Abstract

As what we are familiar, cities always grow horizontally. When the city footprint get bigger and bigger thorough out the time, the resources usage intensity get higher and higher too, due to the longer travelling distance of people, of logistic, and the larger utility network. That is the reason many study shows vertical city hold the key to solve the problem of urban expansion, and claim that it will be much sustainable urban scheme. However, the idea of vertical city detach people from the ground, which is the biggest challenge of making it a humane living environment. Therefore, the main exploration of the thesis will be about. duplicating ground, and inject grounded living even in vertical city.

In short, the vision of a vertical city is an entire human habitat contained in a massive skyscraper. Change the norm of a city development from horizontal from horizontal to vertical, rather than destroying forests and swamps for the human need. Vertical city, is what to believe, a much more efficient way of creating a city. As we can have more flexibility on green, can have a more efficient commute system, efficient waste management system, efficient utility distribution system, and most importantly we can get more green space at the ground level.

• Current City Deveopment Technology and medical advances enable people to live longer, healthier lives. However, this brings up problemsof overpopulation. As the population increases, so does the need for living space. the increase of homes and neighborhoods often results in the destruction of forests and other habitats.

According to Malaysia Statistic Department, the core & suburban population has shown a drastical increase from the year of 1950 to 2010. and its still increasing today. And Whats is happening today is that, the core of kulua lumpur has nearly come to a saturation point, where people cannot afford anymore for the expensive rental in it, and that, lead to the expansion of the suburbs. And because of that, City which were initially satellite city of KL has become a independent City instead, for example, petalingjaya, subangjaya, and ampang jaya.

Therefore, if the we are sticking to the conventional urban development trend, in not more than few of decades, Kuala Lumpur will be come another Megacity in the world. Which according to the cambridge dictionary definition: A very large city, especially one with more than 10 million people living in it Tokyo, Japan, 1945 and 2013 40,400,000 pop

8

SKYLANTIS 2121

Shanghai, 1990-2014 33,600,000 pop

Paris, France, 1900-2012 11,400,000 pop

• But what is so bad about mega city?

Humanity Livability

People - Street seperation People that is detached from street life, thus lose contact with ground floor meaningful event

Urban sprawl longer transport distances to work, high car dependence, inadequate facilities and higher per-person infrastructure costs

Encapsulated world reduce the number of chance encounters that happen, which are crucial to the liveliness of a city and to creating social capital.

Traffic congestion longer trip times, increased pollution, and increased vehicular queueing

Air pollution: cardiovascular disease problems with smog, a type of air pollution derived from vehicle emissions from internal combustion engines and industrial fumes

Lack of sense of belonging When come accross with lack of interaction with the people around your neighbourhood, people intent to feel being forgotter / left out

Mental health, Depressive Being surrounded by tall buildings produces a “substantial” negative impact on mood, as it produce oppressiveness

Energy and material resources efficiency of electricity consumption, heating and industrial fuel use, ground transportation energy use, water consumption, waste generation etc

• Horizontal City VS Vertical City?

? Kuala Lumpur Land Use Plan 2020

What is Vertical city actually? The left is the Zonning of Klang Valley. Intrepretation is made base on it in a more schematically way. If a city is a circle, the centre would be the central business district, which is our KL downtown, then whats surrounding it are mostly instituition and Industrial, then

follow by the residential, recreational & facilities, and lastly the undevelope land. So the idea of vertical city is that, we create all this vertically, instead of “horizontally”. But what’s is the more feasible urban zonning, if the city would have to build vertically, will be the thesis exploration here.

Besides than the composition of the vertical urban zonning, there are still several important element that cannot be ignore which make up a complete city. Such as infrasture, transportation and utility network.

• Biggest Challenges Vertical City There are a lot of challenges we would have to take into consideration when it comes to a topic of vertical city. Wind

Oxygen

Pressure

Transportation

Supply

Discharge

Fire Escape

Structural

For example such as the wind, the oxygen level, the pressure level, the transportation, the supplies of resources and the discharge of waste, the fire escape, the food production, the structure, so on and so fort.

But all those are just technical problem, and technically, with the fast growing of technology today, we can say that, nearly all the challenges that stated on the above are possible to be resolved in the future. However, there is one resources, by technology alone, can never resolve, which is the ground. The idea of vertical city detach people from the ground, and that is the biggest challenge of making it a humane living environment SKYLANTIS 2121

• History

1880

1900 In the old map of Kuala Lumpur (1880's) , there is a small village called Pudu Village, which is the origin of the place name Pudu in Malay. "Ban Shan Ba" commonly used by local Chinese, when KL was developed in the early years, which mean “semi-jungle”.

1950

Petaling Street pupulation is saturated, so then the British Goverment moved the residents out from it and encourage citizens to move to Pudu. They widen the road and opend a railway there at the same time. Hence, Pudu gradually became another lively area besides Petaling Street, Central Market and Chow Kit Market

1990

NOW After the Second World War, many undeveloped areas and agricultural land were converted for commercial development. Many shophouses and movie theaters gradually opened one after anothe. The booming business activities attracted a large number of Chinese young people from other states in Malaysia who came to Kuala Lumpur. At that time, there were more than 1,000 wooden houses around and a large population. 14

SKYLANTIS 2121

However, since the 1990s, many residents have gradually moved to Cheras and Ampang once they have the affordability. For those who yet affordable, are mostly arranged to live in the PPR by the goverment at the time. Many of the upper floors of shophouses have been leased by foreign workers. Forming Kuala Lumpur’s one of the major gathering places for foreign workers. At present, the Pudu is occupied by mostly printing, hardware, tailoring and catering industry

• Surrounding Pudu is a forgotten urban piece where just next to the Kuala Lumpur City Center, and surrounded by numorous vibrant, and hispter development

Transit Station KL & Pudu Sental

To create a vertical city, good accessibility is a very important, as the density will be raised drastically here. Therefore, to not to add extra burden to existing infrastructure, the strategy at the moment is transforming the whole pudu to be a carfree town. Therefore, the selected site is located at the red square in between the 3 red circle points. And what will be happening at these red circles are that, they will act like a gateway, where to stop all the vehicles from entering pudu. So if people from the other town would like to entre pudu, they will need to stop their car here and either walk, cycling or take underground express into the town.

Transit Station Propose Future Vertical City Point

For those who rely on transport (assume that the rail system today can last for 100 years) its not something to be worry too, as we have many station nearby. And of course, Pudu is not the only pazel that is left out at the moment. therefore, the overall plan is actually to slowly inject vertical city in each of the running down urban piece, making vertical city new trend of redevelopment. So that we can return as much as land back to our mother nature possible. SKYLANTIS 2121

•The Ownership There are always these four main components which make up a typical highrise building. They are:1. The Structure 2. The Space 3. The Lift 4. The M&E system. As it is a “building”, therefore, all of them except for the space, are belongs to nobody. However, when it come to a vertical city instead, it would not be the same story anymore. To allow for a more organic growth for the vertical city, it shouldnt be just a one stop project. Therefore the idea is to slpit all of the component to different individual ownership from different party. so, by that, we can get more parties to involve and invest in this development.

1. The Frame: Own by the goverment. so, the frame here, is actually replacing the so call vacant land in the horizontal city. We create the vacant module instead, in the vertical city. 2. 3. The Mover: Which we so call elevator. also own by the investor, like rapid kl / plus highway, however the elevator here will no longer a free commuting system. it will act like excatly how the rail transport happen on the ground today. people pay and get the ride. and of course the size of it will be much bigger. i believe. 4. The Utility: Own and manage by the authorised servies provider.

•The Layout

1 The Utility 2 The Frame 3The Mover 4 The Filling 5The Volume Step 1 - The Utility: It will not gonna be a good idea, if the utility system here is design as what we are having in today’s high rise.. getting the supply from somewhere else far from the site, and pump all the way to the top most floor of the building. “Vertical city” is gonna be a “city”, it will be having a super high demand over there, and therefore, it is more strategic to design the vertical city to be an autonomous. Hence, the utility system is design to be seperated. Each of the parcel will gonna have their own utility system. So that it can works more efficiently.

Step 2 - The Frame: The structure is designed to be a core centric supporting sturtural. So that we can allow more posibility and flexibility on the plug in development. Step 3 - The Mover: The mover here will be centralized, and only gonna be seding pasenger to the entrance of their desire parcel. Step 4 - The Filling: To achive maximum sunlight, and fully utilize the air space above, the filling is move outwards, meaning, cantiliver development ah. Step 5: Lastly, high up the volume.

•The Metaphor Atlantis is one of the inspiration in shaping the overall design, as the fiction background of Atlantis is similar with the thesis scenario, which a era with high technology advancement. Besides that, symbol that metaphor infinity / endless such as “∞” and “o” are also the elements that uses during the progress while shaping the design.

The current design scheme is designing it at a height of 1500m, which able to fit 15,000 population (current Pudu Population). However, at Kuala Lumpur where is above sea level of 66 meters, the maximum height it can goes is know as 2434 meters.

Contrary to popular opinion, the land use and districbution are not primarily formed by the actions of local bodies, politicians or town planners, but rather it is the aggregate activity of property developers that determine the form a city. Multiple, and often conflicting factors influence developers decisions.

The Mover in Skylantis is inspired by The Hyperloop - a new form of ground transport currently in development by a number of companies, It could see passengers travelling at over 700 miles an hour in floating pod which races along inside giant low-pressure tubes, either above or below ground. There are two big differences between Hyperloop and traditional rail. Firstly, the pods carrying passengers travel through tubes or tunnels from which most of the air has been removed to reduce friction. This should allow the pods to travel at up to 750 miles per hour.

The Mover Private Sector

Secondly, rather than using wheels like a train or car, the pods are designed to float on air skis, using the same basic idea as an air hockey table, or use magnetic levitation to reduce friction.

Water

Gas produced by decaying human feces is a potentially major source of energy, providing electricity for millions of homes while improving sanitary conditions in developing countries, says a UN report.

Singapore has developed a new technique for recycling wastewater: a four-stage treatment process (conventional treatment, micro-filtration, reverse osmosis and UV treatment), branded NEWater. This water is drinkable, and is distributed to the city’s drinking water reservoirs, but most of it is utilised in industry.

Future Food

Future Industry

invention of future meat is believe to the the future food trend. The so-called future meat is actually plant-base-meat, which use plant proteins instead of animal protein to simulate the taste of meat. The “wave” of plant-based meat products that has set of the world, it is not only a simple vegetarian diet, but also a food revolution

3D Printing allow vertical city to be a “nettfree” city, by controlling all objects to be made by recycable material. This will probably change the entire industrial model, and enable manufacturing to produce less waste. People may just print everything they need in the home. We can even achieve circular economy in this event.
