Welcome to yearbook 2016
W
ow, what an amazing year we have had! When I stop to relect, it really astounds me what we have managed to achieve in such a short time. I am blessed to work with a remarkable team of teachers, support staf, students and parents. It is the combination of all of these stakeholders that enables us to create such a busy, active and successful community.
Central to our mission is to develop efective people, efective learners and empathetic global citizens, who are IT literate and able to choose what, where and how they study. I want to relect on how much we have achieved in these areas, as I am sure you will too as you look through the photos. The efective person focus has really grown in the primary homeroom time, the secondary pastoral time and through our new psychology team. We have been working with students to really understand who they are, what their strengths are and how to use these to the best of their ability. Staf have begun a learning journey in mindfulness and it is lovely that we have a small group of students who are attending mindfulness sessions. The bonding trips this year really helped our students to see each other’s strengths as well as uncover new found personal strengths. Our sportsmen and women this year have really learnt a great deal about their own skillsets. With our football players from P6 winning the Mediterranean Cup Under 11 tournament in Verona, our Under 18 players winning in Portugal and most recently our girls and boys Under 14 teams making the semi inals and the boys team going on to win. Our student body is full of talented kite surfers, skiers, snowboarders, golfers, fencers, horse riders and tennis players, who have all made wonderful individual strides forward and gained great successes. These are experiences that really allow students to look inside of themselves, come face to face with diicult situations, ind and apply coping strategies and manage emotions. The efective learner driver has allowed our teachers to come together and think about what great learning really is about. From research we have drawn on some amazing academic work and trialed diferent ideas from around the world. What we have created are some amazing strategies for our students to use that enable them to make headway in their learning. As I walk around the school I see the same strategies of assessment for learning, cooperative learning or problem solving being used across the school. This helps the journey for our children to be consistent and efective. I was so impressed to witness our P6 students in the P6 Exhibition, M3 students in the Community Project, our M5 students in the Personal Project and D1 in the Group 4 Project actively applying these strategies when faced with group tasks and problems to solve. Having the conidence to try and solve problems that we do not know the answer to is an incredible skill, and one that we will keep developing as it is essential for life.

Our drive to create empathetic global citizens echoes through our school and permeates many of the photos that you see here. Such powerful student emotion was released after the Paris attacks, where students took action, asking for lowers to be laid at our memorial tree, and creating visual memorials on the Timber music building. In addition our students have taken action through the refugee crisis and this was blended with our arts programme and curriculum through the whole school and displayed at the Red Red Shoes performance. The numerous service-learning opportunities that we ofer, allow our students to develop great emotional empathy and a deep-set moral compass that has a lasting efect on them. The unit trips that primary students have had to Hogar Betania, helping prepare gardens or interviewing residents, who are migrants, not only make learning real, but also help our students to give back to our community. The CAS trip to Asni this year has had a lasting efect on the D1 students and will be a memory that stays with them. One student was so afected by the experience, she held an art exhibition in Russia and raised over 5000€ for the Asni project. I am feeling excited about the launch of our new trip to Ecuador and developing relationships with worthy projects there. The IT driver this year has really blossomed. The M2 students who stay into M3 for the whole year will get to keep their MacBook air, likewise our P4 students who stay into P5 for the whole year will keep their iPads, for a small fee. This driver will allow us to become a single platform school over time. The feedback from the visitors at the Lighthouse days, the integration of professional IT courses (such as inal cut pro) in the curriculum and the students’ enthusiasm to apply IT to enhance their learning is bringing great energy to our curriculum throughout our school. This was most recently noted by Apple Europe as they came to visit our school in May. Finally this year saw the start of our lexible learning driver. Giving some choice of subjects where possible is having a wonderful efect on students’ energy and motivation. The M4 and M5 students for the irst time were allowed to study both Art and Music. We saw the power of this at Rock the CASBAH, which was a phenomenal event. The ability to study 3 languages, or extra Science is now a possibility. It enables our students to further ind their passion and their authentic voice. This driver will grow as we venture into new pastures with our International A’ Level and American High School Diploma programme. It really has been a remarkable year, one that makes me feel deeply proud. With the exciting news of the new land linked with our amazing student body, next year looks even more promising and exciting!

hen relecting back on this academic year it is hard to put into words just how much our Primary school has achieved. It certainly has been a year full of challenges and new learning experiences, all of which have inspired and guided our learners along their way.
W
As we close the year I feel extremely proud of all our students and all that they have accomplished. It really has been a pleasure watching them grow both as individuals and as learners. I would also like to thank our dedicated Primary staf for their continued enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism. Their constant strive for excellence in providing teaching and learning experiences that enrich the lives of our students cannot go with acknowledgement. Realistically there are too many wonderful memories from this year to be able to relect on. However, some of the highlights of the year have to include the two fabulous Christmas productions by our students in Early Childhood, P1 and P2; the fantastic P3-P6 musical production of Aladdin; the successful Student Led Conferences; the P6 Exhibition; the Primary Student Council led Spring Fair Family Fun Day; the Primary swimming galas and Sports Days; the numerous musical concerts and of course the many fantastic experiential trips that our students take part in. During this year our curriculum programme has continued to develop and students have enjoyed using new

resources such as the 1:1 iPad programme and the 3D printer. Outdoor space has also improved; using the extra land and with support from the PTA and working alongside teachers and our maintenance team, our Little Einsteins students have truly created a wonderful and magical outdoor space where they can play, explore and learn. During this year we have welcomed over sixty new students to pur Primary School. Our reputation is growing and with this growth I am pleased to announce that we will be opening up new classes, new classrooms and welcoming new teachers and teaching assistants in September. I would like to inish this year by recognising and celebrating our P6 cohort of students. The end of P6 is a milestone which marks the culminating experiences of the students passing through Primary School. For twenty-six of our P6s their SIS journey started back in EC1 and EC2. Over the years it has been a pleasure seeing our current P6 students develop and progress. Along with all of the Primary Teachers, I would like to wish our P6 class of 2016 the best of luck in their MYP adventure. Wishing everyone a wonderful and relaxing summer and looking forward to seeing you in September!

Message from
the head of middle school
T
he rate and magnitude of progress and development that our school has achieved this year has been nothing short of spectacular. Since last September, we have seen a vast array of learning opportunities presented to our school community; more than ever before. The number of lexible pathway subject electives that our MYP students are able to choose from has increased to an all-time high. The ever-expanding extra curricular activity programme, experiential learning trips and a variety of social events have enabled our students to recognise their strengths, to follow and excel in areas where their passions lie. After attending, as well as presenting at numerous established international education conferences, our MYP teachers have shared innovative ideas and strategies with each other, and other schools. We have collaborated and worked together on staf assessment to highlight and celebrate strengths, as well as ofering targets, strategies and innovative ideas about how to improve teaching and learning. As a result, our students have beneitted greatly from the extensive professional development that their teachers have received. Students have continued to embrace opportunities for them to extend their experiential learning. Some of the these moments where students can thrive include: Whole year group bonding trips, the El CaĂąuelo Music trip, M5 Personal Project, M3 Community Project, M1 Invention Convention, PTA parties, Kindred Project fund raisers, numerous MYP experiential subject learning trips, MUN conferences, inter house triathlon, ISTA Theatre trip and SIS festival, Dia de Andalucia celebrations, Sierra Nevada ski trips, the university and careers conventions and Red Red Shoes Theatre Production. As you can see from this Yearbook, the list goes on and the examples are extensive and very impressive!

In addition to these annual favourites, personal highlights from 2015-2016 include the mind-blowing 10th Anniversary of Sotorox where so many students were able to enjoy performing in an authentic rock concert experience. The astonishing success of our Middle School Football teams must also be noted with our boys and girls teams winning local, regional and international tournaments. These events aforded talented individuals opportunities to excel and lourish in highly competitive and fun team arenas. In addition, the inaugural Polar Bear and La Concha Challenges pushed students and teachers to go beyond what they believed were their physical limits. It has been an absolute pleasure to witness the collaborative passion and dedication of fellow colleagues, students, parents and guardians in our quest to consistently challenge and improve all that we do. As the school year draws to a positive conclusion, I always feel a great sense of pride and pleasure at the fundamental role Sotogrande International School plays in helping our students to lourish and become independent, young adults. As always, we will be sad to bid “Farewell� to our leavers, but extremely happy in the knowledge that we have provided them with the essential tools and skills necessary to step into the the next chapter of their lives; a step towards their bright, successful futures. Message from the head of upper school
nce again I ind myself writing this yearbook page on the eve of the D2 Graduation. Celebration. When I relect on the past year and O all that has happened, I am truly awed by the joint commitment of students, teachersand parents, all working together to make the SIS experience the best it can possibly be. It is worth reinforcing that the SIS International Baccalaureate Programmes continue to provide the best possible preparation for our students as they enter higher education and life beyond. This academic year has seen a lot of changes and new initiatives in the diploma programme. We added computer science to our DP ofering and students sat for the irst examinations in May. We have had several curriculum reviews with changes to the syllabus and assessment in sciences, business and management, theatre and visual arts. Teachers have managed these curriculum changes, some of which have been signiicant, with supreme professionalism. IB coursework assessment has been rapidly moving to an e-coursework system where much of student assessment is now uploaded rather than mailed. DP arts teachers in particular deserve congratulations for managing these changes so well. Further developments have included a workshop on revision techniques led by David Thomas and teacher-led revision workshops leading up to the IB examinations, which have proved very successful. Students have beneitted from many curricular and extra-curricular trips including Model United Nations, Theatre ISTA trip, History London trip, the CAS bonding trip to Tarifa, CAS trip to Asni, the football tournament in Portugal and both science and geography ield trips. As always it has been a packed year.

Our Graduating Class of 2016 have completed their IB exams and I have been impressed by the D2 students’ approach in the inal run-up to this challenging episode in their lives. We eagerly anticipate another set of deserved results that will again allow our students to pursue their dreams and continue to follow their passion. In the next few months the Class of 2017 will embark on the inal phase of their time at SIS. They will be completing course work, a 4000 word research essay, all of their CAS commitments, mock and inal examinations and, not least, deciding their future paths and making applications to colleges and universities. Finally, in September, the diploma team will be welcoming the next cohort of students, arriving from M5 onto the DP programme. These students can look forward to lots of stimulating and interesting learning, a myriad of CAS opportunities including two fantastic experiential trips, curriculum trips and projects and also lots of homework! I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the dedication of the SIS teachers and advisors, who unstintingly give their time and expertise to ensure that our students have the best possible school experience and preparation for life beyond school. I wish everybody at SIS a fabulous holiday and look forward to another fantastic year in 2016-17.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: You would think that after 15 years at this school it would be easy to choose some of my favourite memories, turns out there are so many of them that it is hard to pick my favourite ones. Let´s start at the beginning. Who can forget those glorious days in Nursery where we were forced to have a nap and the most challenging task of the day was learning to write our name. Or the irst day in year 3 when we changed buildings and felt like we were suddenly much older than we were. That was the year me and Victor started playing basketball with our older brothers, those were the days where we had tournaments every few months and that was when our unbeaten streak started (still alive to this day 14-0, baby). Then we got to M1 and from then it is a bit of a blur, time has lown. But who can forget the endless break times spent on the pitch playing Bulldog and Wembley or how we thought MYP was diicult until we stepped into IB. Then we got to D1 which was kind of incredible at the time, our inal 2 years of school, we had lost a lot of people along the way but there were still a lot of us left who had spent our whole school life together. Although I can safely say that the IB is a very challenging programme and that there have been a lot of long nights working, I wouldn't change a single thing. There is something special about being an IB student at this school, it’s hard to explain but if you are or have been one you know what I’m talking about. I will never forget our Computer Science lessons with Stevie where we had a great laugh and at the same time learned a lot of course, or Dr. Kievit´s puns and comebacks at our stupid comments. Of course I have to mention the trips otherwise this wouldn’t be a yearbook page, my favourites were deinitely Morocco in M5 where we camped on the rooftop of a house in the middle of the Rif mountains and explored the streets of Chefchaouen. Dortmund in D1 was amazing where I was representing the great country of Lithuania in the Disarmament committee, it was on this trip where we got lost in the streets of Dusseldorf and delayed our whole journey by about an hour and a half. These were such very diferent trips but extremely fun and I learned a lot from both. In terms of future plans I want to go and study Computer Science Engineering and Business in Madrid next year. After that, who knows? My main goal is just to be happy and have a good time, after that time will tell.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I lived in Munich and moved to a boarding school when I was 11. I then went to England for 2 years and eventually came to Soto. One of my best memories was the 3 week long Uganda trip which I went on. The things we/I did there were so important and at the same time so much fun. I learned a lot about myself and what it means to help someone who really needs help. The many things we did there could never it on any list and as much as I missed Spain with all its technology and comfort, I would go back there any day, to see again the children's eyes blossom, with their amazing smiles. As for my future plans, I will take a gap year to enhance my view on certain things and get a taste of work experience in the coming summer. My irst choice for Uni is Environmental Science and Geography but I think I'm likely to change that - again!

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I moved to Spain when I was 4 from Denmark, joining Sotogrande International School in Nursery and since then I’ve had the whole experience up to D2. I still remember the very irst day of school, and it’s a very strange feeling almost being inished. Fondest memories: I have had so many great memories from my time at Sotogrande International School. I still remember the time I skipped from Year 2 to 3, almost like starting in a new school again, but since then couldn’t have had a better time with the friends I’ve had. School Trips are deinitely a highlight throughout my time at school, such as the multiple Ski Trips to Sierra Nevada, Challenge Week, the trip to Morocco in M5, as well as all the sports events, football tournaments and the regular trips to Gibraltar playing for Sotogrande U13’s. Building skyscrapers out of spaghetti and marshmallows in D2 Geography is deinitely one fond memory in class. Future Plans: It’s diicult to predict the future, but in simple terms the plan is to spend 4 years at University in the U.S, playing Golf and studying Business, followed by becoming a professional golfer, winning golf tournaments and becoming a billionaire. Easy!

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My name is Walid (clearly stated above but, whatever). I'm one of the few survivors of the IB Diploma programme. I studied English, Spanish and Maths like most, but decided to study not only Physics, but HL Physics. Not my best call. I've actually been in this school from 2004 to 2007. I made all kinds of friends that I later saw again after 5 years of absence. My dream as a kid was to be a pilot. Funny how things turn out. It's inally over. After a 2-year culmination of blood, sweat and tears, and having to go through Higher Level Physics (what was I thinking?), I now realize the true meaning of IB, that is "Irrational Boloney". No matter how hard you try, you can only get so close to that cheeky 7. If you do get a 7 in Science, you're clearly in ESS. Don't lie. Anyway, it's been fun. There were times where you'd think everything is falling apart, and there was simply no time to ix them. When you're in that kind of position, as advice from a successful IB student (allegedly), the best thing would be to drop what you're doing and have a mad night out with lads. That way, the next morning on your deadline, when the teacher sees that pile of "cow dung" you call an essay, you'll remember you had fun last night while in detention. The good thing about days like that, is that it's the kind of fun high school memories you can look back at after a few years and still have a giggle about. The best memory of that kind would be seeing one of my friends having somewhat of an "accident" while wearing a Power Ranger suit at a party on Halloween. Long story. Can't go into too much detail. Many people try to plan out their lives from the point where they graduate. The problem with that is you can never tell what's going to happen later on. My plans for the future are quite simple actually. I plan to become an engineer and later develop cool lying things such as a supersonic drone, capable of breaking the speed sound. If that later becomes a thing in the future, you heard it here irst. Later, with that money, invest in lucrative aerospace deals, developing my very own weapons and sell them to everyone and watch the ireworks from my very own New York penthouse while sipping on some iced tea. And if I ever get bored, maybe I'll build my own spaceship. Who knows...

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I'm Joe, I've been in this school since M3 and I have had many many good times here. There are so many fond and funny moments for me in this school. I'm just going to outline some of the funniest ones. All the trips, particularly the Asni trip. That time President Mamadou denied famine in Niger. When Joel never turned up again in school after 420. The Portugal trip in the summer of 2015 with the boys. Knockout sessions with the boys. Cards Against Humanity with the boys. Playing Agario with the boys. Basically anything with the boys. I also loved and enjoyed playing in every single musical production the school has put on and I can't thank Mr Wix enough for giving me these opportunities. Kindred Project after school was also one of my favourite things to do. POMO. And of course, Miss Stone greeting us every morning with a smile on her face. Meeting all the new people here has been amazing and I don't regret meeting anybody here. I have made so many good friends and some of my best ones while being here. A major part of my school life here has been the inspiring teachers who help to inspire me every single day. It'll be a shame, no longer seeing these teachers and students. Future plans I don't really have plans for the future, I'll just go with the low. I will probably end up studying Music Production somewhere in the UK or travelling around making music and living in a van or something.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My name is Alejandra. Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce that… Everybody calls me Ale. I’m almost 18 now, and I’m from Barcelona. I still remember my irst week at SIS, last year. The week that I was forced to accept that Sotogrande is not Spain. It’s sunny Britain. And the week I had to pretend that I understood Mr. McClean’s Scottish accent during our TOK lessons. I have uncountable memories from the past couple of years. The trip to Asni was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. The gratiication of knowing that you have contributed to make a change in the lives of people in an underdeveloped community is something that will stay with me forever. And it made me realize how privileged I am to be receiving a good education, as well as having an amazing group of friends, and a family that looks after me. But it’s been mainly the small details that have made my days at SIS. (maybe actually fun). Like feeling welcome by Mr. Kearney every day at the school gate. Or inally being attended by Ana and Rocío at break. Or being awarded with an extra chicken nugget during lunch. I can now say that these past two years have been the best years of my life. The IB diploma would have been the worst nightmare without my classmates, and my teachers. Without their support and the conidence they have all given me, I would now be pathetically asking myself what to do with my life. And this brings me to my last point. What do I want to do with my life? It took me a while to igure out what would be my ideal job. I wanted to do something creative, but at the same time inspirational. And I wanted to travel, and I wanted my work to reach every spot in the world. How could I possibly do this while still being active in the business world? Marketing and communications was what I came up with. This will allow me to reach a massive audience, and communicate a message. So after graduating from Lancaster University, I will get a job at a huge company like Coca-Cola. I will be in charge of creating the most inspirational adverts and posters. These will appear in every spot of the planet, and therefore will be seen by everybody. I will have so much money by then that I will spend my thirties travelling around the world and exploring the most remote places that I can possibly reach. A less realistic dream of mine is to run an NGO by the age of forty… But let’s not be THAT ambitious, shall we?

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My name is Danielle, I’m 18 years old. I’m Dutch but I moved to Spain when I was three years old and it is the best thing that ever happened to me. I was given a sunny childhood in the middle of nowhere, Casares; where playing in the mud and climbing trees was the thing.I have been switching schools during my whole life but I must say that the IB in Sotogrande has been so, so great. The most unforgettable moments I have experienced while being here have deinitely been the trip to Asni, including organizing Kiss the Casbah. The people there, their culture and their love inspired me so much that I am aiming on returning there as soon as I can. My passion for acting is something I found being in this school and I was given the chance to combine it with singing and dancing in last year’s “Moulin Rouge” school performance. The school trips I have been on, have all been a great laugh and all gave me the opportunity to bond with diferent people from the year. It feels like this school has given me the tools to discover lost pieces of who I am. But most importantly of all, this school has given me friends that have made me cry and have given me stomach aches from laughing so much. These people are the ones that have helped me survive this terrifying IB and I am so grateful to them. The plan I have for the future is to go to uni in Rotterdam, create my own theatre group and organize my own shows. Big agencies will then realize how good I am and will either give me a contract to be an actress in Broadway, or will beg for me to organize the Oscars and the Red Carpet parties. If my name doesn’t appear on TV and on social media through Broadway or the Oscars, then it will probably appear when I open my irst 5 star restaurant. Yep, my life will be pretty busy.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Being in SIS for 5 years, I’ve had quite a few memorable experiences. The school trips have been highlights. Both Uganda and Asni showed a complete opposite to Sotogrande and gave us diferent social and cultural experiences. Trips to Tarifa have been numerous in SIS, with the last one, the D1 Geography trip being the best. Playing in school shows like Sotorox with best mates like Dani, Joseph, Mark and Paul have been memorable and taught me my irst steps in stage presence, collaboration in music, and live performance. Most memories in class have come from Alvaro in Computer Science quoting grime artists from JDZMedia and Joel making jokes in every class. Also, shout out to Mark for being funny pretty much everywhere. I plan to study computer science next year at the University of Birmingham or Newcastle, and then pursue a career in software engineering, allowing me to create software based on music, memory techniques, meditation or anything else that has helped me in the past few years, in hope to beneit other people. Showing people that there is some really amazing stuf and more to the Internet than just arguments in the YouTube comment section and DailyMail is also an objective for me. As for musical plans, being in a successful band and creating music from as many diferent genres as possible to end the genre war, bring attention away from pop and house music and attempt to openup people’s music tastes would be nice. Otherwise, it would be cool to be the next Oliver Sykes of metal.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I’ve got far too many memories, both in and out of school from school performances to going on holiday with my friends. The Uganda Trip which I went on in 2014 has to be one of; if not the best and most experiential trip I have been on. Shout-out to all the other trips including Asni, the many M4 and M5 camping trips and especially the D1 Geography trip. All the school performances I have played in, since my irst in M4 playing “Free Bird” to my last big event playing at Sotorox this year. In terms of school life, my best memories have to be in the classroom in which Joel would always try to make an inside joke, at everything the teacher said. Cameron Curwen’s laughter. Messing around at the back of Spanish classes. Future plans Try and survive summer. Try and survive university in England. Go with the low from there on.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: The truth is there’s been too many good memories to write down, or even remember. I reckon I’m going to write at least something funny, so just keep reading. Or don’t, but you might miss out. Nevertheless, I have to say, some of the best memories are too explicit be written down. The best times lie in the many school trips and events. The Uganda expedition, like the Asni trip, was something to never forget, as were the many experiences that made them. Ranging from befriending and helping the people in the communities, to trekking jungles, exploring cultures and a few near death experiences (chicken, rafting, driving, banter). The many school concerts, like Sotorox, Kiss the Casbah, and the Boarding house show had their ups and downs; in which I started a song, then stopping and asked if I can start again, rocked harder than everyone else, and entirely reinvented the music industry (The XXX, BB). The many friendships made along the way with which I have shared some experience or other made the whole time unforgettably awesome. The banter in class. Chair wars. Work experience. Getting lost and calling the police. Cross country runs. The hail Mary’s. Cantina cardboard. De la Mancha bros. Breaking every bone in my body. The complicated handshakes. Classic sayings. Sotosol walk. P.E class. Music. Wakeboarding. Pranks. The plays. Recitals. Videos. The History trip. The nicknames. Knocking out friends and the hour trips into school, amongst many others. If you’re me from the future, and are struggling to understand this, just know you were living a pretty good life. I can’t predict what the future may hold for me. My plans are pretty ambiguous. Start a company, slowly but surely apply my knowledge of economics, TOK, and historical analysis to expand worldwide, and take over every inferior country. Begin my plan of attrition to overthrow the law, and become the president of the world. Retire with my eight wives, grow a beard, and get weird in the woods. If that doesn’t work out, go to university, and study Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I came to this school two years ago to start the International Baccalaureate. I didn't know anyone here and that was one of my biggest fears. I had been in the same school for ten years, so a change like this in my life was deinitely something that frightened me. I wasn't used to big changes. I've lived in the same house since I can remember, and I have always had the same friends and classmates. I had never thought about how an experience like this would afect me, but the truth is that coming here was one of the best decisions in my life. I stayed at the boarding the irst year of IB. We were almost sixty people living there, so it soon felt like a big family. I have great memories from that irst year, from the nights I stayed until late playing the piano, to the pool parties Ash DJ'ed. It was a great experience for me, and the time I stayed at the Boarding House will always be remembered. I soon started to make a lot of friends, and it felt like I had been part of this school my whole life. We have also lived some adventures during these two years. In my irst year, we went to Morocco to help the people in need, and that was something that really bonded our friendship. At the beginning of my second year, we won a football tournament in Portugal with our efort as a team and the help of our trainers Mr Ash, Mr Dennis and Mr Gibson. From that trip I will take my endless shots to the crossbar and our 'triangulations'. I have learnt something precious from every single one of my teachers and classmates. Every teacher had their own moment of glory: Ms Lourdes with her 'merluzas congeladas', Ms Maes with her record of 7's, Mr Barling with his humour and drawings, Mr Mclean with his hatred to the hot temperatures, Mrs Bannell with her love of Maths and last but not least Mr Kievit with his 'Bags, loor!’ I couldn't have asked for better teachers, and their love for their subjects has made us more enthusiastic about our study. As for my future plans, I have decided to study my career in the United States. I am still not sure about the place, but the experience will for sure be worth it.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My name is María, I am 18 years old and I have been a member of the SIS community for 16 years. The people who know me are aware that I’ve always been truly passionate for sports, I don’t ever remember missing any school sports competition. I’m constantly iddling with my hair and making braids, I’m very active and nervous even though some don’t believe this, as I seem to look calm most of the time. It’s probably because I’m tired and I want to sleep. I have a strong personality, which is mostly always accompanied by a smile. I can wholeheartedly say that my experience at SIS has been incredibly special and irreplaceable, as it has formed a large part of my life and has helped me to become the person I am today. I have thousands of precious memories but I want to highlight two in particular. The irst is the Mediterranean football cup tournament in Italy, where I lew out of Spain for the irst time, had amazing movements with my friends and coaches (Miss Mireille and Mr Stone), Chloe broke her toe, I met so many new people, had so many laughs, ate nice pasta and also played some football. Another great memory was the Morocco trip in M5, which really touched my heart. I realized how lucky we are to live in the conditions we live and to have the family we have, as there are others, not very far away from us, who have nothing. It is unimaginable how each one of us can move the world and just make a diference with just the simplest action. During all these years I have witnessed people come and go, I have perceived every change the school has made, I have seen the development of the people that have come along this journey with me and I have also experienced a transition myself. It has been a wonderful 16 years, with moments and friendships that will last forever.

Hi there! I am Tommaso Giancaterino and I am (proudly) an italian component of the SIS DP2016. I haven't been studying in Soto for a long time, since I only attended the Diploma Program here, but I loved it ... and I am sure that I will always have a special place in my heart for the experiences that I have hadhere. One of the experiences, that I surely won't forget, is the D1 charity trip to Asni (Morocco) for the Kindred Project. To summarise it, we basically organised an event (the "Kiss the Casbah") with food, music and live entertainment, through which we managed to raise money. With that money, we travelled to Morocco and helped improving the quality of life of the people living in a small town near Marrakech (Asni) thanks to charity work and commitment. This trip made me realize that my contribution, even if small, can really make a change in the life of someone who needs it, and I honestly feel a better person by just remembering what we have done in Asni as an year group, as a school and as friends. Talking about my favourite quotes, I must mention the following: "I get seasick, but only on boats!!!" (sorry Alex, I promised in Asni that you would end up here on the yearbook with this quote, and I always keep my promises buddy...). On a more serious one, I have to say that I LOVE the following quote on commitment by Samuel Beckett, and I feel that it represents me quite well: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better". To conclude, for the future I am planning to study Mathematics at the University College of London, and I am hoping to be able to use Maths to either enter the world of inance and economics or start a small business of my own. Let's see what the future has in store for me and for all of us of the DP2016 (and yes, I am a Math geek and I love it!). BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My love afair with the school has been a slow burner! I had to leave and re-join 3 times until I inally caught up with the “low” of how things go here. However, now I could not be happier. Thanks to this school I have developed as a person and I found myself here. I discovered theatre, which has simply made me a better person, I now “sing”. I have done things that I would have never imagined me ever doing. I’d like to thank all the teachers for putting up with me, always giving me that extra help, it has been really nice (sorry Miss Maes, “nice” is a wonderful word). I’d like to thank Miss Fiona for getting me out of the hardest lesson back in the day (English) and helping me to go through this school. I doubt I could have ever reach MYP without her. And Mr Jorge, I am still waiting for that paper airplane competition, I will never forget. To my friends I’d like to say, chavales, que yo no perdi la pelea del respeto, ME TROPECÉ! It has been great to spend so many years with you guys and girls. We have gone through so much unnecessary “drama” together, however we have always overcome it. I’m going to miss you all. Do not worry guys, there will always be space in my Hollywood mansion. I plan to go to the University of Sussex in Brighton to study Drama: Theatre and Performance. I would like to be an actor and make a decent living out of it. That’s the dream. However, if I win an Oscar or two it would be quite neat. In the meantime I am deinitely going to be an extra on Star Wars: Episode 8. A more realistic plan B? Well, I will probably be an out of work actor, waiting on tables, waiting for my lucky break! An actor’s life at its best. I would like to make a diference to our society; make people aware of the dangers that our way of living is producing. Let's hope I can tick this last aim of my list.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I am one of the few OG, SIS students left in our year. I’ve seen many friends leave along the way, but I’ve also been fortunate enough to see plenty of new ones arrive (and stay!). It’s with these people that I’ve had so many good times with. Whether it had been playing the legendary “logse v.” footy games, in class messing around not paying attention or most importantly school trips. These trips are clearly the highlight of our school years, getting lost with Ollie in Uganda, falling of the back of a moving van driven by Mr. Batten or nearly losing an eye when rafting, Uganda was raw fun. Other trips such as the one to Asni in D1, where we played an intense football game against the locals (that we ended up winning) but most importantly helped our neighbouring community, can also be considered as remarkable. IB history trip to London. MUN in Dortmund where not even the lack of sleep could stop me from being the best historical council delegate. ISTA trip to Istanbul, all packed of brilliant moments. Drama was a fun part of my school years, those classic lessons in M5 are unforgettable as was the Star Wars musical that we improvised the day before the deadline. Moulin Rouge was an awesome experience too, literally saving the show by becoming “Christian 2” a month before the show started, having the opening and closing lines was intense. It’s also worth to note how we (Jaime and I) became the best Basketball team in the coast, we are unstoppable. Simple things such as chair wars, knock-out, burger Friday, free periods, cross country, all topped of the fun moments in this school. Don’t let this paragraph fool you though, IB was packed of awful moments too, that I won’t, or can’t forget. I’m looking at you, IA’s… In the near future I plan to attend university in Madrid and study, something. I’m sure it will be a tough and challenging journey, but I’m conident that if I apply all my TOK knowledge to the real life, things should turn out just ine. I do hope though, that the “something” I choose to study, leads me to a future of excess. Whether it be a lifetime ticket supply of loor seats for Miami Heat games, an immaculate 6’4 Impala or going on tour with the Foo Fighters for a year or so. Whichever destiny chooses, I’ll be In the clear.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Some of my best memories from the school stems from being known as the school’s photographer. It’s allowed me to access behind the scenes on many of the many events like Moulin Rouge, SotoRox and multiple graduations where I’ve had a blast capturing and experiencing such a large range of emotions. Furthermore it’s been rewarding to see many of my photos printed and placed around the school as well as in the various yearbooks. Being here I have also been able to have amazing experiences such as visiting Uganda and Morocco, both multiple times, helping give me new outlooks on life. Another highlight was spending my lunchtimes in D1 building a surfboard with Mr. Barling in the middle of school, it wasn’t a looker and unfortunately didn’t surf well either but hopefully the next will be a little better. In the future I intend to study Computer Science in Nottingham, hopefully working as a Software Engineer or Photographer somewhere with access to regular surf and great people to photograph.

I’ve attended Sotogrande International School from nursery up until now (D2), I feel extremely privileged being given the opportunity to attend such a well-rounded school. During my time in this school I have experienced many moments, such as the annual bonding trips in Tarifa, sharing tents with people you wouldn’t usually share with and coming out of it as a big family. Going to Asni is another memory I will cherish dearly; being completely submerged into a diferent culture opens your eyes and makes you see the bigger picture. Sotogrande has also opened my eyes in the terms of realising what I love doing and what I don’t. Music and acting wasn’t always a passion of mine until I was given the opportunity to explore each subject in depth, this is when it began to bloom and I couldn’t get enough. I would play at every piano concert my piano teacher could get me into, I wanted to learn all there was to know about piano theory, and acting came to make at a later time but I still involved myself in the musical productions hosted by the school such as “Back to the 80s”. Throughout my time at this school I have met an array of diferent characters and made friends with some of the greatest people I’ll ever know. There were always tough times but I could count on them to make me cry with laughter even if it was the last thing I wanted to do. Without these people I don’t think I would have survived IB. My plans for the future... I know I want to attend university in London to study journalism. Then after graduation from this course I would like to become a famous foreign afairs journalist, who has her own opening slot in Sky News and travel the world looking for stories whilst getting paid to do so, but who knows what’ll happen in the future. Let’s take it one step at a time.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I have only been at the school for three years, but it really feels like much longer! I guess that’s because it isn’t just about the school but about the place in general. Everyone says it’s like a bubble here … I suppose it is, but it’s also somewhere that you'll miss millions when you leave and somewhere you’ll want to come back to over and over again. The people I’ve got to meet brought so much ‘new’ into my life and there were tons of things to learn. Plans for the future… at the moment I am still making up my mind about my plans for the next year (deinitely uni), but in about ten years I see myself rich and happy living the life I worked for, somewhere in Manhattan maybe…

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I have proudly devoted 12 years of my life to Sotogrande International School and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. So without further a do, welcome to my graduating yearbook page, where I’m supposed to summarize ALL my time here in no more than 500 short words. I guess this means it is time to say my good bye’ and thank you to this inspiring place. To bid a farewell to my teachers, my friends and the comforting walls of SIS is saddening and to be leaping into my future is extremely terrifying, yet all in all I am deinitely excited to see where I go. It has been a real pleasure and honor to grow up in such a diverse and multicultural community with some of the greatest people I will ever know. This school has given me more than just an education; it has shown me the values I should follow as a person, provided me with the most amazing experiences, introduced me to friends I call family, and most of all, granted me with the fondest memories that I will cherish forever. And for that, I am eternally thankful. All the memories I have made with friends and teachers behind the school gates are nothing in comparison to how much I have gained from the experiences beyond them. I have been to some remarkable places with incredible people thanks to SIS, from travelling by bus, boat, train and foot to visit the Tiwizi Association in Asni, Morocco, to travelling to London to take part in a theatre festival. Trips like this have changed my life by inspiring my future and showing me the ways of other cultures. The memories I have accumulated over the last dozen of years could never be compiled into these 500 words, but I would like to say this: All the good times I have shared with my classmates throughout the long list of MYP bonding trips and Morocco trips, the times I couldn’t hold back my tears from cracking up laughing, the teachers who allowed me to fall in love with subjects I’m not even particularly good at and the days I have spent side by side with my favorite people are what I am most grateful for, these are moments that have shaped me to be who I am today and will probably guide me towards who I am to become. My vision of the up coming future is fairly hazy at the moment but in the long term, maybe 10 years from now, I do hope to be working in the media industry possibly in cinematography or ilm production after having travelled to as many countries as I can. Even though my future is blurry I would like to think that this isn’t the last time you will be hearing of me.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Yo yo my name is Alvaro, A.K.A, Alvs, Albondiga, AlbondigaMarin, Albondi, Meatball....etc I have been at SIS for many years now (Since year 2). I have had great memories in SIS, too many to mention them all. All the ski trips to Sierra Nevada back in M2 and M3, the computer science lessons, the school events, like Sotorox., ireworks party.... Sotogrande and SIS will be remembered and hopefully I’ll come back to see how everything has changed, It’s been a long journey but now it’s coming to an end. My plans for the future is to go to uni in the UK, Bristol, where I’m going to study computer science, hopefully after that do further studies in software developing or Computer security, and in the long term become a millionaire by the age of 30 (hopefully). BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Although I have only been a part of SIS since M5, the last three years are packed with great memories which made my experience seem even longer. One of my favourite memories is the Geography Trip to Tarifa in D1 with Mr. Barling and Mr. Mclean, which was more like a trip with mates rather than a ield trip. Obviously, there were many other great memories that I will look back at with a smile on my face, such as the various musical events with Mr. Wicks, Paul and Mark and also being part of the irst SIS Eagles team to bring home the Portugal football trophy. Unforgettable were also the relaxed English lessons with Mr. Harris (Legend!) in D1 and of course the lessons with Ms. Maes in D2, especially the mediation sessions with Vanessa, which were always great fun. Future Plans: After spending a gap year to recover from the stress of the IB, I will go on to study International Management at either Bath or Surrey, UK or HULT International Business School, San Francisco.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Best memories from my time at SIS has to include the countless break/lunch times where we would play and laugh about everything and anything. The many knockout sessions that served great as excuses to ill out CAS requirements. So many trips, especially the team building one where I got into a tent with Victor and we both forgot to bring a sleeping bag/towel/jumper or any kind of mat to sleep on, and then we set up the tent next to a tree and had some not-so-comfortable roots to sleep on. Speaking of roots, can't forget the RUUT connection with Joel aka the lying Dutchmam. Another unforgettable moment was when Alvaro was caught by Mr Sanders watching some questionable content in computer science. As for future plans I want to study computer science engineering in university and maybe some day start my own company where our sole goal will be to plunge the world into darkness, send humanity back to the dark ages all while making BANK As ultimate ruler of the universe and all its constituents I shall ban all pineapple and/or tuna pizza and therefore bring balance back to earth.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I have only been two years part of this SIS community and the only things that comes to my mind are all amazing memories. This contributes all the great time in boarding, all the nights out in Pueblo and port, also living in a host family and the most important one, meeting some new friends that I already know are going to be friends for the rest of my life. Also I want to thanks not just the students, also the teachers, which they made me enjoy every single lesson, such as the economics lessons with Mr Mclean. This school has made me live some great experience such as the Asni trip and all the school events like Sotorox, irework party… and I know for sure that these two years will be remembered and hopefully my graduation will be a “see you later” rather than a “good bye”. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I’ve only been here for 2 years but it's deinitely been memorable. The best part of SIS for me has been the friends I've made and the time I've spent with them. It feels as if I've known them forever. My favourite memory of my time at the school has to be winning the Algarve cup in Portugal this year. It was an incredible experience made even better by beating the team from Italy in the inals, after they knocked us out in the semis last year. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I am a Swiss student who joined SIS at the beginning of the IB Diploma program. I initially came to Spain because of the phenomenal opportunity ofered to me by my parents; to study in a great school and complete the world-renowned IB Diploma successfully and to enhance my skills for one of my greatest passions, golf. The choice to come to Spain was the hardest decision ever, to leave my family and to come live in a boarding house in a diferent country. Despite the challenges of living overseas, I still see this as my life path because I believe in it and have learned so much. In SIS, I have found people who I am sure will be there for me, for a lifetime. To always be there for a friend and never give up is my will. The bonds of friendship that have been forged here will always stay with me and I hope that these friends will keep these memories of us together for as long as we live. My next destination will be into the far reaches of the Texas at McMurry University. There I will continue my studies and look forward to joining their University Golf Team (US National Collegiate Athletic Association) where I will give it my all. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Hello my name is Luna Sobrino I was born in Malaga attended SIS then moved to Uruguay when I was four for eight years came back and I’ve been in SIS since M3. The last two years of DP I’ve been doing long distance from Madrid. Thanks to the amazing staf I was able to manage school and work which made me learn and discover so many things I wouldn’t have thought I was able to do back then. I will always look back and think of SIS as a home every single teacher has pushed me to do my best and most importantly has believed in me. Starting from Mrs.Stone, she’s like a second mother to me she knows me too well and has never lost that strong belief in me. BEST MEMORY OF SIS: My name is Cameron Tait. I am an Irish student that has been attending Sotogrande International School since P6. I can speak luently in English, but have also been learning French and Spanish. Ever since I came to this school, I realized that my main ambitions and interests included studying in the ield of Computer Science; I am also passionate about my Business Studies. My hobbies include programming, graphic designing, photo editing, website designing and photography, which are all inluenced by my interest in Computer Science. I also enjoy competing in padel tennis and swimming. I always aim to achieve high, and reach my maximum potential when completing a task. My fondest memories of this school include the M5 Bonding Trip. I remember participating in activities such as hiking, canyoning, rock climbing and canoeing. It was also a great opportunity getting to know my peers more and having a great time. Another memory that I will be cherishing is the M5 trip to Morocco. I will never forget the moment we visited a local school to help with making the playground appear more lively. I got to experience not only teamwork as a year group, but I also got to participate in making a friendlier environment for the school kids. I enjoy eating regularly, as well as sitting on the couch. I plan to do a one month mathematics course in Amsterdam over the summer, in order to then study Computer Science at university. I enjoy playing lunchtime footie. Some of my favourite quotes that I have heard and my own which may or may not be out of context are "I love it when boys turn eighteen" (Whilst eating a celebratory birthday cake in class) Lisa Stone, this was by far the funniest thing I have heard from a teacher, and she immediately regretted it after she realized how she worded her sentence.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: I started school back in reception and have come all the way through to D2 surprisingly. I’ve met loads of people through the years, some cool some strange, but all in all my schooling experience has been good. I’ve gained a funny group of friends that helped me get through some of the longer days and had some teachers that actually made going to class bearable, which I very much appreciate. I’ve been at this school for too long now and wouldn’t really know where to start when talking about my best memories. You could say I’ve had too many to remember, most of them probably wouldn’t be published if I wrote them anyway! Some good memories would be the football tours, the Uganda and Morocco trip and the ski trips. Future plans include hopefully getting enough points then of to Kings College London. After a few years of Uni then I honestly have no idea, just going to ride it and see where I end up. Hopefully going to keep in contact with my mates, although probably not sure if that’s a good idea.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Going to Asni on the night train, Danielle, Dani, Ale, Jo Coventry, Vicky and I where all in a tiny bunkbed cabin playing cards throughout the night, listening to old songs which Jo was strumming to. Walking around Marrakech Market with Danielle and Dani was really cool. I tried to sell Danielle for 2 camels and a monkey, a few fake diesel belts. I couldn’t get a good enough deal so I decided to keep her. The Geography trip to Tarifa, collecting data for our coursework on the sand dunes, was really fun and spending time on the top of the dune was amazing. D1 bonding trip, swimming in the sea. I remember the magniicent waves and the view, it felt as if I was in a movie.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: Here I am, considering how to introduce myself and write about some of my fondest memories at SIS. To be honest with you I don’t even know where to begin. Although I have lived in four other countries before Spain, the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, and Morocco, the friends and memories you make in your graduating school is what truly stick with you for the rest of your life. This school has given me beyond incredible opportunities to shape myself into the person I am today and to form unbelievable experiences. One of the funniest trips I took part in I would say was the Geography trip. The most exciting aspect of the trip was the fact that I don’t actually take Geography! Even though most of us will perhaps attend university and go our separate ways, I must say that there are certain people that will remain in my heart forever. In the future I will be studying Psychology in the Netherlands and from there on out I will see where life takes me. In the summer of 2013 I took part in the annual Uganda trip. Every morning Mr. Wickersham would play his guitar and knock on everyone’s door whilst repeatedly saying “today is the irst day of the rest of your lives”. Moments such as these are the ones I will never forget. In 5 years time I hope to come back to Sotogrande, meet up with my friends, and see what paths they chose to take. Meanwhile, don’t count the days, make the days count.

BEST MEMORY OF SIS: What to say. I have had the best times of my life here. Ones I will never forget. I owe a lot to all the friends that I have met along my way in SIS. We have had many memories along the journey and still have many more to come. My best memories here have been with the veterans of the class of 2016. Some memories are unforgettable such as my huge mistakes I did in Spanish class, jumping over a fence over 2 meters tall almost breaking my whole body but laughter took over the pain and many more that will be there forever. I'm thankful for what I have achieved and gained from SIS and I hope that never changes in future years as it's such an amazing community. SIS will grow into something big but will never lose its touch as all the memories that I have had there thanks to the teaches and of course all my friends!

Best memories in SIS: It is hard to summarise 8 years of great memories spent at SIS. I can still clearly remember picking out my irst dress for the M1 prom with my mum, a moment I will always treasure especially as it seemed such an important milestone in my Secondary School life. Nor will I ever forget all those inter-school tournament victories along the coast with Ms. Mireille and Mr. Stone, two great and inspiring coaches with whom I also had an immense amount of fun, whilst at the same time always looking forward to the large bars of chocolate my dad would bring for us to share at the end of each game. Of course coming 3rd in the Mediterranean Football Cup in Milan back in 2012 (where EIC came 4 th place!) was a moment of pure joy! Go Eagles! It was such an honour to represent SIS, lying with our special Eagles jumpers to Milan, looking and feeling like a true team, and returning with our trophy. Taking part in the productions of Annie and Horton was not only great fun but also gave us the opportunity to miss classes! At least they were much better performances than the one in P6 at my irst “Back to School Party” singing (so badly) with Vicky, Zoe and Soia, “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne, that at the time seemed like such a good idea. Asni also holds incredibly special memories, a trip that taught me so much about a world outside of my own bubble, allowing me to bond with my peers at the same time as becoming more open minded about other cultures. Our long hike up the mountain and return to the village in a mixture of snow and rain however was both horriic at times and yet also so funny as we slipped and slid over the muddy ground, alternately holding each other up and falling, as most of us did, many times, including me on to the muddy ground. Huddling in front of the ire back at the Twizinni Association, getting the warmth back into our bodies was such a wonderful relief! Lastly there was the Doñana trip. Where to begin? I still recall those moments sneaking into each other’s rooms, gossiping about who had asked out who, playing “bloody knuckles” and how can I forget, the traditional game of truth or dare. Every school trip was an incredible experience for me and I am so pleased to have been part of such a great community, with teachers whom I will truly miss, that supported me throughout my entire time at the school and for whom I will always be grateful.
