GRADUATE STUDIES at SIUE Committed to graduate education and scholarship, the SIUE Graduate School provides high-quality programs, fosters intellectual development, and facilitates excellence in scholarly and creative activities. At SIUE, graduate students can pursue a master’s or doctoral degree or work to obtain a graduate certificate. Graduate classes may be taken on a full- or part-time basis. Graduate School offerings include arts, sciences, business, education, health, human behavior, engineering, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences and interdisciplinary opportunities. First-professional doctoral degrees are available in pharmacy (PharmD) and dental medicine (DMD). Doctoral degrees are available in nursing practice and educational leadership. Cooperative PhD programs in history, engineering science and computer science are offered with SIU Carbondale. Graduate programs emphasize real-world experience through original scholarly activity opportunities, student-faculty scholarly collaborations, and partnerships with communities, governments, industries and other universities.

More than a BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS We’re known for our beautiful campus. Our scenic and modern campus sits on 2,660 acres of forested woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River bottom land. We take our reputation seriously and are committed to continually enhancing the learning environment for students. Since 2006, the University has completed more than $300 million in construction and infrastructure improvements, adding new state-of-the-art buildings, and enhancing existing structures. Sustainability and green living are important at SIUE. All new campus construction is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEEDŽ) certifiable by the U.S. Green Building Council. The new Art and Design Building has achieved a LEED Gold rating and the Science Building and Lucas Annex have achieved a LEED Silver rating. SIUE is second in the region for the number of LEED buildings on university campuses, placing only behind Washington University in St. Louis. SIUE has achieved a Silver rating based on the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System for campus-wide sustainable practices from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. 6
The addition to the Art and Design Building features a spacious art gallery that is visible from the walkway outside, painting and drawing studios oriented to bring in northern light, and expanded studios and critique spaces.
The new Science Building Complex is equipped with the same state-of-the-art equipment that is typically found in the research labs of future employers.
The recent addition to and renovation of the Engineering Building offers students additional laboratory and work space that replicates industry standards and provides opportunities to collaborate and assist on innovative research projects.

Most floor plans include private bedrooms, and the facility houses a multifunction room, meeting rooms, a conference room and a fitness center. Affording GRADUATE EDUCATION SIUE values graduate education as a significant investment in your future. There are several ways to finance a graduate education, most common of which are fellowships and grants, assistantships, and student loans. The SIUE Office of Financial Aid is ready to help you find options to finance your graduate education. We will work with you to manage college costs, regardless of your financial circumstances.

Graduate Scholar Awards
SIUE offers assistantships at the master’s, specialist and doctoral levels in a number of academic, service and research units. All assistantships are designed to be of direct benefit to the graduate student. Graduate assistants receive a monthly stipend and waiver of tuition.
Graduate Scholar Awards provide financial support in the form of tuition waivers to new academically qualified individuals from groups underrepresented in graduate programs. There are up to 15 awards available each year given to first-time graduate students.
Research and Travel Grants
Employer Reimbursement and CorporateSponsored Assistantships
SIUE supports graduate student scholarship by offering Research Grants for Graduate Students (RGGS), Research Grants for Research Doctoral Students (RGRDS) and travel grants. RGGSs and RGRDSs are small grants awarded on a competitive basis to support scholarly activities initiated and conducted by classified graduate students to help enhance their academic progress. Faculty advisors oversee the scholarly activity, particularly as it relates to the thesis, dissertation or final project. Travel grants help make travel for major paper presentations and eligible exhibits and performances possible.
Competitive Graduate Award Competitive Graduate Awards (CGA) are available to support highly qualified new graduate students, including students from underrepresented groups, who are accepted into advanced degree programs at SIUE. Up to 19 CGAs are awarded annually for the nine-month academic year. CGA recipients receive a monthly stipend and waiver of tuition. Recipients will work with faculty to get an early experience in their area of scholarship. 10

Federal Financial Aid To be eligible for federal financial aid, the first step is to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov. Loan options for graduate students include Perkins loans, Stafford loans and Graduate PLUS loans (domestic students only).
