The Aga Khan Trust for Culture appointed Sites International as the lead consultant to develop and design the final master plan, landscape architecture, selected architecture and site supervision/project management of Al Azhar Park. The 74-acre site is uniquely situated amidst the splendor of Old Cairo, atop a 500 year old landfill and is defined along its western boundary by the 800 year old Ayyubid wall. The design theme is derived from the contextual Islamic heritage of Old Cairo and the design intent is to provide green open space for the densely populated city. The master plan centers on a major pedestrian spine that extends north-south, linking the topographically-varied landscape elements of the Park. Furniture and lighting fixtures were custom designed by Sites International, using local artisans from a nearby quarry district. Al Azhar Park, now a Cairo landmark, was instrumental in the development of environmental awareness and a better understanding of the profession of landscape architecture in Egypt. The Park’s diverse planting material is a valuable educational resource for botany and horticulture students. Throughout the design process, Sites International was mindful of sustainable design issues. Native and adaptive trees and shrubs were used to provide shade and heat relief and the irrigation system uses raw water from the Nile. Al Azhar Park transformed one of the poorest, most populous and historically rich parts of Cairo into a sustainable open space, stimulated social and economic development and generated revenues exceeding operational and maintenance costs.

The sunken gardens are havens for secluded retreats and special events. The gardens are located along the main pedestrian park spine. The design vision is a series of gardens within a larger park context.
For the first time, residents of adjacent districts enjoy open green space. Cairo’s inner city has one of the lowest ratios of open space per inhabitant worldwide. The Park provides the surrounding underprivileged inhabitants with a niche to reclaim a viable social presence.

Sites International prepared the master plan, engineering and landscape architecture design for Dubai Park. Located at major Dubai street intersections, the Park is intended as a passive recreational space for the nearby office buildings and neighborhoods. Small pergolas provide a gateway entry to the park. Lush planting around the park perimeter provides color throughout the year while the central lawn and water features provide respite from the heat.

The Giza Governorate invited Sites International to convert part of a former airport into a 38-acre park for the densely populated district of Embaba. The design theme reflects Egypt’s major ecological zones: Nile River, Nile valley, oases and hills. The architecture of the park buildings evokes the rich and diverse aesthetics of the different ecological zones through distinct vocabularies, motifs, building typologies, materials and finishes. The Nile’s centrality to Egyptian life is represented by a stream that originates at the visitors’ entrance and winds through the entire site, connecting all the park activities. The oasis occupies a secluded area, offering a peaceful zone covered with palm groves surrounding a central water spring. Among the highlights of the park are boat rides, re-created agricultural fields and waterwheels.

Sites International was selected to prepare the schematic landscape design for the park, home to historical buildings and burial grounds for several dignitaries. The design goal is to protect and promote the existing historic Mughall Gardens and revive the site to meet modern requirements. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) and the Historic Cities Programme are involved in revitalization of the Walled City of Lahore, in Punjab, also known as the “Gardens of the Mughals” or “City of Gardens” after the rich heritage of Mughal Empire. The ‘Old City’ is located in northwestern section of Lahore with Greater Iqbal Park situated in its northern outskirts. The design plans present a site wide concept for access, options for panoramic views of the ‘Old City’, pedestrian and vehicular circulation networks, food outlets, and a new plant irrigation and drainage system. The historic gardens are enriched with additional formal and informal gardens, natural areas, and open meadows with ample shading options for visitors, to be supplied significantly by a new nursery built on the grounds. Roadscape, hardscape, water features, and seating vocabularies rely on locally manufactured materials, to blend perfectly with existing works and contribute to better community services and economic opportunities. The landscape design plan was true to the historic eminence of the location.

MIVIDA is a mixed-use urban district located in New Cairo at the eastern edge of the capital Cairo. Mivida Boxpark mall, situated around a central lake, is the first in Egypt and a novel concept to the Middle East region. It offers a mix of boutique stores and food outlets, out of shipping containers. The mall is made out of refitted shipping containers to set it apart from other spaces. The use of containers in architecture creates a real challenge in design, structure detailing, MEP requirements and concealments. Sites International dynamic design, extracting its inspiration from the containers aesthetics and industrial feel, imagined colorful containers jutting out of roofs, while others are stacked or barely showing skeletal form. Buildings incorporate a unique blend of stone, metal, composite materials, glass and possibly fabric. The complete synergy between the architecture design and MEP requirements allows tenants flexibility to apply their own personalized interior design. Light and paint create a mosaic of colors and the multi-colored scenes identify the different zones and activities. The dancing fountain, an eye catching attraction, is located at the lake center where donut boats and the fountain co-exist and are simultaneously operated. Mivida Boxpark design creates moments of exploration by developing an architectural language that pays careful attention to scale, lighting and tenants preferences making the new mall an electric new destination in Cairo’s rapidly growing shopping and entertainment centers.

Al Alamein New city, one of the fourth generation cities being built in Egypt, is located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, and is designed to be fully sustainable and functional year around. The promenade is the new city’s coastal waterfront and link to the city’s inner activities. The 7 km promenade, that may reach 14 km later, extends from Marina resort to the new Presidential Palace. It will be the first for providing public access to the seashore previously the private domain of closed tourist villages. The landscape design, for the promenade and the central gardens by the coastal road, is characterized by asymmetry and an informal plan arrangement and massing to create vast opportunities for activities. The promenade plan explores a variety of walking and open space configurations within an architectural design that varies from classic to modern. The networks of paths, for pedestrians and bicycle lovers, coupled with effective vehicular roads and links to parking areas fastened the promenade with its surroundings and capitalized on height elevation differences to maximize sea view accessibility. The design mobility ease between open and closed places allows services to range from large outlets to small stalls. The wide open green spaces with color and shape contrasts, seating corners under tree canopies and trellises, playgrounds, and dedicated shaded picnic areas proliferate for the comfort of residents, visitors and passersby making the promenade a lure of relaxation and activity.

The primary road to Sharm El-Sheikh City airport is named El Sheikh Zayed Road. The city is located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, the best known resort in the area and a popular site for international conferences and ministerial meetings. El Sheikh Zayed Road is close to 10 km long serving the area’s finest of private resorts and connecting them to the airport or for further northern travel to Nabq Managed Resource Protected Area, home to mangroves, sand dunes and wild animal life. Sites International charge is to develop the landscape concept design. Area analysis confirmed a windy, concrete and tarmac-clad environment. The road was completely fragmented constituting a gigantic surface area essentially untreated. A unifying theme of United Arab Emirates (UAE) culture intertwined with nature was selected as the welcoming mantra for travelers. It relied on supporting displays of nature and culture, each with its own unique kinds of plantations, landmark sculptures, and water jets fountains to produce eye-catching roadscape scenery. Planting palettes selections affirm their suitability to airport environment, the right tree to withstand harsh airport conditions and is inhospitable to bird populations, preserve open visual corridors for people to enjoy takeoff and landing, show splashes of color within wide green spaces, and provide open areas where people could escape the busy terminal to sit down and relax within the greenery. The landscape concept design introduced travelers to a strong first impression, a clear sense of arrival to the culture and nature of UAE.

Al-Galala Resort, a distinct tourist village, is located on the mountain promenade of the majestic city of AlGalala at an altitude of about 700 meters from the sea level. Sites International designed Al-Galala resort as a self sustained distinctive tourist village in absolute unison with its asymmetrical surroundings and offering over 80% of its residents magnificent panoramic views of the Gulf of Suez. The village design was inclusive, from initial preliminary design study to design documents and site supervision including complete infrastructure planning. The resort hosts a hotel with 210 rooms and suites, 360 chalets, 52 townhouses, health club, specialized restaurants at premium locations, several swimming pools, children’s playground, and sport areas set within interconnected network of roads and walkways with ample parking spaces and with direct links to the promenade. The vast desert linear lines and the plateau’s stepped terraces were the design inspiration. An elegant structure facing the Gulf is the hotel spread linearly over two terraces with buildings’ roofs and terrace flat tops used for gardens and pools while waterfalls tie the plateau’s progressions. The rest of the resort, chalets and townhouses, possess vantage points of sea views, green terraces, oasis enclaves, or pure desert environment. The resort design lives cohesively with its natural environment with every line mimicking the angles of the desert landscape and colors as well as Gulf of Suez blue tones. A true simplicity in nature and design, letting the desert landscape take the helm.

Type : Hotels/Resorts
The Marriott Hotel is located on an island in the heart of downtown Cairo by the river Nile and within walking distance to many of the city’s main historical attractions. Marriott Hotel is surrounded by six acres of lush gardens and is home to a historic neoclassical style palace built in 1869 as a guest residence for the Suez Canal inauguration celebrations. It played host to many European monarchs most notable is Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III. Since it transitioned into a hotel and with numerous expansions witnessed over time, the cohesiveness, centrality and beauty of its major assets were overshadowed. Sites International lead the effort to enhance and restore the glamour of the open spaces around it to augment its architectural assets and spotlight the splendor and royal sense of this historical site. The landscape design, from concept to construction document, aimed to conserve and enhance all the architectural and landscape assets, including preserving historical fountains, specimen trees, plants and arcades, upgrading outlets that will privilege the glamour of the place, advancing space quality through open views to outstanding features, providing refined pavement materials and detailing, and using lighting fixtures to match the architectural theme. These improvements were furthered by developing nice manicured green buffers around the hotel and blending all landscape elements with the architecture characteristics that include both the modern and neoclassical style.

Sites International, working closely with multiple architectural firms, developed a master plan and landscape design for the 260-acre New Cairo campus of this notable and historic university. Sites International played a key role in technical site coordination / site supervision. The design vision for the site is a tightly-knit learning environment that encompasses indoor and outdoor spaces. The central spine serves as the backbone of the campus, while geometrically-configured architectural features in the form of gateways, plazas and courtyards, subtly introduce new spaces along the course of the spine. Sustainability was central to all facets of the project. Every landscape decision was made with a limited irrigation water budget in mind. Sites International created a catalogue of planting material used in their design for future use by the community and in the classroom. The landscape as a whole is an environmental showcase for the best of things Egyptian in an institution that uniquely brings together what is American and Egyptian.

NYUAD is a comprehensive liberal arts campus in Abu Dhabi. Sites International prepared the landscape master plan and design guidelines with the intent of creating an oasis-like haven for students and staff. The highly urbanized campus and extensive land coverage by buildings posed a real landscape design challenge. Almost all landscaping is built on roofs, including parking garages, academic buildings and student / staff housing. Extensive studies were conducted to respond to the extremely hot-humid climate of Abu Dhabi. Native and adaptive plant species were selected. Hardscape materials with minimum heat gain were specified. The design provides sheltered and shaded areas for students’ outdoor use. Roof gardens play both an aesthetic role and minimize heat gain through the roofs of buildings.

The New Giza University is located at Cairo-Alexandria roadway in New Giza, one of Cairo’s new satellite cities in the City of 6th October. The new city includes a variety of residential buildings, a resort hotel, hospital, and dense cultural, leisure, office and shopping facilities for local residents and visitors alike. The University was conceived as part of the national trend to promote green practices and produce a sustainable fully viable learning environment, rigorous and rich with opportunities for reflection, discussion and mediation. The revised master plan and landscape for the first phase proposes a series of quads, courtyards, plazas, and tree lined promenades that provide a strong pedestrian framework to the campus while introducing a more sustainable landscape palette. The design capitalizes on the dramatic landform of the former quarry site to create distinct character for each campus area. The amphitheatre is built on a high ridge while the VIP entrance, on leveled area, is defined by parallel double rows of palm trees along a linear water feature starting with a water jet and ending in a fountain surrounded by large flowering trees. Student main entrance is rich with shading trees along the playing fields whereas the pedestrian paths across campus celebrate connectivity and serendipitous interactions. The design plan establishes a firm and adaptable attitude to sustainability to support resiliency for years to come. Sites International will be managing the university campus site supervision to ensure the designs turn to reality.

Marassi is located along the Mediterranean North Coast of El Alamein and overlooks the turquoise waters of Sidi Abdel Rahman Bay, one of the most beautiful bays on the North Coast. The project aims to develop a world–class, multi–season resort community targeted towards national and international clientele and built in the architectural styles of the Mediterranean against a backdrop of pristine beaches, lush greenery and meandering waterways and lagoons. Sites International provided detailed landscape architecture design and master planning with sustainability in mind. Methods used include rain-water capture and its on-site use, heavy employment of native species, and low–toxicity maintenance. This was cemented by a newly revised overall irrigation and fertilization system for the resort as well as for the Golf course. The development is pedestrian oriented and is comprised of building clusters that create distinct regions or villages. Sites International work scope covered detailed landscape architecture for the villages with great attention given to the finer details of each to enhance the character of outdoor living and amplify the style difference between them. Village landscape design amplifies its relationship to Mediterranean Sea and to the villages’ own parks, plazas, and lagoon walkways. The design plan includes transitional levels and spaces, a rich network of alleyways, pools, and playgrounds. Most spectacular is the major lagoon’s 3 km long promenade that is part of an intricate network of waterways serving the residential areas. The network includes various edge treatments for watercraft stops, access to adjacent areas, and swimming locations. The promenade has pedestrian and bike paths traveling the entire length with special paving accentuating transitional areas and with strategically placed screening treatments to maximize water views while protecting adjacent villas privacy. Recently Sites International was contracted to update the primary Golf course irrigation system to amplify water conservation and better serve the site. The new City of Galala will be located on the highest mount plateau in the Red Sea area between Ain Sokhna and Zafarana. The plateau sits over 650 meters above sea level at its highest elevation. The new city is one of the government’s national efforts to develop the vast and empty eastern desert to solve Cairo’s population congestion and create work and living opportunities for the youth as well as generating investment opportunities. City of Galala, located on 17000 acres on top of the highest mount plateau in the area across the Gulf of Suez, centers on a balanced approach towards development and preservation of the surrounding pristine environment. The master plan, including detailed master planning, focus on developing a sustainable, dynamic, mixed use area based on a framework of land use, public land transportation and road systems recently constructed by the governorate, and public spaces that integrates the existing ecological conditions. The first phase released, out of three, covers an area of 2050 acres consisting of various activities. It includes residential areas with the most desired moderately price units, commercial, touristic villages, cultural, medical, educational, and religious. All these entities are directly connected to the project’s public arena where the development’s major mosque, positioned at the project’s highest point, and convention center are located. Site International is responsible for the entire internal infrastructure including sewage and irrigation treatment plants, identifying locations for massive size water tanks, and preparations for the use of solar lighting in public spaces. Most breathtaking will be the design for the 6 kilometer walkway by the edge of the plateau, with a steep drop of 200 meters. The promenade will host visitors’ vantage points of the Gulf, a bike track, a collection of café’s, restaurants, pedestrian paths, and shaded seating areas in addition to creating captivating vistas for the surrounding residential and tourist villages. A cable cart is planned to take advantage of the steep elevation and panoramic views and to create a quick access between the city and shore line communities. All will be set in an atmosphere of sand, sun and fun. Architectural design will follow the character consistent with the distinctive coastal mountain nature, building materials will be from the Red Sea area quarries, and landscape planting will be true to the sustainable environment by using indigenous and semi indigenous palettes of plants, trees, and ground cover using treated waters and an efficient water conservation irrigation system to ensure the protection of the surrounding environment with the minimal of changes.

Running parallel to the residential area and around the shopping mall is the promenade with comfortable pedestrian amenities and ample shading. The site possesses breath-taking views of green farmlands contrasted with amber desert and granite rocks while the spectacular Nile can be seen from elevations reaching 20 meters at the residential and commercial areas. The Nile Park, a planting sustainability model, is a first in Aswan governorate in terms of size, 138 acres with a 6 km length, marked beauty that offers a Marina as the city’s primary gateway, and unhindered public river access for local residents. The landscape environmental design strategy contrasts the area’s natural sand elements with conscious greenery. A safeguarded desert region sits between two flanks of green havens, the residential area above and the Nile Park below. The inland desert is home to historic natural stone boulders engraved with ancient Pharaonic scripts. Networks of pedestrian walkways and bicycle trails interconnect the two sides crossing the resident desert dotted with spots of shade. The project houses Sir Magdy Yacoub medical complex, a milestone of free healthcare for low-income citizens, and sponsors other charitable endeavors. The cultural facilities, located by the Nile, include a museum, open air theatre and samples of Nubian style tourist villages servicing both local residents and tourist alike. The boulevard, at the northern border of the development, hosts pedestrian walkways, bike trails and playgrounds. Most significantly a new tram service will connect the project’s east to west areas to enhance visitor’s traffic, expand retail and housing investment opportunities, and create new work opportunities for local residents. Authenticity is a driving force behind Sites International approach to design generating a perfect union between the new built milieu and this historic city’s culture, heritage and environment.

This mixed use project enjoys a strategic location, corner of Cairo-Suez Road and a newly constructed alAmal Road leading to the new administrative capital. The development aims to create a well-integrated and harmonious urban environment offering diverse types of residential units, up to 36,000, with a vast spectrum of retail, education, medical, sports, entertainment and religious facilities. Sites International was targeted to work on several zones of the project. For the development at large, the task is to design a modified land use master plan to turn the land loss due to building new roads to an advantage while preserving the original intent of less than 30% foot print. The plan capitalized on the newly created road intersections and developed prime commercial areas along the two axis, al-Amal and Cairo-Suez Roads. For the Sales Center the charge is to prepare concept architectural design for an iconic landmark building to generate traffic and increase sale potentials. The residential area called for landscape master planning, from concept to detail, obtaining the ministerial decree from the New Urban Community Authority (NUCA), and coordinating all other disciplines for the assigned parcels that represent 25% of the total residential area to date. The design challenge was how to incorporate an innovative dwelling design, the “S” villa buildings. Each villa building holds two vertical units each with its own private street entrance. The first villa entrance is set at zero level while the second unit’s private entrance is set at 5 meters elevation but at the rear street, economy in space with privacy and exclusivity. The community’s landscape design is exemplar in accommodating the architectural distinctiveness while merging contemporary style with regional identity. At the heart of each parcel is a generously scaled urban park with a different theme or feel assigned to each one. The crisp and clean design incorporates local and indigenous materials to provide green open spaces for residents and visitors alike. The central axis integrates various elements of hardscape, softscape and water features, whereas the green axis weaves through the neighborhoods to blend together the different spaces and providing a softened backdrop for various event spaces. The project is a fulfillment of luxury and a well designed visual synchronization.

City Gate is a mixed use community of approximately 8.5 million m2 located about 40 kilometers east of downtown Cairo along the eastern boundary of New Cairo City. Sites International is commissioned to design the landscape, from concept to tender documents, for two primary villa districts, one apartment buildings cluster, and the Civic Park all released in the first phase of the development. The difficult site topography of the first two districts required major landscape design modifications, with particular attention to specialty designs as site enabling and setting out packages as well as security systems, to enhance dramatically the number of villas with access views of the golf course and the Civic Park. The Civic Park features a large water pond located within gardens and plaza spaces creating a ceremonial and signature arrival into the community. Each neighborhood displays multiple pocket parks with their streets wrapped in shade trees, vividly colored groundcover, flowering shrubs, seating areas, playgrounds, open turf for informal play areas all crisscrossed with pedestrian paths and crossings creating a pedestrian haven. Networks of paths provide various accessibility loops to the Civic Park, open space systems, or to the adjacent community centers. Most powerful will be the landscape and streetscape design of ‘City Gate Avenue’ where model villas are displayed. Sites International is engaged for designing the architecture, concept to tender documents, for the three districts community centers that include both retail and service units and for their ancillary buildings. The landscape and architecture plans for the project establishes a firm and adaptable attitude to sustainability at all levels.

Eastown is a contemporary mixed-use development in the heart of New Cairo. It is a planned city intended to provide fully sufficient housing opportunities for all income levels with an expected target residential population of 11,000. Eastown offers 2650 residential units with a sizable commercial center, office space, recreational areas, central points for gathering, and children playgrounds. The landscape design challenge is to unify the fragmented open spaces of the widely spread residential areas that occupies 80% of the development. The inherited condition had a strong unwelcoming arid feeling due to poor planting materials, absence of shade for pedestrians and in parking areas, and lack of buffer zones or a promenade. The new landscape design began with a green winding spine weaving through the area offering varied options of palm sections, parks large and small, an artificial lake, and a variety of water features with ample shading and seating opportunities along the different paths. The network of parks and open spaces serve as the connective tissue for residential areas with water features deflecting the solar heat and decreasing the overall temperature. The planting palette is rich in color and variety. The hardscape materials of granite pavers, natural stone and cladding, and bright colored rubber for the children playground mark each area with distinction. Custom made site furniture, lighting, and signage added the final touch in creating a singular character for the development.

The project, part of Cairo’s governorate framework of an integrated development for the general area, is located Southeast of Cairo on the Mokattam sandy hills. The master plan outlined urban design alternatives, prepared analysis of real estate potentials, and detailed architectural plan that offers multiple housing options for the project’s challenging terrain of varying and significant inclinations. These challenges were most pronounced at the perimeter, with considerable steep edges, and in access to and from the location. The plan visually capitalized on these land variations, in its architectural design for housing and commercial services, in the distribution of green open spaces within and around the community, and in the design of vehicular networks to enhance accessibility and to jointly create an identifiable self-sufficient place with a unique life style.

The Nubian Museum, recipient of the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, is a true illustration of landscape architecture that is sensitive to site topography and context. In the late 1980s, UNESCO sponsored the establishment of a museum to display the history, culture and heritage of the Nubian people. The museum rests on a unique hilltop site overlooking the Nile River city of Aswan. Sites International’s design concept centers on creating several themed outdoor display areas and includes a long stream representing the Nile River as it flows through Egypt. The stream symbolically starts in the topographically rough landscape of ‘Upper Egypt’, descends through several cataract-style waterfalls and ends in the ‘Lower Egypt Valley’ with palm trees and greens of the Delta. The 43,000 m2 site contains numerous indigenous plants spread over natural rocks. An amphitheater is carved out of the steep adjacent slopes. A small Nubian village street brings Nubian culture and daily activities to life.

Urban Design of Historical Precinct of Addiriyah Location

Area : 75-acre Discipline/Services
: Landscape Architecture.
Type : Historical.
Addiriyah (Diriyah) is the historical home of the Saudi State and it was the state’s first capital in the mid 18th century. The area lay abandoned until 2000 when the Addiriyah Development Program set up a comprehensive metropolitan development program to highlight its historic role and turn it into a tourist and cultural center at the national level. The program aims to adapt the site to modern requirements while preserving and reconstructing its historical buildings and monuments, cognizant of the site’s historical, cultural, architectural and environmental features. Addiriyah is home to Turaif Neighborhood, registered in UNESCO World Heritage List. Sites International, with other international consultants, worked on a schematic landscape master plan for open spaces surrounding the city’s residential communities, the adjacent areas to the valley’s edge, and roads leading to Turaif Neighborhood. The design created a fully integrated project, utilizing the site’s natural gifts of inclinations, slopes, the valley’s topography and coupled it with streetscape and furniture vocabularies most fitting to this historic location heritage. The result is a wonderful union of built and natural environment.

The mosque is located in Turaif Neighborhood considered one of the most important landmarks in historic Addiriyah, 22 km from the Kingdom’s capital Riyadh. It is home to important archeological buildings, palaces and historical monuments. In 2010, Turaif Neighborhood was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The landscape design aims is to integrate the historical mosque within its natural environment. The project is comprised of mosque and plaza. The plaza design offers a grandeur entrance to the mosque, a combination of magnificent marble intercepted with palms as punctuations for prayer distribution, a solemn vision of individuals in prayer postures. Planting and hardscape are used to differentiate and identify areas. Worshipers, arriving on foot or by car, walk through geometrical hardscape design in earthy rainbow colors, while those heading toward the historical district view gravel paved areas filled with fragrant citrus trees. A sunken garden is situated close to pedestrian walkways, an area for gatherings and relaxation. Planting palettes selection is based on their adaption to arid environment and support of low water consumption. In all, visitors are presented with an impressive aesthetic locale.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Cultural Center is located in Garden City, a well planned and leafy district designed in early 1900 by Jose Lamba whose vision was to create a layout drawn by using a compass rather than straight lines. The Center is a historical site designed by one of Europe’s famous architects. Many of the country’s elite, including royal family members, resided in this new upper class khedivial neighbourhood where they chose famous European architects the like of Fritz Heftiand, Emil Vogt, Swiss architects, and Antonio Lasciac, Italian architect of Slovene descent, to design their palaces. The Cultural Center is attributed to be one of Lasciac’s work inspired by Italian villas of the Renaissance era and incorporating characteristics and details of neo-classical architecture. Sites International landscape design enhanced and restored the glamour of open spaces to spotlight the splendour and royal sense of the historical palace and form a harmonious relation-ship between the building and the new open spaces surrounding it.
