ENSURING FUTURE SUCCESS

INSPIRED BY STUDENTS

THE NEED

The $5.7 million Student Design Center will add secure, supervised, dedicated space for senior design projects, where students integrate project-based learning into the curriculum, and for collegiate competition teams that challenge students to apply what they are learning in the classroom in a competitive environment.

A student team designs a system to improve the safety of drone package delivery systems. Another student group travels to Guatemala to help a village access clean water year-round. In Austin, Texas, the solar car team achieves a new team best at the Formula Sun Grand Prix. Closer to home, a student group upgrades the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning at an assisted living facility.

The School has secured enough of the $5.7 million needed for this project to begin construction in fall 2016. The School now needs to raise the remaining $1.3 million by spring 2018 to complete construction. Every bit of help puts the School that much closer to the goal.

Over 25 engineering student organizations and teams preparing for competitions, such as concrete canoe, steel bridge and solar car, are often vying for the same lab space as students engaged in classwork. The lack of space causes students to work elsewhere—both on and off campus. The new Student Design Center will better enable students to work together to bring innovative, groundbreaking ideas to life.

ABOUT THE BUILDING

Increased opportunities for experiential learning allow students to apply principles, concepts and theories from the classroom. They enhance creativity, advance problemsolving and decision-making abilities, and develop leadership skills. Additionally, students learn from one another as they improve their abilities to communicate and cooperate in a team.

These SIUE School of Engineering students are the inspiration for the new Student Design Center.

“When I picture the new design center, I see a place where students are creating. I see a place filled with positive energy and a love of learning. I see passionate problem solving. That kind of environment will greatly improve the quality of projects that come out of SIUE.” Amanda Fisher, Junior, Civil Engineering, Springfield, Ill. Geotechnical/GeoWall Team, Competition Chair

“We need a group effort to make this happen. We need local businesses, alumni and community members. Everyone has a chance to contribute and make a difference.” Jonathan Fowler, BS Electrical Engineering ’10 Chief Operating Officer, Fowler Management Services Inc.

BENEFITING THE REGION An investment in the students of the School by supporting the Student Design Center is also an investment in the local economy, and local and regional industry. By hiring highly sought School of Engineering students, corporations and businesses in the area benefit from the excellent education provided to our students. The enhanced facilities will ensure graduates are even better prepared through increased hands-on experiences.

HELP SHAPE TOMORROW TODAY Gifts to help “Shape Tomorrow Today” ensure that the School of Engineering continues to be one of the finest, most comprehensive engineering schools in the region. More importantly, they provide excellent educational opportunities for our students. “I have seen the School of Engineering grow continuously since I graduated, both in the number of students and programs offered. The Student Design Center will be a major part of this growth.” Aaron Detmer, BS Mechanical Engineering ’03 Project Engineer, G&W Engineering
