TADAO ANDO IS A JAPANESE SELF-TAUGHT ARCHITECT WHOSE APPROCH TO ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE WAS CATEGORIZED BY ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIAN FRANCESCO DAL CO AS ‘CRITICAL REGIONALISM’ HE WAS RAISED IN JAPAN WHERE THE RELIGION AND STYLE OF LIFE STRONGLY INFLUNCED HIS ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. HIS ARCHITECTURE STYLE IS SAID TO CREATE A ‘HAIKU’ EFFECT, EMPHASIZING NOTHINGNESS AND EMPTY SPACE TO REPRESRENT THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY.

FORTY-FEET-HIGH TRANSPERENT WALLS OF GLASS FRAMED IN METAL SURROUND THE CONTRETE ENVELOPE, PROVIDING MAGNIFICENT PUBLIC CIRCULAR AREAS FROM WHOCH TO VIEW THE SURROUNDING BUILIDNG, THE LARGE REFLECTING POND, OUTDOOR SCULPTURE , AND THE LANDSCAPED GROUNDS.

JENJAROM, A VILLAGE LOCATED IN SELANGOR, MALAYSIA ABOUT 55KM WEST FROM KUALA LUMPUR IN THE KUALA LANGA
JENJAROM HAS A SIGNIFICANT CHINESE (HOKKIEN) POPULATION, AND THE VILLAGE IS THE SITE OF THE DONG ZEN FO GUA TEMPLE AND INSTITUTE IN SUNGAI JAROM. THOUGH THIS IS PREDOMINANTLY FOR THE CHINESE BUDDIST POPULATION, COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM THE TOURISM IT ATTRACTS: THERE WERE ABOUT A QUARTER OF A MILLION VISITORS IN 2004.
JENJAROM WAS ONE OF THE NEW VILLAGES, SET UP IN THE 1950’S DURING THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY TO SEGREGATE THE RURAL CHINESE VILLAGERS FROM THE COMMUNIST INSURGENTS WITHIN MALAYSIA UNDER THE BRIGGS PLAN. THIS AIMED TO CUT OFF THE SUPPLIES TO THE INSURGENTS.

JENJAROM NEW VILLAGE HAD GONE THROUGH 3 DIFICULTY TIME, WHICH IS 1. SEGREGAGTION PERIOD. 2. FLOOD. 3. ECOMOMY CRISIS PHASE 1 OF JENJAROM NEW VILLAGE WAS THE ORIGINAL PLACE WHERE BRIGGS ARRANGE CHINESE AROUND THE AREA TO MOVE TO. UNTIL THERE WERE A SRIOUS FLOOD, VILLAGERS STARTS MOVING TO THE NORTH WEST DIRECTION. AND THERE FOR THE PHASE 2 OF JENJAROM NEWVILLAGE WAS DEVELOPED. THIS ALSO CAUSE A GAP IN ECONOMY DIFFERENT OF THESE TWO PART OF JENJAROM NEW VILLAGE.

FORM AND SHAPE OFF THE MUSEUM IS DESIGN BASE ON THE ARCHITECTURE VERNACULAR STUDY OF THE SITE. CONTINUEOUS WALL WITH LOTS OPENING WERE DESIGNED FACING THE SOUTH-WEST AND EAST-WEST DIRECTION, WHERE MOST OF THE WIND COME FROM.

FIRST FLOOR IS DESIGNED TO BE LIFTED UP WITH SOLID TIMBER WALL, TO REFLECT THE WINDS COME FROM EAST DIRECTION TO THE CAFE AREA, TO CREATE BETTER NATUIRAL VENTILATION. .

FASHION DURING 1940S’ TO 1960S’. BRIGGS, OFFICER, VILLAGERS ETC. VALUABLE FASHION HANGS ON WALL, AND OTHERS WILL BE OPEN FOR PUBLIC TO TRY.
OPEN AIR GALLERY. INSTALLATION ART WOULD BE RACOMENTED. HAS TO BE WATER PROOF AND HAVE SELF SUPPORT STRUCTURE.

DURING THE EMERGENCY PERIOD, CHINESE WERE FORCED TO MOVE TO THE NEW VILLAGE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THEY BEING TOLD. THEY WERE FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOME WHERE THERE CREATE AND ‘STORE’ THEIR MEMORIES, AND MOVE TO A PLAY WHERE IS TATALLY MEAN EMPTY FOR THEM. THEREFORE THE CENTER PART OF THE MUSUEM IS DESIGN TO BE EMPTY.
HOWEVER, AFTER THEY HAVE MOVE IN TO THE NEW VILLAGE, THEY BUILT THEIR OWN HOUSE BY THEIR HANDS, AND MEMORY CREATED SINCE THAT MOMENT. THEREFORE, A TREE IS PLANTED AT THE CENTER OF THE MESEUM ONCE THE CONSTRUCTION HAS DONE, WHEN TIME PASS, TREE GROW. THIS REPRESENTING THE ‘GROW’ OF THE NEW MEMORY ONCE VILLAGERS MOVED TO THE NEW VILLAGE.

THIS SECTION IS DESIGNED BASE ON THE HISTORY OF NEW VILLAGE JENJAROM. DIFFERENT CEILING HEIGHT FROM GALLERY 1 TO GELLERY 3 REPRESNTING EACH OF THE SUFFERING PERIOD OF THE VILLAGERS. VILLAGES GONE THROUGH DURING 1970’S.

GALLERY 2-WHILE MOVING TOWARDS TO THIS AREA, WALKING UP TO THE STAIRS RESULTING THE CEILING HEIGHT EVEN LOWER AT THE BEGINNING. BUT WHEN KEEPS MOVING TO THE FRONT THE CEILING HEIGHT BECOME HIGHER AND HIGHER. REPRESNTING AFTER THE SEGREGATION, VILLAGERS THOUGH THAT THEY ARE REALEAS FROM THE TORTURE, BUT FLOOD COME AND DESTROYE WHAT THEY HAVE. HOWEVER, DAYS GET BETTER AFTER THEY MOVE TO PHASE 2 OF THE NEW VILLAGE. GALLERY 3-CEILING HEIGHT WERE DESIGNED AS THE SAME REASON AS GALLERY 2, BUT JUST THE DIFFICULTY ERA HERE WAS THE ECONOMY CRISIS THE VILLAGES GONE THROUGH DURING 1970’S.

WINDS COME FROM EAST DIRECTION WILL REFLECTED TO THE CAFE AREA TO PROVIDE A BETTER VENTILATION.

BUTTERFLY ROOF IS USED FOR THE MUSEUM DUE TO THE CHINESE CULTURER, WATER REPRESENTING PROSPERITY, AND BUTTERFLY ROOF CAN GATHER THE WATER TO THE CENTER OF THE BUILIDING, WHICH MEAN GATHER THE MONEY.

THE FORM AND SHAPE OF THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO BE MORE MODERN, IN ORDER TO MAKE IT LOOKS OUT OF THE ORDINARY THAN THE OTHER BUILDINGS IN NEW VILLAGE JENJAROM. THIS MAKE THE BUILDING TO BE MORE EYE CATCHING, BUT NOT OUT OF TUNE WITH THE SITE DUE TO THE MATERIAL USED ARE MOSTLY TIMBER.
