A Message from the Director Greetings! Welcome to a brand-new decade! Opportunities to scratch over the year when writing the date, forget you even made those New Year’s resolutions, or to feel that decade older abound. boring-looking 12-point, Times New Roman font, a very simple, one-line verse credited to Henry David Thoreau: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” And this phrase, written on a smudged, dog eared half-sheet, made me think about the nuanced difference between the words “look” and “see” in the quote. I have not yet figured out the answers, and the promise of the new year does not make me think I will be solving this mystery of the universe.
So, while you may struggle with me to pen the date correctly, I hope you feel the promise and expectancy of the new year and I wish you the ability to not only look, but to see, perhaps in a way you’ve never seen before. Each day, each year, brings promise and the opportunity to look again. Enjoy the journey into the new year and beyond and celebrate all which allows each of us to see things anew.
As I was gazing at some beautiful blown glass at a vendor display, I noticed, quite innocuously, posted between two gorgeous vases a plain half sheet of paper upon which was printed in the most
