Studying abroad will give you a competitive edge when applying for internships, jobs and graduate school. Reality: Study abroad is an investment in your future and your career. In this era of globalization, you can’t afford NOT to go! SIUE offers more than 150 study abroad programs that range in cost. Some programs are more expensive than others; some are very comparable to the cost of studying at SIUE. Financial aid doesn’t transfer to study abroad. Reality: Most financial aid applies to SIUE’s study abroad programs. There are also a number of scholarships set up specifically for studying abroad.

It is necessary to speak a foreign language to study abroad. Reality: While some programs do have a foreign language requirement, many programs are taught exclusively in English or offer select courses taught in English. Studying abroad will delay graduation. SUSTaInaBIlITY Sustainability and living green are important at SIUE. The University is continually looking for ways to ensure a healthy and sustainable campus life. You can choose from more than 40 courses with a sustainability focus in fields as diverse as biology, engineering, business, anthropology and philosophy. You can minor in environmental science or pursue an undergraduate specialization in ecology, evolution and environment. The Student Organization for Sustainability (SOS) gives students the opportunity to promote sustainability awareness on campus and in the community. SOS hosts an educational radio show and coordinates activities such as campus clean-up days and an annual Earth Day celebration. The Gardens at SIUE is a 35-acre public garden and living laboratory dedicated to supporting education and research. Environmental sustainability and stewardship are cornerstones of The Gardens’ vision, providing a unique opportunity to research and implement innovative green technologies. First-year students can choose to live on campus in a focused interest community among other students who want to explore living sustainably. Upper-class students can live in the Eco-House, a stand-alone house conveniently located next to The Gardens at SIUE. This living community supports sustainable living, conservation and community service. The 380-acre SIUE Nature Preserve features a dedicated location for student and faculty research, lab projects and class assignments. The area—protected from construction— contributes to the University’s sustainability and energy plans. All new campus construction is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certifiable. The Student Success Center, for example, includes various green features, such as translucent walls made from recycled milk jugs and polished concrete flooring.

You will be given the opportunity to work closely with faculty on groundbreaking research such as synthesizing drugs to improve their effectiveness in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and developing drugs to relieve chronic pain. The School of Pharmacy offers a 2+4 program, which means you must first complete two years of pre-pharmacy classes and then, if admitted, you will enter the four-year doctor of pharmacy program. You may also apply to pharmacy school after earning a four-year undergraduate degree.

Transfer admission requirements Students who transfer with 30 semester hours or more from an accredited institution will be admitted to SIUE with a minimum cumulative 2.0/4.0 (C) grade point average. Students who transfer with fewer than 30 semester hours must also submit a high school transcript and ACT/ SAT test scores. These students must meet freshman admission requirements. Transfer Credit SIUE general education requirements are considered met if n Students have received an A.A., A.S. or A.S.A. degree from an accredited two-year institution that conforms to the Illinois Community College Board n Students have satisfied the IAI General Education Core Curriculum: itransfer.org
