradise.” “Can I please not take my cap off?”

I came here from Russia in order to be closer to the beach so that I can do kitesurfing more often - and now, ironically, I have stopped doing kitesurfing altogether… Studying has taken up so much of my life that I am now eagerly awaiting to finish exams and get back in the water as soon as I can. Sometimes IB makes you feel like you have lost a piece of your personality, but Mrs. Maes has reassured me along the way that I am not just another student - I am Demikpro. My fondest memories from SIS are all linked with going out with my friends. For example, riding the skatepark in San Roque and the D1 trip to Tarifa. It is at times like this I can interact socially with my classmates and get to know people much better. Future plans: Forget about IB and surf the whole summer, no matter where and with whom.

I was born into a multi-cultural family, which includes Germans, Estonians, Russians and Ukrainians, I speak 4 different languages. While I am Estonian by birth, I consider myself a Russian. I came to SIS in 2015 for the IB, which led me to discover new parts of the world and discover new parts of myself. Working alongside an NGO in the Kindred Project allowed me to visit extraordinary places that I never thought I would go. The summer excursion to Ecuador taught me how to connect with nature by living with a native tribe. Traveling across Morocco I discovered a whole new world right by my doorstep. These are but a few memories that I will carry for the rest of my life. Making new friends in a new home was a big challenge for me. But these friends, these relationships will stand strong in the storm of time. Spending my well earned study periods ( frees) in the common room has allowed me to focus on enjoying the little things that like has to offer. Future plans: My goal in the future is to write my own book about my life which includes traveling because an exotic caption in my book won’t harm anyone. As for my career I want to open my own makeup school where I will teach different makeup styles such as theatre makeup, 3D makeup, etc. 207 And also not to forget, I want to own a family of pugs and call one baby boy Benji. I was born in Guernsey and moved to Spain in the year 2000, I am the 4th member of my family to graduate from this school. I have attended S.I.S. since nursery and have so many fond memories of my time here surrounded by caring and supportive staff who have enabled me to discover my own life path and allowed me to experience so much of the world. Working with the Kindred Project has given me the chance to travel to South America and live with a native tribe and adventuring deep into the heartlands of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to work with a long running organization that has housed my sisters before me. I have also had the opportunity to travel around Europe with my multiple Model United Nations meetings in Germany and I.S.T.A. conferences in London. One of the toughest experiences was running the Student Council as the President, learning how to lead and organise group of students towards our common goals. I will never forget the plays I have performed for the school over the years starting as `Pumba´ in the Lion King and stretching out into Moulin Rouge. Meeting Sam at the age of 3 (breaking his nose on the same day!) and being friends ever since has brought me to various fond memories. The pressures of IB were lifted by spending everyday with the crew playing Beggar my neighbour and Wilkes saying “I don’t make up the rules” when he managed to play every round regardless of whether he won or not. Some of my greatest memories come from early morning Advisory and listening to James’s strange weekend adventures with his chickens, along with Katie’s daily complaint “I’m so tired!”; as well as James and I mocking Mr. Maloney for Aston Villa’s poor performance every morning. I will never forget those days our theatre group spent gossiping instead of actually learning our plays that we were performing and Mrs. Barling constantly asking “Where´s Veronica!?” Future plans I will attend the University of IE in Segovia for 2 years, after that I aim to move to their Madrid campus to continue my education for a further 2 years. I will study Politics, Law and Economics during the four years. I hope to also preserve my love of acting and return to SIS to help Mrs. Barling with future performances.

I moved to Spain and enrolled in SIS three years ago. Since day one in the new place, I have never regretted my decision. This school gave me the best multicultural experience, which I wouldn’t have if I stayed in Russia. (I am Russian by the way; if you find spelling mistakes, you know why :D) I love SIS with all my heart, even with IB pressure, drama, trust issues and gossips. The school, teachers, boarding house and friends make my life much better despite all the bad days. The SIS community has made me stronger, not only as a student but as a person, and I won’t forget about it. I will miss Soto; I will miss everything and everyone. SIS became my second family, and it is hard to leave... One of the fondest memories that stayed in my head is my first day at this school. Mr Kearney was giving a speech, and at some point, he called two students from each grade and gave them doughnuts. He asked them to bite into them until they reached the jam. He compared doughnuts with education and the effort that we have to put in our studying. He metaphorically showed us that to reach something desirable in life we have to work. This speech impressed me because it was so different from my previous school, everything was new for me. Also, it will stay in my head because it was only one part of the speech that I understood the most. Future plans: I am going to study the hospitality course in the Australian university ICMS... a bit far away, but it is Sydney! In Russia, we have an old proverb: “Who doesn’t risk never gets to drink champagne.” Therefore, why not to move to another continent? It may be so much fun. *cross fingers* But anyways, who knows what the future holds, it has so many surprises on our life paths; hopefully, I will become a successful businesswoman, running my own hotel and will have a great family <3 For my short-term plans: I am going to rest for the whole summer and finally read all books that I wanted to read before IB started and maybe pass my driving exams.

I arrived at the school at the beginning of P5, having moved from the UK. I was scared d at first, fi as it was the h fi first big move that I had taken, but I soon settled and made many great friends, who I’m sure I’ll keep for a long time. I have many great memories at this school, but in particular the many trips we took as a year group that brought us together stood out to me. The teachers put on so many incredible experiences for us to enjoy that I could never put them all on paper. The standout ones for me were all three El Canuelo trips, where we learned to write music. This cultivated a love of music that will never leave me. I have also loved every moment of my school time that I spent with a football shirt on. Winning tournaments in Italy, Portugal and local ones in Spain surrounded by fellow students strengthened my other passion, my passion for sport. I would like to thank Mr. Gibson, Mr. Stone, Ash and in particular Kevin Dennis for being incredible mentors in the world of sport, and helping me to fulfil my potential on the pitch. I would also like to thank Matt for organising so many incredible ski trips. Many great memories were made in the hostel. Academically, I wouldn’t say that I quite put the same amount of effort into homework as I put into Music and Sport, but later in my school career I feel I have found a trend and a work ethic that I can use throughout my life. I have all my Diploma teachers to thank for this, and I will always be grateful with the help you gave me during my Diploma course. Future plans: Study International Business in Scotland somewhere (Cold lover, bit weird that I live here), travel and work a ski season in Canada. I may have to get a job at some point, but I’m happy to see where I end up and I’m sure my life will work itself out at some point in the near future.

Hello, my name is Anastasia. I started in M5 when I came from Russia. So, I left my family far away, but I didn’t miss them a lot. My English level was awful, however, I managed to go to D2, ta dah!!! My first impression of the school was very positive, as they helped me to develop some skills and shaped the way I am now. I had the privilege of choosing my favourite subjects and I also had amazing trips with my class and teachers which allowed us to get to know us better and being closer. Above all the subjects, Art is definitely my area of interest because now I can express myself in an artistic way. I am thankful for having been in this school, especially I thank all my teachers who taught me and helped me in my development. Future plans My plans in the short term are to apply to some universities in Europe where I can study architecture; to live independently and become an expert in my field. In the long term I would like to be a famous architect and have my own company and definitely, have a family. I would also travel around the world and learn more about other cultures.

I moved to SIS in M4 because I wanted to take part in the incredible music and drama departments that interested me so much. I fell in love with the school automatically, and I’ve experienced some memories that I will cherish forever. One of my fondest memories at SIS would have to be the Moulin Rouge production in 2015. It was such an enjoyable experience and I made some new friendships along the way. Another experience that stands out is the London ISTA trip in October 2015. Those 5 days of meeting new people, learning about the performing arts, and exploring London- were so much fun. Getting a 10/10 in my TOK presentation was definitely a moment of accomplishment that stands out, especially since my group had to retake it. My time at this school has helped shape the person I am today. I am forever grateful for the help I’ve received from my teachers, not just with school work, but with useful advice and life lessons. I will always remember the people I met at this school, and all the fun laughs we’ve shared together. Of course, there have been tough times; I can’t say that staying up till 4am with several cups of coffee to finish my IA’s was an enjoyable time period. I’d also love to say that school has helped me improve my time management skills, but I don’t like to lie. Finding SIS, and deciding to leave my previous school to attend this one was possibly one of the greatest decisions of my life. Through it all I’ve got to participate in countless shows, attend some amazing school trips, and make some unforgettable memories. Thank you. Future plans: This summer I’m going to New York with my boyfriend - as an 18th birthday present from my mum. After an incredible summer, I plan on following my dreams and becoming a successful singer and actress. Maybe I’ll attend a performing arts school, maybe I’ll take a gap year, maybe I’ll live in London or LA or NYC, maybe I’ll change my mind and find another route to take. Wherever life takes me, I know it’s going to be an adventure. I also plan on having a family some day; after I’ve travelled the world of course. I’m looking forward to learning as much as possible about the world and myself through my incredible experiences. One thing that I will always try to do though (as cliché as it may sound) is to live in the moment, and have a positive attitude.

Mario Reithaar Because we were not in school during the D2 London History Trip. I decided to call Mr.Mungles by his first name ‘Jason’, ‘Jay’ whilst we were in London.

I came to SIS in Reception and have attended the school since. Growing up in SIS created unforgettable memories such as little things like Garden Parties in Reception to trips to London in D2. One of the best memories was when we played the Mediterranean Cup in Italy for Football in M3 as we interconnected with other schools and overall a really good trip. Future plans: Because I will not be attending University, due to other business acquisitions. I will be taking a sort of GAP year in London. I also have in mind to become a Sports Agent and get my license during this GAP year, this being because football is multi billion dollar business and sports agent. Remember the name, Mario Reithaar.

I am a Moroccan Dutch young lady living in Sotogrande. I joined Sotogrande in September 2015 and I would not have wanted it any differently. I made lifelong friends, learned so many new things and felt so accepted immediately. Sotogrande has just been one small part of my journey. I was born in Holland and raised in Morocco, Belgium, Holland and Spain. I’ll definitely never forget all the amazing support I have had from my teachers in school, all the cheer ups after my break downs and every single lesson. The Economics class conversations and arguments, the Business laughs, the ESS «free periods», the Maths Kahoot lessons, the Dutch «frees» and the MOST AMAZING English lessons! I want to thank Ms. Maes so much for being there for me when I needed her and of course for all her long nights having to check my Extended Essay. As well as Mr. Mungles and Mr. Green for all their support in TOK. I started off with no passion for TOK and gradually due to my teachers I have developed a better understanding for TOK and started to enjoy the classes way more which resulted in one of my best highlights this school year so far, my 10/10 for my TOK final presentation. Future plans Packing all my gypsy pants and bandanas and travelling to 10 different destinations this summer. And yeah. Just chill on the beach with a mojito. In September, you’ll be able to find me in my penthouse in central London studying International Relations at Regent’s University. Then work in the United Nations, become the most powerful women in Africa somehow and travel around the world in my private jet.

I have been part of the SIS community since I first joined in M1. Although the frightened htened 10-year-old ld me fe fear feared ared ed tthe he llon long ongg journey jour jo urne neyy I was about tto face, I could not be any more content with the final conclusion to this period of my life. Perhaps, the most astonishing aspect of the school is all the diverse nationalities that intertwine to form our humble little community. How we come together is certainly shown through the heartwarming trip to Asni I shared with my peers - an experience that will stay with me for a very long time. Our history trip to London was filled with highlights, from Maria constantly forgetting her bag basically in any possible place to Mario constantly referring to Mr. Mungles as “Jasooon!!”. Overall, these few chaotic years have come to an end and I can definitely say that the resulting friendships will always be so special to me. Without our support for one another, IB would have been twice as challenging. And although many sleepless nights were endured, as a class, we have finally reached the finish line. To every single teacher, whom I have met throughout the way; I would not be here without your help. Your efforts will not fade away, thank you. Diploma has contributed to moulding me into the person that I am today. But, I hope that I will never ever be asked again “how do we know what we know?” because I still don’t even know what I know. I eagerly await what the future has in store and I wish every single one of my classmates success in whatever they decide to tackle next! Future plans: Fingers crossed, I hope to successfully finish exams and finally enjoy a summer free of work. I then plan to continue education in the UK studying English Literature - something I love. Perhaps I’ll go on to doing a masters in a more focused area, perhaps not. Although I am still very unsure of the future, I am eager to face it head on and see where it takes me. What I truly hope for, is to be privileged enough to travel and experience the different cultures of our world. But life is unpredictable and whichever circumstances I am faced with, I will try my very best to overcome.

SIS has been a challenging yet remarkable experience and the fact that I’m here writing my yearbook paragraph is beyond belief as these two years have passed by extremely quickly. I am also more than confident that I have made friends with whom I will continue making endless memories for the rest of my life. However, when they say that the IB is challenging believe me, it is. Instead of sneaking out of your house when you’re supposed to be sleeping, you sneak around your house to print homework out. Forming part of the SIS community since 2004 has definitely allowed me to make infinite amounts of unforgettable memories. These include Miss Maes’ and my constant bonding over our love for chocolate and the way that the sign on her table “Chocolate doesn’t ask questions, chocolate understands” was always an excuse for me to eat more chocolate. Another memory includes me claiming and trying to convince her that “preparing popcorn” was a highly challenging job, in order for it to be approved as a CAS experience, as well as Mr Gibson’s and my bantering about Angelina joining the school’s running club. Oh, and let’s not forget the dreaded Common Room stairs that most of the time ended up being the only form of exercise you did. As a whole, I am thankful for every opportunity SIS has given me and despite it being EXTREMELY TIRING, I believe that hard work pays off Future plans My future plans include travelling to Croatia with my friends and adventuring as much as I can. I am also planning on 219 studying Media & Communications at Newcastle University in England and perhaps do my Masters SIS Yearbook • 2017 somewhere like Australia or Canada and open up my own business in the future.

My name is Henry... but I have many names. I am from Ireland but I have been in Sotogrande school for most of my life, so leaving this place will be a bit like leaving a home. I have a lot of great memories from SIS, most of them I am not allowed to talk about in the yearbook and oddly enough many of the extreme stories were with teachers not students. The staff are definitely what make the school and I am very grateful to them. The work was hard but they made it fun and often I think of teachers more like friends. My best memories from the school are probably the trips to Asni and to Ecuador. I had fun going places and actually doing things for people. I had some really awesome experiences and I am proud that the people I have become friends with are from all around the world.

Future plans: For a while, I have made a point about not thinking too much about the future... and I still haven’t. My immediate plan is to go and study design in the Netherlands. Other than that the world’s pretty much an open place so we’ll see.

Grace Marie Colley

“I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” Robert Frost

I’m Grace Colley and I’ve been going to SIS since September 2016. Although my time here has been quite short, it has been nothing less than amazing. Two of the best moments of the year for me have been spending time with Moroccan children in Asni with some of my fellow peers and organizing the school Prom to help benefit those children. In just less than a year I have countless of unforgettable memories at this school and I just wish I had time to make more but I’m excited to see what the future has in store!

Future plans In late August I will begin university at Davidson College in North Carolina, United States. I hope to major in English literature or statistics and swim on the Division 1 team there.
