The International Students Summer Institute (ISSI) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is an academically focused one-month program designed for intellectually motivated international high school students. This program provides an educational environment that allows international students to enhance their English communication skills and experience the academic and social atmosphere of a nationally recognized American university while earning transferable college credit.

Completed online application n One letter of recommendation n 1,000 word essay n A copy of biographical page of passport n Official scores for English Proficiency Requirement Applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 79.

Students will:

All students in this program must enter the United States on a F-1 student visa and enroll as fulltime summer institute students (6 credit hours). Upon acceptance to the program, you will receive information on how to apply for your visa.

Become more familiar with American university teaching styles English language speaking and writing skills n Enhance public speaking skills n Participate in team-building activities and group discussions n Meet with academic advisers, faculty, and deans n Experience on-campus residence hall living n Experience an American social atmosphere through weekend excursions to Illinois’ state capitol, President Abraham Lincoln’s home, St. Louis Zoo and Art Museum, and more n Improve

TUITION AND FEES $9,000 USD includes tuition and university fees as well as fees for all meals, accommodations, activities and local transportation.

ACADEMIC CURRICULUM

Not included: fees for international transportation, international insurance or visa application.

ISSI is specifically tailored to international high school students. Students will take two courses and earn six (6) college credit hours after successful completion of both courses.

Introduction to English Literature: Representative works in world drama, fiction, and poetry. Development of appreciation of literature by understanding themes, purposes, techniques and history. Interpersonal Communication Skills: Principles and practices of oral communication emphasizing message formation and delivery, listening, perception, awareness of verbal and nonverbal codes, relationships and managing conflict.
