Experience on-campus living Students who live on-campus at SIUE will experience life and community outside the classroom. Housing residents foster friendships within their communities, connect with faculty and staff, and take advantage of numerous opportunities for personal and academic growth. Living on-campus is unique. You will meet people from all across the United States and the world. Potential study partners, dinner companions and
intramural sports teammates are right down the hall or next door. Late night discussions can range from the global economy, politics and race relations, to the latest new movie release, favorite books, magazines, artists and sports. Late night pickup basketball games under the lights or jam sessions in a social lounge are common. We are proud to provide an environment that facilitates personal growth, friendships and community.

Residents can join their Area Council and the RHA or be nominated to join National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). NRHH is an invitation-only student organization that recognizes the top one percent of students in Housing. Plus, residents can apply to become a resident assistant or desk manager – positions that provide extensive training, opportunities for planning and leadership experience, and much more!
University Housing has numerous leadership opportunities. From Area Council to Residence Housing Association (RHA), our staff takes the opportunity to get to know and understand the strengths of each resident. Getting involved can be intimidating, but the rewards are invaluable. Students involved in leadership are provided experiences and opportunities that translate to real-world work experience, providing a chance for programming, budgeting and leadership experience as an undergraduate student.

First-Year Living Options First-year students live in Bluff Hall, Prairie Hall and Woodland Hall. All buildings are smoke-free and feature suite-style facilities – two people share each room and four people share a bathroom. Each wing has an academic lounge for quiet study along with a social lounge containing a kitchenette, microwave and cable television.
All units are air-conditioned and include connection to the SIUE wireless network, expanded basic cable and telephone hook-up. Residents have access to a 24-hour computer lab and laundry room facilities. Each hall boasts an activity wing with rooms for academic and social programs.

Focused Interest Communities Living in a Focused Interest Community (FIC) is an easy way to receive academic support, meet other students with similar interests, explore a specific concentration or career, and connect with faculty outside the classroom. Several FICs are also connected to linked classes. Linked classes are designed to meet degree course requirements and are a unique opportunity to enrich your FIC

Upperclass Living Options

Upperclass residents have two living options: Evergreen Hall and Cougar Village Apartments. Evergreen Hall (Freshmen cannot reside in Evergreen Hall) is a unique environment that combines the independence of apartmentstyle living with the amenities of a residence hall. Four types of spaces are available: studio apartment (one person, private with full kitchen), private suite (private bedroom in a suite, living room and bathroom), private apartment (private bedroom in an apartment, living room, bathroom and full kitchen), and a shared apartment (shared bedroom in an apartment, living room, bathroom and full kitchen).
Evergreen Hall highlights
Each wing houses a full kitchen, available to all Evergreen residents. Evergreen Hall features an activity wing with rooms for social and academic programs. The activity wing also boasts a fitness center, only accessible to Evergreen residents.

Each spring, Evergreen Hall co-hosts Rock the Dock, an annual concert event. Rock the Dock takes place in the Evergreen “backyard”… on the dock!

Cougar Village residents enjoy the same amenities as residence hall residents. Three to four students share two– and three–bedroom apartments in buildings containing eight units each. It is easy to get know your neighbors and build community with the number of activities offered to support upperclass residents – both academically and socially. The Cougar Village Commons offers laundry and mail facilities, meeting rooms, study and social lounges, and a computer lab. The Cougar Village Dugout and Convenience Store, a dining facility that accepts campus meal plans, is also conveniently located in the Commons.

1. Sustainability Evergreen Hall features high-efficiency lighting, toilets and showers, extensive use of glass to provide daylight and cabinets made from recycled materials. It is strategically located on a bike trail and public transportation route. 2. Shuttle Service Frequently used by Cougar Village residents, Madison Country Transit (MCT) is the free shuffle service offered to transport Cougar Village residents back and forth to the campus core.

3. Cougar Village Commons The Cougar Village Commons offers laundry and mail facilities, meeting rooms, study and social lounges, and a computer lab. The Cougar Village Dugout and Convenience Store, a dining facility that accepts campus meal plans, is also conveniently located in the Commons. 4. Amenities Evergreen Hall features 73 percent private bedrooms and accessibility to a full kitchen for all residents. Evergreen Hall residents are not required to purchase a meal plan, but it is available.

Family Housing

Students with families can also make their home in Cougar Village. Family residents may choose between two-and-three bedroom furnished or unfurnished apartments. Family residents have the benefits of installment payments that include
all utilities – gas, electricity, water, trash, expanded basic cable television and Internet. Family residents can also take advantage of the Family Resource Center and community playground.
Civil Union/Domestic Partner/Transgender Housing University Housing offers housing for transgender students, domestic partnerships and civil unions. Safety and Security Safety and security are top priorities in University Housing. Blue emergency lights are located throughout campus near walkways and parking areas. SIUE police patrol the campus, offer safety escorts at night and maintain a visible presence in our communities. A University Housing staff member is on-call 24-hours-a-day. All staff members are fully trained to answer your questions, as well as identify, report and respond to any concerns you may have.
Gender Neutral Housing Gender neutral housing is housing where members of the opposite gender live together in a living unit/apartment. This option is only offered to upperclass students. If you are interested in gender neutral housing, please contact the Central Housing Office via e-mail, housing@siue.edu for more information.

Eating on Campus

Residents in Bluff, Prairie or Woodland Halls must purchase one of two mandatory meal plans, Plan A or Plan B. Cougar Village and Evergreen Hall residents may opt to participate in any of the five meal plans: Plan A, Plan B, Plan D, Plan E, Plan F. You can add money to your plan at any time. You also have the first two weeks of each semester to make a change to Plans A and B. Optional plans can be changed at any time.
Morris University Center is home to Center Court which features Kyna’s Grill, Picc-a-deli, a classic entrée area, the Garden Patch, The Wok, and Sweet Surprises and Baker’s Nook. In addition, students may dine at Chick-fil-A Express®, Pizza Hut Express®, Sweete’s, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels® and Starbucks®. Kaldi’s Coffee® is located in the Student Success Center. Dining Services has satellite locations in two residence halls: The Bluff Hall Café and Woodland Hall Cart. The Energy Zone is located in the Student Fitness Center. Cougar Village residents and their guests can visit the Cougar Village Dugout and Convenience Store. And, to grab a quick bite to eat between classes, students often retreat to the Skywalk Café which is conveniently located between two main academic buildings – Founders and Alumni Halls.
Monies left on Plans A and B will roll over from the fall semester to the spring semester. At the end of the spring semester, a refund of the “Dining Dollars” balance will be issued if there is no outstanding balance on the student’s account. Monies left on Plans D, E and F will roll from semester to semester until a written request is submitted to the Central Housing Office.
Meal plans are required in Bluff, Prairie and Woodland Halls. Residents in Evergreen Hall and Cougar Village are welcome to select an optional meal plan…which is an easy way to utilize dining venues on campus for lunch, coffee or a quick snack between classes. And the best part – no dishes!

Important Notes to Remember Apply Early! Apply Online! Space in University Housing tends to fill quickly and prior to the application deadline. We encourage you to apply for housing as soon as you can. You do have to be admitted to the University to apply for housing. Application/contract will not be accepted without the required $300 advance payment. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with the preference date being the date both the application and payment are received. Roommate preferences must be mutually requested by the application deadline. This means each student must have the preferred roommate’s name and University ID number listed on his/her application. New applicants may have an opportunity to participate in online roommate selection. After applying for University Housing, new applicants may receive additional information on how to take advantage of this opportunity. Freshmen (18-20 years) may not live in Cougar Village Apartments or Evergreen Hall. It is important for the student, not family members, to fill out the application/contract and “Personal Data Summary” completely and accurately. This helps us determine your best possible roommate match. Signing the application/contract affirms that the Terms and Conditions have been read and understood. Residents are responsible for complying with the Terms and Conditions of the contract. Please remember that this is a legal contract for the entire academic year. It cannot be cancelled unless one of the criteria in Section IVH.H. of the Terms and Conditions is met. Beginning fall 2011, SIUE reserves the right to require all undergraduate firstyear and second-year students from outside a 60 mile radius of campus, with limited exceptions, to live in University Housing. Frequently Asked Questions What should I bring? Bring the items that make your room/ apartment feel like home. An extensive list of suggested items to bring and not to bring may be found on our website at siue.edu/housing. We encourage you to talk with your roommate(s) before arriving on campus to coordinate what you intend to bring. How are rooms/apartments assigned? Roommate and living preferences go to those who make payment before the application deadlines. Incoming residents are asked to complete the “Personal Data Summary” on the housing application, which assists us in matching roommates. Assignment letters are mailed to all residents notifying them of their roommate(s), check-in dates and room assignments. Private and deluxe private bedrooms are limited and offered on a firstcome, first-served basis and availability. May I have a pet? Sure…as long as you like fish! Where can I go if I have a concern with my room or apartment? Professional and student staff are assigned to designated living areas and will assist you when needed. Is housing available for the summer session? Summer residents will live in Cougar Village Apartments or Evergreen Hall, provided they meet enrollment requirements.
