’ey sistas! This is the time of year when
the things that we have. I am SO thankful for all of you who read and support this magazine because I truly do it for you. Even if I never made a dollar, I would still publish this magazine as a labor of love because I know that young ladies like you need it. This is issue that is all about THANKFULNESS...how to be thankful for what you have been blessed with and effectively show your thankfulness to those people in your life who help you. Leanna Archer (pg. 26) has been running her own business for 10 years since she was 9 years old. I hope that you read what she had to say and use it as inspiration. STEM Girls In STEM (pg. 9) took the Little League World Series by storm when she became the first girl to win a game. October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month so we wanted to give you some information to help with prevention. One of our features this month is about sistas for the cure who participated in walks to raise awareness. Another feature in this issue is about careers in STEM fields. I have been to several events recently for the magazine where there has been a BIG push to get young girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math. We have broken down these careers for you so that you can do your own research if you are interested. In this month’s sections, we will help you be thankful for what you have and show those in your life your gratutude during this holiday season.

In today’s society technology is being shown as something that is clearly here to stay and is making its way into each part of our lives. However, as technology continues to make itself present in our lives there is one problem that sticks out for some and that’s the lack of women engaged in technology.
By: Camille Daniels . It all starts with getting women when they are still young girls interested in STEM also known as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. So, how is STEM first made appealing to young women? It all begins with surveying young women and understanding how and when exactly does STEM go from being something possible to something no longer an option. One organization that has volunteered to take a closer look at this is The Girls Scouts of America. According to their research which can be found on their website they state that with the increase of technology becoming not only more part of everyday life but also with the lack of representation of Americans but especially young women including young women of color that more research needs to be done. The research also states that while young women are doing very well academically in STEM by the time it is go into the workplace young women are hard to find. When a woman graduates from college in engineering or in computer science she is one of only 20 percent to represent that sector according to the Girls Scouts conducted research. Overall, regardless of what area of the sciences a woman chooses to go into she amongst her fellow female counterparts only make up a quarter or 25 percent of the entire workforce. The Girls Scouts weren’t the only ones to conduct their own research on this topic. The National Girls Collaborative Project also has decided to take a look at this topic. In the research it conducted it found that one of the keys stems from both economics and the academic strengths and weaknesses of young people which can be based on race to a degree. The first being
academics. According to the project they found that in academics young women are taking higher level mathematic and sciences classes equating themselves to their male counterparts. Yet, when talking about physics or engineering there is a difference but doesn’t go into deeper explanation as to why. When talking about math and young women the best breakdown looks like this. For precalculus young women are coming it a 37 percent higher rate in taking those kind of classes over their male counterpart. It is a little over twice the amount when talking about even higher math courses such as Algebra II with young women coming in at 78 percent compared to males with 74 percent. Race and economics also play a role in all of this. For black or Latino girls they appear to fall below the rating of whites. The reasons for this are unclear but young girls of color will have to overcome a lot to conquer the field of STEM field according to the NGCP. For the young lady of color who is interested or appears interested in STEM wants to find a way to get involved the best way to do so is to find an organization that can help. One group is Black Girl Code which is all about getting black girls involved with STEM and making them positive examples of their communities out in California. This group located is in San Frisco and realized that there was something lacking for black girls in the heart of technology on the West Coast. So, with their classes on computer coding and introducing them to the gaming industry they have found ways to spark the minds of young girls of color in their area. The message is clear there are opportunities in STEM for women regardless of race and economics it’s all about the right access and discovering the passion for it. This message is especially important for young girls of color looking for something more. November 2014

Starting A New Skin Care Routine

The new year is the perfect time to make changes in how you take care of yourself, and starting a new skin care routine is a great way to start
1) Know Your Skin Type Developing your new routine is dependent on the type of skin you have: oily, normal/ combination, dry, or sensitive.
2) Cleanse Well Finding a cleanser that works well for your skin is the key. Once you find one, stick with it and don’t switch between two. Liquid facial cleaners work best and try not to use soap on your face because it will dry the skin.

3) Exfoliate This important step scrubs away the dead skin cells that cause your pores to clog, as well as dry skin and acne. Find a scrub with exfoliating beads and use it just once a week.
4) Skip Using a Toner If you use a good cleanser, it should remove all remaining oil, makeup and dirt on your skin and a toner isn’t necessary.
5) Moisturize Your skin should be moisturized no matter wht skin type you have. The face and body should be moisturized but pay special attention to your face by using special formulas. Your skin will determine how often you need to moisturize but try not to over-moisturize because it will clog your pores.

Movie Preview: Mockingjay Pt. 1 In part one of the final movie of the trilogy, Katniss finds herself defending her home, her family, her community and herself against the Capitol. No trilogy of books has shaken the grounds of young adult fiction quite like The Hunger Games. What makes it so special is that people of all ages enjoy Suzanne Collins’ engaging plot twists as she takes her readers on the journey of Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a 16 year-old hunter who has somewhat become the matriarch in her family after her father died and her mother shut down. She has a sweet younger sister, Primrose, who she loves and feels obligated to protect. Katniss and her family live in Panem under the harsh rule of the Capitol, led by President Snow. Twelve districts surround the Capitol, and due to a prior rebellion of the districts, the Capitol makes them send a girl and a boy between ages 12 and 18 to the Hunger Games. The Games are on live television. Tributes fight each other to the death and try to survive other

harsh conditions created by the Gamemakers. For the 74th annual Hunger Games, Prim is selected to represent District 12, but Katniss, being the protector that she is, volunteers to take her place. She is joined by Peeta, a boy she vaguely remembers from years ago, but who ultimately plays a crucial role in her new life. Through the use of skill and a strong will to survive, Katniss and Peeta both win the Hunger Games. This is a pleasing ending to them, as well as their fans. However, the Capitol viewed this as a sign of disrespect because only one person wins. The Hunger Games ends with Katniss discovering how the Capitol now views her, and she knows that she now has a target on her back. Catching Fire reveals the internal battle that Katniss is fighting a year later. She is having nightmares about the Games, determining whether
she loves Peeta or her childhood friend Gale, and wondering how she can prove to President Snow that she meant no disrespect to the Capitol by finding a way for her and Peeta to both live...or did she? Still struggling to find answers, Katniss finds Peeta and herself facing something she dared not experience again...back to the Games they go! Previous winners from each district must fight again. What one can expect from Mockingjay, named after the symbol of rebellion, is to see Katniss in a different light. She discovers that more people had been planning the outcome of the Games than she knew, and that there is a District 13! She does not know who she can trust because some close to her hid the truth. She feels angry and betrayed. Katniss becomes the rebels’ Mockingjay, but she has a plan of her own to defeat the evil Capitol once and for all. Viewers will find themselves holding on to their seats, for many unexpected turns are to come. They will feel the passion, the anger, and like a part of a do-or-die mission.

Breast Cancer
It’s never too early to start thinking about your breast health and learning ways to prevent breast cancer as you continue to grow and become a woman. As a young woman, you may have noticed that there is a lot of talk about breast cancer and specifically breast cancer awareness. You have probably also noticed several people sporting bumper stickers, t-shirts or keychains with pink ribbons in support of the fight against this particular cancer. Though the public’s awareness of breast cancer has been greatly improved in recent years, being aware is not quite enough. Now that we know that there is a problem in women’s health, the next step is to focus on the prevention of this devastating illness. While this cancer typically affects older women, young women like yourselves have the invaluable opportunity to take the steps to keep this cancer from ever taking root in your lives. Although some risk factors such as age and genetics may be beyond your control, there is plenty that you can do to give your body the help it needs to remain cancer free!
Know Your Breasts
First things first: get to know your breasts. While diagnostic testing is usually not recommended until the age of 40, you can familiarize yourself with the shape, feel, and look of your breast starting today. Keeping an eye on any changes in your breasts (after puberty) is necessary to be proactive in your breast healthcare. Any

changes you notice can be further examined by your family doctor.
Forget the Fat
By now you know that one of the best ways to protect your health is by consuming a healthy diet. This is true for breast health as well. According to www.kidshealth.org, women who consume a diet high in fat may be putting themselves at a higher risk for breast cancer. In addition to being mindful of your fat intake, you should also be careful to avoid cancer causing chemicals that may be in or around your food, such as the BPA found in many plastic food and drink containers. Be sure to read the labels and make good choices about what you put into your body.
Just Say No
Drugs and alcohol are known for their harmful effects on the human body. Unfortunately, human breast tissue is not immune to these effects. According to www.breastcancer.org, women who smoke or drink alcohol are more likely to develop breast cancer. The site also reveals that only 1 in 10 cases of breast cancer has a known genetic link. The other 9 are believed to develop as a result of unhealthy lifestyles, including use of alcohol and tobacco. By avoiding these substances you protect

Helping a Homeless Teen
Wake up, eat breakfast get ready for school, go to school, come home, do homework, have dinner, go to bed and repeat. Seems a bit mundane, and maybe even boring. Yet some kids would love to have that routine.
They would love to have a warm safe place to come home to every day and a hot plate of dinner every evening. Not everyone is that lucky. Homelessness doesn’t just refer to the creepy guy that sleeps at the bus stop in metropolitan areas. Homelessness can affect any one including families if their circumstance is rough. Family homelessness is caused by a

combination of circumstances such as; of lack of affordable housing, poverty, decreasing government supports, the challenge of raising children alone, the changing demographics of the family, domestic violence, or even lack of social support. As the gap between housing costs and income continues to grow, more and more families become at risk of homelessness.
During the Holidays
What to us seems to be a minor expense, may be a burden for some families. One thing we need to understand is that being homeless does not mean they are living on the streets. Homeless families may be living in their car or in a tent. They may even be bouncing between homeless shelters from night to night. One thing that is certain, children of homeless families are not given the opportunities other children have. They may not be getting the proper nutrients due to lack of resources and lack of a home. They may not be able to get their homework done because they do not have a safe place to do it at. What can we do to help? The biggest thing is to not take for granted what you have. Consider volunteering your time at a soup kitchen this holiday season. Also look up local nonprofit groups that work with homeless families, see if you can volunteer there throughout the year and see when their annual fundraiser is so you can help make a difference in your community.

A great nonprofit group in Charlotte to contact is Charlotte Family Housing. If you have a friend or class mate that you think is struggling (whether you know their situation or not) offer a helping hand. Don’t be blatant about it, just ask them if they would like to come over to your house after school to study and have dinner with your family. Every little thing helps. Be the support system they may not have. Be the shoulder they lean on, be the ear that listens or just be their friend. Help in any way possible without making them feel belittled or ashamed. Just remember the first rule in kindergarten, treat others the way you want to be treated.

How To Be THANKFUL
Do you know what it means in being thankful? Thankful is only one word but it has a very strong and empowering meaning to us all. When you think of being thankful for something or someone, who or what do you think about? Are you thankful for your mother or father? Are you thankful for your sisters or brothers? Maybe you do not have any siblings and just are thankful for your extended aunts, uncles and cousins perhaps? Are you thankful for the roof over your head? What about the food in your house that God has blessed you and your loved ones to have or the transportation that God has blessed you all to travel in each and every day? So as you can see, you can be thankful for anything and most importantly, be thankful for God giving you those things and placing those certain individuals in your lives. Another meaning for being thankful is when you are appreciative for what you have in your life, as well as for what you do not have. It is easy for us to give thanks to God for waking us up each day breathing in and out and enjoying our luxuries such as: our homes, cars, clothes and shoes that we wear, and just being able to get out and go as we please. But what about when the chips are down and you are not happy with your outcome of the way a certain situation turned out? Do you still feel unhappy about the situation because things did not go your way? No you do not because that will not get you anywhere. You just have to keep the faith in knowing that no matter the situation or outcome, things will get better. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it is a special time in thinking of what you are thankful for the most. Just being around your family, friends, or your loved ones can really put in perspective what being thankful really means. Most importantly, if you know who or what you thankful for, then there should not be any hesitation in telling them. For example, if you are thankful for your parents, then you should show them. 22

Some ways of showing them is by cooking them a meal or taking them out somewhere special, or even buying them a gift. Even if you do not have any gifts, just a simple “I appreciate you” or “I am thankful for you being in my life” is all that you need to show them just how much they are appreciated. You never want to take anyone or anything for granted, so when God blesses you with a loving family or material things that are to enhance your lives, do not take it lightly. I love this time of year that is approaching because we can spend time with our loved ones and really be there for each other. Always remember to be thankful in your lives because it really does go a long way.

Ways To Be THANKFUL

Have you paid your daily gratuity or it is just not quite the season? Every day people miss out on the opportunity to show gratitude but when the season of Thanksgiving rolls in, a manifestation occurs. Those who do not quite understand the meaning of gratitude are generally influenced by the season’s emotional nudge to show it and ultimately do. But, just like any season, when it is gone so is the “Attitude of Gratitude”. You may be experiencing family issues, academic struggles or fighting an internal battle but nothing beats those obstacles more than showing that you’re grateful.
It is a direct connection to every aspect of our being. So, it is essential to be thankful seless! It is time to find a way to exercise gratitude in every season life has to offer and here’s how:
Hit the Reset Button When you find yourself submitting to those negative thoughts or feel your emotions running over, hit the reset button and breathe. Ask yourself not only how you can see the positive but also how you can show it. Gratitude is a form of positivity. It acts just as the air we breathe, you can’t see it but you can feel it and so can others.
Spread The Word: Gratitude! Use your social media accounts to spread the word’s meaning to you. Do a countdown of spreading gratitude with you and your friends by positing something or someone you are grateful for daily. Set your own end date but remember that consistency becomes habit and habit becomes your nature. You want your “Attitude of Gratitude” to last you a lifetime!
Keep a Gratitude Journal
Take a few minutes out of your day to jot down the things you are grateful for and why. Studies prove that doing this, alone, will increase positivity and shift bad moods.
Give Back Has someone done something heartfelt for you or have you witnessed a good deed? Give it back by expressing your gratitude. Send a thank you card. Tell someone that you admire what they have done. These acts of gratitude will surely make both you and those around you thankful!

This is the time of year where people are excited about seeing family they haven’t seen in forever and to enjoy their company through laugher, food and excitement. But let alone Thanksgiving might be an exciting time of year for family, but it can also be stressful at the same time. What if you don’t have family to visit for the holiday? What if you don’t get along with your parents or family? Situations like these make it extremely hard for teens and others to enjoy themselves without getting too depressed. Instead of thinking about negative thoughts, fill them with uplifting ones because even in your situations, there can be something done to change your mood and your environment through times like these. Family is the key to everything almost because they are the ones you can run to if you are experiencing problems or they are the ones who can encourage you and lift you up when you are about to make a terrible mistake. It’s like the main ingredient to life in a way. Nobody’s family is perfect because if it was, then no one would experience melt-downs or break-downs. The key to happiness during the Thanksgiving holiday is to create a positive environment for you. This means filling your mind with positive thoughts that won’t ruin your holiday. If you have that one ignorant family member that never thinks before they speak, ignore the comments while keeping a happy face and a happy mind. No one likes the drama at the dinner table and one smart remark can lead to a total disaster. That is why you got to humble yourself and still smile through it all. Spice it up! Nobody wants to deal with the same Thanksgiving traditions year after year! You can plan to visit friends and hang out either the day before Thanksgiving or the day after. Here are some more creative things you can do with family for Thanksgiving: • Have a festive photo shoot outside with leaves and props • Games • Karaoke • Craft project • Going to the movies • Watching a movie after dessert If you are between parents and your parents are divorced, this may be a depressing time for you because even though your parents don’t live together, you still want to be able to spend the holiday with both parents. Still remain happy and keep a smile on your face. Maybe you can invite your dad over if you live with your mom or invite your mom over if you live with your dad. Most divorced parents do get along and can agree to spending thanksgiving together for the family sake. Instead of thinking about it, think about the excitement of seeing your parents and family. Make the conversations exciting and have unforgettable moments that will linger in your head. Also if you don’t have family at all, try going to a friend’s house or gather up some friends and do something special. Even if you don’t have family, remember that Thanksgiving is about being thankful.

eanna Archer has been recognized as a teen CEO to watch because at just the young age of 9, she started her own hair product line, Leanna’s Inc. She not only started it but has been running a successful business for 10 years that makes over $100,000 in revenues per year. Archer attends the State University of New York (SUNY) Farmingdale where she studies political science but is considering changing her major. As an entrepreneur and college student, Archer has to focus on balancing her career and education. “It has been challenging over the years because of the level of focus it requires,” Archer says. “When I was younger, I had the demand of school on me all the time. My business peaked for a while so I had to take it to a new level. My dad began working with me because my workload from high school was tougher.” “Now that I’m in college, it’s easier because I can arrange my schedule how I want and take online courses if I need to.”
Grandmother’s Recipe Archer started her hair company with her grandmother’s recipe that she used on her own hair. “The initial inspiration was the people who were potential customers and keep asking what I used on my own hair,” Archer says. “I got the idea and went to my parents for their opinion. They told me to wait but I don’t like to wait. I really tested my limits to see how far I could go and
Helping Her Heritage Archer began her own non-profit organization, the Leanna Archer Education Foundation in November 2008 which helps more than 300 children in Tabar, Haiti. She says that starting the foundation was mainly by coincidence. “I was visiting Haiti for the first time for an expo to sell my products and I saw kids the same age as me in the streets or homeless,” Archer says. “That played a big role in my decision to start my foundation and being of haitian heritage really did help me be compassionate towards the children because even I grew up in a different environment I wanted to help,” she says. “We serve about 300 kids and provide three meals a day for them as well as support for their families.”
Giving Others A Voice Archer also has an online talk show that spotlights unsung heroes and people who are doing things at a young age. “I try to recognize them and give them publicity for their business or organization,” Archer says. “I have done some recording but I put it on hold for now so that I can focus on other things,” she says. “I have so many things going on with the foundation and rebranding my company but I plan to start it back up soon.”
Following Her Own Path Archer also does motivational speaking where she talks to audiences about following their own path. She speaks all over the world all year round to youth and audiences of all ages. “One of my focal points is having a support system to help you in whatever you’re doing, especially parents supporting their children. I give insight on the possibilities that are out there for them when they follow their dreams,” Archer says. 28

STEM Success Archer is part of the success story of STEM, especially in the science field as she makes her own product. She says it’s a great career path to pursue because there are so many different categories. “If you love it, you should look for resources and information to use and people who can mentor and help you. It all starts with you and how hard you are willing to work for it,” Archer says.
Use Your Resources As someone who started her own business at age nine, Archer is a great person to look to as an example of success. She stresses that you must teach yourself and use the resources you have. “You can never learn too much. If you want to start your own business, don’t worry about money. Put out a product or demonstration and eventually a prototype. It wasn’t about making money for me at first but about making quality products,” Archer says. “People respond to the physical or what they see. It was stressful but I built this company from nothing,” she says.

I would do anything for them,” Archer says. Archer’s definition of being her “sista’s keeper” is to be there for them and support them in everything. “To me, it means being a support system for them the same way you would want them to be for you. That strong bond is important because we all share the same struggles and challenges so we have to work together and help each other.”

In the 21st Century, where technology is booming and science is continuously evolving, there is still a shortage of growth in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), especially for women. The field of STEM has become the crème de la crème of careers and the land of innovation for the future because the opportunities are endless. Yet the possibilities for women to obtain such careers are shockingly low. Studies have discovered various reasons for the gap: Educators inability to make the subject fun enough to indulge in, poor preparation (Teaching methods, classroom climate) and a lack of nurturing. You may have an interest in science or haven’t even considered it because of these reasons. But, before you criticize your teachers know that it is a known fact that women are unrepresented in the field while the men and other races are dominating in STEM. The census bureau conducted a survey which highlighted the Disparities in STEM and the truth lies within the numbers. “Among science and engineering graduates, men are employed in a STEM occupation at twice the rate of women: 31 percent compared with 15 percent. Nearly 1 in 5 female science and engineering graduates are out of the labor force, compared with less than 1 in 10 male science and engineering graduates.” Does that mean our women must work twice as hard then the men for the same careers? Yes it does! In fact, our African American woman must work three times as hard because “Blacks and Hispanics have been consistently underrepresented in STEM employment. In 2011, 11 percent of the workforce was Black, while 6 percent of STEM workers were Black (up from 2 percent in 1970).” Which means that our black men are right behind you, fighting the struggle. Nevertheless, there is still promise! Take a look at the potential career options in just Science alone and some tips to start early in pursuing a promising career in the field of STEM: Although there may be obstacles in obtaining a career in STEM, anything is possible! Look up similar careers as well to assure that you are solid about your decision. Also make a list for where and what you see yourself doing in the two, four, five years. Seeing even a basic timeline will keep you focused. Find a Mentor: the best thing you can do when preparing for a future is to find a mentor that can help direct you, provide you with sound advice and encourage you throughout the journey. Particularly someone older and, possibly, versed in the field you wish to pursue. Find Internships: seeking out internships are essential to building and growing in your journey to success. This gives you the opportunity to learn, train and grow in the field and possibly get paid to do so. Terrific Technology Overall women are underrepresented in the technology field. According to Forbes, only 24 percent of the technology field is made up of women. Despite the growing numbers of opportunities in the field, the percentage of women in technology are steadily decreasing. The reasons vary as to why this may be, most mentioned reason being an issue of sexism; women do not feel comfortable in the field feel more like outsiders compared to the men. Alongside this, very few percentage of women seek degrees in the technological field. Women who do graduate with a Bachelor or Master in Business Administration do not seek out these jobs or leave the field because it doesn’t suit them well. It has been proven that companies with gender diversity on their executive are more profitable. Having the women bring in different perspectives that were not available before. Computer Network Architect Computer network architects design and build data communication networks, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. These networks range from a small connection between two offices to a multinational series of globally distributed communications systems. Network architects must have extensive knowledge of an organization’s business plan to design a network that can help the organization achieve its goals. Computer network architects also create models to predict future network needs. They look at current data traffic and estimate how growth will affect the network. They keep up to date on new hardware and software technology and test how it can improve network performance. Network architects also have to keep security in mind. When network vulnerabilities arise, they implement security patches or other countermeasures. They use a variety of techniques to design computer systems such as data-modeling, thereby allowing analysts to make faster decisions. Analysts conduct in-depth tests and analyze information and trends in the data to increase a system’s performance. Analysts calculate requirements for how much memory and speed the computer system needs. They prepare flowcharts or other kinds of diagrams for programmers or engineers to use when building the system. Analysts also work with these people to solve problems that arise after the initial system is set up. Most

DBAs sometimes work with an organization’s management to understand the company’s data needs and to plan the goals of the database. They are responsible for backing up systems to prevent data loss in case of a power outage or other disaster. They also ensure the integrity of the database, guaranteeing that the data stored in it come from reliable sources. (US Bureau of Labor) Yearly Salary: $77,080 Requirement: Bachelor’s Job Outlook: 15% Information Security Analyst Information security analysts install software, such as firewalls, to protect computer networks. They plan and carry out security measures to protect an organization’s computer networks and systems. Their responsibilities are continually expanding as the number of cyber-attacks increase. These analysts must continually adapt to stay a step ahead of cyber attackers. They must stay up to date on the latest methods attackers are using to infiltrate computer systems and on IT security. Analysts need to research new security technology to decide what will most effectively protect their organization. This may involve attending cyber security conferences to hear firsthand accounts of other professionals who have experienced new types of attacks. What exactly is engineering? Engineering associates the fields of science and math to solve real world problems that progress the world around us. There are many concentrations in the field of engineering (architect, electrical, mechanical, marine, etc.) Many people choose the pathway to engineering for different reasons; two being: they have a passion for it and it pays very well. Below is a table of the different concentrations in engineering, their educational requirements, their wages, their growth and what their focus is. How are women represented in the field of engineering? Women are not highly represented in engineering. Engineering is viewed as being a male dominating career. A lot of women who graduate with engineering degrees either never enter the career field, or they leave only after a few years. There are a variety of reasons as to why women never enter the career field of engineer or leave after a few years; poor workplace climates and mistreatment by managers and coworkers are reasons as to why women leave their careers in engineering. Women are overall unrepresented in the mathematics career field. With that being said however, there are certain positions in STEM that have higher percentages of women workers. For instance in mathematics accountants and auditors are 60 percent women. It is important for women to step up to these roles dispel the notion that women are not as good at math. Research shows that many women opt out of a career in STEM because they are simply uninterested. Women rather study a living subject like arts and humanities. Dream a Dream That Only God Can Fulfill By: Breana Jones Keep Rising! Girl
Great success and achievements always start the same, and it’s up to you to dream big. There is no limit to how big you can dream. Many people think that dreams are nightly thoughts, but actually they should be goals and plans that set your heart on fire. As a young girl you probably have huge dreams that would make you millions of dollars, travel to space, become a movie star or even be a member in a band. You have adopted a sense of surety that makes you believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. Unfortunately, that outlook on life begins to change as we grow up. But why is that? As we grow we allow life to take those dreams away from us. We allow life to become our reality instead of living optimistically. Yes, growing up is a part of life but sometimes we have to slow down and have an outlook on the world remaining as young girl, with vigor and promise. The same dreams you have as a girl can still be the dreams you have when you become an adult. A dream begins with knowing what you want. A dream doesn’t drive you; it draws you. God designed you to dream; He desires that you do more to make your dreams come true with His
help. When we dream without God, our lives seem unsatisfied and empty. Jeremiah 29:11 states; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Therefore, we must realize that our lives have a purpose. We have to realize that God planned for each one of us to be upon this earth, at our specific time to fulfill His purpose in our lives and the lives of others. As girls we must understand that not all dreams originate from God but those that do originate from him we have to allow Him. Remember, any dream nurtured by God cannot be stopped! Ephesians 3:20 states; Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. If you have a dream, give it to God He can do more than you can imagine. So here’s your challenge, dream a dream so big that only God can fulfill it!

Thankfulness is the Key to Happiness In Life By: Jasmine M. Lewter Keep Rising! Girl Meister Eckhart, a German theologian and philosopher, said “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” Thankfulness and gratitude is important in our lives as young girls. To be thankful is simple as young girls we must have the feeling or express gratitude as well be aware and appreciative of benefit. I am very grateful for the life that God has given me. I have two older sisters that I love and very supportive parents. As I think of gratitude and having a spirit of thankfulness, I am a reminded of a quote by Albert Schweitzer, a German theologian. He said, “To educate yourself for the feeling of gratitude means to take nothing for granted, but to always seek out and value the kindness that will stand behind the action. Nothing that is done for you is a matter of course. Everything originates in a will for the good, which is directed at you. Train yourself never to put off the word or action for the expression of gratitude.” No matter how young we are, as girls we have the power to be thankful and appreciate others as well as appreciate things that someone has done for you. As my parents have taught me, expressing gratitude is the beginning of respect, generosity, concern and appreciation for those around you. It is always important to make sure you show people that you are grateful for their presence as well as the things they do for you. Did you know that letting someone know you appreciate them is one of the best things you can do for a person? By showing appreciation can help increase their self-esteem and make them feel that they are needed.

As girls, we are faced with reality television and actions of our peers that do not show us how to appreciate each other. However, I encourage you to be gracious for your life no matter what you are facing. I challenge you to help raise someone’s self-esteem by having a spirit of grace. I encourage you to say, “thank you.” Tell your teacher thank you. Tell your parents thank you. Appreciating the little things in life, like waking up every morning, having a roof over your head, having a family to love and friends to be loved by will increase your self-esteem, and it could change your perspective on life. You can show gratitude to people by returning favors or giving gifts, and of course by saying, “thank you”. Gratitude is important if you want to have a life well lived. In today’ s world its importance is forgotten because we get so caught up in wanting materialistic things, having faulty priorities and taking rather than giving. Showing appreciation for life’s blessings and gifts is natural and necessary. People should promote the feeling of gratitude more than the feeling of entitlement. There are diverse ways to increase your experience and expression of gratitude. As I mentioned above in a quote by Schweitzer, increasing our awareness of gratitude may require that we teach ourselves to think in a different way. This can be done by regularly by saying, “Thank you” and truly meaning it. You can also start conversations with your friends and family or starting conversations about what you are thankful for may help someone else create a moment of gratitude in the life. The more you remember what you are grateful for the less you will take it for granted. “In life remember to appreciate the little things, show gratitude, and never take anything for granted.”

Gratitude Girl: 7 Life Hacks to Being Thankful By: Asiah Lemon Girls Who Lead Look around you. No matter who you are, the color your skin or your background, there is something to be thankful for. A roof over your head, the food in your fridge, your family and friends are all precious gifts. Every day that you are in good health, can get up and go to school, or grab a glass of clean water to drink is a special moment. When you begin to recognize the goodness within your own life and make positives choices in an effort to be grateful for those things, you will see that every day there is more and more to be thankful for. The following life hacks are great tools to help you discover your inner leadHERship, strive for better within yourself and increase your level of Happy!
Keep a Daily Gratitude List Write down at least 3 things you’re grateful for each day. It can be as simple as “I am grateful to be on the cheerleading team” or “ I am grateful for my amazing family”. Practice acknowledging good things each day and soon you will find them everywhere you go. I encourage you to add new things to your list, (it will get easier day by day) because we all have a ton of things we can be grateful for. Expand your mind and feel the gratitude flow in! (This is a great parent/daughter activity.)
Start Making Thankfulness a Priority Your needs matter and so do others! If you don’t value yourself, look out for yourself, and stick up for yourself, how are you going to recognize the value in others? Remember, it IS possible to be thankful for what you have to offer to the world while simultaneously caring for those around you. Once you make thankfulness a priority within yourself and when your needs are met, you will likely be more capable of helping those who need you most.
Live in the Present ‘Right now” is like a miracle. Right now is the only moment guaranteed to you, so why not live it up! Be grateful, thankful and appreciative for these moments. So stop thinking about how great things will be in the future. Stop focusing on what did or did not happen in the
past. Learn to be in the ‘here and now’ and experience life as it’s happening. Appreciate the amazing world we live in and ALL of the beauty it holds, right now.
Enjoy The Things You Already Have The problem with many of us (myself included) is that we all think we’ll be happy when we reach a specific goal in life. For example, you finally get the popular boyfriend, you make the basketball team or take 25 pics before we find one that will get over 11 likes on Instagram, etc. Unfortunately, it takes a while before you get there, and when you get there, the excitement will only last for a short time and you’ll likely have a new destination in mind. You will end up spending so much time working toward something new without ever stopping to enjoy the things you have now. So take a quiet moment every morning when you first wake up to appreciate where you are and what you already have.
Start Being Thankful For What You Have To Offer In life, we are often thinking about being perfect, and in reality no one is. We should all try to figure out what we can do to help make the world a more awesome place and be thankful for the opportunity to do so. Life is all about taking a chance, making mistakes and being okay with it. You will never be 100% sure that it will work out, but you can 100% sure that doing nothing but complaining won’t work! Most of the time we just have to take a leap of faith and go for it! No matter the result, it will always end up the way it should be. Through it all you either will succeed or learn another lesson. Be thankful that you have something to offer and don’t waste your talents. Having a bad day---seek help by looking at others. Start noticing what you like about other people and tell them! And before you know it, any bad day you have will be cheered up in no time. From my own personal experience this really works! When you have an appreciation for the awesomeness around you, it can lead to a more productive, happy and peaceful day. Give a high-five, cheer on your friends victories and be thankful for their blessings. Have you heard of the saying “What goes around comes around “? Sooner or later you will be more thankful and forget about all of your troubles.

If you are hurting and upset give yourself time to be angry - but not for long. Talk to the people closer to you and be open about what is making you upset and tell the TRUTH. No matter your age, there is a great feeling about getting things off your chest and letting it go. So if a friend is not talking to you over some boy, let it
go and be thankful that you are a good friend. If you are angry at your mother or father, find a special way to talk to them when things are settled down and be thankful that they are willing to listen. African-American physicist, space scientist and mathematician who worked for the aeronautics and space program at NASA 1918: Born on August 26 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. From a young age, she enjoyed mathematics and could easily solve mathematical equations. 1932: Graduated from West Virginia State High School at age fourteen. 1932: Received her B.S. degree in French and mathematics from West Virginia State University (formerly West Virginia State College). 1940: Attended West Virginia University to obtain a graduate degree; was one of the first African Americans to enroll in the mathematics program. 1953: Joined Langley Research Center (LaRC) as a research mathematician for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA); became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958. 1959: Joined the Spacecraft Controls Branch where she calculated the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American to go into space 1962: Johnson also verified the mathematics behind John Glenn’s orbit around the Earth 1969: Calculated the flight trajectory for Apollo 11’s flight to the moon 1986: Retired from NASA • •
