A Message from the Director Greetings! Welcome to summer 2020 and SIUE’s community and professional development catalog offered by the Office of Educational Outreach! Make this a summer worthy of those getstuck-in-your-head summer songs that make us all long for warm, sunny days by taking a trip or participating in one of our offerings. We are excited to announce our latest courses, partnerships, camps, trips as well as our new SIUE Online Degree Completion program. One of the best things about summer is seeing all of the youth participating in our various summer camps! As children, tweens and teens travel around campus in their matching t-shirts, they bring their youthful exuberance and their contagious sense of curiosity to our campus community. If you have never considered SIUE summer camps for your children, please note our featured camps on page 2, as well as the opportunity to utilize an early drop-off and late pickup feature in partnership with the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. See siue.edu/summer for all of the details and registration links. Want to see something new? We are offering new trips (page 3), including a Busch Stadium behindthe-scenes tour and a guided Hill tour of one of St. Louis’ favorite Italian neighborhoods. Back by popular demand, we are offering a Southern Illinois breweries, wineries and distilleries guided tour.
New classes will include additional and diverse yoga courses, in partnership with Studio Gaia, and an introduction to Quickbooks course with an option to earn a digital badge. New and returning classes are offered in collaboration with the Macoupin Art Collective as well as in partnership with Sunset Hills Country Club. We will also continue offering the award-winning breadmaking courses in collaboration with Artisan 222 Bakery. Congratulations to Leslie Brock, assistant director for non-credit programs for her award winning submission and accomplishment of capturing the Learning Resources Network (LERN) International Award for Course of the Year for 2019. Finally, I am very excited to announce the opportunity for community members to become SIUE students as part of our new online degree completion options beginning fall 2020. If SIUE is to achieve its mission to shape a changing world, it’s important to serve students who are not able to come to campus to participate in our campus degree programs. While these programs are designed for those who have the equivalent of an associate degree, we can also serve students who have some college, but no degree. If this is the time for you, please reach out and give us the opportunity to talk with you about the possibilities! Best wishes for the productive, enjoyable summer where you can stretch right up and touch the sky! Mary Ettling Interim Director

The Conversation: A Revolutionary Approach to End-of-Life Care: We know we are mortal, but most of us only consider our mortality in theory. Few make plans beyond a will. In our death-avoidant American culture, we rarely consider the value of discussing and documenting our wishes if crisis has robbed us or a family member of communication. An advanced directive written before a crisis removes the question. Taught by an end-of-life doula, we will spend our time together discussing the who, what, where, when and why of this sensitive and highly personal document. Emotions run high when death is near. Having a carefully considered plan that has been shared openly with the appropriate people long before the crisis prevents agonizing over the gut-wrenching question: What would I/he/she want done?

Social Work Conference: Acknowledging and Addressing Cultural Trauma and Ethical Practice in the Digital Age: Based on a humanistic framework, cultural trauma, empirically proposed by Jeffrey Alexander and colleagues in 2004, considers the disruptions that occur at the individual and group level when an ‘original’ culture is exposed to, encroached upon, disembodied, and threatened by a dominant or arriving culture. This training will help participants further understand the concept and consider its impact in social work practice. This training is aligned with NASW code of ethical values of social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, and competencies. Ethics will focus on the use of technology in social service practice and client engagement. As the digital age of technology is constantly changing and advancing, it is crucial for those in helping professions to remain current on ethical practices that involve the World Wide Web. Participation in this presentation will enhance understanding of the ethical use and impact of digital and internet-based services. Six CEU’s will be awarded. Conference Fee: $85; $20 (Student Fee) Friday, July 31, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. N.O. Nelson, LeClaire Room
