THE IMPACT OF EXCELLENCE

2015 ECONOMIC IMPACT

Since 1957, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has served as an anchor to the economic health and stability of the region. As state funding has diminished over time, the University has continued to serve as a responsible steward, implementing academic programs and responding to societal needs in a changing economic landscape. SIUE’s impact on the local region is profound, whether the focus is on educational opportunities, housing, local business and entertainment, or the quality and preparedness of our graduates. This economic impact study is the third in a succession of five-year snapshots. Each study has yielded valuable information regarding the extent of SIUE’s reach and influence within southwestern Illinois. For fiscal year

$514,000,000 SIUE’s Economic Impact

2015, SIUE reports a total economic impact of $514 million, generating approximately $8.60 for every dollar invested in the University. This is an increase of nearly $1.80 over the previous study in 2010, and provides proof that SIUE remains a vital economic engine for the region. Significant progress continues in the areas of job growth (SIUE is the second largest regional employer), grants and contracts funding, and University-related expenditures in the region. The force of SIUE’s momentum can be traced to the strategic planning that occurs at all levels and that is based on the University’s five core values: Citizenship, Excellence, Inclusion, Integrity and Wisdom. SIUE has identified a number of long- and short-term goals in support of its values, all of which are dedicated to the enrichment of the southwestern Illinois region and the well-being of its citizens. In achieving these goals, the University continues to develop and provide quality educational opportunities, jobs, economic health and hope in challenging times.
