WHAT TO EXPECT AS A SALUKI. New Student Orientation

Orientation schedules will vary by program. Make sure you stay in contact with program for details. Be sure to be on the lookout for your invitation to the Graduate School Welcome Party. This event will introduce you to Graduate School Staff and new graduate students. Come have lunch, socialize and get answers to any questions you may have. You’ll also find details about day-to-day student life and academic support including: • Academic resources • Student services • Registered Student Organizations (RSO’s) International students are required to attend orientation sessions through the Center for International Education. All international students are required to report to campus a week before classes start in order to participate. Orientation prepares new students for many aspects of life in the United States, in Carbondale and at SIU. During orientation week, we provide valuable information including required immunizations, health insurance, tips for adjusting to your new cultural and academic environments, opening a bank account, U.S. Income Taxes, housing and many other issues. In addition, we have planned events that will provide you with the opportunity to have fun, get familiar with your new environment and make new friends.

SALUKI STARTUP is extended orientation

for new students. It takes place in the fall before classes start. The Downtown Scavenger Hunt helps you get to know the Carbondale community. The Late Night Bash and the Watermelon Fest introduce you to fellow Salukis. Saluki Success Days offer workshops on all kinds of college life issues. Log on to salukinet.siu.edu with your Network ID and complete your enrollment. You’ll be able to view your registration status, check your class schedule and track your financial aid award status online. To speak with a helpful admissions representative, call 618-536-4405.


Housing essentials:

What you need to know Graduate students are not required to live in on-campus housing but may do so if they wish. If you choose to live off campus it is highly recommended you DO NOT sign a lease (contract) prior to arriving in Carbondale and viewing the property in person. Make sure you review the renter information available at studentlegal.siu.edu/renterinformation. If you need help understanding your lease please contact Student Legal Assistance prior to signing at 618-536-6677 or sladesk@siu.edu.

How to contract for a residence hall. You can complete your University Housing contract at housing.siu.edu with a prepayment. • Students entering SIU in the fall 2019 semester: Contracts are available online beginning Dec. 1, 2018. The earlier you contract, the earlier you can select your room in the summer. • Students entering SIU in the spring or summer 2020 semesters: View more information, including contract dates, online.

Dining. The Saluki Anytime Dining Plan is

included with the residence hall contract. Students have unlimited access to dining halls any time they are open. Our dining halls offer home-style cooking, vegan and vegetarian entrĂŠes, soup and salad bars, pasta, desserts and items cooked to order. Our Nutrition Team works individually with students to accommodate most dietary needs. Contact us at 618-453-2301 to speak to a registered dietitian. Dining plans are available for commuters and off-campus residents as well.


Graduate students.

Live in on-campus apartments, traditional residence halls or off campus. For on-campus housing information, visit housing to take a virtual tour and discover the many features and amenities designed to suit your every need. On-Campus Apartments • Wall & Grand Apartments: This allinclusive and conveniently located complex offers furnished apartments, a beautiful courtyard and 24-hour staffing. (Eligibility: SIU sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students of any age, or freshmen age 21 or older.) • Evergreen Terrace Apartments: Enjoy the scenic southwest campus location overlooking Evergreen Park. Students with children will appreciate the popular Unity Point School District and family programs. (Eligibility: married students,

domestic partners, students with children, single graduate students and single undergraduate students age 21 and older.)

Applications 1. Meet eligibility requirements. More information is available online. 2. Apply online early. Contracts are offered based on application date and space availability. 3. If offered a contract, sign and return the contract with prepayment. Remember that you’ll want to contract for housing online as soon as possible. For fall 2019, the process begins Dec. 1, 2018. Evergreen Terrace Apartments


PAVING THE WAY Financial aid made easy.

(U.S. Citizens only) Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.ed.gov. It’s the first step in exploring your college financing options. Note that online filing begins in October. You’ll need to include SIU’s federal school code, which is 001758. Complete the FAFSA by Dec. 1 to receive priority consideration. Starting in January, the Financial Aid Office will notify students, detailing each student’s package of awards – a combination of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs. Installment payment plan.

SIU offers an interest-free monthly payment plan with flexible payment options. You’ll be charged a $30 nonrefundable enrollment fee per semester. To enroll, go to salukinet.siu.edu and click on the “My Finances” tab. (Remember, you must re-enroll each semester.) For more details, including sign-up deadlines, call 618-453-2221 or visit bursar.siu.edu.

Fellowships/Scholarships.

Fellowships and scholarships are granted to students who meet certain criteria. In most cases, students must be nominated by their academic department. Interested students should contact their departments for information on how to be nominated and to inquire about internal department deadlines. Additional information for fellowships is available atgradschool.siu. edu/cost-aid/fellowships. Scholarship information is available at gradschool.siu. edu/cost-aid/scholarships. Make sure you carefully read the eligibility requirements prior to applying.

Assistantships.

Graduate Assistantship (GA) positions include teaching, research and administrative positions. They are funded through departments and researchers. Some administrative positions become available through the year. Contact your academic department for teaching and research positions. Assistantship positions are available at jobs.siu.edu/view-all-jobs-ga.

Rethinking your semester of entry?

Plans change. We get that. If you prefer to switch your semester of entry to a term other than the one for which you’ve been admitted, no problem. Simply inform SIU Graduate admissions before the start of the term for which you originally were admitted. Wellness matters. Review your health insurance coverage.

Part of your semester fee includes a student insurance fee. You are eligible for a refund of this fee if you’re covered under another comparable health insurance policy. Refund applications must be submitted by the second Friday of the fall and spring semesters, and by the first Friday of the summer session. To learn more, call 618-453-3311 or visit shc.siu.edu. Submit your immunization form to the Student Health Center. The Illinois College Immunization Code requires enrolling students to provide proof of immunizations for Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Additional proof of Meningococcal conjugate is needed for students under 22 years of age. For the specific requirements, Immunization Compliance Form, and further information, visit immunizations.siu.edu You can obtain your immunization records from your physician, local health department, high school, or previous university. You may email immunizations@ siu.edu, fax 618-453-4452, or mail your documents before the start of the semester. Students not compliant by the 10th day of enrollment will be placed on a registration hold until compliant.
