OUR MISSION The mission of the SIUE East St. Louis Center is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in Greater East St. Louis in the areas of education, health, social services and the arts. The Center identifies urban community needs and opportunities through research, and leverages resources to support students on campus and in the community.
OUR VISION The vision of the SIUE East St. Louis Center is to become a nationally recognized urban higher education campus that delivers innovative programs and excellent opportunities for post-secondary education. The Center shall prepare the Greater East St. Louis community for success in school, life and careers in a global and technologically advanced society.

SIUE EAST ST. LOUIS CENTER The SIUE East St. Louis Center (ESLC) has supported youth, adults and families in the Greater East St. Louis community for more than 50 years. As a proud contributor to the area’s historic and resilient communities, the ESLC provides dynamic programming for all ages that fosters personal development, increases access to educational opportunities and makes social mobility possible for entire families. Every great community has a great university, as education has the power to transform lives. The SIUE ESLC is one of the few places in the nation where students can rise from preschool to PhD, featuring programs that serve individuals at multiple points along the educational continuum. The Center also offers a variety of services that contribute to the health and vitality of the community through healthcare clinics, workforce development programming and more. SIUE realizes human potential, amplifies access for all individuals with a critical focus on equity, and makes outsized contributions to not only the region, but also the state and nation. The ESLC is a critical contributor to that promise and purpose. Future leaders and difference makers are built here.

LEADERSHIP
SUPPORTING SUCCESS SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start The SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start program serves more than 860 families and children within St. Clair County. The program provides comprehensive services in seven directly managed early childhood centers, home-based partners and two early childcare partners. SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start helps pregnant moms and families of children ages six weeks to five years old and puts them on a pathway to success. SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start is a nationally recognized, quality early childhood education program that promotes school readiness for children. Contact us: 618-482-6955
SERVING SCHOOL-AGE YOUTH Project Success An after-school, tutorial enrichment childcare program, Project Success serves 102 children, 5-14 years of age, who are in protective custody and are referred by the Department of Children and Family Services. The program provides after-school tutoring, summer camp, enrichment activities, nutrition, field trips, athletics, music and dance to participating youth. Contact us: 618-482-8334
OUR PROGRAMS With a focus on safe and supportive programming, the SIUE East St. Louis Center (ESLC) inspires individuals to seek something greater. With an enthusiastic and dedicated staff, ESLC programming helps both youth and adults achieve their full potential, developing individuals into future community leaders, business owners, pioneering scientists, creative innovators and industry influencers.
Building Futures The Building Futures program positively impacts youth who need additional support and encouragement to pursue their career paths. Through the help of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and foster care managers, the benefits of this program serve as an additional resource to increase the likelihood of the young person having a positive transition out of the foster care system. The program works with youth ages 15-20 after they transition from foster care. TRIO Upward Bound The SIUE East St. Louis Center manages three TRIO Upward Bound program grants that serve high school students from East St. Louis, Cahokia, SIUE East St. Louis Charter, Brooklyn, Madison and Collinsville. Targeting low-income, and/or potential first-generation college graduates, the programs offer after-school, Saturday and summer programming that includes tutoring, enrichment, college prep counseling, college visits and ACT preparation. Each year, 95-100% of Upward Bound participants graduate from high school and are accepted into two- or four-year colleges, including SIUE, University of Missouri and Howard University. We provide supportive services to military Veterans and members of the National Guard and Reserve to enable them to enter or re-enter a vocational/technical school or a two- or four-year college. The program is seeking veterans who want to further their education but need help navigating the enrollment process and finding financial assistance. Contact us: 618-874-6296 Center for the Performing Arts The SIUE East St. Louis Center for the Performing Arts has a long, rich history. The legendary dancer, anthropologist and social activist Katherine Dunham founded the Center for the Performing Arts at the SIUE East St. Louis Center in1967. The Center for the Performing Arts operates an after-school program and a full day, six- to eight-week summer enrichment program for 80-125 youth, ages 6-17. Students study the Katherine Dunham technique along with other dance movements, as well as voice, musical instruments and African drumming. Contact us: 618-482-6904

ADDRESSING EARLY CHILDHOOD NEEDS
PROVIDING SERVICES AND SUPPORT SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School – Preparing students to be career- and college-ready upon graduation, the SIUE East St. Louis Charter High School is a school of choice for families in the East St. Louis School District. Learning Resource Center (LRC) – The LRC is a full-service public library focusing on youth and adult community outreach. The library contributes to the success of higher education opportunities and career development for the community. SIUE WE CARE Clinic – The nurse-managed primary clinic sponsored by the SIUE School of Nursing provides care to diverse clients in the Greater East St. Louis region. SIU Dental Clinic – Residents of Madison and St. Clair Counties – including children – can receive quality, affordable dental care provided by the SIU School of Dental Medicine. UMSL Optometry Clinic – Optometrists from the University of Missouri-St. Louis provide comprehensive eye exams, disease diagnosing, and glasses/contacts lens selection and fitting to Madison and St. Clair County residents. SIUE Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP) – Implemented by the SIUE School of Nursing, SNAP enhances educational opportunities and graduation success rates of disadvantaged students. Early intervention strategies and support systems help students complete the nursing program and work as professional registered nurses. SIUE Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – The SBDC provides training services and confidential counseling at little or no cost. Services include, but are not limited to, providing financial, marketing, production and business plan assistance. SIUE Office of Online Services and Educational Outreach (OSEO) – OSEO offers a variety of personal and professional development opportunities. It works across credit, certificate and non-credit programs to provide a wide array of opportunities to engage in continuing education for career enhancement or simply for enjoyment. SIUE Successful Communities Collaborative (SSCC) – The SSCC is a cross-disciplinary program that supports one-year partnerships between the University and communities in Illinois to advance local resilience and sustainability based on community-identified environmental, social and economic issues and needs. Its mission is to connect Illinois communities with the students and faculty of the University.
OUTREACH INITIATIVES The SIUE East St. Louis Center (ESLC) is a strong community partner, offering resources that are essential to the development of youth, families and neighborhoods. ESLC outreach efforts create social and economic mobility for individuals, while also powering the workforce of the future through lifelong learning opportunities and healthcare services, as well as business and community development support. All programs are conveniently located on the Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus.
