Happy Holidays from Sista’s Keeper Magazine!!!!!
Letter
Hwe have to be thankful for this holiday
ey sistas! There are a lot of things that
season...I KNOW I DO!
I just received my Master’s degree in August and celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the magazine. I’m thankful that God continues to bless me with my dream being more & more fulfilled with each issue. Disney star Zendaya (pg. 32) is taking her experience on Dancing With The Stars to move forward from “Shake It Up” to the release of her self-titled debut album. The 17-year-old has made her own lane as far as her music and we can’t wait for more from her. Saretta Wilson & Shamerah Norman (pg. 9) were two contestants in this year’s Miss Black USA Talented Teen pageant in Arlington, VA. I served as a judge in that pageant and had the pleasure of seeing both girls in action. They are both great role models for you to get to know and connect with, as well as both having platforms that this magazine can get behind. We look forward to working with them in the future. This issue’s theme is Gratitude and you can find helpful tips for how to be thankful and how to know what to be thankful for (there is a difference between priviledge and right) so you can know (pg. 26-29). Breast Cancer Awareness is something that is a HOT topic every year around this time. It’s easy to wear pink and attend a race but breast health is a YEAR-LONG necessity. Whether yours are BIG or small, the key to prevention is taking care of yourself and every girl must know how to do that (pg. 22).
Tell us what you think! Join the conversation... #SistasKeeper
This month, we also give you a holiday gift giving guide to help you get presents for the people who you love most (pg. 42). Every one is different and has different taste, but this guide will help you get started on your shopping this holiday season. As always, if you want to contact me or have any questions about the magazine, email me at: laporsha@sistaskeepermagazine.com or visit our website: www.sistaskeepermagazine.com Remember the purpose of Sista’s Keeper: to build you up as young women so you can be comfortable enough in yourself to help your sisters, cousins, friends, etc. I hope that you enjoy this issue and remember:

Winter

The best part of the falling leaves is bracing for the
Chill-Free Coils This one goes out to the big hair lovers and the naturals! Teyana Taylor is best known for her wild coils and making them look effortlessly perfect. The key to rocking this look like Teyana is to think bold and be confident. There are a few ways to achieve this care free winter look but I will share my two favorites. The first way is simply to cornrow or plait your hair the night before so that when you take the braids out in the morning your hair has a curl to it.
Pure Beauty Ponytail Speaking of classic the beautiful Zendaya Coleman is the definition of pure beauty with her chic high ponytail. We’ve all donned the ponytail look but the reason why this style works for the winter months can be summed up in one word: Simplicity. Tightly position at the crown of your head this look creates instant elegance and can be accessorized with a layered scarf or my favorite, hoop earrings. 10

wintry breeze of hair trends of the season.
Breezy Bob The Queen herself knows how to switch it up for the season! With its easy maintenance and versatility, a Bob is perfect for the Winter season. The best way to pull off a Bob is to have an edgy cut adding shape and elegance to your look. You can sport bone straight tresses or add fun and flirty waves to your style like the beautiful Mrs. Carter. No matter how you style your Bob you can’t go wrong with this classic Grown Woman silhouette.
Magnificent Marley Twists This look has been popping up all over since the warm summer days have come to an end. Ms. Solange Knowles is a Winter Goddess with her Marley twist tossed every which way. This style is for the ladies who have to get up, make a cup of hot cocoa and hit the chilly streets without having to worry about styling. So how do you achieve this look? Well the number one thing you’ll need is Marley hair which is thick and course in texture but is key to getting this look. It is possible to do this style at home but it takes time and patience. Jennifer Hudson in “Winnie” The movie tells the story of Nelson Mandela’s wife.
Winnie tells the story of the wife of South African leader Nelson Mandela. The movie spans from the 1950s, before Winnie and Nelson met, through the 1990s after he was set free from prison and tells the story about how Winnie helped fight the government to end the apartheid regime. Everyone is learning the story of Nelson Mandela and how he was imprisoned for 27 years for trying to
stop the oppression of black South Africans through books and movies like Invictus and the upcoming Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which stars Idris Elba, but few know of the story of his wife who continued with Nelson’s message while he was in prison. Nomzamo Winfreda Zanyiwe Madikizelawas the sixth girl born to her tribal village’s teacher, who wanted a boy and she compensated by learning to fight like one. As a teenager, Winnie was sent to boarding school in Johannesburg, where she first met young lawyer and future anti-apartheid leader. After Nelson was imprisoned on the charge of treason, Winnie continued to stay in the country to fight for what she believed was right, deciding not to go to America to finish her studies.
Her fight for equality was marred by poor decisions that led to the kidnapping and death of a 14 year old boy, for which Winnie was herself imprisoned for 18 months. After she was released from solitary confinement, some South Africans felt that her choices were bad for the movement for equality and tried to distance themselves from her and her involvement in the fight to end apartheid. While the movie shows a long stretch in Winnie’s life, starting with before she and Nelson were married, I still felt like more of her story and struggle could have been told. Especially after she was sent to solitary confinement and alienated from the group that stood behind Nelson for his entire 27 years of imprisonment and even after his release.

What You Need to Know About Your Breasts
Your breast health is important. As October ends and a new month begins, all the big-to-do about breast cancer will fade, but do not forget to continue to take care of your body. It is the only one you will get...be well! Every year around October some pretty “scary” things begin to happen. Typically normal people dress up as everything from ghost and ghouls to vampires, werewolves, and witches. TV stations and movie theatres pull out all the stops to bring you the most horrifying entertainment events of the year. Even loving, protective parents turn out all the lights and indulge their kids with their most frightening ghost stories . However, if you paid attention, you might have noticed that there was another popular, equally scary topic of discussion over the last month. That topic is breast cancer. Each October people around the country join together in the effort to raise awareness for breast
cancer, focusing on education, prevention, and the eventual cure of this terrible illness. In case you missed it, Sistas’ Keeper has put together some information to help you learn more about what breast cancer is and what you can do to avoid falling victim to the disease. Remember, while this cancer doesn’t usually affect younger women, it’s never too early to take control of your health! Knowing Your Body One major weapon you can use against breast cancer is a comfortable familiarity with your own body. It is tempting to depend on your doctor or Continued on pg. 21
THE BREAST EXAM breasts. Do not be alarmed if they do not look the same in size or shape. Most women’s breasts are not. With your arms by your sides, look for changes in size and shape, or any changes to the skin of your breasts. These changes can be puckering, dimpling, sores, or discoloration. Inspect your nipples also looking for any sores, peeling, or change in the direction of the nipples.
How Do I Perform a Breast Self-Exam? Most people have no idea how to perform a breast exam. Most of the time people do not do their exams because everything feels lumpy and bumpy, and it is very confusing. If you get used to what your normal lumpy bumpy is, then when something is there that was not there before, you will know the difference.
The breast self-exam is a way that you can check your breasts for changes such as lumps. It includes looking at and feeling your breast. If you notice any changes you should report them to your doctor. When breast cancer is detected in its early stages, chances of surviving the disease are greatly improved.

Also, the best time to do your breast exam is just after you menses (period) has ended. Your breast are less lumpy and bumpy during that time. Your self-breast exams can begin between 18-20 years old. Should you choose to do your breast exam, you can complete the exam in the mirror and in the shower or while lying down.

Next, place your hands on your hips and press down to tighten the muscles beneath your breasts. Turn from side to side to look at the outer part of your breasts

your parents to monitor your health but it’s much more effective when you help in the process. There are two main things that you want to be aware of when it comes to breast health. The first is your monthly cycle. As you may know, changes in your body’s hormones throughout the month can cause changes in your breasts. According to Dr. Leeya Pinder, the estrogen and progesterone produced by the body can cause tenderness, swelling, and pain in the breasts, particularly just before menstruation. Use this knowledge to be aware of any pain or discomfort that does not coincide with your monthly period. The second thing you want to know is the makeup of your own breasts. Once your breasts are fully grown (usually between 18-20 years old), you should become familiar with their size and shape, taking note of any unusual changes. Beyond this, you should check your breast tissue for the infamous “lump”. Most people know that lumps in the breast are

a sign of cancer. But what most people may not know is that the breast is already naturally lumpy. In order to distinguish between your natural glands and cancer, you should begin familiarizing yourself with your breast through a monthly selfexam done right after your period. The sooner you begin this process of self-examination, the better you become at spotting anything that may not be right with your body.
Protecting Your Body The major component in prevention is PROACTIVITY! This means that the best way to keep cancer away is to develop good habits that benefit your body and help it to heal itself. One way to do this is through weight management. Keeping your body weight at a healthy level is best done through making consistent healthy choices. If this is a lifestyle that is new to you start out slow, Continued on pg. 44
Are You Aware? Breast Cancer Preventative Tips
By: Yani Long
Do you know what breast cancer is? It’s estimated that 39, 510 deaths will occur in 2012 due to breast cancer. The cause of breast cancer is harmful tumors that are comprised of the spreading of abnormal cells which are cancerous. Breast cancer and breast cancer deaths typically occur in women that are age 50 and older. Although it’s uncommon, five percent of women under the age 40 can be diagnosed with breast cancer. As a young woman you want to be mindful not only of your future but the future of your health. It is important to get your annual check-up and have your breasts examined for lumps. Lumps found in the breasts are usually the first sign that a tumor is present; however, all tumors are not harmful so it won’t necessarily mean that cancer is present just because a lump is there. It is important to understand and become knowledgeable about what breast cancer is and its symp-
toms. Although it is rare in teens and younger women it is extremely vital to take care of your body and learn the risks to prevent breast cancer from occurring. Some risks include birth control pills, age, obesity or being overweight, family history of breast cancer, early period, and last but not least second hand smoke. You want to reduce breast cancer risk by: • Talking to your doctor about it when you go for your annual check-up • Become familiar with your breasts and learn how to perform breast self-exams • Maintain your weight by eating healthy • Exercise • Avoid smoking and alcohol Learn your body and get informed. Relationships
Respecting the God wants us to live an abundant life. He doesn’t
RESOLUTION: Because Jesus offers real forgiveness, I will not let guilt dominate my life. I will repent of sin and ask for God’s forgiveness. I will forgive myself and live a life of victory. You can experience the freedom that comes from the forgiveness of God. It’s natural for us to feel guilty; sin has terrible effects on all of our relationships, especially our relationship with God. He is willing to completely forgive us for sin and wipe away guilt. But what if you honestly seek His forgiveness and from the people you’ve hurt, but you still feel guilty? God is serious about sin but also about forgiveness.
Forgiven God’s Word promises that He not only forgives sin, but completely takes away our guilt. Fill out the following Bible verses: “If we _________ our sins, He is faithful and just and will __________ us our sins and __________ us from all __________. (1 John 1:9) “For I will __________ their __________ and will __________ their sins __ __________.” (Hebrews 8:12) “Therefore, there is now no __________ for those who are in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 8:1)
Turn Away The Bible says that we must repent* of our sins (Acts 2:38). God is calling us to turn away from our sins, and to choose to be obedient to him. Repentance involves a feeling of remorse, but it also involves a commitment to be different. Which of the following shows repentance? • I can’t believe I did that. It will never happen again. • It doesn’t matter. God will forgive me. *Repent- to turn away

Opposite Sex
Relationships
want is to wallow in guilt over past sins. Can’t Let Go
Me, a Sinner? When you think of sin in your relationship with the opposite sex, you probably think of having sex before marriage, which the Bible calls FORNICATION. While the Bible clearly says that sex outside of marriage is wrong, that is not the only place Christians struggle. In fact, you may have never been alone with a member of the opposite sex and still be guilty of sin in your relationships. 1. At times, I have touched a member of the opposite sex in a way that should be reserved for my life-long mate. (Proverbs 5:15-17; 20) 2. I sometimes entertain lustful thoughts about the opposite sex. (Proverbs 6:25) 3. I have at times tempted members of the opposite sex to sin by the way I walk, talk or dress. (1 Corinthins 10:32) 4. I don’t make God the center of my relationships with the opposite sex. (Colossians 3:17) 5. I sometimes ignore God’s standards for sex and do what I want to do. (Hebrews 13:4) If you can identify with any of those sins, ask God to forgive you and ask Him for the strength to change.
God does not want you to live with a sense of guilt. He wants you to live free of the bondage of sin, forgiveness is freeing. Write a word or draw a symbol that represents any sin for which you have asked forgiveness but still feel guilty. Reread the resolution and write your own here: ____________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________

How To Be Thankful
Jando
“Initiation”
Gratitude is a state of mind. It takes a conscious mindset and a willingness to stop and take notice of everything that makes life better, more convenient, and more fulfilling. Know The Difference Between Rights And Privileges In today’s world of modern conveniences, we take many things for granted. We don’t realize that conveniences are privileges rather than our rights. For example, it’s the right for us to be clothed, but it’s a privilege for them to wear designer jeans. We don’t need to earn their rights but they do need to earn their privileges. Discover the blessings you have been given. Be A Model Of Gratitude That means show it, recognize it, and appreciate it when you see it. Nothing feels better than being appreciated for the little things. Show gratitude for others when they help you or do something to make your life a little more convenient or worthwhile. Keep A Positive Attitude It may sounds corny, but a grateful, positive outlook tends to make life, well, more positive. Every morning, find something for which to be grateful. Acknowledge Failure And Frustration Owning your weakness is the first step to learning and improving. Adding humor to the situation when possible/appropriate will help lighten things too. Find The Good In The Situation. Many situations which appear “bad,” often can result in something good. It may be tough, but try to be a “good-finder”. The benefit is to look for the good and not be so quick to complain. Introduce the Gratitude List Get in the habit of using a gratitude list. Gratitude
journaling encourages you to write down all the things you’re thankful for and the things that can help you overcome challenges. Studies show that people who keep gratitude journals feel better about their lives as a whole, were more optimistic, and less stressed. Take On Responsibilities When you take on more and more responsibilities, you begin to learn what it takes to run a successful household, how fortunate you are to have help, and how it feels to give back to the people you love. Not only does it make things easier for your parent, but it can even provide some quality time in which you and your parents. Enjoy Privileges It can’t be “all work and no play.” Hang out with friends, go to the movies, or simply have time by yourself. This will let you be more grateful for downtime and build trust and appreciation between you and your parent. Make A Thank-You Box Make a box that you can use to place in weekly wishes and requests, at the beginning of the week. At the end of the week, take a look at the wishes that were granted, and then give thanks for them. Those that were not granted remain in the box until granted. Encourage Service When we help others, gratitude blossoms. On the one hand, people who do charity or help others who are less fortunate, can see how fortunate they really are to have many gifts and blessings in their lives. HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE
Ndege
“Flight”
This time of year, you will be surrounded by family from far and wide, some who you get along with and some not. Here are some tips to survive family mess. You’ve been looking forward to a few days out of school and your wish is about to come true. What you may NOT be looking forward to, so much, is the holiday season with your family. Sure, the food is absolutely incredible and you miss your cousins who live several states away, however, you will also see some of those relatives that make holiday time a bit, interesting to say the least. At the end of it all, whether your family is dramatic, fun-loving, awkwardly quiet, or a mixture of all of it, every family has its history, maybe some untold secrets, and various dynamics. Each of our families contribute to who we are and how we view the world. THIS year, instead of rolling your eyes at a relative, see if you can catch them in a moment, one on one, and ask them what they were doing when they were your age. You may learn a bit more about why she’s so angry, and gain some insight into your family’s history. Remembering that the root word of ‘relationship’ is ‘relate,’ most families are in need of some healing, so we can find a way to relate with everyone. That healing begins with honesty, and most of us are not honest because we are afraid of various things like judgment and not being heard. So if we desire to have

better relationships within our families, here are a few things we can do this holiday season: 1. Listen: Sometimes we can put the pieces together by just keeping our ears open. 2. Release judgment: Most of us judge, however, as we listen to folks speaking, put ourselves in other people’s shoes and just take things for what they are. 3. Be honest: Many of us don’t know how to tell the truth. Be an example of integrity. 4. Reach out: If a cousin is sitting alone outside while everyone else is partying inside, ask him if he would like some company. He may just want to be alone or he may be uncomfortable to be around everyone else for some reason. 5. Be grateful: Although our families have their issues, celebrate the good times and count our blessings every moment. You may not be the ‘Iyanla Vanzant’ or ‘Dr. Phil’ of your family. Whoever we are, we all desire to be accepted for who we are and to be loved unconditionally.

Giving the Gift
The holidays are the perfect to show your gratitude to those you As you get older you begin to get a better understanding of what you want out of life and what it is. Your future then becomes a priority because you want what’s best for you and your family. School, friends, love, job, leisure, and financial stability begin to be topics of discussion.

There are many keys to success, but if you have at least one you’re on the right path. One of those important key factors is just being grateful for all that you have. Through your teenage years you will experience a lot of moments that will make you cry, make you smile, and maybe even make you do a mixture of both.
of Gratitude love. Take time to show them how much you are thankful for them. They’re all life lessons and they help you to appreciate the finer things in life. Not money, not clothes, or popularity status, but the little things that are sometimes forgotten to show gratitude toward. Family, friends, love for God, and the experiences that make people who they are. First thing’s first it is always a blessing to wake up every morning. No matter how hard the struggle with whatever you may face or whatever may be on your mind, you were able to wake up because you serve a purpose. While you may not know what that purpose is right now, the point is you wake up every day for a reason. Whether you are an only child or have any siblings, your family is typically the best support system you have. Yes, they may get on your nerves. Yes, they may be a little hard on you. However, at the end of the day your family loves you and showing your appreciation will only make for better relationships within your family circle. Let’s not forget the friendships and relationships you have outside of your family. Close neighbors and classmates fall under this category. Making sure those around you feel special is important. If you value these relationships and want longevity within these relationships it would
be wise to share how you feel for them on days outside of holidays and birthdays. Do you have a relationship with God? If so, when was the last time you talked to him? Prayed? God needs your love too. Give thanks for all he’s done and show him how much you appreciate him. The ways to show gratitude are unlimited. A few examples are cards, letters and notes. With these you can put your own spin on them an express in your own words how much everyone means to you. You can show God you appreciate him by going to church, attending bible study, tithing, and simply living righteously to your best ability. Live healthy, think positively, and planning your future is showing yourself how thankful you are for the life you have. Your experiences make you who are. Your family and friends are there to help guide and get you through those experiences, and God makes it all happen. Life is the most important of them all to be grateful for. Appreciate your life and all the wrenches that are thrown along your journey to adulthood. It only gets better from here.

Gratitude Journals This is a great way to tell your story from your personal point of view. A private gratitude journal provides the opportunity to express thankful feelings in an honest way. Ask a parent for a notebook to use as a journal for writing daily notes of personal gratitude. If you an ironic or humorously negative outlook, a private journal will allow you to express your gratitude in your own style, no matter how back-handed it might seem to others. In private, you'll feel free to note that you’re thankful that your history teacher didn’t call on you in class or that the boy you don’t like didn’t ask you to the dance. Dinnertime Thanks
Gratitude-On-The-GO
If your family gathers each evening to share dinner, include a brief moment of thanks before you eat. Invite your family to go around the table and each person mention one thing for which they are thankful. Write a short note of gratitude on a white or chalk board hung near the dinner table. Designate a special evening meal each week at which each family member chooses to perform a deed of gratitude. Show gratitude to your sibling by refilling their drink.
You might need a nudge or two to openly express gratitude for life’s little things. Show your gratitude for simple, everyday gifts. Mention your thankfulness for your cuddly puppy, a toasty fire in the fireplace or the beauty of a snowfall. Make your own spontaneous displays of thankfulness. Look at the world through a lens of gratitude and acknowledge your appreciation for the simple things in life: your favorite pair of jeans, a hot shower each day or your best friend’s quirky laugh.
Thank-you Notes You may not know or care about Emily Post, but it could help you learn the courtesy of writing thank-you notes. Though Post recommends a handwritten note as the proper way to thank someone for a gift, begin with emailing thanks, especially to close family and friends with whom you correspond regularly by email. A festive or funny box of cards and some glittery pens could take the hassle out of note-writing. You might not like writing notes, but handwritten thank-you notes are nice, completing them at Christmas and your birthday will help instill the habit as you grow up.

Holiday Gift Thoughtful gifts let someone know that you thought about THEM
For many of us, holiday time is a season of joy, family togetherness and renewal. We celebrate one another through all types of celebrations, festival, and activities no matter our religion or race. Many of us celebrate the holidays through giving gifts of all kinds. These can be thoughtful sentimental gifts specifically geared to the passions and likes of each person. Most of the time though, these holiday gifts are rushed, last minute trinkets that many of us grabbed off the sale rack because we have a hundred dollars that betta stretch out for seven people’s gifts…oh boy!
THIS year, instead of joining the consumer rat race at the mall as the holidays approach, maybe we can take some time and really think of what each person on our gift-giving list may REALLY like. I’m sure dad doesn’t need another bottle of cologne to clutter his dresser, and mom definitely doesn’t need another blouse hanging in her closet with the tag on it. Let us consider getting a sheet of paper, writing down things that each person likes to do, or their favorite colors, or foods, or sayings. Let us tune in to what makes that person unique. Here are some examples of gifts to give our loved ones that cost very little money, but truly come from the heart.
For Dad
For Mom
Does Dad regret not finishing carpentry school because he was pressured to be a teacher instead? Buy him a hammer, and write “Dreams are always alive,” or something like that on it. Or look on ‘You Tube’ and make him a miniature bookshelf.
Does mom have a colorful personality, but has been told that bright colors are ‘too much?’ Buy Mom a bright colorful scarf that she can wear with a lot of her outfits, and hand make a card saying something like, “The world needs to see all your beautiful colors,” or something like that.

Giving Guide personally. So take some quiet time and tune into your heart. For Friends Does your BFF Nina have a ‘thing’ for pigs (You don’t get it, but whatever)? Get her an assortment of pig figurines, or a pig purse, or a pig calendar, and make her a card that says ‘Oink, oink, oink.’ Of course she will stare at it and you will translate it. It says, ‘I love you!’
For Your Boyfriend Does your boyfriend love Sci-Fi? Okay, so the box set of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ is way out of the budget. Do some research online, and print out some information, including picture with full color, about the characters of his favorite show, or some behind the scenes stuff. You can do this for a few of his favs, and bind the pages or put them in a folder. Bam! He has his own custom made magazine, and you can write something like, “You are out of this world.”

Continued on pg. 44 making a few healthy changes at a time. Try to add new, nutritious foods to your diet and find some new activities that interest you and provide a good workout. If you monitor your food intake and eat a well-balanced diet while staying physically active you greatly reduce your risk for breast cancer. In addition to watching what you eat, you also need to watch what other substances you put into your body. Smoking and drinking alcohol significantly increases your risk of developing any cancer, including cancer of the breast. Avoiding these substances can help you to decrease your risk of cancer as well as a ton of other destructive diseases. Lastly, include your doctor in your prevention! Work in conjunction with your doctor to give yourself the best chance of detecting, treating, and beating breast cancer if it does strike. Have regular physicals and seek medical attention when you feel that something is not quite right with your body, even if breast cancer is highly unlikely. Once you reach the appropriate age of 40 (or sooner if you have a family history), begin having annual mammograms to be sure you have the best picture of your health. Remember that while you should do what you can on your own to prevent cancer, combining your habits with your doctor’s resources will give you the best picture of your personal health and the best chance to maintain it.
